Rebel’s Call – Space Troopers #1 - This is a wonderfully crafted story that follows twins Peyton and Jai Foster, separated at birth and sent to two, very different lives in a world that is not so far removed from the one that we live in today.
Although their world is set in the future, it is run entirely by economics, Corporations run basically everything, and everybody works for a Corporation, via a set contract, that if its voided, either you have to get your family to pay for you to get home, you might be lucky enough to get some menial labour wherever you are, or more than likely, you will just end up dead. If you are not sponsored by one of the Corporations, then you have nothing, they pay for your food, housing, even clothing – so you lose your contract, you lose your life.
For a lot of people, they desperately try to get to training places that are like military training academies, and colleges/universities, all rolled into one. They take on a large number of recruits each year, but generally those that are sponsored. However, because there are so many people in the position like the Twins, they select the best of those that live in the orphanages, but it is generally only a couple from hundreds of applicants.
This story is quite multifaceted, in that it not only has two segments, the beginning segment in which we see the twins going through the academy, but also multifaceted in that we get to see the story from the points of view of multiple different characters.
This isn’t just the standard ‘Military’ grunt recruit opening sequence, it is a lot more complex, as we get to learn the very intricate and detailed world that has been created for the characters to live in.
The world building is just exceptional, the quality and depth of every aspect of the story is breathtaking, leaving you immersed in this very complex commercial world in which the Corporations run and rule everything, every aspect of your life. You don’t eat, blink, or go to the loo, without a Corporation knowing about it, and getting some sort of dollar value out it, either directly from you, or via your contract. It is a terrifying look at a future reality, but one that has been so beautifully, and cleverly well-crafted so that you really believe you are there.
The Character work is just astonishing, Peyton and Jai are so totally different characters, opposite ends of the spectrum, and so expertly written. You really believe these people, understand them, and as the book progresses, you not only know them, but really like them. I have to say though, one of my favourite characters in the book is Zean Foster, I’ll let you read and find out why.
As the story progresses, it becomes more and more compelling, and you get to delve further into this captivating world, full of intrigue and mystery, and soon, both Peyton and Jai, even though they don’t know the other exists, and have nothing to do with each other (They are in separate parts of the Space Academy, and Peyton is all Soldier, whilst Jai is more of a Tech Head, and is with their Tech Troops), the two of them have both worked out that things are not right.
Aided by their friends, and both of them with their unique set of skills, they begin to follow the various trails that they find, and it leads to things that neither of them thought was possible.
When cadets from their own Academy start to turn up dead in mysterious circumstances, things go from bad to worse.
It’s from here, that the pair begin to discover that the Corporations are not what they seem, and Contracts are a lot worse than they appear.
This is not your usual Mil Sci-Fi Super Trooper Romp – it is an intelligent, well crafted story that is full of political intrigue, with a complex, well thought out story, following multiple different characters so that you get to see the story for multiple perspectives. It makes the story a lot more interesting, and really adds to the mystery, making it such a fantastic read.
Rebel’s Call is not all mystery and intrigue though, it does have some epic combat scenes that you expect from this type of book, and these have been portrayed with the extraordinary skill that I have come to expect from Aukes and McFarlane, both who are just outstanding Authors. The combat is portrayed in a way that it is quite brutal, but it is not glorified, quite the opposite, questioning why they are doing this to each other so that Corporations can get richer on their (the soldiers) blood. It is a book that really makes you think, but is also just a fantastic Mil Sci-Fi read.
This is one that you are not going to want to miss, as this is just the start to what is going to be an exceptional series.
I have already pre-ordered book #2 ‘Rebel’s Run’, as this was just so good!!
Rebel’s Run – Space Troopers #2 - Rebel’s Run picks up from Rebel’s Call, and the incredible pace of the first book only increases in this book. At the end of the first book, twin’s Peyton and Jai had been reunited after being separated at birth, through a mutual friend Torsha, who is killed in book #1. At the start of this book, the two of them, along with Jai’s best friend Zean, who also has just graduated the academy with Jai and Peyton, are on the run from Zona after having releasing information that implicates Zona in a conspiracy that has plunged the galaxy into a major corporate war between Zona and Setteri as well as some of the other Corporations.
This universe has developed into one in which everyone works for a Corporation under a contract, and the Corporations in turn, pay for your food, housing, living. There is no real material wealth among the masses anymore, as they barely have the money (or the energy or time for anything so frivolous).
Having burnt their connection to Zona, Jai, Peyton and Zean are on the run, hunted by Zona troops everywhere, and trying to find a mysterious organisation known only as ‘Caliber’.
This book starts so fast, you barely have the chance to start it and get into the opening chapters before there are major impacts on main characters. The opening sequences of this book are fast, with some brutal fighting, that is desperate, and makes for compelling reading.
No sooner are the twins back together, than they are separated again, and onto two different story paths, and when you think the story couldn’t go any more enthralling, the Authors step it up a notch.
Jai finds himself onboard a ship known as the ‘Dirty Diablo’, trying to follow up on his lead to Caliber. He quickly falls in with a mercenary group as he looks for Caliber, and finds himself a part of this small crew.
Peyton meanwhile is sold as a slave, and is to be dropped onto a landing platform that is currently in a war of attrition, each side throwing whatever newbies they can find into the battle with no training, and no weapons (why waste the weapons or the time on people who are just going to get killed), in the vague hope that they might kill one or two of the other side before they are cut down.
However, things change when Peyton, desperate to not only save herself, but also looking to protect a young girl caught up in the mix, suddenly takes it on herself to change how things are done.
