The bubbly fun of a rom-com meets the irresistible quirkiness of a cozy mystery in this buoyant new rom-cozy set off the coast of Southern California. It’s the perfect vacation spot for those who want to get away from it all. Unfortunately for Santa Catalina boat tour guide Whitney Dagner and her chonky cat Whiskers, it’s also the perfect vacation spot for people who want to get away with murder…
"A purrrfect mystery to curl up with!" - Modern Cat
When she’s not piloting a glass bottom boat, showing the sights to tourists, Whit sells seashells by the seashore—among many other sea and sand souvenirs—to help keep her family shop, Nautically Yours, afloat. It’s a far cry from her corporate climbing ladder life in Los Angeles, but Whit and her frisky feline, Whiskers, love calling Catalina home and being close to family. Especially Whit’s grandmother Goldy, a fun and feisty senior who always marched to the beat of a different drum.
In her youth, Goldy was an item with a Catalina catch named Darren. But it was actually a ruse to fool Darren’s parents who wouldn’t have accepted his preference for men. Eventually, he left the island and chose the life—and life-partner—he wanted for himself. Back in town for his mother’s funeral, Darren takes the opportunity to heal his open wounds, and settle some scores.
In a surprise to the residents, Darren produced a documentary about the history of Catalina, and has arranged a premiere screening in the local theater. But his film career is cut short when his partner’s dead body is discovered the night before the opening. Rumors swirl about Darren’s past, along with his partner’s—and the things they’ve done—giving a lot of folks a lot of motives. Now, it’s up to Whit and her boyfriend policeman to catch a killer, and uncover just how much Grandma Goldy knows about the back door deals tied to Darren’s past . . .
After writing plays for her friends to act out as a kid, bad poetry in high school, and her high school Alma Mater song, Gabby Allan finally found her true passion—cozy mysteries. Being able to share her world with readers, one laugh at a time, and touch people’s hearts with her down-to-earth characters makes for the best job ever. This California girl now lives with her husband, daughter, and two insane dogs in Central Pennsylvania where she is hard at work on her next novel.
This is the third book in the Whit and Whiskers mystery series and I have enjoyed them all quite a bit so far. I thought the second half of this one was far better than the first half mostly because I struggled with Goldy in this one. I have really loved her in the previous books, but her insistence on Whit investigating, while holding back vital information, and ignoring any evidence that suggests her old friend did anything wrong drove me nuts. If she trusts her granddaughter to help solve crimes she needs to trust her a little. I thought the mystery itself was pretty good and I did enjoy the resolution quite a bit. Goldy’s old boyfriend and one of her oldest friends is in town for the funeral of his mother. He hopes to show a movie he has worked on to the community but before they can even finish getting ready a body appears. Whit is determined to stay out of it this time, but because her friend is bound to be the main suspect Goldy insists she investigates.
This book straddles both rom-com and cozy mystery as it is really some of both. No matter, it's certainly a fun read.

My Thoughts: The grandmother, Goldy, was the character I enjoyed most. She is quite a character. Domineering, yet quite respected, and everyone seemed to jump and try to do whatever she asked - no matter how strange. Whit is the one who is the investigator and she seemed to have good instincts and a dedictaion to her community. She followed clues relentlessly. I wasn't sure whether Darren was a good guy or bad during most of the book - Goldy seemed to defend him totally and she seemed sure he was good and couldn't be the murderer.
I recommend this to anyone who likes a fun mystery with a little romance and good banter. Thanks to Kensington Books through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on July 25, 2023.
I was totally shocked by all the twists and turns in All That Glitters Isn't Old. Whit has a souvenir shop, she works on the family glass bottom boat, giving tours, and she also gets herself mixed up with murder investigations. She has a spunky grandmother, Goldy, and her grandfather, Pops. When a close friend of Goldy's returns for his mother's funeral, it's like opening a Pandora's Box, and nothing good is happening. There's tension between Whit's grandparents, and it only gets worse when Goldy refuses to believe her first love is capable of murder. I loved this book and was stunned by the conclusion, I had no idea how it was going to end. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book. #AllThatGlittersIsntOld #NetGalley.
