However, after seven years of being engaged, that’s looking slightly doubtful. After going through ten wedding planners, they’re gaining a reputation somewhat akin to Henry the Eighth on the wedding circuit.
Gabe has vetoed symbolic dove releases, forests of flowers, fire-eating performers, and puce as a wedding colour. He’s confounded an army of wedding professionals, and now Dylan, the man who knows and loves him better than anyone, has joined the ranks of the confused. Can anything please his fiancé and get them to the altar?
From bestselling author Lily Morton comes the sequel to Rule Breaker. A romantic comedy novella full of family chaos, meddling friends, sexy bathroom encounters, and love. Always love.
She lives in sunny England with her husband and two children, all of whom claim that they haven't had a proper conversation with her since she got her Kindle.
She has spent her life with her head full of daydreams, and decided one day to just sit down and start writing about them. In the process she discovered that she actually loved writing because how else would she get to spend her time with hot and funny men?
Her latest release is Under Gorse and Stone, which is a magical Christmas story about a centuries-old dragon and his human mate.

My favourite parts of the story: - Dylan and Gabe - the way things came together in the end - the other characters from the series - Dylan's parents and siblings - some funny and some serious moments - Joe – looking forward to his story 🤞
When I started reading this, I was hoping it would be a 5-star read for me, but there were some elements which are typical for most of this author's books that I just don't click with. So while I did enjoy the story overall, I didn't love it as much as the original book and the following short stories.
Jesus Christ, this was exhausting. Rule Breaker was a 5-star read for me back when I first read it four years ago, but I've been increasingly struggling with Lily's writing lately, which I think is a combination of her going hard on the few things she knows how to do and dialing them up to eleven, and me just refining what I personally prefer to read. Here, she crams every single character you've ever met in any one of her books, a truly impressive feat given it's a novella, and it's generally something I hate. I appear to be in the minority here, but constantly name-dropping your other pairings is distracting and annoying, especially because I read a lot and I don't have the exact plots and relationship intricacies of every other pairing ingrained in my head. There is also SO much dialogue here, and in that very cutesy fast-paced, constantly quippy way that is fun to read for a bit, but gets tedious after literally 100+ straight pages of it. And when they're not quipping, they're having sex in public places, and apparently one of the characters keeps what is essentially a pocket pussy on him at all times so he can.... IDK, use it on his fiance in public bathrooms... WHAT?? That sex scene was so weird and all I could think was that having sex in a fancy restaurant bathroom is exciting enough without also adding fucking portable sex toys into the mix... Add to the fact that this couple has been together for years, and somehow still can't do basic communication to the point of them both not realizing the other wants a small wedding, which was just such a stupid and lazy conflict device I was rolling my eyes. This was not a fun read.
Disappointing, which is increasingly the case for this author for me. We may need to part ways soon :(
"Marriage is a ring on your finger and a signature on a piece of paper. It’s the love that gives it life.”
Well I can see why people were disappointed when they read this....
Gabe and Dylan deserved better. This was cute dont get me wrong but it felt half assed even for a novella. Gabe has delayed getting married for 7 years due to the trauma from his past but that was so quickly glossed over...why even bring it up then?
The most disappointing of all was that there were no vows. How?? After all the crap they went through they deserved that. I wanted to read that and get emotional about their vows but nope lily sis couldn't even give us that.
Cute all in all but felt very forced and tired. I liked that they finally got married but they deserved a better ending. I am curious about Joe, the wedding planner but given how LM has constantly disappointed me idk if I will read it.
It's been a while since I've read the Mixed Messages, Finding Home, and Forced Proximity series, several characters from those series popped up in this book and it took me a bit to remember who everyone is and how they are all connected.
In the past, I have loved this author so much and when I initially read the Mixed Messages series I loved every single book in it - but now I feel I'm a bit over this author. All of her books have so much banter and so many pop culture references and quick witted conversations- I've read 11 of her books and I'm just a bit over it by now. So many similarities between books and between characters. This book could have been about any other couple in one of her series and read the same.
