International Player is my first Louise Bay book, and I enjoyed it a lot! A great friends to lovers/slow burn romance. I listened to the audio book and it was narrated by one of my favorites, Shane East, as well as Saskia Maarleveld. They both did a nice job, the accents were great.

Truly and Noah have been friends since her sister and his best friend got married. Over time, they became close, and even though they were both attracted to one another, it stayed mostly platonic. Noah went to America for business and he and Truly sort of lost touch. Now he's back... and he's seeing Truly in a whole new light. One of the best things about this book for me is that he got Truly to see herself in a whole new light, which was so important. Truly knew the things she was good at and took pride in that, but didn't have confidence in much else. Until Noah.

I felt like Truly was a relatable character. I liked the slow and steady pace of the story and how Truly and Noah's relationship blossomed. This story had some laughs, emotion, and steam. Overall, it was a great romance. I'm looking forward to checking out more of this authors books!

Blurb:
Being labelled a player never stopped me from being successful with women. Until I met Truly Harbury.
Truly was the first girl who ever turned me down.
The first female friend I ever had.
And she might just be the first woman I ever fall in love with.
When an emergency means she needs my help running her family’s charity, I’m happy to introduce her to the glitz and glamour of the London business world—taking her to dinners, coaching her through speeches, zipping up the sexy evening gown I helped her pick out.
The more time we spend together, the more I want to convince her I’m not a man to avoid, that we’re not as unsuited as she believes.
She sees herself as the book-reading, science-loving introvert while I’m the dangerous, outgoing, charmer.
She thinks I love parties and people whereas she prefers pajamas and a takeaway.
What she doesn’t realize is that I like everything about her–the way her smile lights up a room, how her curves light up my imagination, and especially the way her lips taste when coated with tequila.
She’s the first woman I ever fell in love with. I just need to know if she could ever love me too.

You take the good with the bad...

I find when I'm reading or listening to a story from Louise Bay that I'm going to hate the hero for a while. Look, I don't expect perfection from my heroes, but, I also struggle to see him be imperfect. I don't want to see him scoffing at happy relationships. I don't want to hear him talking about going back to his unemotional hook-ups like it's a foregone conclusion. I guess I'm just hard to please. In this case, it was simply that Noah took too long to realise that he wanted a relationship with Truly. Even after he realised he wanted more with Truly he fubbed his approach and waffled through the execution. I was also a little unimpressed with his obliviousness to Truly's feelings when he connected/talked with women he'd previously slept with.

Honestly, I couldn't decide if I liked International Player or not. The characters, storyline and romance were both good and bad. I'd be flying along and loving it...then crash and burn in frustration the next. I didn't particularly like Truly's relationship with her twin sister or her twin sister's relationship with her husband. They all seemed to dislike each other and were together out of obligation instead of love.

The narrators do an OK job. Listening to the male narrator perform the sex scenes was a little awkward and my finger hovered over the volume key because he tended to shout his...ahhh...joy?!?

I'm still a fan of Louise Bay's, but admit to not loving this one.

There are lots of Star Wars references in this so, to quote Luke Skywalker - "What a piece of junk!"

4 stars for the narration but 1 for the story.

*sigh* International Player is another of those books that reminded me why I don’t read or listen to all that many contemporary romances.  The plot is pretty much a repeat of all the books by this and similar authors (you know the ones); predictable, clichéd and revolving around the fact that the leads NEVER HAVE A FUCKING CONVERSATION ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP.  I only picked it up because the narrators are excellent - and they’re the only reason I finished it.

Truly Harbury has had a crush on her brother-in-law’s best friend Noah for years.  They were good mates before he left London to work in New York, but haven’t really kept in touch (which is weird, if they were such great friends) and she doesn’t know he’s back in England until her twin sister Abigail – with whom Truly runs the family’s charitable foundation – tells her.