This book actually has two stories in it, with Jai and Peyton’s streams running parallel through the book, and being interweaved so that the timelines of both stories run concurrently. It makes for an exceptional read, one that you just can’t put down, as the speed of this book increases at a breathtaking rate.
As with the first book, the characters are just exceptional, Peyton’s character is stunning, as this young woman, who has become this brilliant officer with extraordinary capabilities. Now, having been augmented, she is even more powerful.
Peyton’s character is fascinating in that she is so righteous, almost to a fault, believing that everyone else should be the same. She always fights for the underdog, regardless of the odds, and has a true gift for strategy and tactics the allows her to outsmart just about any opponent. It is great to see such a powerful female warrior, but one also with the intellectual skills to match. However, this book has also looked at how women are still objectified and abused, however, not overdone it. It has been very cleverly written.
On the other side, we have Jai, who is exceptionally intelligent, and utterly brilliant with regards to the computer side of just about everything. Known as a ‘net-jack’, Jai is capable of hacking into things, stealing data, doing just about anything you want with a computer and a network connection. His part of the story is equally fascinating, as we get to see the covert ops side of things from his perspective, as he, and the new group he is with, are involved in several missions (don’t want to give too much away). But it makes for compelling reading, again, you just can’t put it down.
These two are opposite sides of the coin really, with Peyton the tactical soldier, full of strategy, and leading from the front in brutal and vicious combat as she desperately tries to not only stay alive, but keep those around her alive to, all the while, trying to achieve several (non-spoiler) objectives.
On the flip-side, you have Jai, involved in covert-ops, and continuing to use his special abilities, all the while learning to be more creative in how he does things. This aspect of the story is not only creative and fascinating, but it doesn’t get too deep so as to lose you in techno-jargon.
Both of the stories are just masterful, with in-depth and intricate detail of where each of the characters are, allowing you to really immerse yourself into the story, and place yourself there, really enjoy the story from the characters point of view.
This series is one of the best Mil Sci-Fi/Combat Trooper style series I have read not just this year, but the last couple of years, with the quality of not just the writing, but the characters, and just the exceptional storytelling, and the gripping fast-paced action. If you only read a few books this year – this series has to be on your list!!!
Rebel’s Strike – Space Troopers #2 - Rebel Strike picks up from book 2, with Peyton still acting as ‘Trooper’ the Pirate captain of the Ching Shih moving through the system, leading ‘Rat Troop’ and taking out Zona shipping interests as she can working as a rebel.
The other storyline running through the book follows Jai Riggs aboard the Dirty Diablo. Jai is actually the twin sister of Peyton, but they were separated at birth, Peyton was adopted by a rich family, and wanted for nothing, as long as she performed. Jai was sent to a series of foster homes and in this universe, if you are in the foster system, your last name becomes Foster. Both end up at a prestigious military academy, Peyton through connections, Jai through his skills.
This is a very intriguing universe, one in which Corporate Greed has reached a whole new level, and corporations have taken over, they run everything, every job, your lives, you have to pay a corporation for your home, food, clothes, even the air if you are not on a planet with a breathable atmosphere. Lose your job, and you are out on the street and too bad.
Peyton and Jai learn not only that they are twins, but also that the academy is killing people, including their friends, to maintain numbers within ‘Corporate Guidelines’, and rebel, leaving the academy. Jai joins the Dirty Diablo, Peyton ends up as a pirate on the Ching Shih. Currently two of the major corporations, Setteri and Zona are at war. But Zona is huge, and will easily crush Setteri, absorbing them And when that happens, as with all monopolies, things will become horrendous for the customer or user.
However, things are far worse than this, as underlying all of this is an insidious AI that is trying to take over the galaxy, and all of humanity as well through nanite tech, allowing the AI to actually dominate and control humans as well. DIDO as the AI is known is using humans already controlled to infect others with nanites, so that slowly, they are taking over not only every computer system and ship in the galaxy, but also all of the ‘sentient’ life as well.
The only thing standing in its path are Jai and Peyton, along with a desperate selection of rebels who are fighting with everything they have to not only stand against Zona, but this diabolical AI that is intent on crushing everything in its path.
There are some wonderful characters in this book. The crew of the Dirty Diablo are just brilliant, from the ex-SCOT (a special forces solider), Bode Riggs, the Captain of the Diablo, who adopts Jai to be his ‘Son’, so that he can be not only an official part of the crew, but it also gives them all sorts of other rights to. Then there are the married couple that make up the muscle and the engineer on the ship, Theun Wolt (the muscle) and his wife Dru (the Engineer), who are not only this hilarious couple with exceptional dialogue that makes you laugh constantly, but they have such an intense love for each other that you can feel through the words. The character writing is both realistic and intense, and really brings these characters too life.
The crew of the Ching Shih, Peyton’s ship, is just as outstanding. With Alli, Peyton’s second, who has been through hell, and should be broken, but draws on Peyton’s strength and charisma so she can be strong. You can really see their relationship, feel that connection between the two of them, it is incredibly powerful at times. Alli is an amazing character. There are so many brilliant characters on the crew, Tran, T-Ball, Naki, I could list so many more. There are some I can’t list as I don’t want to give away spoilers either.
With both storylines there are some incredible characters that are extraordinary, so much detail and so in-depth, the really bring so much to the story. I just don’t want to introduce spoilers.
Added to this is the captivating world-building that is in every aspect of this story, from the characters, to the starships, to the planetary backgrounds and the weapons they use. Everything has been described in intricate deal. This is a series in which there is such a wonderful concept, with gritty realistic characters that have dialogue that is meaningful and engaging. The characters are such an exceptional part of this story, and really bring it to life.
This is a story of intrigue, betrayal, and at the same time, compassion and loyalty, friendship, as well as intense corporate greed that leads to war and the creation of an AI that is intent on the destruction of Humanity.
This is Mil Sci-Fi at its best and not to be missed!!!