If you loved Rule Breaker, there is absolutely no reason why you won't love this sweet novella too. After a 7 year engagement, Dylan and Gabe were finally ready to put nuptials on the calendar, but first they needed to find the perfect wedding planner. I laughed so much at the texts Dylan and Gabe exchanged after each failed attempt to hire someone. It seemed impossible that they'd find a person whose ideas and opinions aligned with theirs. But this wasn't a groomzilla story, thank goodness, and while it was light and funny, it was the love between Gabe and Dylan that took center stage. They way these two supported each other was so beautiful. It would be easy to assume that, after being together as long as they had, maybe some of the shine had worn off, but no. Time had made them strong and more solid than ever and every time they referred to each other as best friends I had to hunt down another tissue.
The cameos made me so happy. Jude and Asa will forever be my favorite couple, but I loved seeing Henry and Ivo again too. Dylan's family was still crazy in the best of ways. And the nostalgia...god. Gets me every time. Now, if there is a petition for Joe's HEA out there somewhere, let me know because I will gladly sign it. Someone needs to restore his faith in love.
*I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.
I chose not to hide this so if you don’t want spoilers, don’t read this.
I decided to un-shelve Lily to see how she wrote a follow up to some beloved characters.
This got two stars for Dylan and Gabe. I love them so and their bond still written so well.
But um… this is called VOW MAKER. But there are NO VOWS. Like, this is build up to a wedding and the actual wedding was off page. Like. Um…. I just. Dude. Sigh. I wanted their wedding.
And I totally skimmed some family scenes because the snark and silliness can get exhausting.
I’m happy for Gabe and Dylan, but I feel a bit robbed, honestly.
A BIT OF SNARK ON THE WAY TO THE ALTAR OF HAPPINESS!
What a gorgeous catch up with Gabe and Dylan, full of all the usual snarking between them which is such a character of their relationship.
These two men have captivated me since they first appeared in Lily’s Missed Messages series just like Dylan fascinated Gabe with his sharp tongue and quick wit.
We’ve had brief snippets of their life as bonus scenes in Lily’s newsletter or her Facebook group, but this is the first lengthy visit back into this wonderful world of friendship, of family and all the history that goes before them and I adored it.
It’s funny, it’s heartfelt, at times it reminds you of the difficult upbring Gabe had and how Dylan broke down the heavy walls he’d put up around himself to protect him from more pain. It’s romantic, it’s scorching hot, it’s everything you’d want to read in a book between these two men.
I’m also officially adding my request here for a story for Joe, the wedding planner who turns up drunk as a lord at their first meeting but who clearly is the right man for the job. He’s got an air of sadness that surrounds him and he’s going through a divorce with a man you sense he still loves.
So come on Lily – second chance romance for Joe please!
As for the rest, with all the usual suspects on hand, and a visit to Devon where love just surrounds them all, this is a festive treat in abundance.
I loved Gabe and Dylan in Rule Breaker even when Gabe was being a giant twat. So you can imagine how much more I love them being so stinking sweet and lovey dovey, especially Gabe’s stoic ass.
But it wouldn’t be a Lily Morton book without an expansive array of witty banter and fierce one liners. I can’t recall a book making me laugh more. Most epically during the family dinner, I laughed so hard I was in stitches.
And of course my boys always know how to burn up the sheets, the desk, the luxury bathroom stall or wherever else their needs for each other took them. Holy smokes!
I’m hoping that we’ll be seeing the inebriated wedding planner Joe again. Which I have a pretty good inkling we might because everyone deserves a HEA!
“I would stay with you through everything, sweetheart. It’s you and me until the day we die.”
“Don’t mention dying,” I grumble automatically. I shake my head. “But I do want to get married.”
“Really?”
I nod. “Absolutely. I’d just sort of forgotten the reason.”
“And what’s that?”
“You.” I stare into his bright, wonderful face. “Just you and me.”
