In this poignant, hilarious, and deeply intimate call to arms, Hollywood’s most powerful woman, the mega-talented creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder reveals how saying YES changed her life—and how it can change yours too.
She’s the creator and producer of some of the most groundbreaking and audacious shows on television today: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder. Her iconic characters—Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Olivia Pope, Annalise Keating—live boldly and speak their minds. So who would suspect that Shonda Rhimes, the mega talent who owns Thursday night television (#TGIT), is an introvert? That she hired a publicist so she could avoid public appearances? That she hugged walls at splashy parties and suffered panic attacks before media interviews so severe she remembered nothing afterward?
Before her Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes was an expert at declining invitations others would leap to accept. With three children at home and three hit television shows on TV, it was easy to say that she was simply too busy. But in truth, she was also afraid. Afraid of cocktail party faux pas like chucking a chicken bone across a room; petrified of live television appearances where Shonda Rhimes could trip and fall and bleed out right there in front of a live studio audience; terrified of the difficult conversations that came so easily to her characters on-screen. In the before, Shonda’s introvert life revolved around burying herself in work, snuggling her children, and comforting herself with food.
And then, on Thanksgiving 2013, Shonda’s sister muttered something that was both a wake up and a call to arms: You never say yes to anything.
The comment sat like a grenade, until it detonated. Then Shonda, the youngest of six children from a supremely competitive family, knew she had to embrace the challenge: for one year, she would say YES to everything that scared her.
This poignant, intimate, and hilarious memoir explores Shonda’s life before her Year of Yes—from her nerdy, book-loving childhood creating imaginary friends to her devotion to creating television characters who reflected the world she saw around her (like Cristina Yang, whose ultimate goal wasn’t marriage, and Cyrus Beene, who is a Republican and gay). And it chronicles her life after her Year of Yes had begun—when Shonda forced herself out of the house and onto the stage, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and giving the Dartmouth Commencement speech; when she learned to say yes to her health, yes to play and she stepped out of the shadows and into the sun; when she learned to explore, empower, applaud, and love her truest self. Yes.
This wildly candid and compulsively readable book reveals how the mega talented Shonda Rhimes, an unexpected introvert, achieved badassery worthy of a Shondaland character. And how you can, too.
TITLE: INSIDE BRIDGERTON AUTHOR: Shonda Rhimes PUB DATE: 10.25.2022 Now Available
I love Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton, no I am obsessed and this book game all the behind-the-scenes starting from the time when Rhimes was sick in bed with a flu happened to pick up an unlikely period romance, Julia Quinn’s Duke and I, and then to the reality of a Netflix show so popular it is now in it’s second season.
About the book “Inside Bridgerton is the intimate behind-the-scenes story of the hit Shondaland series on Netflix. Shondaland executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers offer exclusive insights, and introduce you to the series writers, producers, directors, cast, crew, and talented creatives who brought Julia Quinn’s beloved novels to the screen. Full-color and beautifully designed, Inside Bridgerton is the official book about the show, and includes never-before-seen photographs, firsthand accounts on casting, insight into the decisions behind the costumes and sets, directors’ accounts on filming your favorite scenes, and more from the creative minds that launched a cultural phenomenon”.
This hefty hard cover is absolutely beautiful, printed glossy with candid photographs of the filming process and all the people that made the show the success it is. Any fan would love this book so think about this during the holiday gifting season. It’s just a gorgeous coffee table book.
Overall, this was a solid look at the behind the scenes of making the Bridgerton show. While I'm kind of obsessive and knew a bit already, there were a LOT of details that I hadn't known about! So that's the positive.
The first negative is that they finally addressed how old Daphne was in the show and um EXCUSE ME?? She was 18? I assumed she was aged down from the book since she was a debutante but that's such a gross age gap to me, considering the Duke is 27 or 28. (Since he's the same age as Anthony, as they were in the same year at school).
The second, and most pressing, negative is that it seems the show creators really decided to dig their feet in about the controversial scene in season one when Daphne SA-ed Simon, which was so incredibly depressing to read. The team boasted how they gladly accepted the "sexual violence" warning from Netflix for all 8 episodes because of that scene because they felt it was too crucial to her character to omit. The writers/directors/producers created electrifying genius in this show, but in that moment I felt incredibly hurt and let down that they hadn't done any further reflection upon the harm this scene caused.
While I bought this book as a way to whet my appetite while I wait for the Queen Charlotte show and book, as well as Season 3 of Bridgerton, this probably honestly served to put the brakes and make me re-evalute this series. Definitely something to ruminate on.
