A ten year old girl reads a sign in the hall of her elementary school advertising a contest for Halloween stories. Inspired by the local Saturday night “Creature Features” show, hosted by Bob Wilkins, she writes a story about a traveling salesman who won’t take no for an answer, and his murderous final customer who drives him mad when the salesman’s severed hand keeps knocking on ever door he closes. Upon reading this story, the girl’s teacher emphatically says, “You need to submit this!”
She submits the story, and wins a stack of books as her prize.
Two months later the teacher asked her to stay after class.
“Here,” the red-haired teacher said. “I want you to have this. It isn’t much, but I think you can use it.” The girl takes the bag; a smile makes the freckles on her teachers face bounce with joy. The girl reaches inside and pulls out a black and white composition note book, a Bic blue crystal pen and card for her birthday that said, “Write a little something everyday. Don’t ever stop.”
The little girl smiled; touched by the fact that her teacher remembered her birthday; thrilled at the validation of her writing ability after the girl had felt her story was long forgotten.
And now, that girl is published.
Born in Castro Valley, CA, Deborah Rae Cota ventured into many arenas seeking a home, but pen and paper (along with her trusty camera) has always filled the void. When Deborah isn’t writing, she’s cooking for her family, or screaming in the stands of her favorite local sports teams where she lives, breathes & works in the beautiful Bay Area.
And she hasn’t ever stopped writing.

This book hit differently. It’s haunting, raw and so real in its emotional depth. The Dante Chronicles has never shied away from darkness but The Nest plunges straight into it. If you’re already invested in this world, buckle up. If you’re new here—start from The Kindred and thank me later. Can't wait for the next one to be released!
