Souza Cartel #1

Hostile Heir: Tomás & Carina Duet

Rate this book
Once upon a time he set me free. This time it won't be that simple.

I can't stop wondering why the cartel heir with mafia blood in his cold veins saved me all those weeks ago. The young virginal misfit who was kidnapped and gifted to a villainous kingpin.

But he did.

And I was wrong to think he was my hero.

I never expected to meet Tomás Souza again. Or that I'd be covered in his father's blood. However, fate has brought me face to face with a vengeful monster who's blinded by wrath.

Now, I'm his captive while he claims a merciless throne—and my innocence.

Except he underestimates me. They all do.

No matter the bond we share, our agreement must end, especially when the newly crowned king has a heart-shattering secret.

Author Note: Hostile Heir is a duet within the Hostile Kingdom World. There is a HEA in the second book, Hostile King. It's a forced proximity dark romance that includes scenarios and references which may act as a trigger to some readers.

I'm really concerned about the whole"I'm gonna fuck you anytime I want and u are just a fuck toy for me with just sexual attraction".
I went feral when the H was like ooo she looks so fucking sexy and fuckable after she just got sexually assaulted by his own men. I'm like hello fuckboi and the greatest douchebag.

Maybe it's just me but the fact that she was just 19 n all this events are going on just disturbed me a lot. That's my own opinion tho.

The most important question "Am I going to read the sequel?" And the answer to that is A BIG FUCKING NO.

★ “When there is darkness, the light will always shine.” ★

—>>> Thank you for the link in the ebook for Hostile Heart, which was a prequel giving insight into Carina’s first run-in with the eldest Souza son. The sparks are already flying between her and Tomás, because the circumstances which bring them together are clouded in suspicion, no matter how she makes him feel while at his mercy. So when their paths cross again in Bogatá, and quite eventfully at that, the lenience she had experienced firsthand ceased to further exist for her. SO looking forward to the second part of this duet! (And I hope that the Irish side of the family gets their story told as well)!

The only reason I'm not giving a 1 star was because I enjoyed until about 200 pages in. After that, everything got repetitive. This wasn't a romance. Romance is more than lust and sex. That's all Carina and Tomas' relationship was. At first, it's fine because the author is still building up the couple. However, with how long this book was, there should have been more development with their relationship. Something past sex. Besides the beginning, I didnt like this book. I don't think I'll be reading the rest of the duet or series. The cliffhanger isn't enough for me to continue at this time.

Getting kidnapped? Bad day. Getting drugged and gifted to an unhinged cartel boss? Really bad day. Said cartel boss thinks you’re an assassin and wants to shoot and feed you to his tigers? Nightmare! Being saved by the eldest son of said cartel boss? Dream come true! Saying Hostile Heir is a page turner is an understatement. You just can’t help but sympathize with poor Carina. She really does have the worst luck, but every cloud has a silver lining. Or evil just has a pretty face. I’ll let you choose.

Edge of your seat worthy! I couldn’t help but think what could possibly happen next!? And then more craziness ensues! When you think about fate bringing two people together, Tomas and Carina will definitely come to mind first. Two people with their own darkness, shine brightly only when together. It’s sweet and romantic in the most unlikeliest of ways, to my demented liking. Not the type of conventional sweet and romantic. Surrounded by paranoia, death, and gore, their story is very unconventional. But that’s what makes it so good!

Spice level (1-5): 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Kink level (1-3): ⛓️ Spitting, spanking, D/s-esque

When Tomas saves Carina from his father’s paranoid wrath, it’s the beginning of their tumultuous love affair. They just don’t know it yet. Carina managed to escape sudden death, only to be thrown in the lion’s den. In this case, tiger’s den. Tomas is disciplined. He will do anything for his family and burn the rest of the world for good measure. He barely gives her a second glance. But he saved her. Defied his father’s order for her. A nobody, a potential spy or assassin. Tomas is no saint. He is ruthless and methodical, but when Carina is involved he is impulsive and possessive. He has his own dark past and is also a bit unhinged. Carina’s only chance to make it out of there alive is to convince Tomas she is not a threat, but at what cost? All she has of value is her innocence. But to a cartel heir who has everything and can have anyone, is that even worth anything?