I didn’t like the first part of this book. I didn’t like that Goldie was pushing Whitney to investigate without telling her what she needed to know, that she was so adamantly defending Darren to the exclusion of everyone else.. The later part of the book was better, I thought more interesting, more action. I was surprised by the outcome of the bad guy., and Darren. #AllThatGlittersIsntOld #NetGalley
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of ALL THAT GLITTERS ISNT OLD (Book 3 of the Whit and Whiskers mysteries) by Gabby Allan in exchange for an honest review. Everyone knows that Whit's nana, Goldy, is a force majeure. It surprises no one when Goldy manages to rope Whit into accompanying her to a funeral for a woman Whit had never met. This one capitulation to Goldy's iron will embroils Whit into a convoluted investigation into her grandmother's past. Digging up past scandals can be dangerous.
I enjoyed this book and like the series. I recommend this book to fans of cozy murder mysteries featuring tourism, small businesses, and Nanas with strong personalities.
Whit Danger meets the man her grandfather almost lost her grandmother to when they were younger. Turns out the man was a good friend of Goldy’s, so good that when he’s accused of murdering his boyfriend, Goldy asks Whit to find the true murderer. While Whit can’t say no to Goldy, she’s not quite sure she believes in Darren’s innocence. There’s something strange happening on the Island and Whit can’t just stand by and wait for the police to figure it out.
With family secrets, death, murder, an octopus and a cute kitty, you’ll enjoy figuring this one along side Whit and the gang. With a few suspects that have you going back and forth, you’ll be guessing right up to the end just whodunit.
Whitney doesn't mind working several part-time jobs to stay on Catalina Island, where she was raised and where her diver-boyfriend lives too. But her grandmother Goldy keeps forcing her into uncomfortable situations, like attending the funeral of a reclusive old lady. When the dead woman's son appears after years off-island, Whit is shocked that her grandmother greets him as an old boyfriend, although he seems to be gay. He's made a movie about the island, but before the premiere Darren's new lover is found dead, and as about the only one who knows him, Darren becomes the leading suspect. Whit is tagged by Goldy as the person who will clear him, but Whit is not too sure that he's not guilty. ()Note to fans: Whiskers, Whit's cat, doesn't do much in this one.)
Honestly, not my favorite book. I wanted to like these characters but Goldy and Whit came off a bit irritating and condescending. The scene with the police force being on her side was a bit of a stretch, I think. That being said, it was a very interesting book and the plot was unique. The rest of the book was enjoyable.
I’m a huge cozy fan and highly recommend this book for other cozy lovers! This is the third book in the series, it needs to be read in order as the characters develop throughout. The characters are quirky, the setting is interesting and the storyline is fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The main characters are fun, make mistakes, and are very loyal to one another. I especially love the interactions between Whit and her grandmother, Goldy. There’s some conflict there with Goldy wanting Whit to investigate (to clear her childhood friend’s name), but not willing to give Whit important details. But there is clearly love and trust between the two. The other characters come to life as well, and really add to the depth of the story. Whit’s policeman boyfriend is no slouch, and good at his job, but as he,says, he has to follow the evidence, and there is a lot of evidence pointing at Goldy’s friend. I’m not fond of the way he sometimes talks to Whit, but he’s trying to keep her safe and she won’t stay out of the investigation. She never wanted to be involved, but Goldy insisted, and Whit couldn’t say no. I can see why Felix got so frustrated about the situation!
The plot is believable and consistent throughout the book. The small town atmosphere doesn’t disappoint either! They live on Catalina, a small island off the west coast, and they get around on golf carts or walking. It seems like a wonderful place to live, snorkel, and boat. Whiskers, the cat, is frisky and it’s funny how she sometimes snubs Whit and goes to Felix instead.
I received an ARC (advanced reader’s copy) of All That Glitters Isn’t Old from the author, Gabby Allan, in exchange for an honest review.
What I liked: I am absolutely in love with this series. The setting of Catalina Island is so interesting. It makes me want to go there and visit. The author gives us so much detail without hitting us over the head with boring descriptions – like everyone drives golf carts and they don’t go over 15 mph. Cars are rare on the island. The characters are hilarious. The main character, Whitney (Whit) comes across as scatter-brained at times, but she’s really not. Everyone looks to her to solve the mystery because she is able to take what seems like insignificant facts and put them together in a way that makes sense. She has a small group of friends (Felix, her boyfriend and Maribel, her roommate), her brother, and her grandparents to help her out. Her grandmother (do not ever call her that) Goldy is a hoot and a half.
In this story, an old friend of Goldy’s comes back to the island for his mother’s funeral, along with his boyfriend. When the boyfriend ends up dead, Goldy wants Whit to look into it. Whit is caught in a hard place to be—she can’t deny Goldy, but she promised the new police chief she’d stay out of the investigation. Unfortunately, things go south very quickly with theft, smuggling, an old death discovered, and more. And there’s an interesting surprise twist at the end.
