I closed the door on magic long ago... the day it made me an orphan.

Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives — my mother among them — to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it's back.

As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I'm the key to reviving the coven. And there's an incredibly sexy guardian stranded on my couch who's promising to help me stop the demons and keep the veil between the realms standing.

One problem: I've never been able to use magic. Our local bad boy warlock assures me I have the talent, but even if I did, we don't have enough witches to complete a coven. The only way to survive is to pull together this pack of magicborn misfits, who have more secrets than spells, into a makeshift coven.

Can we — three untrained witches, a sarcastic warlock, and an overly intense guardian — take back the city... before the demongate falls and the forces that killed my mother destroy us too?

I live for magic. Modern magic, infused with heart and humor. Sometimes with an edge. Always with bright romantic sparks.

When I’m not spinning urban fantasy tales, you can find me flying after my 6-year-old witchling, cackling with my coven, or savoring a book while cuddled up with my cat familiar and, of course, coffee.

Alix believed she had no magic, unlike her parents, who died heroically ten years before battling demonic evil. Yet now, she will find herself spell-deep in a fight to save the world from darkness, and just maybe she did have magical powers and just maybe she was one heck of a powerful witch!

Get ready to kick evil’s butt, laugh out loud and cheer for Alix, her big heart and keen sense of right and wrong! RISE by Sierra Cross is a fast-paced, completely entertaining fantasy with characters one can’t help but love how well they were drawn!

Old friends with magical powers will return, a handsome and honorable guardian will appear and one sarcastic warlock will round out the newest coven in town, and trust me, they are far from predictable, unless you can count unpredictable as being the norm!

Alix’s life is about to be turned upside down and inside out, so hang on as we join forces in the latest battel between good and evil.

I had fun with this book and can’t wait to move on to the next book in this series!

Rise was an excellent start to new paranormal fantasy world. This is the first book of the Coven of Fire series. The cover is amazing.

I loved the plot and I loved all the characters, especially Alix as a lead character. She is a badass and really brave girl. I loved the creativity between two different world and paranormal creatures.
I have to say I was not expecting this book to be as good as it was! It`s an amazing fantasy adventure. I think I found a new favourite writer.
I really connected with the whole story, and it was a well-developed. It was such a great and fun adventure. Loved it and now I want to read another. If you like witches, mystery, fantasy and magic then is this book perfect for you. I recommended it!

As soon as I saw the words magic, sexy guardian, witches, and bad boy warlock in the synopsis, I instantly added Rise to my TBR. I can never resist a book about witches.

The result? Rise is a fast paced and thrilling start to the Coven of Fire series.

My favorite aspect of Rise was the world building. I loved learning more about the witches, guardians, and warlocks. It was especially interesting to see how they all fit together with each branch serving a specific purpose (i.e. the guardians protecting the coven).

Additionally, the plot was incredibly action packed. While I found the majority of plot twists to be predictable, it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. I was still incredibly curious to see how everything would turn out. Would Alix find her childhood friends in time? Was Alix's magic stronger than she thought? Those were just some of the questions driving me forward! I also enjoyed the forbidden romance angle; however, I wish it was more developed. I could feel chemistry between Alix and Matt, but it wasn't as strong as I would've liked. Hopefully, in the next books it gets better.

Now for the characters. I found the majority of them to be easy to root for and likable. Alix, the lead, is strong, sassy, and determined. Sometimes it did bug me that she wasn't always willing to listen to something she didn't believe in (i.e. when everyone kept telling her she had magical powers); however, not the biggest issue overall. I think Matt was my favorite, however. He's an interesting guy with a lot on his plate, and it was interesting to see him balance his duty to the coven with his personal wants/desires. The warlock and the other witches were fun as well. I will admit, though, that I never felt a strong connection to any of the characters. Yes, I liked them, but I feel like they weren't as developed as they could've been. For example, Alix's POV had the tendency to be very cut and dry. Not many emotions came through in my opinion.

Regardless of my issues, I still enjoyed Rise. I look forward to diving into the sequels sometime soon!