I’d recommend Hostile Heir to any fan of mafia/cartel unconventional love stories. This book does contain unaliving, past trauma, attempted S-assault, talks about selling/distributing drugs, kidnapping, off page drugging, references to past suicide attempts/self harm, off page beating of a woman. Know your triggers. Always read the Trigger Warnings if you have some. If you love a damaged MMC in power, with an innocent yet feisty FMC, Hostile Heir is right up your alley!

Warning: Reading this book may make you speak with a Latin accent. May make you want the finer things in life. May make you want to feed a dog Frosted Flakes. May make you crave a tamale randomly. May make you realize you didn’t fall in love, you tripped. May make you question your current relationship. May make you have an if-he-doesn’t-get-between-me-and-a-tiger-I-don’t-want-him type of attitude. May make you want to buy a clingy gold dress. May make you hope you get kidnapped and be gifted to a crazy cartel leader, only to be ravished by his eldest son. May make you think twice about saving someone’s life. May make you hope, they will save yours. Read responsibly.

This was an ok read. It kept my attention and I kept reading, but there were a few things that annoyed me. I've said it before, I'll say it again, and you better believe I'll feel it's necessary in my future reviews to reiterate that it's much easier for me to focus on what I don't like about a book rather than what I do.
I'm not sure if this author's writing style is for me. There's a lot of uncommon word usage that truly disrupts the flow of the story and they're not always used correctly, unfortunately. I'm sure this particular example doesn't bother most readers, but given my medical background, it irked my last nerve when she kept referring to blood as 'plasma'. Plasma is apart of blood, as well as red and white blood cells and platelets, but it's incorrect to refer to blood as plasma. I realize this may seem trivial to some, and it wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't done it SOOO much.
There was also a ton of inner monologue that seemed to serve no purpose in progressing the story and the story crawled at a snail's pace. I mean, this was a relatively LONG book at 506 pages, especially for it to be the first installment of a duet. And nothing really happened. The ending felt strange and did not flow well with the rest of the story either. I've already started reading other books and if I circle back around to continue this one, it will probably be a while from now that I do so.

Hostile Heir is a fantastic dark mafia read! It is fast paced with a ton of drama, suspense, danger and twists and turns. Carina and Tomas had amazing chemistry. The flow of the story was great and I loved the intensity of their love-hate relationship. This is such a good read and after that cliffhanger I can't wait to see how this duet ends!

4.50 Carina is a character from the Jungle Oasis, (Sal's sister) series. It looks as though the second book might include characters from that series. It's a great series to read prior to this one if you haven't read it yet...I highly recommend it.

I love this author because she knows how to take her well crafted words and provide the reader with a deep dive into her main characters; their thoughts, actions, fears and desires. She has no problem with exposing the good, bad and the ugly in her books and she doesn't try to sugarcoat her damaged characters. She takes damaged MC's and crafts a story that is wicked and tantalizing but also heart-wrenching. Her stories are unique in their delivery even when dealing with subject matter that has been overly written in this genre

Carina and Tomas' story in book one is a convoluted well told story that takes the reader on a battery of emotions: death, love, hate, bloodlust, kidnapping, threats of bodily harm to not only Carina but her family, forced sex, lust and attraction; while taking place in the Souza Cartel. It's a roller coaster ride of emotions, with dark dirty sex, demoralizing treatment and words designed to break a 19 year old's' girls' resistance/will, but not to completely put out her light. Tomas thanklessly takes her virginity with rough, hard sex only to feel remorse for his actions but then morphs into the hard dark man he is. Carina is a young girl scarred from an ugly past and Tomas is a man that holds onto his mental health by a string.

