This was a pleasant surprise! I did not expect to like this story so much. Madalyn George's debut novel, well, novella, was very well done. President's-secret-boyfriend... Is that a trope? 😁 And MMM to boot! I liked it. A lot.

The story takes place on election night with flashbacks filling in the backstories of our three MCs - President Laurence, Chief of Staff Kent, and Secret Service Agent Raymond. Laurence and Kent are BFFs who met in their first year at uni and sacrificed everything, including staying firmly in the closet for 25 years in order to get Laurence into the White House. Both men seem to have given up on ever sharing their feelings for each other. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Raymond and Laurence... and... Raymond and Kent - separately! You've read the blurb so you know they're all going to come together. (Okay. Bad pun. Couldn't help myself. 🤪) You're reading this book because you want to know how that happens. It helps that these three are older, mature, and (eventually) willing to communicate like adults. They discuss the rules for the relationship (like, can two of them have sex if one of the throuple is not present, etc.) There's no jealousy, no third wheel, no power imbalance. That is essential to an MMM plot, IMO.

There were some gaps I wish Madalyn George had filled. Since this story takes place on election night of President Laurence's second term, we get a (very) hazy view of how they handled their relationship for the next four years - written as a flashback in the epilogue. But there are no details about how the kept their relationship under wraps. Wouldn't that make for an interesting second book?!?

If you liked Secret Service and Enemies of the State by Tal Bauer, you'll probably enjoy Election Night.

4 stars! I look forward to reading more by Madalyn George.

Excuse me but why was this not longer 😭😭 After reading Secret Service by Tal Bauer I wished for a 3rd to join a relationship like this. Short and sweet. I do wish it was more show than tell. Everything was summarized with their years together and past events. We rarely had present moments or actual conversations. Overall a cute short read.

Read it in one sitting (staying up too late) so an automatic four stars.
I loved this. Granted, I love the trope. The president's-secret-boyfriend(s) has everything you need for a great story.
Menage not so much, and that one has got to be really hard to pull off, especially for a first-time novelist. But George had me kinda-sorta-mostly buying into and enjoying it here.
But three closeted men Finally finding love in the face of massive obstacles? Lots of feelz.
Delighted to find a new novelist who can write on this level. Hope she publishes again soon and often.

We have Laurence, Kent, and Raymond.

Kent has been in love with Laurence all his life almost 25 years of his life but he had to hold back because Laurence was going for presidency.

This book, this MMM book… the emotional depth in it was so good. You could feel the emotions pouring from Kent. Even when Raymond started having feelings for Kent and the president, Laurence, he was holding back because clearly he couldn’t do anything about it, and he didn’t know how to even go about it.

But when Kent and Raymond started hooking up, you could still feel that they really cared about each other. The way Raymond called Kent baby, the sweetness, the softness between them it was so soft and warm. They were so soft with each other, and I loved it.

And when Laurence became part of the picture I love that they discussed first. They talked about it. They opened up to each other about what they wanted, how they felt before anything physical even happened.

Yeah, this was a very short novella, but this novella was good. The emotional depth that was added was perfect.

Oh wow! All the feels!!! I was so very pleased that the poly relationship was treated as mutual love for all—that instead of jealousy, one of them seeing the other two together and happy just brings more love and happiness. The pining was great—gahhhhh! Sometimes I'd wonder if the structure of the story was the right presentation of things, but it didn't really affect my enjoyment of the novella because the pining and the relationship feels were so good!!

Excellent debut

Madalyn George is off to an excellent start with her debut novel. The story essentially takes place over one night. We get all the background information on Kent, Laurence, and Raymond in flashbacks and memories. Kent and Laurence became best friends on their first day in college and knew right then that Laurence was destined for the White House. Twenty-five (or twenty-seven? there was some discrepancy with this info) years later, it's election night and President Laurence is up for his second term. Tensions run high as Laurence and his Chief of Staff Kent await the results. Secret Service Agent Raymond's shift is over but he can't help but see how Kent and Laurence are doing. This was a fascinating story about staying in the closet and unrequited love. I'm looking forward to seeing future books from this author.

Not sure what I was expecting but I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. POTUS, the Chief of Staff, and a Secret Service Agent? Yes, please!

Kent is the Chief of Staff and his best friend (and long time crush) is the President of the United States. A good portion of this book is flash backs, as long as you remember what is happening in the present, you should be fine.

It’s (re) election night and Kent is reminiscing about when he and Laurence (POTUS) were in college and Laurence pretty much insinuated that Kent stay in the closet because it was the only way they could make their dreams of being in the White House a reality. Laurence dated Regina and they eventually got married. Kent put everything on hold and while he longed for his friend, he envied the First Lady.

Kent and Laurence have a conversation that gets misunderstood and Kent storms out of the oval office and is followed by Ray, the Secret Service Agent that he had been secretly intimate with for a while. Ray is an excellent agent and he doesn’t miss the longing between Laurence and Kent but he can’t really do anything about it. All three men have envisioned being with the other two and on (re)election night, those fantasies are made into a reality.

After that night, the story jumps ahead 3 1/2 years and we get to see how the men agree to give themselves a chance at a relationship and how they plan their HEA

*****
POV… multi first person

Standalone or series… standalone novella

Hangover… slight

Recommend… yes

2 men meet in college, knowing one will become the President

This is a long-term, withheld romance told in a novella that explores a three-way relationship. Madalyn George continues the story of men with repressed feelings striving to achieve other goals. Both enter college simultaneously, with Kent aware that Laurence aims to be President. Laurence understands that any sexual scandal could jeopardize that ambition. For 27 years, they resist the attraction between them, with Kent serving as Laurence's chief of staff, while Laurence is re-elected to a second term in office.

Enter Raymond, a senior Secret Service agent who has also been in the closet but awakens desire in Kent. On election night for the second term, they finally act on their long-repressed feelings.

There are explicit encounters between them, and the President learns of it and encourages their relationship. What happens next is a spoiler but brings satisfying closure to the story.

Madalyn George packs a lot into 124 pages, filled with vivid events and thoughtful character development. The reader can feel the characters' angst and desires. The burdens of the presidency are depicted, along with tantalizing glimpses of what occurs behind closed doors in the White House.

This is a wonderful follow-up to "Monumental Love," also by Madalyn George, taking place over a much shorter timeframe.

A poly-amorous romance between Laurence, the President of the United States, his best friend since college and Chief of Staff, Kent, and Secret Service Agent tasked with protecting the president, Raymond. Too much internal monologuing took all the excitement out of the story about two closeted best friends secretly pining for each other for 25 years and a hunk of a man who finds himself in the middle. Interesting premise but the execution didn't work for me at all, instead of enjoying the final threesome scene I was counting the pages until I could be done with it.

This was the second story that I've read (today) by this relatively new author and I have to say that their other story Monumental Love, which I couldn't find listed on Goodreads but is currently free as a part of MM Classs 22/23 Giveaway on ProlificWorks, with similar theme of best friends who meet in college and share an interest in politics, was a bit more enjoyable for me.

Themes: multiple POV, best friends to lovers, closeted characters, politics, polyamory

This new author did a good job in creating a good mmm story about men willing to stay quiet to be succesfull in politics and be close to the one they love. After years of not acting on feelings Laurence and Kent finally get together. With Raymond as their third, who already has a 'thing' with Kent and to whom Laurence also felt ttracted years ago.