Corporate domination! Who would thought it?

A small group arrive at the elevator for induction into the corporate military academy, wondering how bad can boot camp really Be? This begins a yarn of young men & women in a galaxy controlled by corporate entities, controlling all governments. When a computer geek find the evidence that Zona Corporation ( the largest of all) has launched an attack on a competitor and killed thousands. The gloves have come off! Thus starts Jai Foster, Peyton, Captain Bode's lives change!
Jamie McFarlane & Rachel Aukes have created a masterful, compelling, bingable set of exciting novels!!

I enjoyed this trilogy, which transitioned from a military academy tale, to a kick butt change the universe story. Who doesn't like to see the all powerful corporations taken down a peg or two... or the all powerful AI challenged. Lots of action sequences, interesting world building and pretty good character development of a diverse group of people, including an exceptional pair of twins who knew nothing of each other because they'd been separated at birth. I'm glad it was a trilogy because I got to read the whole series in a couple of days :)

Need a five point harness or anti-grav

Jamie and Rachel are formidable on their own. Together they are unstoppable. The twists will keep you guessing until you give up, and just strap in and enjoy the ride. The action is well done and the story plenty of space opera themes to deepen the story.

Awesome Books

I really enjoyed this set of books. I read all three back to back. I really liked Jay and Peyton along with the various crew and friends they picked up throughout their adventures. And, really hated the two main antagonists to the end. I highly recommend reading this series.

A lot of good reading

Have you ever finished reading a book and wished it would continue on as it was such a great book. Well that is exactly what this series set is like; except that it does continue. Now that is an exciting new experience.

Anarchy at its' best.

There were a few grammar mistakes. However, it does not take away from the story. Which is quite interesting and well thought out. Glad to see some writers do a bit of research. I would read more from this author. Keep up the good work.

A solid story, but it felt like something was missing. The buildup was strong, but the ending left me wanting more. The characters were likeable but didn’t really stand out. It was an enjoyable read, but not one that I would necessarily revisit. A good one-time read.

Enjoyed it thoroughly

Thought it was going to parallel Starship Troopers but it went off on other lines and well done thankfully. More space pirates than military.

The overall story is entertaining enough and kept my interest until the end, but the sheer number of typos and poorly constructed sentences is overwhelming. I would be ashamed to release work like this to the public. Sort of like a coat of paint that's full of dirt and dog hair. It needs a good sanding.