This is the kind of coffee-table book that gets pushed hard around the holidays for easy gift-giving. It's clear who you buy it for (in this case, the person who wouldn't shut up about Bridgerton this past March) (for example ME) but it doesn't come with the sense of obligation that makes people nervous to gift a full-length book.
Because people buy them as gifts based just on the title, these books are often made quickly and aren't actually much good to read. Happily, Inside Bridgerton is an exception. The hero in this is the pictures, which are as HUGE and glossy as promised. Lots of them are images we've seen before, but enough of them are new to make it worthwhile. The reading experience is reminiscent of a magazine, but a very high-quality one. The short "articles" are simple and blandly congratulatory but offered a surprising amount of interesting information. This book was thoughtfully curated with the actual reader in mind.
The hardcover is high-quality and the price reflects it. I'm not sure I'd pay sticker price for this, even as a gift, but if you find it at a discount it makes a lovely gift or coffee-table piece.
I received a copy of this title at no cost from the publisher via Dart Frogg Communications in expectation of a social media post. No money changed hands for this review and all opinions are my own.
As somebody who previously dreamed about becoming a movie director, I soaked this book right up. The size and scope of Bridgerton really shocked me, and I can only applaud Shondaland for creating such an amazing show despite all difficulties. I don’t think this book was meant to be read front to back, but hey, I’m weird. And I did it anyway. That’s how I noticed that some of the writing wasn’t great and should have been edited. The book contains mostly interviews, which were often taken out of context. Sadly, we also get some weird image/text issues. A few pages actually contain images which aren’t related to the text. Nevertheless, this is an amazing resource for movie fans and aspiring directors/writers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Being the huge fan of Bridgerton I am, I was beyond excited to receive a copy of this sensational book. It’s always enlightening to get behind the scenes and become immersed in something you love. Not only is this a stunning book visually but it is filled to the brim with such interesting facts and details. This book now has pride of place on my bookshelves.
‘We wrote this book to share with you the craftsmanship, effort, and beauty of what went into building the world of Bridgerton. We also wrote this book to sneak you a few behind-the-scenes secrets. After all, we could not enter the world of Lady Whistledown without a few whispers of hot gossip, could we? Settle in. Loosen your corset. Gentle Reader, this is for you.’
As Julia Quinn herself states in the book, ‘It was utterly brilliant. Different, yes, but beautifully done in a way that I never would have considered. It was perfect.’ This tome is filled with gorgeous glossy photos from behind the scenes. It was fabulous to learn of the various locations used for filming and how a production of this magnitude is undertaken. For example, the chapter on the complexities of production was such an eye opener with details of how characters would go through 10-15 people before arriving on set!
The book is divided into sections: 1.Writing the World 2.Hiring the World 3.Defining the Ton 4.Building the World 5.Beyond the Page 6.Visualising the World. Within these chapters there is such a range of information on topics from the costuming including jewelry and undergarments (‘The factory ultimately held eighteen hundred dresses, all cataloged. Phoebe alone had eighty-six dresses.’); and of a particular personal interest, a historian who commented on matters of authenticity with everything from Regency slang to making readers aware of what it would have been like in reality:
‘In the period, the trees were lit up by lamps filled with whale oil- - which smelled dreadful, so the Pleasure Gardens would have absolutely stank.’
If you are a fan of Bridgerton (or even the logistics of a production of this magnitude) getting your hands on a copy of Inside Bridgerton is a no-brainer. It’s big, it’s brash and it is absolutely beautiful.
‘And so, Dearest Reader, here is hoping that you have delighted in this peek behind the scenes of Bridgerton. … Our hope is that this book makes you more interested, invested, and curious about Bridgerton, of course, but also about world-building in general, and the exquisite care that goes into every moment of production, whether it happens onscreen or off.’
This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. The quoted material may have changed in the final release.
Is this the fluffiest, least impactful book I'll read this year? Possibly. Was it also enjoyable and interesting read? Definitely. If you like Bridgerton, this is a super fun look behind the scenes!
Like millions of other people, I’m a fan of the Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn, but I was introduced to them by the Netflix series Bridgerton. With its modern spin on an inclusive Regency world, how could you not be bedazzled by the colours, jewels and food? This behind-the-scenes book is perfect for any fan of the show, and a great way to build up to Season 3 and Polin (that’s Penelope and Colin).
The book is lavishly illustrated with both posed photographs and behind the scenes shots of the shoots. It’s not uncommon to see Queen Charlotte sitting at a table laden with food in her OTT wig, surrounded by people in puffer jackets and jeans. At first it’s a little odd to see the contrast of history and modern, but you get used to it. (Also, you can pore over the detail of all the delicious looking food and flowers, something you don’t always get to dwell in the fast paced series).