As with other books' by Ms. Archer this story is filled with dark and dirty sex as well as beautiful moments where tenderness and love win out over the demons both characters are fighting. I loved Carina's character until the end of the book whereas her "immaturity" rose to the surface throwing her into a sea infested with evil calculating men that want to destroy the Souza Cartel. I didn't think she would buy Paco's story, but sadly she did. She wasn't your normal 19 year old H, (thank goodness) but had to face things about herself in book one that Tomas brought to light. Her character until books' end held her own while swimming with the sharks. Tomas blindly brought her into his depraved world by bringing her to his fathers' funeral and his congratulatory celebration while being named the new leader of the Souza Cartel. It's obvious by books' end that he loves her and she him, but he blindly puts her life in danger. He parades her around his enemies, accidentally shows his feelings for her making her the perfect victim to be used in his enemies' quest to kill him and take over the Cartel. The book ends with her missing and Tomas being set up to believe she is his enemy.

The book is definitely a 5 but took .50 off due to the ending in book one and the fact that Tomas's character throughout the book was like watching a man who changed personalities to fit the people or room he was in. He was a master at going from one personality to the next using various masks to conceal his real emotions.

Looking forward to book 2.

Hostile Heir is the first in a dark contemporary mafia romance duet brimming with action, danger, high steam, twists and turns. I recommend starting with the prequel novella, Hostile Heart, prior to reading Hostile Heir. At the time of writing this review, the novella is available on the author’s website for download. This book does end on a cliffhanger but the second and final book should be released early next year.

Tomás Souza is the ruthless heir to the Souza family cartel. He is a calculating and twisted mastermind with darkness seeping from his soul that he refers to as his glitch. He once saved the innocent Carina Ferreira, but is not Prince Charming, and he won’t give her a second chance at freedom without earning it. He uses Carina as a pawn in his game of chess.

“When I’m done with you, and only then, will you be permitted to walk free.”

Carina and Tomás have scorching hot chemistry. The tense enemies-to-lovers vibe is done very well and the steam is off-the-charts. I loved and hated Tomás so much for how he treated Carina. He held her captive, forced her into an arrangement, put her in extreme danger from his enemies, and sometimes I felt like he went overboard trying to dominate her. Don’t get me wrong — this is a perfect book for readers that love dark and twisted love. I guess I was just hoping for a little more sweetness.

I’m excited for the final installment and am looking forward to Carina becoming a true queen!

Tropes: Mafia romance, dark romance, cartel romance, captive romance, forced proximity, age-gap, virgin heroine
Heat: 4/5
TW: Please read trigger warnings as this book definitely has many scenes that could be triggering.

Hostile Heir is a duet within the Hostile Kingdom World. It's a forced proximity dark romance, enemies-to-lovers, hate-to-love, lies, cartel villain romance, secrets, deception, betrayal, enemies, suspense, drama, danger, violence, hatred, resentment, anger, action, attack, murder, bloodshed, violence, assassin, revelations, misunderstandings, captivity, age gap trope, mafia romance, taboo, chaos, surprises, steam, lust, darkness, passion, pawn, power, control, emotions, tensions, twists and turns trust issues, torture, torment, heartaches and so much more. The story is beautifully written with wounded characters and complex storyline that captures your attention from the first chapter and keeps you hooked and and the edge your seat all the way until the mind-blowing cliffhanger.
This is a fast paced and compelling. Carina was gifted to the monstrous and villainous kinpin Tomas with the mafia blood in his cold veins. She once thought that he was her hero when he saved her from her kidnappers but oh how wrong was she. She was even more shocked to meet him again and this time he kept prisoner when he found her with his dad blood on her hands. He decided to keep her close, but there's a lot of distrust. He's blinded by rage. Tomas was wounded and broken and he senses a brokenness in her as well so he stole her innocence use her for his gain. There's was so much push and pull between these two and distrust. I'm going to leave you here.

