Fanfreakingtastic! Unbelievably Perfect! My oldest and I absolutely LOVE the FrightVision series. Each time we pick up the next book we can’t help but devour it. The Attack Of The Yellow Smart Sack was one of our favourites so far. So eerie and exciting, you can’t help but want to know what happens in the end. Not only are the FrightVision books fun to read yourself or with your kids but they create the most exciting discussions. My son and I have the most fun getting to discuss what we just read and trying to come up with ideas on what we think its going to happen. We can not recommended these books enough! Perfect for readers of ANY age! Thank you so much Crantz for sending us this copy to read! Now on to THE CURSED COIN 2 !!!!!
Thank you to the author, who provided me this book as part of the FrightVision Brand Advocates program, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Seventh-grader Lewis Izinger has finally gotten his hands on the Holy Grail of middle school popularity: The high-end Yellow Smart Sack. In a spiel reminiscent of a 90s late-night As Seen on TV infomercial, this backpack slices, dices, and makes you smarter, taller, better looking. But too late Lewis realizes that the Smart Sack isn’t just bag, or even a pet simulation: It’s a parasite looking to take over its owner!
Now with the help of his best friend Justin, Lewis must rush to find a way to defeat his Smart Sack before its too late to save his life and his classmates’.
At 128 pages, this volume is suitable for Grades 3-6. Chapters are short enough and antics are funny enough to engage a reluctant reader.
Loved
Lewis is very relatable – funnny, engaging, down-to-earth, and learns his lesson (don’t turn your back on your friends; tackle serious problems head-on and with help from others) quickly and with humility.
Unexpected plot devices leveraging climate change, the scientific method, and info about parasites, that somehow work despite being educational. The climate change piece (extinct animals; knife through the heart!) promoted a great discussion with my daughter.
Lack of physical description of most of the characters (especially Lewis & his close circle), lets any child co-create a diverse cast.
The end of this book was absolutely brilliant. I don’t post spoilers. 🙂
Caveats
Some irresponsible action by Lewis and Justin (breaking into the chemistry lab and attempting to poison Jasper the Smart Sack with pilfered poison). He does get sick and learn from the experience.
The book’s structure (started at Chapter 23, then jumped back to Chapger 1) threw my nine-year-old daughter. I thought it was fun and cool. Split the difference?
So, book 5 had a terrifying ending that made it my favorite one so far. And while I still say that ending was the most terrifying of them all thus far (albeit this ending definitely could give you chills), I definitely gotta say the rest of this book made this one probably the best one so far on my first read through them all. For starters, starting out after the whole story with a chapter after the final one (not counting the epilogue, though that just directly follows what happened there) was a choice I thought was strange at first, though it did make me wonder what was up with Lewis attacking that little girl's backpack. It didn't take way too long for us to get enough context for why that happened. After he got the Smart Sack, we get a continuously growing sense of fear with each chapter once he starts noticing something's up with it.
And I definitely gotta say, I never thought anyone could write a story that makes a *backpack* of all things scary, but holy crap, the author managed it. And I kept getting more scared for most of the remainder of this book. And I also have to say, the way they figured out how to kill all the Smart Sacks was actually brilliant in my opinion. Climate change was referenced a few times through the book, which their teacher had explained it caused a few species to go extinct (sadly), and that ended up being the way to save all the students that had the Smart Sacks on their backs. I loved it!
Also, you'd think that song would've gotten annoying (I thought it was at first), but it somehow managed to add to the terror for me. Especially with Jasper (Lewis's Smart Sack) using it as a weapon at one point.
I definitely recommend this one! It was the best so far!

My daughter and I have read several of the FrightVision Books and we loved this one so much! It was very creative and I know she will probably not choose a yellow backpack for school after this book. This book is funny and spooky but not too scary and will make a great bedtime story. A young boy just has to have the Yellow Smart Sack, the bookbag all the kids want. He discovers that there is much more to the bookbag than meets the eye. If you are a Goosebumps fan, these books are some that you will want to read. It's great for kids to read and to encourage reading as each chapter leaves you wanting more!
This was a very spooky and interesting book. I really feel like it has a “technology isn’t always a good thing” kind of moral to the story.
Lewis wants the newest backpack, a yellow smart sack. It’s as light as a feather, no matter how much stuff it has in it. It can follow verbal commands, help with school tests, and so much more!
But all that comes at a price. A price Lewis decides he doesn’t want to pay.

Seriously, can’t get enough of these books! Each one is just better and better! I’m incredibly grateful for each and every one of these books from FrightVision! Through these books my daughter has discovered the magic that comes from reading! Every day she comes to me asking to read and every day she has more excitement and ideas about these worlds we dive into.