What I didn’t like: Nothing! This was a fun book.
Recommendation: Highly recommended. Though it’s not necessary, I do suggest you start with the first book in the series so you get all the background on Whit and her team. You won’t be sorry. These are quick, fun reads in an interesting and real setting.

All That Glitters Isn’t Old (Whit & Whiskers 3) Gabby Allen
Gabby Allen is the pseudonym of Misty Simon. She has written Much Ado About Nauticaling, and Something Fishy This Way Comes in the Whit & Whiskers mystery series.
Avalon Bay is on Catalina Island off the coast of California. Whitney Dagner recently moved back home and started a new life away from her high-powered job. She runs Dame of the Sea. a trinket shop. Today she has to close down to accompany Goldy to a funeral. Therese Milner is Goldy’s ex-fiance Darren’s mother. Turns out they weren’t really in a relationship he was gay and running from an arranged marriage. At the graveside, Goldy and Darren see each other for the first time in years. Darren’s brought his new boyfriend to the funeral. The funeral is almost finished when who else shows up… the woman he ran from! Elsie uses her car to run over Therese’s burial site, flipping over the casket and releasing the body!
Felix Ramirez, her boyfriend is a private and police scuba diver instructor. He takes Whit out after the aborted funeral, to see some new sights. While exploring Whit comes upon a cave filled with debris, the broken crates have a weird logo.
Whit has trouble telling Goldy no and this gets her into much trouble, including being a guest at a funeral, a murderous theater premier, and investigating a murder for a man she doesn’t particularly like!
This book was a solid mystery with enough surprises and turns to keep me quickly flipping pages. While, there are plenty of both caring and funny moments, to keep it a cozy rather than a thriller. I became annoyed with the way Goldy treated her family. This detracted from the story for me. Because while I understood the obligation that Whitney feels to Goldy & Thomas Dagner, her grandparents, and even Nick, her brother. I do think her Goldy abuses this and her apology just didn’t cut it for me.
3.5***
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC. #Netgalley #AllThatGlittersIsn’tOld #Whit&Whiskers #GabbyAllen #cozy
ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN'T OLD by Gabby Allan The Third Whit and Whiskers Mystery
Tensions run high when Goldy's old flame returns to Catalina Island. Darren is not only there for his mother's funeral, but is premiering a film he created about the small island community. When his boyfriend falls to his death from the catwalk of the theatre what first appears to be a tragic accident starts to look like murder. Darren becomes the prime suspect, but Goldy insists he's innocent and demands Whit find out who, if anyone, killed his boyfriend. Whit will have to put her business on hold once again as she searches for the truth while also trying to rein Goldy in and be peacemaker between her and Pops, all while not stepping on the new police captain's toes!
The third Whit and Whiskers Mystery makes me grateful I'm not Whit and don't have to acquiesce to Goldie. Goldie I just wanted to smack for her blind devotion to Darren. I love how so much of the mystery plays to the unknown. Something is wrong, but we don't know just what. Something is going on on the island, but we don't know what. Things are just off, adding to the sense of unease and ratcheting up the suspense.
One of the things I like best about ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN'T OLD lies in those last two words of the title: ISN'T OLD. The drama revolves around older people. Older people who are vibrant (maybe too vibrant in Goldie's case) with important ideas and goals, who have a love life and the ability to carry out all of these things. Old people don't just vanish. They aren't invisible here. They play a vital role. I appreciate how important they and their actions are to the story-be they in their 70s or 90s! Add to the fact they can be good or bad people as well. I love that older people aren't shrugged off and play as pivotal a role in society as 20 and 30 somethings...perhaps even more so.
With some time in the sun and the water, an adorable octopus, and some crafty characters, ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN'T OLD is a fun mystery that proves that age is just a number and you shouldn't automatically trust your elders!
Octopus? I've heard of swimming with the dolphins but with....octopuses? Octopi? Actually, both are correct. I looked it up. Her boyfriend Felix sure takes her on some interesting outings.
As for the mystery. You've heard of wedding crashing. How about funeral crashing? It begins with a car careening through mourners at a funeral to literally crash into the casket and knock it off it's pedestal. Yikes. Whit didn't even want to be there, not really knowing the deceased, but what a rude introduction to her grandmother Goldy's former friend Darren. The driver, Elsie, seems to be there because she didn't want to waste a second reclaiming her old crush, Darren, never mind he's actually gay and there with his boyfriend Jericho, who later plummets to his death from the catwalk in the theater. She's acting unhinged, so could she be the killer?