It only took seven years of being engaged, but in Vow Maker Dylan and Gabe finally tie the knot. It only took more than a handful of disastrous and preposterous wedding planners, before they found the one that understood them best. It only was a couple of weeks of pre-wedding qualms before they saw what really mattered. It only required a few people to witness the beautiful ceremony of a couple destined to be together. It only needed a few minutes for them to exchange the vows that they promised themselves to each other - for a lifetime of forever. 🎊
“I tell him secrets, knowing he won’t use them against me. He’s my lover, best friend, co-conspirator, and teammate. He’s everything wrapped up in a quirky, gregarious, gorgeous man. He is truly my better half.”
Even though Dylan and Gabe know that they are in love and are perfect for each other, there's still something holding them back from putting a ring on it to make it final. Call it second thoughts or cold feet or simply a way to remember why it is that they want each other in the first place - that even in your worst days or your happy thoughts, you are the one I want to turn to. 🥺 And Lily Morton gives them all the reasons why their walk down the aisle is the one place they belong. With a lovely balance of frisky action, heart-felt discussions, believable uncertainty, signature humorous yet light-hearted laughter, and genuine friendships, I was cordially invited to witness the satisfying and hard-earned but delightful conclusion to the couple that started it all. 💒
I delighted in seeing how smitten Gabe and Dylan are still with each other; finding time to get their hands on each other, wherever and whenever, but still, also find the nurturing comfort of sharing in each other's fears and insecurities. ❤️🩹❤️🩹 Gentle as it is mindful, their relationship is something couples who have been together for so long and wonder why they need a ring to finalize their commitment, will certainly relate to. 'Just go on doing what you’re doing, Dyl. Marriage is a ring on your finger and a signature on a piece of paper. It’s the love that gives it life.' Even though I've never been in this position - yet - I liked how they both talked it out. It felt very natural and honest and something that should be discussed beforehand.👌🏻
“You alright now?”
He kisses my forehead. “Yes. Thank you.”
“You don’t ever need to do that. It’s my pleasure.”
“I do more than you know. Every day, I thank whatever fate shoved you into my path.”
Dylan is forever understanding, loyal and supportive, because he knows the trauma Gabe has experienced. And it's with his nurturing love and gentle patience and care, along with his playful chiding that Gabe resolutely knows that he is the one for him. We get to see why Gabe is so hesitant and unsure, and that tender bedroom scene was needed to show how much Dylan was there to help him overcome his own insecurities and doubts and misgivings. 🫂
For even when they have differing views on what they want from a wedding, the decision they finally reached showed us how much of a team they are. I've always had a soft corner for these two, and I was really happy with how everything played out. Surrounded by only the lucky ones they hold dear, it was a wedding that sparkled with happiness and cheeky banter and lovable laughs that proved once again how special a friendship they have with their best friends. ☺️ Be it Henry or Jude - they were a witness to their history - how their dynamic blossomed into something more - 'I heard that name more and more, and it was always said in a way that he had never used before about a man. It was irritation mixed with fondness. Admiration mixed with vexation. And then finally it became complete fascination' - that blossomed something even deeper in my heart, as well. 🤍 The wedding was so perfect - so them - a beautiful union between two souls who deserved each other and more.
“I can’t stop my grin. “Your devotion to my happiness really touches me.”
“To the extent that you will obey me, I hope.”
I sigh. “I’ll have a chat with him.”
“There you go,” he says cheerfully, patting me on the arm and ignoring my glare. “Do your own thing, Gabe, and just please you and Dylan.”
Joe was an unexpected surprise, but an interesting and welcoming addition to the existing array of friends. I liked how he barreled his way into their lives, I appreciated the advice he gave Gabe. He has the innate calmness to his personality, one that a wedding planner should have - to not panic in the face of panic and take everything in stride with a clear perspective. Dylan acknowledging him as a friend that Gabe should need in his life really warmed my heart and with his sad eyes 'leaving them warm, focused, and maybe a little sad. It sits wrongly on him. He seems to be a man made for sunny smiles and quick retorts', I am curious to know what his own story will be like. 😟
“Happy?” I ask.
I stroke his hair back, and he nestles into my hand. Then he gives an utterly joyous smile. “I’m always happy with you.”
