It was a decent enough book that compiled all kinds of informative facts about bears, what makes bears bears and bear cultural in general. Unfortunately most of it seemed to be taken from other sources and although Sylvia did acknowledge these sources I feel like I may have been much better off to just go ahead and read those instead of returning to this book as a source material. And then the fact that it was also trying to sell other items in the back just really made me want to throw this book away
Also since of the set-up of the book a lot of information was repeated several times so it ended up feeling like I was slogging through this book after a few pages. And this was sad when you think of all the great reviews they chose to include at the front of the book to sell this book.
Bear-Ology may be a decent enough book for a starter but I would strongly suggest looking to other bear books to provide you with the information that you may be seeking.
The following review is based off my own opinions, thoughts and reactions. So in other words brace yourself. *There may be inappropriate words such as curse words.* You have been advised in advance.*
BEARY-TASTIC!
As a bear fanatic, I love reading about bears and studying them. So this book definitely had to be added to my book collection.
This book definitely represents the bear community and the bear personality. A lot of people could benefit from reading this book. There's so many facts and good advice on how to coexist in a community that's in bear territory.
My most favorite part about this book has to be when it talks about cultures that really value and respect the bear. As a Native American, reading about that in a book and seeing a creature being represented in a positive light is an incredible feeling.
I definitely think this book has good educational value that should be read to children and definitely discussed among others so bears and humans can coexist peacefully instead of this constant fight for dominance.
Plus this book has some really good trivia games/puzzles to play while you read along in this book. It really brings out the fun while also maintaining educational values. Definitely a must read book if you have plans in the future to go camping in bear country.
I learned a great deal from this book. Lots of interesting information, as well as a multitude of wonderful pictures. Any fan of bears will enjoy this book.
The author's ability to express the importance of bears in our world in a fun and exciting was is what impressed me about this book. We overlook bears and mistreat them in so many ways, it's refreshing to see a person stand up for their rights and advocate coexistance with these remarkable creatures. Thank you Sylvia, Bart the Bear, the Seus' and anyone else who tries to educate the public and advance the future of these wonderful animals.
This was a fun and informative book! I really did not know much about bears, so I loved all the fun facts. I can now tell a brown bear from a black bear (at least in theory!).
Great book for dispelling harmful bear myths that we all have and also for highlighting the plight of bears, especially here in North America.
This book is both captivating, humorous, and packed full of trivia. This is a must-read for a bear-obsessed human (like me), and wants to know more about these animals. From the "trivial but true" statements to the beautiful photographs, this book is definitely worth a try. After reading most of it, I can definitely say that I know ten times more than I knew about bears before.
considering what this book is - a Bears for Idiots/Dummies - it's good. and it doesn't have an alarming yellow/orange cover like the idiots/dummies series. but it still reads like one. it was the best at the library at the time in terms of quick general information on bears.