Usually with a book accompanying a TV series or film, I can get through it in an afternoon. It’s usually a lot of pictures with not much text. Inside Bridgerton delivers on both the writing and picture front, which is really rare! It took me several days to get through this book. What’s also rare is that it goes deep – it’s not just interviews with the actors and a run down of episodes. The book assumes you, dearest reader, know your Bridgerton, and want more. It really does deliver on every aspect of production and goes in deeper to some key scenes, such as Daphne and Simon and the painting plus some lavish balls. I found the world building fascinating with the amount of detail that goes into everything from how quickly the actors speak to the use of silence to build tension. The way the crew shot Bridgerton was fascinating too, followed by editing done remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It could have turned out messily, but it all worked brilliantly.
There are interviews and explanations from a lot of the crew that also go into detail, so much so that I find myself wanting to rewatch the series so I can pick up on the lighting, music and costume details. This is definitely a book worthy of the series!
I saw this book and couldn't not get it. I got home and immediately began reading it; I am a huge fan of the show (especially season 1) and there are so many things about this show that are so intriguing because what we are shown is a whole new take on a period drama. In this book you are given the whole thought process of the creators and how they came up with the idea (the way Shonda thought of Bridgerton is luck!) and how their vision became a reality. You are taken on a journey through all of the departments that made the show; hair and makeup (I loved Queen Charlotte's wigs so I loved this bits), the actors view on their characters and different scenes they played (probably my favourite part), set design, music, editing, alternative endings and so much more. So, if you are a fan of the show, this book is a must!
Everything you wanted to know about the Netflix series Bridgerton but didn’t know who to ask. All aspects of the hit show are covered in detail, with plenty of photos (although I wished the photos had captions or matched the adjacent text better). Might have to rewatch seasons 1&2 now that I’ve read about the behind the scenes magic. How long do we have to wait for season 3?
Gorgeous photos! Gorgeous coffee table book! Fun inside look at the making of the series. Costumes, Covid protocols, choreography, music, wigs and casting are covered. Definitely recommend to fans of the series!
NO STARS! DO NOT BUY THIS *EXPENSIVE* BOOKS JUST LISTEN TO THE PODCAST FOR FREE!!!
Why is this book so expensive when all that I've read are either, I've already heard it from their podcast (for free), or shitty takes? If you have listened to their podcast about season 1 and 2, like me, then you will notice that when you read this book, you already know about all of this. There's no reason for this to be so expensive. Once again, Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers prove to not know anything about the book series they are adapting, if this book is not any more proof. There are also typos; calling Simone Ashley "Kate" instead of Simone (e.g.: "Kate: *Simone's words*"). They proved how they're so out of touch with their work to the point they're romanticizing SA (sexual assault) saying how Daphne taking advantage of Simon in season 1 was a vital scene and that it's "not as bad" as the book because Simon is sober. That does not make it any better. Assault is assault and Daphne assaulted Simon both in the book and in the show. The difference is they could have removed that scene and not included it in the show! It is NOT an important scene! It is NOT an empowering move for Daphne! Another thing they romanticized in this book, Betsy Beers specifically, is colonialism. Beers says, "Historically, there is a deep and entrenched connection between India and England, and we love the idea of including this beautiful Indian family--of the manor born--incorporated into society. It's such an organic part of British history." WHY is a white woman romanticizing colonialism??? I get that this is a romance show but it hasn't been a romance show since they started writing season 2. They call this a "romance show," an adaptation of the romance novels by Julia Quinn and yet sideline the season 2 romance leads (Kate and Anthony) to make room for their poorly written side-plots that will have nothing to do in future seasons (e.g., Jack Featherington, the Queen, etc). Not only is this evident in the show but also in the making of this book. Look at the cover. Do you see who has the biggest picture? That's right, Penelope and the Queen. Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes are so OBSESSED with them that they should just stop calling the show, "Bridgerton." Not only is the symmetry of the pictures bad but also the cover design. Did they get a free trial on Canva or what? Let's also talk about the title, "Inside Bridgerton." I may not agree with a lot of changes Chris Van Dusen has done with books 1 and 2/seasons 1 and 2, but I can't help but feel like how this is a discredit to the world HE created. Chris Van Dusen has done more research and reading of the Bridgerton books compared to Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers combined and yet here they are writing and publishing a book about a world they've claimed to create. Another thing I find annoying is how the rest of the Bridgertons (Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth) don't have their own sections in the book. Not even a mini one. Even Mary Sharma doesn't have a section in the book. Another proof of how they ignored Mary in season 2 when she had a lot of important scenes in the book. As I said, this book was expensive for no reason and it shouldn't have been created in the first place. Ignore the one star I put, I only did it because Goodreads asked for a rating. Zero stars.