That's just the beginning but here are some teasers. What don't we know about Darren's past? Turns out, lots. Bottom line, past secrets meet present. Why is Goldy so insistent Whitney investigate but isn't sharing the full back story? Will this derail Goldy and Pops/Thomas's long marriage? What will Whit name the octopus? Does Whiskers the cat more or less run Whitney's life? Cat owners, you know the answer to that one. And, oh, is Whitney going to lose her roommate to a better job when Maribel passes that last test to be a police officer? And, hmm, why is Whit carrying that postcard around? This one has multiple layers, for sure.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks - #KensingtonCozies for letting me tag along on this bit of a roller coaster ride. Gabby Allan was a new author to me but I'll definitely be back to see what Whit has has decided to do next about her own questions with the able assistance of boyfriend Felix.
The Whit and Whiskers Mystery series by Gabby Allan is a great series to get lost into. This series is set on the island of Catalina which is off the coast of California. The island is so small that residents get around on golf carts and everyone is on island time all the time....except when there is a murder !!
All That Glitters Isn't Old is the third book in this series and main character Whitney should be working in her touristy seaside shop, Dame of the Sea, or helping her brother Nick run the Nautically Yours, their glass bottomed tour boat, not helping an old friend of her grandmothers ... especially because he doesn't seem to want to help.
Darren, an old boyfriend of Goldy's returns to the island to attend his mother's funeral. While Darren and his boyfriend, Jericho, are there, they have arranged to show a film in the local theater that they were working on. Unfortunately when a group of them are at the theater setting up, Jericho drops to his death from the rafters.
Goldy insists that Whit find the killer because she knows that Darren did not kill Jericho. Whit isn't so sure that he is innocent and whenever she tries to talk to Darren, he is not willing to help. While Whit tries to look into Jericho's murder, her relationships with those closest to her are put to the test and the new police Captain doesn't want her anywhere near the case..... that is until he comes to her with an offer.
So it seems Whit has an in with Captain Ray but an out with all of the suspects. But she does not give up ... even when the case turns into something out of an Indiana Jones movie and then all she wants to do is grab a shovel and start digging.......
ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN’T OLD is the third book in the Whit and Whiskers Mystery series by Gabby Allan. Protagonist Whitney Dagner works at her family’s tourist trinket shop, Dame of the Sea, and alongside her brother taking tourists around Catalina Island on their glass-bottom boat. Having visited Catalina Island several times, I can attest that the author’s descriptive voice brings the area to life. Whitney is a fun character, and I enjoyed her breezy “voice” and her dedication to her family. Although she should probably learn to stand up to her grandmother, Goldy, once in a while. Quirky is the best word to describe Goldy, and she’s front-and-center this time around. And while she may not be the easiest person to love, she definitely adds character to the story.
The action starts early on when a car careens into a coffin during a grave-side funeral and the driver accosts the son of the deceased, Darren. Darren just so happens to have been Goldy’s long-ago boyfriend and from there, zany antics ensue. From a death resulting from falling from the catwalk of the theater, to smuggling, to a hidden cave, Whitney is pulled into the mix when her grandmother insists she get involved. The mystery is multi-faceted and kept me guessing the entire way with all the twists thrown in. If you like an island setting, quirky characters, humor, and puzzling mysteries to solve, All That Glitters Isn’t Old should be on your TBR pile!
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
All That Glitters Isn't Old is the 3rd Whit and Whiskers cozy mystery by Gabby Allan. Released 25th July 2023 by Kensington Books, it's 256 pages and is available in paerback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a fun light series which combines rom-com and cozy mystery. It's not -overly- heavy on the former, and readers who usually avoid romance altogether in their cozy reads won't be overwhelmed here, but there is significant rom-com content (fun and lighthearted). The mystery is well constructed and the dialogue is solid.
