Trailer Park Vampire #1

Shotguns and Shifters

Rate this book
The day the red fog rolled in, everything in Windy Ridge changed. Neighbors and friends I’d grown up with got turned into wolfmen, lizardmen, gargoyles, and other unmentionables. As for me? I got turned into a vampire. Most folk thought the rapture was upon us but soon it was fairly obvious that we weren’t playing witness to some holy event. In fact, I was fairly sure we’d just witnessed something mostly unholy. Regardless, life in our little town in the middle of the Ozarks returned to what passed for normal. Until two human outsiders rolled into town. Because I was one of few residents who still appeared human, I was responsible for making sure the town went into hiding until them humans moved right on out again. But what I wasn’t planning on was the fact that one of the strangers was none other than Dean Hawke, a man I hadn’t seen in twenty-three years—a man who also happened to be my high-school sweetheart. But wait. There’s more… Not only had my ex-boyfriend walked right back into my sorry life, but he was also the newly appointed ‘Sheriff of Windy Ridge’—and his first assignment was investigating accounts of a naked man who was terrorizing locals. Now if that weren’t enough to ruin a vamp’s day, Sheriff Dean Hawke had, like George Clooney, only gotten better with age, and I was pretty sure all those real deep looks he kept giving me had their own kind of meaning. But between trying to keep the town’s secret under wraps, spearheading my own investigation into the naked man with a bunch of hillbilly monster chasers, working my shift as a waitress at the local diner, and trying to smother my ardor for a certain human sheriff, I’m thinking life might be easier if I packed up my daughter and caught the next train to Transylvania, leaving Windy Ridge far, far behind.

2023 bk 95. I had a hard time categorizing this book into a single genre. Then again, I really wanted to like the characters, but I had to work too hard. The premise was interesting, but the main character was a little too whiny and too quick to reveal the town's secrets and I wasn't really sure what the main plot line was (main character gets the guy, her daughter gets the guy, they find Slim Jim, they find out the cause of the red mist, just not sure). I may go back and revisit it when I'm in a different mood and havn't just finished a really excellent paranormal series before starting it.

Windy Ridge was your normal little town in the middle of the Ozarks until the day the red fog rolled in. Humans suddenly became wolfmen, lizardmen, gargoyles, and other supernaturals. For Twila, she became a vampire. She was one of the lucky ones, she could pass for human as long as no one paid attention to the blood in her coffee cup and her aversion to sunlight.

Many townsfolk couldn't handle the change and took off into the woods. Twila and her band of monsters set out to find those that were lost and help to bring them back. For the animals that had to hunted, they did what needed to be done and Twila could feed. She wasn't about to feed from humans - not that there were any in town anyway. With the exception of her daughter Sicily, humans may travel through, but never stayed. That is until the she devil of a Mayor's wife decides to hire a one Sherriff Dean Hawke. Of course he was Twila's first love and twenty three years hasn't dimmed the sparks. The whole vampire and town full of shifters and others is enough to put a crimp in any relationship. Add in a naked pink man with tusks causing havoc in town and her daughter constantly skipping school, and there is enough to keep Twila on her toes.

This is the first book in the Trailer Park Vampire series by J.R Rain and H.P. Mallory. If you are looking for a lighthearted read with fun characters, this is for you. The cast of characters includes Lizardman Ol' Ned, Boone who was cured of cancer, but now has absolutely no hair and tends to stutter, and Wolfman Bud. This trio makes up the core of the monster-hunting crew. They are born and bred in the Ozarks and have the personalities to match. Also part of the crew is Twila's daughter, who at the age of 18 would rather run after monsters than go to high school. She is super smart and most of Twila's angst is worrying about her daughter wasting her potential. Twila has to balance worrying about the town, worrying about her daughter, and now worrying about the complication that the sexy Sheriff brings.
As the first book in a series, it is a good start. I look forward to reading more from this duo.

In the small town of Windy Ridge things have not been the same since the red fog rolled in. Things changed for the residents, once the fog rolled out people well, they were changed into wolfmen, lizard people and other things that could be part of your nightmares. They keep to themselves and run the town like normal until the day two humans come to town, sheriff Dean Hawke, Twila's ex-boyfriend, who is trying to figure out who the naked man is that is terrorizing local people. Will Twila keep the specialness of the locals a secret and will she be able to keep her ex from finding out she is a vampire.

Ok let's talk about these fabulous characters. Twila is one of them, just a woman working hard to raise her daughter and have a good life. There is just one thing different with Twila, she is a vampire and a guardian of the town. Dean is the ex-boyfriend and the new sheriff. He is tall and swoon worthy, and kind of broody. They are the perfect pair, but they don't really see it. There is a mystery to solve, and they are the two to do it. I can't believe how much fun all these characters are. so many to mention but we do get to see them all throughout the book. Each character is written with a great deal of care. You will fall in love with all of them.

This is the first book in a new series, and I couldn't wait to dive into it. I couldn't put it down the story is just fun, and the characters are so well written. I honestly don't know what goes through these two authors minds when they sit down to write but keep it up. The stories they come up with have such vivid stories and characters you can't help but get attached and wanting more. So, if you want a good new fun series check it out, you will be laughing all the way through the book.

Excellent start to a new supernatural series.

This is the first book in a new PNR series set in the small town of Windy Ridge, the middle of nowhere, USA. What an excellent start to this new series. I raced through it. This is quite unlike anything I’ve read from HP Mallory and JR Rain. So far, it reminds me a little bit of the Midnight Texas series by Charlaine Harris.