Noah is, of course, sex-on-a-stick, and Truly keeps telling herself not to let her crush become a ‘thing’. Noah is a player and not at all the settling-down type - but when Abigail has pregnancy complications which mean she’s going to be confined to bed for the next five months, Noah is the ideal solution to the problem of how Truly is going to do all the schmoozing necessary to keep the donations rolling in at the foundation.  She’s very much a back-room girl while Abigail has been the one to do all the presentations and attend all the glitzy parties – Truly is an introvert who has panic attacks at the mere thought of all that.

So Truly and Noah do the Pygmalion thing as he helps her with her presentations and her wardrobe, and it’s all fine until she comes to the conclusion that the only way to tamp down her crush and get Noah out of her system is to – you guessed it – have lots of no-strings sex with him.  Yeah,  because that always works out SO well.  Even though she comes up with a list of rules like “I don’t want to hear about your other women” (he doesn’t have any) and “we only shag by appointment”, which Noah thinks are a bit weird, he’s thinking with his small brain by this point and completely prepared to go with the flow.

But as this goes on, he realises that the friendship side of their relationship – which he’d valued highly – has disappeared, and he can’t work out what’s going on and why Truly is so reluctant to spend any time with him out of bed.  Of course, they don’t TALK about any of this and things come to a head when Truly decides she has to end things because the whole casual sex thing hasn’t worked (what a surprise) and she has to get out before she falls any more deeply in love with him.

I found myself actively disliking her by this point.  She knows Noah has never been one for serious relationships in the past and judges him completely based on that, choosing to ignore the fact that he’s a decent guy with his heart in the right place who obviously cares about her and wants her for more than what happens between them in bed.  She ends things without giving him any say in the matter simply because she’s convinced he’ll get tired of her soon.  Because it’s all about her and her need to protect her heart and sod the guy who’s propped her up for the last five months and who she used to think of as her best friend.

I know International Player isn’t typical of all contemporary romances, but it’s typical of a huge and incredibly popular chunk of the market at the moment.  I have nothing against the sort of fluff this aspires to be, but even fluff needs to be well-written, the characters need to be likeable and their motivations need to make sense – and this just isn’t the case here.  I liked Noah well enough, but Truly was immature and selfish and I just wanted her to go away and for Noah to find someone who could appreciate him.

Thankfully, because this audio is part of the Audible Romance Package, I didnt buy or use a credit on it – if I had, it would be going straight back.  Saskia Maarleveld and Shane East are terrific performers, but even they can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear like this one, and I cringed at some of the dialogue they had to utter.  Kudos to them for being able to do it and not sound as though they had their tongues in their cheeks, but that’s their job and they do it very well.  All the things you’d expect from such experienced performers – pacing, enunciation, characterisation and differentiation – are good, they inject the right amount of expression into their performances, and the love scenes are delivered unselfconsciously and with conviction, but that’s not enough to make for a good listen when those performances are tied to such a weak and uninspiring story.

There are better examples of this type of book out there. Unless you absolutely HAVE to listen to every single thing Shane East and/or Saskia Maarleveld has ever recorded, go and find one of those instead.

Although this is a lovely book, I had a few problems with the characters that held me back from loving it. I didn't like how he treated her anxiety like it was something she chose. I didn't like that he forgot she existed while he was in New York. I mean, they were friends. But he moves to the big city and doesn't give her a second thought? Cold.
Also, she often went overboard on the 'I'm not as beautiful as my twin' stuff. Her lack of even an iota of self confidence until he helped her was a bit over the top. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just my opinion.
But otherwise, its a lovely romance with both characters improving themselves through love.

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

I love me some British accent spoken in a beautiful male voice. Shane West can totally read me bedtime stories. I've listened to other audiobooks narrated by him but it doesn't get old. If there is one thing I found a little out of place (and I can't remember him doing that before) is that he actually shouted during...uh...sexy times. It sounded more like he was in pain than in the throes of pleasure. Other than that he did a wonderful job performing Noah's part.