It's got an island paradise setting, with summer vibes and nice mystery; a perfect escapist read for a cold dark winter afternoon. It would make a good selection for public library acquisition, or for fans of island rom-com mysteries. With three books in the ongoing series, it would also be a good choice for a weekend binge/buddy read.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I absolutely love a good mystery story and Gabby Allan has the knack for making you feel cozy on Catalina Island. Enjoying the sun and ocean, shopping at the stores and getting an ice cream cone. Once you have all this pictured in your mind, bam!, there is a dead body. Darren and Goldy go way back and was a couple at one time. His mother passed away and he was on the island for her funeral. Elsie crashed the funeral literally and demanded Darren to be hers now that his mother is gone. What she didn’t know was, that Darren was with his partner, and she didn’t have a chance. Now starts the mystery of who done it and why? How is Goldy so sure Darren is innocent? People change over the years and not everybody is who they seem. Tension’s high, temper's flaring and Ray telling Whit to back off, everything goes into chaos, but the island sleuth has no intention to. The trail begins now and follow you must figure out the who done it and all the other questions that came up along the way. I really enjoyed the storyline and it had me guessing along the way and I did have the killer right. When the truth came out, I was shocked at who was who and did what. I love Whitney’s little octopus' friend and I hope he is in more books. As usual, I’m left heartbroken that the story is over, and I sure hope there is more to come.
Grab a drink, a snack and get comfy because you will not want to put this book down. All That Glitters Isn’t Old, the 3rd book in Gabby Allan’s Whit & Whiskers Mystery series, is a wild, action-packed ride from start to finish. I read this in one sitting. There are multiple mysteries to be solved, but are they all connected? The twists and turns just kept coming. I was able to figure out a few of the puzzle pieces, but I couldn’t connect them together. Characters are very well developed. It’s rare that the protagonist is my favorite character, but in this case, Whitney is my favorite. I like that she stands up for herself, though she does tend to let her grandmother, Goldy, manipulate her a little too often. Santa Catalina is a perfect seaside setting with small town charm, and a tight knit community. The big reveal was a surprise, followed by another surprise. I really can’t articulate just how much I loved this book. This is the first book I’ve read in the series, but I definitely be reading the first two books as soon as possible, and hope there are dozens more to come.
Many thanks to Gabby Allan for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
All That Glitters Isn't Old is the third book in the Whit and Whiskers Mystery series by Gabby Allan.
I really love this series and the unique premise. I have read the first two books in the series and couldn't wait for this third book!
Whitney Dagner works in the family business and sells odds and ends in Dame of the Sea. Her brother does tours around Catalina Island on the family's glass bottom boat. I absolutely love the glass bottom boat! It is so cool; the author does such a great job with her descriptions I feel like I am on that boat!
I love all the characters in this book. Whitney's grandmother Goldy can be quite pushy and poor Whitney. Goldy is eccentric at best, and definitely unique. She adds so much to the story, one of those love to hate characters.
The story starts with a car accident that leads to a multiple mystery. Goldy pushes Whiteny to investigate, and she can't say no to her.
I loved so many elements in this story, the caves, the smuggling and all the twists!
A well written cozy mystery with well fleshed out characters and a perfectly paced mystery.
Highly recommend this book and all the books in this series.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Sometimes a book has loads of elements that make it entertaining but it ends up getting bogged down in parts because it is not quite sure where it wants to go. This one has a heroine whose ego on occasion gets in her way. But she seems incapable of saying no to her grandmother who is beyond demanding. She is a bully. And she is also hell bent on proving her former boyfriend, with whom she shares some deep secrets, is innocent of killing his boyfriend. Enter the woman to whom he had been betrothed before he asked Goldy’s, the grandmother,, help in getting him off the island where he could live the gay life he wanted. Lots of potential but it gets a bit muddy.
When the story finds its footing and turns into a whodunit and a treasure hunt, it sheds the superfluous and turns into a good solid mystery with some unexpected twists before the end. There is a truly lovely bit with Whitney, our heroine, and a little octopus. Again, an unexpected bit of business but utterly charming. Whit does solve the mysteries and even gets recognition for her efforts. So from a so-so start, it packed a punch by the end. Four purrs and one paw up.
Whitney Dagner has settled in to her new home and career on Catalina Island when murder strikes again! Goldy's old boyfriend from her youth returns and when his young love falls to his death from the catwalk at the local theater. Was it an accident? Or murder?
There's so much going on in this book! Goldy's old boyfriend Darren is back in town, thugs are taking over Catalina Island, there's a litterer leaving crates on the beach, and Whitney is making friends with a super-intelligent octopus.
This is a really fun series. I love the island setting and I love how Whit's shop and her family situation gives her the flexibility to run around investigating. I must also admit some bias. A few years ago I attended a virtual author event where Gabby Allen talked about the first book in this series. She was really nice and had a great sense of humor and seemed like someone who would be a lot of fun to hang out with. That's how I first got started with this series and I definitely plan to continue!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Not every book is for every reader, and this series is just not for me. It's the second I've read, and problems I attributed to first in series bumps are, in the old computer phrasing, not bugs but features.