Windy Ridge was your average small town with its fair share of ordinary people living ordinary lives. At least it was, until the day that the mysterious red mist rolled in. The town and its inhabitants haven’t been the same since. Half of them lost their minds and disappeared into the woods, never to return. The other half tried the best they could to get on with their new life.

Now a town full of supernaturals and strange creatures, many of whom no longer look human, Windy Ridge has cut itself off from the rest of the world. The residents of this not so ordinary town are just trying to get by without the attention of outsiders, who might just want to put them on a slab while they poke and prod and investigate. It all works beautifully for a year until the day two ordinary humans walk into their midst in the shape of a new sheriff and his nephew. It seems they are here to stay but can they be trusted to keep the town’s secret and keep the townsfolk safe from the outside world?

I couldn't finish it.

I'm trying to not be hateful...but its obvious this person has never actually spoken to anyone outside her own box. While I can see the story is trying to portray country folk, it doesn't. Almost all of the secondary characters appear to be morons...and its very noticeable by the way the FMC addresses them, with complete disdain and/ or disgust for their appearance or what they've said. The characters are sketchy, not well described, in their human or animal form and there are just too many holes throughout the story itself. Ex. She is a vamp, the Prettiest, strongest, smartest person in town. Yet she depends on the hillbilly boys that help her hunt for her blood. But then she says she hasn't gone to the last 3 hunts. She constantly expresses worry about her child's schooling, grades etc., but in the next paragraph the "child" has been in high school for 3.5 yrs with perfect grades. Ummm. One of the secondary characters is missing his best friend, who disappeared after the change...but when they find him, he's reintroduced as someone he barely knew. one minute she's speaking normally, the next its backwoods wanna be. There's not really any flow here. I like a well written book with detailed, flush characters, this just isn't one.

When the red fog rolled in, everything and EVERYONE changed at Rivers Edge! And then, when a new sheriff comes to town, things REALLY get interesting! Brilliant, different and delightful, “Shotguns and Shifters” is a stunning, imaginative delight! I loved the characters, so BRILLIANTLY created, detailed, and described. I can’t even begin to go into detail for fear of giving up spoilers! Just know my jaw dropped and my amusement knew no bounds! The plot is equally imaginative, and so beautifully executed that I had no trouble keeping up! The dialogue is pure creative genius and had me in stitches! The narration that brings this story, and these characters to life is astounding, perfectly complimenting both the characters, and the storyline! This entire presentation is absolutely incredible! I loved everything about this fabulous series starter and … I … want … more! Five incredible stars! Don’t pass this one by!

After a strange red fog covers everything within a hundred miles of the small town of Windy Ridge in the Ozarks, it leaves all the residents changed into an odd assortment of supernaturals depending how they were previously. Twila Boseman is a single mom and waitress at the Damnation Diner, now she’s a vampire. Her daughter Cicily was away that day and is one of the few unaffected.

Some of the humans didn’t take to the change very well, plus all the domesticated and wild animals were also affected. Being one of the strongest, Twila is on the team to hunt them down. Then two strangers come to town and one turns out to be an old flame.

Dean Hawke is half Osage American. Due to family conflicts, he left the reservation right after HS graduation and hadn’t been heard from since. Now he’s back as the newly hired sheriff of the town.

Fave scenes: the lack of fresh orange juice, Twila describing the attack to Dorcas, the race and the major trying to arrest Twila.

Shotguns and Shifters is the first book in a new series by H.P. Mallory and J.R. Rain. Filled with shifters who were recently turned due to a strange red fog, this book is fun, exciting, and completely engaging. Each character we meet in this book is a different type of shifter, some able to “look” human, others not so much.

The town of Windy Ridge may have changed a year ago but over the course of time, the residents have settled into some sort of abnormal normal. Until a very human sheriff and his nephew stroll into town. Not just any normal human sheriff either. Main character Twila’s former flame.

I wasn’t sure about Shotguns and Shifters at first, but I grew to enjoy this story. The characters are fun and interesting. The setting is enjoyably and described well, making it easy to picture each scene. I look forward to the next book.

I was pulled in from the very start and could not have escaped if I wanted to...which I did NOT! A wonderfully amazing take on changes and how we all have to adapt. The characters are so easy to identify with in one way or another. Twists, turns and a truly fun take on the paranormal I have never experienced anywhere before! I could NOT put this book down for a moment and felt a true loss when it was over. Thank goodness it is part of a series that I am going to dive into head first! Do yourself a favor and pick up this book!

This was an essentially fun read, but there was a lot of babbling. Also, I wish that people who write about hillbillies would spend a little time in the company of Appalachian people. Their way of speaking is quite lovely when it chooses to be and very funny. This felt like a suburban housewife trying to blend with country folk, but she's too self centered to get anything right.

I'm intrigued with the storyline of a fog like substance going through a community and leaving residents with supernatural powers and abilities. The change was not as kind to some as others. The characters are flawed and interesting. A great start to a new series!

The book was kind of interesting. I read the whole thing didn’t skip any. Thought it would be a little different than what it is. I’m not really sure how I feel about this book.

Actually pretty good. There seems to be a certain sameness to this type of book. So, for me, the main characters and surrounding have to be really appealing for a series to stand out. For at least one book, the authors managed it.

I read the whole bundle.
And the idea and characters were interesting, but I missed an overall goal of the book. A reason for why I have read this?
The first book was ok, but the series declined in reasoning and world building. So I wasn’t able to give it more than two stars in the end.