The profoundness of his tone belies the simplicity of his words, and I swallow hard. “Me too,” I say hoarsely. “You’re everything to me. I want this marriage to work.”
“Then just carry on as you are. Marriage doesn’t mean you have to change, Gabe. Just keep loving me, and I’ll keep loving you.”
Awww, remind me that I'm single, why don't you? ☺️🫠 Of course, Gabe's retort is as charming as ever for his personality, but it's what makes them work. The banter is once again - spot-on; playing off each other seamlessly and effortlessly, it's even when Gabe is prickly that he has the ability to soften Dylan's heart. There is always that tinge of warm fuzzy feelings that overlaps even their snark and cheeky comeback. Never wavering in their back and forth, whether tackling an old annoying flame, charming up the relatives, entertaining friends or simply in the comfort of their own home, they truly bring out the best and worst in each other. 🥰 And as sad as I am to see this series conclude, the joyous high that it ended on reminded me that their future together will most certainly be a happy one. for 'he fits there as if made for me—this merry-hearted, wonderful man—and I will love him until I die.
And if that’s not a good start to a marriage, I don’t know what is.'
I loved this. While I can see why some readers might be heavily disappointed by this not being as overly romantic as a romance book wedding is "supposed" to be, I found this to be the perfect ending for Dylan and Gabe.
I loved the Mixed Messages series with the first book still on my top favourites list.
It was a huge pleasure to get this novella-length, extended epilogue to Gabe and Dylan’s story, and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this universe.
Was it lovely to see these two guys happy and settled? Yes. Did it rip me off my seat? No.
Tbh, the issue with Dylan thinking that Gabe maybe doesn’t want to get married felt a bit fabricated, and imo most of the story could have been condensed into something a little shorter and more impactful, but I’m not really complaining. All in all good fun and a must read if you've read book 1, or indeed the whole series.
Always nice to catch up with Dylan and Gabe but it wasn't long enough! I needed more snark and more involvement of the other characters, seeing as Gabe and Dylan can be linked to pretty much everyone in the Lily Morton universe!!
⭐︎4.5 "Was So Fun Revisiting Dylan and Gabe" Stars!⭐︎
We're back for a novella of the couple that started it all with this lovely author.
Dylan and Gabe have been engaged for 7 years. They're now on their 10th wedding planner. There seems to always be something wrong with something and Gabe, most of all, turns down everything every wedding planner suggests. Hilariously, the wedding planners come up with ridiculous suggestion after ridiculous suggestion.
Dylan worries that Gabe, in his heart of hearts, doesn't want to get married. And Dylan would be fine with that, but at the same time, Gabe seems determined to have a big wedding. Which we learn, Gabe believes Dylan wants.
So you could say there's some...mixed messages between them 😉
Also, it turns out that Gabe is having nightmares again, and he wasn't telling Dylan because he didn't want to worry him. Oh, silly Gabe.
But these two are stronger than ever, they get through it together, even stronger for it. And once they communicate about what they both really want for the wedding, things finally go smoothly.
Only took 7 years 😂
We get some smexy times as well, and the chemistry was on point. Those sex scenes were hot as hell.
My only real gripe, and my reason for giving this .5 stars off, is that we didn't get to see the actual wedding ceremony. We saw the before and after, which was great and I loved it, but not the actually marrying part. I was bummed we didn't get it. I just don't like when authors skip over the actual ceremony part in books - especially in a book dedicated to getting these two men finally married. Just feeling like being duped a little bit. All that build up and we don't even get to see the actual "I do" part?? Hmph.
Buttt, otherwise, I simply adored this and absolutely loved returning to Dylan and Gabe. It reminded me how much I loved these two in the first place.