"Hostile Heir" by Autumn Archer delivers a classic dark mafia romance with the hallmark elements that fans love—forced proximity, high-stakes power plays, and sizzling enemies-to-lovers tension. The gritty cartel setting and the central duo, Carina and Tomás, provide plenty of thrills: from kidnapping scenes and cartel drama, to moments of raw chemistry and emotional upheaval. However, while the book maintains a pulse of suspense, it falters in pacing. At over 500 pages, the story often drags, with lengthy inner monologues and repeated phrasing that slow the momentum. Additionally, some readers—especially those with medical knowledge—might find the frequent misuse of terms like "plasma" for blood jarring and distracting from the narrative. Beyond dialogue clichés and occasional word usage missteps, the relationship leans heavily on physical attraction and power dynamics, with limited development of emotional intimacy. There's a lot of lust and danger, but little evolution beyond initial tension.

If you're a dark romance enthusiast who enjoys brooding alpha heroes, vengeance-fueled plots, and intense chemistry, Hostile Heir is a compelling, binge-worthy read. But those seeking deeper character growth, more nuanced relationships, or a faster pace may feel this one falls short. It has strong moments—but it could have been so much stronger.

Holy Smokes! What a gripping and addictive ride this was! Hostile Heir is one of those books you know the moment you start you won't be stopping until you've reached the very last word. So yes I absolutely devoured this in one sitting...
This is Carina and Tomas's story. And.... God I'm obsessed with these two, the dynamic they share, and the journey they go through. Their chemistry is sizzling hot, the conflicted emotions they feel and friction between them hits all of the emotions, and the the plot is action-packed and suspenseful. And.... Is it hate between them? ooorrrr simply a form of foreplay?
Tomas our hero is EVERYTHING!! This brutal man has so many layers and few he only shows to certain individuals. And.... Those few *moments* he shared with Carina.. Stop!.... Cue all the swoon. Carina our heroine I adored. She may be on the younger side but I loved that she had a backbone and could fire off the sass when required. The plot/storyline continues to build and after that cliffy ending I shall be here waiting desperately for Book 2.
The journey for these two have just begun and I can not wait to see where it leads me. I Highly Recommend this dark and gripping mafia tale from Autumn Archer. Bring on Book 2!

Well that was intense!
Carina has escaped them once already but on one fateful night she inadvertently finds herself caught in the crossfire of the Souza Cartel and one of their many enemies.
Bloodshed, tears, anger, dominance bullets, steam….it’s all in this story and wow what a ride!
Poor Carina doesn’t stand a chance against the power of the king of the cartel…..but maybe she isn’t as helpless as she thinks….perhaps the power is hers to hold….
Tomas is a powerful man with multiple layers….but those fleeting moments when he was helpless to control his emotions with Carina….how he completely blindsided even himself….. were just perfect!
This story is intense and harsh in places. I sometimes found myself a little bogged down in the narrative, with a lot of inner dialogue and some lengthy descriptive sections……but then the chemistry just burns the pages….absolutely steaming hot and addictive!!!!
I can’t wait to get back and see how Carina deals with that well placed cliffhanger….where does her trust and belief lie….
Some great stories to come from these intriguing Souza brothers…..

DAMN!! Hostile Heir was dark, gritty, intense, action-packed, emotional and deliciously sexy. I was glued to the pages with my heart beating out of my chest. The intensity of the story was adrenaline inducing and nail biting. Definitely one hell of a bumpy rollercoaster ride from start to finish. And then the ending – WOW – I need more!!!

Carina and Tomás don’t have a great start to their relationship as Tomás is ruthless and will use Carina anyway he chooses. But the chemistry between them was so fiery hot that it oozed off the pages and definitely had my lady parts aching for more.