I'm not a stranger to Saskia Maarleveld's narration either but I have never heard her British accent before. I loved it!

A couple of years ago Noah left London to pursue a career in New York, leaving behind his best friend, Truly. Now, I'm all for following your dreams but how did they just fell out of touch? If my best friend was going away I'd make damn sure to check in, talk on the phone, skype, facetime or even do smoke signals, if necessary. In a time like we live in it's never been easier to stay in touch. Right? I don't mean to make this a huge issue but it did give me pause.

When Noah returns he reconnects with Truly. She's still the same, nerdy, hardworking and still doesn't realize how beautiful she is. Throughout the story Noah tries to build up Truly's self esteem. She has never felt that she stood out, especially compared to her sister. I have to admit that her extremely low opinion of herself started to grate on me and no matter what Noah told her, she never believed that she was worthy of him which was reflected in her inner monologue. Her "woe-is-me" attitude and her opinion of his womanizing ways (which he had left behind at that point) created obstacles which should have been cleared with communication. But they didn't talk, not really.

Noah's player status is being repeated a lot throughout the book. I don't mind if the heroes are manwhores, especially if I see the change which I actually did with this man. There was one situation that made me scratch my head though. They were at a restaurant and Noah was confronted with two of his ex-hookups/girlfriends. He was completely oblivious to Truly's feelings and even had to ask his best friend. It made him look like a bit of a tool to be honest.

Despite all that I found both Truly and especially Noah likable. Noah really gave his feelings consideration. Because he'd never been in love it took him a little to recognize the feeling but when he did he was all in.

I wish I could have loved this one a little more. I was impressed with the author's writing style and while I wasn't on board with the characters' development I was still invested throughout the story and enjoyed this story. I will definitely read another book by Louise Bay.

International Player was such an enjoyable read! I may have a tad weakness for a friends to lovers kind of romance and this book just quenched my thirst for that trope.

4 'Lifetime's challenge' Stars!

A friends to lovers romance with one of Louise's yummy British heroes? Heck yes! I am always in the mood for a dose of Louise Bay's writing. When I want to read a light romance, with a whole lot of British and awesome characters, light drama and a couple with lots of chemistry, I just know this woman will not fail me. She surely did not disappoint with this one!

International Player is a standalone contemporary romance and, get ready guys because it releases tomorrow and you don't want to miss it if you enjoy Louise's stories. In this case, it's the journey into love between two good friends: Truly Harbury and Noah Jensen. Noah is back from New York, he is a first-class player and, of course, he is not a big fan of long term commitments. He loves enjoying life and women. Well, that changes when he reunites with his only female friend, Truly. They start seeing each other in a different way (Truly already did..) and things are about to get interesting!

I needed him in the just-friends box. And then I had to nail the lid shut, just to make sure that’s where he stayed.

I am a massive fan of this romance troupe. A good friends to lovers romance always works for me and I loved how Noah and Truly's relationship evolved from a wonderful friendship to a beautiful love story. I really enjoy seeing all the layers of an author's list of characters and it was great to get to know these two to their core (and the people around them). Of course, I loved when sexual tension started, when the chemistry intensified and when love made its appearance. Is it my favorite book by Louise? Probably not but it definitely was entertaining, easy to read, with a good amount of feelings and a couple with smoking hawt chemistry. This girl is not complaining on any of that, especially when she gets what she wants: a happy ending. And I really enjoyed Truly and Noah's.

Loving Truly wasn’t a goal or a challenge. She was a way of life. She was and would be at the heart of everything, forever.

Therefore, I am rating International Player with 4 STARS because I really liked reading how these two turn their already beautiful friendship to something so much more intense. Louse developed this story very fluently, as always, and I continue enjoying the way she goes with her stories and characters. Noah and Truly worked so well together and their chemistry was impossible not to love. I always know where to go when I want a delicious British book boyfriend. If you are a fan of them too, do not miss reading Louise Bay's novels!