I was so excited to get my hands on this book because I ADORE Bridgerton, particularly for its color-conscious casting and slow-burn of season two.
This book is filled with gorgeous behind-the-scenes photos. Given a lot of Bridgerton is filmed with green screens, I was so excited to see which locations actually existed in real life. There was also insights into casting, costumes, sets and some popular scenes.
Things I really enjoyed about this book:
🕯️ Learning about the regency rules and the ranks people held 🕯️ Understanding regency slang (foxed = drunk, rake = womaniser, leg shackle = marriage 😅) 🕯️ The detail that went into designing the costumes 🕯️ Insights into how they were able to film such a massive production with COVID restrictions 🕯️ Location lists so when I win the lottery and visit the UK I can check them all out
The issue of consent in *that* season one scene was addressed, but not well enough, in my opinion. I still think there was no need for the scene to make its way from page to screen especially since it wasn’t talked about properly.
This is a great coffee table book for people who love the tv show and want to know more!

The most impressive thing about this book is the aesthetics of the product. It's not a long book, but it's beautifully put together and is actually quite hefty! The pages are thick and glossy, which really serves to enhance the gorgeous photographs included throughout, and despite it being an 'outsize' book it's been very comfortable to sit with it propped against my knees to read. But the one thing that did bug me slightly was the constant changes in font size. I can't see that it's deliberate - on several occasions it happens within one 'article'. And I picked up on a few typos too.
Unfortunately, in my opinion the content doesn't match up to the looks. It mostly reads like a lot of self-congratulatory back slapping for a job well done, and while it appears to be split into 'chapters' mirroring the production process, there doesn't feel like very much depth of information or anecdotes from the making of the show. There are a couple of mentions of production difficulties (a roof caving in on freshly built sets etc), but there's no in-depth discussion of the effects these 'disasters' had, how they worked around them and so on. It seems to me that most major shows that do BTS books/interviews/documentaries make their production sound like a nightmare, and the way this us written just makes me feel like they've dropped in these little tidbits to join the club.
Although there is some input from the cast, it is quite limited and, again, it's not really about their filming experiences or getting under the surface of their roles. Instead, it all feels quite superficial; like they were only included as an afterthought. Likewise, if you are looking to work in the film/TV industry as a member of crew, you might find some interesting insights in here, but nothing detailed enough to give a full understanding of these important roles.
I absolutely love the series and think everyone involved deserves all the praise they can get. But this just doesn't shine enough of a light on all their hard work.
I was looking forward to this and getting some insight into the television series, specifically why they changed some things from the books I love so much. I was disappointed not to find out much about the adaptation from the books to the screen, mainly why the book is 4 stars rather than 5 stars. I've been disappointed in the screen adaptation so far and my favourite books are still to come so I'm really hoping it gets better.
Rege Jean Page obviously created quite a following for himself for his turn in the first series of Bridgerton, but not having him return for guest appearances in future series also puts Phoebe Dyvenor's appearance in doubt. It says in this book that having Simon return would have changed the story. No, not having him return changed the story. He was supposed to be there ribbing Daphne and Anthony during the game of Pall Mall in the books and he makes an appearance with Daphne hosting a ball during Colin and Penelope's story, throwing his weight behind Penelope's position as Lady Whistledown.
I did think it was nice that they didn't just list the full cast in the back of the book, but also the complete crew as well. It's a beautiful book with glossy pages and plenty of colour photos of behind the scenes moments and candids. There are details about the process of making the show that I didn't know before.
There are lots of interviews throughout with the likes of Shonda Rhimes, Phoebe Dyvenor, Julie Walters, and Simone Ashley, as well as people who worked on costume, wigs, location scouting and music. Some of the images don't quite seem to go with the interviews they accompany so there is a bit of a disconnect there, almost like they wanted to use the image but weren't quite sure where to put it.
A great book for anyone who loves the TV show, but if you want to know exactly how they adapted the books to the screen you may be a little disappointed.
My husband and I watched Seasons 1 and 2 of Netflix's "Bridgerton" series and enjoyed them quite a bit. So when for Valentine's Day 2023 he gave me this large, full-cover, behind-the-scenes book about making the series, I was thrilled! It's a great read and I learned so much about the design, preparation, and decision making that went into pulling off a show of this scale.