It was great to be back in the world of the Mixed Messages series with all these familiar faces ❤️ it was like coming home or savoring your favorite food anew after a long time. Of all of them, though, it was obviously even nicer to find Gabe and Dylan again 😍 loved them one more time! I didn't find them distorted or watered down after Rule Breaker, which could have been a potential risk for a sequel that came after a while. Their characters, their banter, their flirtations, their bickering, their love, are still the same 😍 I really enjoyed this book, it is funny, sweet and romantic, with some profound moments. Reading it for me was a very sweet walk down memory lane, and above all a nice addition to the story of these protagonists. The author did a great job in telling us something new about them, in building a story and an actual path that Gabe & Dylan live and face together during this novella, always hand in hand and at each other's side, always loving and supporting (and of course teasing!) each other. (Extra and special mention for Joe, a new character introduced here for the first time who intrigued me. He is very funny but also shows depth, I would love to read his story in the future too!). If you loved Rule Breaker and the Mixed Messages series, if you love Dylan & Gabe, this book is for you, you will adore it! ❤️
I received an Arc of this book from GRR, whom I thank, and this is my honest review.
Ita 🇮🇹
Dylan and Gabe are always a good time. I loved their beginning and was thrilled to see their “ending”. For some reason, I kept thinking “I’ve read this…this is familiar” and I’m not sure why. It was strange. It wasn’t quite as swoony as I anticipated but when it swooned, I felt it from my head to my toes. Dylan’s family are a hoot. Joe has a story and I can’t wait for it! Also, weddings always make me cry. And crack up in this case!!
Dylan and Gabe were always my favourite couple in this series, and I generally really like Lily Morton. But I should have realized that this extended epilogue would not be my jam. It was way more cheesy and way less sexy that I would have preferred. I'm also kind of over Morton's insistence that getting married is the ultimate goal in any relationship. Bit heteronormative for me.
Vow Maker is the fourth book in Lily Morton’s amazing Mixed Messages series and a sequel to Rule Breaker, where Dylan and Gabe first meet and fall in love. It is probably obvious, but you are going to definitely want to be familiar with Rule Breaker to enjoy this one, and reading the other books in the series wouldn’t hurt either, as those characters make appearances here as well. Rule Breaker was my first Lily Morton book and it started me on a journey of adoration and pretty much obsession with this author, and Gabe and Dylan have always had a soft spot in my heart. So I was thrilled when I saw that Morton was writing a wedding story for the two of them, and I absolutely loved it.
This book is total fan service for readers who love this couple and I was all here for it. It is fun and entertaining, but also mushy and sweet and just a perfect way to send Gabe and Dylan off to their future as husbands together.
This was a sweet follow-up cementing Dylan and Gabe's HEA with cameos from everyone and a new character, Joe the wedding planner, whose story I'm sure will be coming. If you've read Rule Breaker you know what you'll be getting here.
~4.5 Loved: ◇ Gabe and Dylan - they are still perfect together and their love shines bright ◇ Catching up with Jude and Asa and Ivo and Henry. True friendship between the characters in this series is an absolute joy to witness ◇ Dylan's family ◇ All the laughs and the more serious moments, romantic and sexy times ◇ How everything played out at the end ◇ Joe - the wedding planner. Looking forward to his story
Some things felt a bit repetitive (I could totally live without Fletcher making an appearance), but overall, I loved visiting Gabe and Dylan and the rest of the gang. It just was more about enjoying the familiar than discovering new things.
It is always lovely catching up with Dylan and Gabe. I enjoyed reading of the wedding plans and the wedding. Wish there was more wedding in it. Overall a sweet read.
I love love LOVE this novella soo much! If you like Rule Breaker you’ll love this novella too. We got Gabe and Dylan’s happily ever after (a very well deserved happy ending after the drama of Rule Breaker). I just loved to read about all the growth Gabe and Dylan had in their relationship. 7 years together is an amazing feat! I’m soo proud of my men.!! It was hilarious reading about all their adventures with the weeding planners!! Lily writes comedy so well I just love the humor of her stories.
Aside from the wedding my other favorite park was reading about the other characters from the Mixed Messages series. Jude and Asa are still soo in love with each other and Harry and Ivo still not loving Devon as much of the rest hehe.
I just loved the story a lot! Thank you Lily for this beautiful gift!