Meh.

International Player was one of those random audiobooks that I got from my audible account. It was like that blind date with a book and it would suggest you one to read. So I got this one and decided to take a chance on it. However, it was a bit boring and predictable.

This book definitely had it's pro's and con's. The characters were just meh. I hated how someone was forgotten because they went somewhere else? That doesn't really make sense to me but I guess that happens to some weird ass relationships or friendships. Then they kind of annoyed me, like a lot. I hated the comparison of the girl and her twin. She never felt like she was good enough and that her sister was like a present from the gods. It was annoying as crap to listen to and it made me want to stick stuff into my ears.

Overall, it was eh. I'm glad it's over and I can move on with my life.

My audio listen for the week :)

This was a fun, slow burning, friends to lovers story.

Noah typically doesn't date women like Truly, in fact she is the complete opposite of the sort of girl he is attracted to. She is beautiful but I guess she is what some men would term 'wife material' - the person you settle down with and spend the rest of your life loving.

Noah has never experienced the desire to be with one person long term before. He is feeling very conflicted about Truly as the depth of what he feels for her is new for him. Truly has had a crush on Noah ever since she can remember but his player status has always made her err on the side of caution when it comes to his flirtations with her.

However, she may 'truly' be the person he has been waiting for but didn't see coming.

Really enjoyed this story :)

Hmm Truly wasn’t my favorite female character at all, she needed a man to show her, her worth. I just don’t buy that. She and her sister both have their strengths sure but I don’t know I just didn’t get it.
I understand her need to keep what she and Noah have in this box but it was almost too boxy. That probably doesn’t make sense but I don’t know I guess I wanted something more. The chemistry was there but the friendship for me wasn’t and with the way, this book was presented I missed that I guess. I mean he helps her sure but maybe we are missing parts of the story because it felt rushed and not complete.

I enjoyed the narration. It didn’t scream out to me.

***COMING NEXT WEEK - FULL REVIEW ***

4 CROWNS

I truly enjoyed Louise Bay’s International Player. I liked Noah and Truly. Everything from their relationship, to their conversations and their physical intimacy was great.

Noah is your typical playboy bachelor. Her doesn’t have an interest or a desire for love. He enjoys female companionship, and he is particularly drawn to the heroine’s intellect, which is and attractive attribute in a hero.

Truly is the shy twin, but when she is forced to move out of her comfort zone, she must seek out the help
Of Noah, thus putting her in the path to romance. Through Noah helping Truly, the begin to fall for each other. There are moments that bothered me when it came to her interactions with her twin sister, but at the same time it is the impetus for many of the plot developments in the novel.

While international player is enjoyable with loveable characters, it didn’t really deviate from the expected trope. I would have liked to see something more between the expected plot line. This variation would have made this read increase in my rating overall. Even with the lack of surprises, International Player was still a fun and sexy read.

I did truly enjoy this read, even if it was a tad predictable in areas. Truly and Noah are just light and fun and sexy, and there isn’t anything wrong with that.

This is not my first read by Louse Bay! I very much enjoy her books!! This friends-to-lovers was the perfect amount of laughter, action, passion and pain! Can't have one without the other!

This was a little flip for me, where the heroine is stronger (i feel like) and the hero IS strong but it's more coming from him at first rather then the damsel being chased and caught. They went from knowing each other to best of friends to lovers. Don't get me wrong nothing wrong with the heroine being the stronger character, it just puts me off slightly. I am old fashioned so forgive me but I do enjoy the chase. That said, this was fantastic to read still. I enjoyed growing with the characters and the story.

Noah is so so so swoon worthy! Strong, sexy and all man! Truly, again was very very strong, good head on her shoulder and smart, so so smart! I think that's what made me love the story is that she wasn't ditsy or indecisive in a immature way, but head-strong. The story and line were great, smooth transitions and easy words. it was a joy just reading.

I am rating this a 5 & highly recommended!