I especially did not care for the way the police chief was treated. As someone who reads way too many of these books, I've seen a lot where the police detective is a jerk and exists only to be a roadblock to Our Heroine solving the mystery; true, Ray tried to discourage Whitney but he was a nice guy which got him a dressing down by Whitney and every one on the island, apparently.
Whitmey's grandmother's refusal to share information while bullying her granddaughter into solving the case was obnoxious. But at least we all see where Whitney gets her bullying tendencies.
For me, the sad part is there was a good plot, one that could have been a real winner, but it was buried under tons of useless family drama and soap opera.
Whitney's grandmother Goldy helped Darren keep a secret for years- she dated him while knowing that he is gay. Now, though, he's out, proud, and with Jericho, who is killed at the theater where Darren's new documentary about Catalina is to be shown. Wait- back up- Darren is in town for his mother's funeral and Elsi, the woman he was supposed to marry turns up and causes, to put it mildly, a problem. Goldy knows Darren didn't kill Jericho and gets Whit to investigate, despite her promise to Felix, her LEO boyfriend that she won't. Know that Goldy is keeping even more from her family and this makes it tough for Whit, who, btw, also has to deal with Whiskers the cat being a pain. It's classic cozy territory in a terrific setting. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I read and enjoyed the first two books in the series - this would be fine as a standalone. Looking forward to the next one.
That Goldy just cracks me up! Whit was up and running as soon as the book started as far as riding herd on her outspoken grandma who’d feed me to the fishes if she heard me refer to her as a grandma lol. Pops, Whit’s grandpa’s probably my fave character. He sure loves his Goldy and despite some disagreements they had during the course of the book, all was well in their world again.
I don’t know that I ever liked Darren’s character mainly because I felt I couldn’t trust him, which was just how Whit felt too. But I definitely didn’t like Elsie since she wouldn’t leave poor Darren alone and be what he really was, not what she wanted him to be. The showdown was really cool and backup was there just when it was needed. Whit was getting a nice surprise from all this as well. This book releases next week on July 25, 2023.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Cozies via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
The past comes back in the graveyard and murder comes along for the ride. Whitney escaped the corporate life and returned to her zany family/boat tour business/gift shop/creation of puzzles and treasure maps on Catalina Island. She's also tiptoeing through a relationship with an old crush who is now a part time SCUBA diver for the police while running his own diving business. Grandma Goldy is a real hoot, and she's not the only one! The publisher's blurb is a pretty good hook, but the laughs are nonstop! Lots of misdirection, plot twists, red herrings, and humor that kept me turning pages! Loved it! I requested and received a free temporary e-book copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
Thank you Kensington and NetGalley for the eARC of All That Glitters Isn't Old! All opinions in this review are my own.
I always look forward to reading a Whit and Whiskers mystery in the summer! All That Glitters Isn't Old was a solid addition to the series. The third installment starts off action-packed but does slow down until speeding up again in the final third or so. I feel like this mystery required more background explanation than the previous two because of Goldie's history with Darren. There was definitely more than enough drama surrounding Darren and I liked how Whit was always never quite sure about him.
If you like cozy mysteries with humor and drama, you need check out the Whit and Whiskers series!
Usually read cozy mysteries in a few days but this took a few weeks. Struggled to finish this and only because I was curious about the actual villain. Skipped around, especially in the first part - slow to develop. Latter part picked up and there were a lot of mysteries twisted together. Did not really like Goldie. Obnoxious, pushy with a potty mouth. Felt badly for Gramps. Not sure why Whiskers is in the series title, as he was relegated to a very minor role. Got rather tired hearing about peanut butter and chocolate ice cream. The relationship with the police seemed strange. And I can't remember the main protagonist's name, which says something in itself. I didn't care for her attitude toward the police chief.
Lots of little mysteries adding up to one big mystery.
I stuck this under the "Spoiler Alert" to discuss some unsolved bits of evidence that wer mentioned repeatedly.
When Whit and Felix go snorkling and stop in a cave, Whit makes mention of a crate inside that she wants to return and clean up later. When Felix and Whit later return, the area has been cleaned up of all debris and there are both an awful, death-like stench and the odor of cleaning chemicals.
When all is said and done at the end, nothing is ever explained about what caused the stench and who did the clean up and why? It's an open and unresolved plot point.
And lastly, there's no reason given to explain why Jericho/Sammie fell silently to his death, if Stu only pushed him to get by.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