Shonda Rhimes ("Grey's Anatomy", "Scandal") is an impressive storyteller, so I was interested to learn more about her methods. However, this book isn't a Rhimes memoir, nor is it just a discussion between higher-ups at Shondaland and directors on the show. I love that this book elevates stories from the cast, crew, and support staff, which are key to filmmaking but which we don't often hear. This is a celebration of the creative process, as so much work by so many people went into the casting, costuming, choreography, locations and set design, cinematography, and music.
This is a book for fans of "Bridgerton", but also all those interested in filmmaking. The spirit of this work brings me back to all those "Lord of the Rings" and "The Incredibles" behind-the-scenes videos I watched growing up. So glad I read this. What great hype for the Queen Charlotte prequel as well as ColinxPenelope's Season 3. Bring it on!
Clearly I'm going to need to buy a coffee table to display this gem. Inside Bridgerton is as lavish as the Regency Era itself. The dust cover is lovely, and you should prepare to be delighted by the ornate endsheets inside both the front and back covers. It's a substantial book, weighing nearly three pounds, so that coffee table will need to have well-braced legs.
Every turn of a page reveals glorious photography. Many of the photographs are 'behind the scenes' shots. My favorites are the rather surreal images featuring the lavish sets... with the cameras and crew included.
Eye candy aside, there's plenty to read as well. Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers speak at length about how Bridgerton came to be, captured in conversational voices that are pleasant to read. There are many mini-interviews with just about everyone who worked on the show, both in front of the camera and out of sight. And all sorts of other bits and pieces. I get the feeling that the authors really didn't want to leave anything out!
I especially enjoyed learning more about location hunting, and the many bits of information about the Regency era, as I'm usually a Victorian era fangirl.
This is a book to re-visit time and time again. There's just so much included! One read-through is not enough. Now please excuse me, I must get to the furniture shops and order that coffee table.
I borrowed this from the library, fully expecting to just skim the pages and primarily look at the photographs. Instead, I found myself reading every page from cover-to-cover, obsessing over all the details. It is a fascinating look behind the scenes of the show, specifically seasons 1 & 2. If you’ve read the books, it’s especially interesting to learn about how they translated the books to the screen and the thought process behind some of the decisions that were made…. i.e. where they wanted to match the books as closely as possible vs where they subtracted, changed, or added to the plot and world of the books. After reading this book, I went back for a full rewatch of the show with lots of fun new perspectives and details to look for.
Important Note: This book is not organized into any kind of narrative from a single author. The content is grouped loosely by the stages of production…from ideation, to writing, to casting, to set design, to costumes, to rehearsals, to filming locations, to editing, etc. It also includes quotes and perspectives from a ton of different people involved: show creator, book author, directors, choreographers, costume designers, etc. PLUS the actors themselves.
I really wanted to love this book because I love the show and the original books, but I just couldn't. The reasons for this are simple. This book is full to the brim with political opinions and false "historical" information from a supposed historian. I'm sorry, but you can't call yourself an historian if you talk about women in Regency England wearing corsets. (Corsets wouldn't be invented for decades, and therefore couldn't possibly be worn by Regency women which is something an historian of the time period would know. Women in the Regency period wore stays which are quite different.) This was one of just many instances that made me doubt that their historical parts were even worth reading. There were also loads of parts dedicated to different people spouting their political opinions and views on history. I don't care if someone has an opinion that's different from mine, but I don't want to read about it in a book that advertises it's a behind-the-scenes book. I'd like to read the secrets of the show which there weren't many of.
The beautiful pictures are easily the best part of this book. I'm just sad there weren't more of them to make up for the lack of quality in the writing.
I am a huge fan of Bridgerton, and when I discovered there was a book like this in the series, I knew I had to get my hands on it! The book is titled "Inside Bridgerton," and it has been an absolute delight to read. Having just finished rewatching the earlier seasons and currently having just binge-watched the new one, this book was the perfect companion.
It has made me want to re-read the novels, and I'm eager to dive back into the world of the Bridgerton family. One of the most fascinating aspects of "Inside Bridgerton" is how it delves into the intricacies of the show's production. Reading about how they crafted the scenes, designed the costumes, and handled the overall production was incredibly fun to read.
There were so many fun and interesting tidbits that I had no idea about until I read this book. For instance, learning about the behind-the-scenes decisions, the inspirations for certain artistic choices, and the challenges the crew faced added a whole new layer of appreciation for the series. The behind-the-scenes photographs were a real treat, offering a glimpse into moments and details that viewers wouldn't normally get to see.