The whirlwind of emotional turmoil and crazy twists and turns throughout had me questioning what was going to happen next. The story had me raging at times and hating what Tomás does to Carina. But I could slowly see the way that she softens him slightly and I just know that these two would eventually work through their toxicity to be something more.

I can’t wait for the conclusion of their journey to see if there is some sort of happy ever after for these two.

Loved it, now bring on the rest!

I would recommend that you should read the prequel, Hostile Heart for maximum understanding of the beginning of the relationship between Carina and Tomas. This a compelling dark, brutal cartel romance with intense attraction under extreme and hostile circumstances. Tomas is the Souza cartel heir and Carina has been kidnaped and delivered as a gift to Tomas’ father. Although they meet after a dangerous and deadly event, Tomas realizes that Carina is special and that she has the ability to settle the chaos inside of him. They begin to develop a relationship despite the dangerous world they live in. Every action packed, suspenseful and brutal encounter between them leads them to the development of feelings, until seeds of doubt and conspiracies theories are sown which leads to wrenching cliffhanger. I absolutely loved this deliciously dark, page turning, hot and steamy story. I am anxiously waiting for the continuation of Tomas and Carina’s story in Brutal King. I hope that there will be more stories about Tomas’ family in the Hostile World Series. I received a free copy of this book via Book sprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Spoilers below.

I'm so glad that I drove right into this book. I enjoyed Tomas's use of regional tigers in obtaining truth from potential enemies. I loved that Carina is the key to Tomas not losing himself to his personal demons when his hands are covered in blood. How she brought Tomas back to himself the first time, in his bathroom was really hot. Their chemistry and sexual attraction was very well portrayed. The author conveys the small details that enhance the story, the physical descriptions of the characters and their specific habits. I'm so rooting for Tomas to get over his fear of Carina being seen as a weakness and bring her into his mafia infused family and at his side. His struggle with duty and his responsibilities to his familia vs. listening to his heart, it's a completely new concept for him to consider. Now that Carina knows about his upcoming marriage that Tomas completely omitted, I can see her running and possibly being captured in the duet.

An excellent read. It ticks off all the boxes of a twisted mafia romance. The feelings and emotions are realistic. The characters are believable and intriguing. There is plenty of action and drama. The only drawback I had was with Carina. She was difficult for me to like. It was a turnoff how belligerent and defiant she was. I also did not like that she kept lying to herself and Tomas about her true feelings. However, she has never had a love interest before. Tomas is her first kiss, her first everything. After considering her age of nineteen, I realize how inexperienced and naive she is about life and about men. That in itself helped to redeem her in my eyes. I look forward to the next book. This is a must read and I highly recommend it.

This was a 4.5⭐️ read

I have been wanting Carinas story since reading about her in Vengeful Captor and let me say Autumn did not disappoint.

A while ago Tomás protected Carina from his father, but now the tables have turned and this time she is his captive. He has his plans for her... but she is definitely not going to play by his rules.

This story is fierce, savage, but also impassioned. It is extremely well written with great character development. The chemistry between Tomás and Carina runs red hot!

This is only part one of a duet so prepare for the inevitable cliffhanger, and boy is it a big one. Where will Carinas trust lie?

This book has it all... danger, intrigue, suspense and romance. A little bit wordy in some sections but overall I loved it.

Cannot wait for book 2

Oh, boy. Who’s the pawn? Which feelings are true? Who’s lying? Is there a future? Heck, which truths are really true? Carina wasn’t expecting this to become her life. Even for a short while. And yet, here she is. In real danger of for a man who will never love her back. Or keep her. Or even want her for more than a few days. And yet she still tries to be the salve to his torment. But maybe she’s not just a pawn. I’m sort of hoping that we’ll find that she’s truly the queen when all is said and done. But Tomas has secrets and plenty of lies. The real wonder is if he’ll go through with the plans made before today, or if he’ll burn it all to a crisp just to save the one person who doesn’t seem afraid of his shadows. I need to know if he’s going to break Carina’s heart or maybe someone’s body for trying to deceive him.

