At twenty-six years old, Abigail Willoughby is an accomplished artist, and the eldest daughter of a rich Texas cattleman. About to be married off in a business merger between her father and their closest neighbor, Abby flees the only home she’s ever known with little more than twenty dollars to her name, and her belief that the Almighty will watch over her wherever she goes.
Randall (Rand) McIver, thirty-three, is a scarred veteran of the Colorado territorial wars. All he wants is to be left alone to rebuild the ranch inherited from his late uncle, a beloved Christian minister who spent more time tending his flock than his ranch.
Abigail arrives in the small town of Cripple Creek, Colorado, with the intention of finding good, honest work to support herself. However, the only one hiring is the grumpy rancher who needs a housekeeper and cook for his rundown spread. Problem is, she’s been raised in the lap of luxury and has no idea how to do either job.
Will Abigail be able to convince Rand to give her a chance to learn, while she secretly attempts to restore the faith he knew as a child?
Nancy Fraser has been writing since she was a child, most often on walls and with crayons or (heaven forbid) permanent marker.
Since first becoming published in 1996, Nancy has received numerous five star reviews for her futuristic, time travel romance.
She’s also published in short contemporary, historical romance and is contracted for a series of ten vintage historical romances set during the Golden Decade of Rock & Roll (1955-1964).
When not writing fiction, Nancy likes to spend time with her five wonderful grandchildren.
Abigail and Rand's love story is a sweet and heartwarming tale, they find their soul mate when they least expect it, but are wise enough to grab tight and not let go. Abigail's father does cast a shadow over their happiness with his underhand and despicable ways, but if it wasn't for him Abigail would never have run and never have met Rand. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
While the story is one of the Runaway Brides of the West series, it will read as a stand-alone. These books are clean historical westerns. The story begins in Bartlesfield, Texas, in the early summer of 1870. Abigail Willoughby, twenty-six years old, knows she must run away to avoid an arranged marriage to a ranching neighbor, Simon Champion. With the help of a friend, she will take a stage and leave, heading north.
The story will also have Randall ‘Rand’ McIver of Bent River Ranch in Cripple Creek, Colorado, needing a housekeeper and someone to cook. While several friends suggest marriage, Rand doesn’t have the time to court, much less marry. He is too busy trying to resurrect the ranch left to him by his late Uncle.
The story’s plot will have Abigail arriving in Cripple Creek area and hoping it will be somewhere her father can’t find her. Meeting the Sheriff, she asks about employment opportunities, and he suggests taking her to Bent River Ranch to meet Rand McIver and work as a housekeeper and cook. The story will have Abigail hired, but she has been raised in a pampered home, never having to cook or clean—but how hard can it be? It isn’t long before word comes to the Sheriff that a woman from Texas has run away, and he confirms it is Abigail. What will happen since she is old enough to make her own choices? Not only that, but the good folks of Cripple Creek are also up in arms about two single people alone at the ranch.
I liked the characters and storyline. Rand offers marriage to protect Abigail from her father and to stop the nosey people from gossiping. Will these two realize that they have developed feelings for one another? How will Abigail handle issues back in Texas with her father?
“Hey, housekeepers aren’t easy to come by around here. When you get one you like, a man’s gotta do what he can to hold onto her.”
The story is a clean historical tale with plenty of angst, mystery, and new skills to preserve along the way. I loved the faith in God that Abigail has, and eventually how Rand comes back to God. Rather than being bitter with her father, and how she comes up with a reasonable solution—one that will also benefit her husband. The book does have an epilogue and the coveted happily-ever-after ending.
This is a sweet, heartwarming book, that I absolutely loved. Abigail and Rand are wonderful characters and after they get to know each other, seem like they were made for each other. I really enjoyed the storyline and even though Abigail and Rand had a marriage of convenience, they were both right for each other. But, how long would it take for them to realize this? Abigail's faith in God helps her make the right decision, when her faith in what's right is challenged and maybe they can finally get a HEA. A great book that I highly recommend and think you will enjoy.
I read a lot of books and Nancy Fraser’s Abigail Runaway Brides of the West is a wonderful book. The plot is original and the story grabs you right away and it is so well written that you can’t stop reading until the end. Their are twists and turns you don’t see coming but the romance between the two of them is so amazing and seems so real. You know you are reading a great book when you are sad it’s ended and are still thinking about the people in the book hours later! I highly recommend this book.
This is a tale of a poor, beautiful, young woman, Abigail and her father’s arranging a marriage of convenience against her wishes. She arrives in a small town and answered an advertisement by Randall for a cook and housekeeper, and only knows how to cook chili. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.
I so enjoyed Rand and Abigail’s story with being arranged to marry her neighbor to finding what her father had done to her. Wonderful characters and a delightful story. Faith is so important to Abigail and getting Rand back to church is a quest all on its own. Great series!
I enjoyed this story from the stagecoach ride to the rich girl realizing she's in over her head. Great characters. I enjoyed Rand as he began to figure Abigail out. A good plot with a moral dilemma to resolve. A sweet read.
Abby carefully planned her escape from a marriage arrangement made without her consent. Working as Rand's housekeeper, she is content until outside influences push them into marriage and her past must be confronted.
I enjoyed the story! Abigail ran away from an arranged marriage and found her happily ever after in an unexpected place! I recommend reading this book!