This is book one of the Hostile duet. In order to understand more about how the characters Tomas and Carina meet, I would advise reading the Hostile Heart first. Carina is young but for someone her age she has suffered more than most 19 yr old, she is finding her way in the world but has demons. One demon in particular is Tomas, although he’s mafia he also has been through a lot in his life. Carina is his calmness in a Hostile world. Their chemistry is scorching hot, neither want to admit to their feelings as it’s dangerous for both of them in different ways. This book has drama, very dark romance, very steamy encounters, trust issues and so many twists and turns you’ll get whiplash! . Ends on a cliffhanger and there’s a bit of a wait for book two but so worth it. I am captivated by these characters and Miss Archers style of writing. On a side note I need to get me some Tequila 😜

This dark romance has you entranced from the very first page, but to get the extra effect and the best out of this you need to read the novella Hostile Heart prior to diving in. Tomas's character is one that has you falling deep into the darkness with him. He brings out the darkness in Carina that she doesn't expect and she struggles to accept this side of her. Their story is packed with every emotion possible and will have you on the edge of your seat. A story filled with lies, secrets and a plan that may or may not be left to play out. The chemistry between these two is scorching hot and the tension has you at times holding your breath and your heart racing. This story will have your head reeling as Carina appears to be a pawn in Tomas's game. Be prepared to be left hanging and eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this addictive duet.

Uh yeah, when i tell you i L O V E D this book, i mean it. autumn archer has a really beautiful gift when it comes to her writing and storytelling, sucking in her reader with descriptions and scenarios that i could envision so perfectly, i almost felt as though i was actually there in the flesh. the story itself was suspenseful, keeping me on my toes and having me really question what would happen next. Even though it ends on a cliffhanger, the second book is JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST! and the SPICE🥵 seriously, the chemistry between Carina + Tomás was INSANE🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. i’m not usually crazy about the whole “insta-love” thing but autumn’s talent actually made me tolerate and ENJOY it. it’s definitely DARK so check your triggers, but it’s totally worth a read!

if you like steaming H O T🔥 suspenseful romance, i highly suggest this book.

After his father's death, Tomas and Carina cross paths again. He won't let her go this time. He has a really dark side; to their surprise, she likes it rough as much as he does. She's far too innocent for his violent life, and he's to marry someone else. But she'll be his prisoner/guest for a few days. They have explosive chemistry. Carina always submits to Tomas - eventually - but she pushes at every opportunity. Tomas is not my cup of tea, but there's something wickedly sexy about him. This is the first of a duet, and there's something huge brewing at the end of this book. I'm not usually a fan of the cliffhanger, but I trust this author to bring an ending worthy of Tomas and Carina. Dark and Intense

We finally get the first book to the long awaited Souza Cartel. Reading the prequel isn't required but it does give you a better understanding of the characters of Tomas and Carina. Hostel Heir is a fantastic dark mafia read. With suspense, angst, action, heat, and one h€ll of a cliffhanger. Carina thought she would never see Tomas again but unfortunately she once again crossed his path. This time with the bl○○d of his father on her hands, Carina was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Tomas is engaged to another but Carina has gotten under his skin. Will the few days he's managed to "negotiate" with her be enough? What will happen once Carina finds out Tomas is engaged? I cannot wait to see what will happen next.

Review

This is my first Autumn Archer book and it most definitely will not be my last. She writes an intensely fast paced forced proximity dark romance packed full of twists, betrayals, secrets and lies and a whole bunch more.

This is Tomas and Carina’s rollercoaster ride of a story. These two both have experienced great trauma in their lives. Carina has faced so much and has not let it break her. When she is found covered in his fathers blood she finds herself once again a prisoner. But the connection and chemistry between these two changes circumstances. Their story is dark and intense and an absolute must read.

Seriously can’t wait to read more of Autumn Archers books. This was a fantastic read and I highly recommend it!!