Rise is a pretty good start of a series. It's engaging, with a likeable kick-ass heroine in the driver's seat. Alix is a cool chick, her sidekicks are fun and capable group - I took a shine to Asher with his snarky comments.

However the story has one big flaw - it's predictable. Every single major plot point could be seen approaching from a mile away. And that killed most of my excitement for it. I know I only marked it as currently reading a couple of days ago but I was actually struggling with it for a couple of weeks now. And while I know that almost everything has been done before I still expect some original spin on the same old stories.

If this is your first brush with the genre you'll probably find this book amazing. But after reading a lot of the major UF series in the last couple of years, it takes a lot more to grab me. However I am willing to give the second book a try before making a final decision regarding the series.

Rise is a fast-paced, urban fantasy, witchcraft & spells focused story that despite of being ridden with predictable twists, wins your heart with characters who you'll gradually care about.

I loved this for the characters, particularly two, if that isn't evident already. The plot is interesting with Alix, an orphan who couldn't excel her magic skills after her mother sacrificed herself in a Coven of Fire, setting out to close a veil between the realms that has worked as a demon-entry point. There are concepts that were new to me because I haven't yet been indulged in many witch stories but I enjoyed it all the more for that reason. There are terminologies and settings that resonate with the targeted idea, thereby drawing me in.

Alix is a relatable character, for me. She's this confused, frustrated young bartender who wants to get that wont (normal human without magical powers) tag off her but is saddened when she doesn't see any possibility of that wish being granted. But while feeling all this inside, she keeps up her personality topped with confidence and temper that somehow impressed me most of the times. This might not be impressive to many readers, I totally understand, but it worked for me, so yay! In addition, the narration is as a first-person through Alix's head and that makes her more alive to me.

Moving on, the supporting characters are as imposing as the main character herself. Each of them has a role to play but my favourite had to be Matt, the guardian who initially gets saved by Alix—won't elaborate since this is supposed to be spoiler-free. This incident was another thing that made me happy since heroine saving the hero trope needs more and more stories, and I'll be appreciating every little sequence that says this out loud—even if the sequence is super small and not being as much highlighted. Matt, as a character, was intriguing yet sweet and one of those bookish guys I get a huge crush on. His chemistry with Alix, and how it all unexpectedly blossoms, was fun to read, too. The other characters were important to the story, no doubt, but not all of them left as much impact as these two. Though, there's an entire series waiting to spotlight them so I won't be quick to judge that factor now.

The story fell flat to me at a few places where some things turned out as I has expected them to be, though ending revelations did take my slightly by surprise, but the writing held me throughout. Especially in terms of world-building and the sassy attitude of the protagonist. Overall, this was a fun to read and I would try to get my hands on other instalments in this series.

I would recommend it to all those who are looking for a witchcraft themed urban fantasy that's guided by characters who make up for an otherwise good story line.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

*insert big sigh*

I ....struggled with this book, for a couple of reasons, and it was very touch and go as to whether I would finish it.

First person, single point of view is not one of my favourite ways for a book to be written and only Alix has a here. Matt really should have been given a voice, I think, even if he had been given a first person voice, I would have enjoyed it more.

It could do with a thorough edit. Not enough minor things to put you off reading, but enough of them for me to note they were there and they needed commenting on.

Somewhat predictable plot. I saw it all coming at me. Every twist and turn. Maybe I read too much, but there were no surprises in this book for me.

BUT!!!

Even though only Alix gets a voice, I did like her. Because only she speaks we get up front and personal with her every step of the way. I really felt for her in places. She is very witty and there are a couple of laugh out loud moments.

And BECAUSE I saw it all coming at me like a freight train, I liked watching it all unfold.

I just. . . . . I dunno!

I'm sorry I can't word better what I think about this book, you know it pains me so when I can't say what I need to!

Will I read book 2? Possibly. The blurb will have to really REALLY grab me.

3 stars

I loved the the plot !! Alex is bad-ass..What's with all the ninja moves ?? Matt seems to be the good boy here and Asher of course is a bad bad boy !! I loved Callie's character and it was too bad that she had to become evil. Call it instinct, but when I read about Callie's character and how pure she is, I had a feeling something bad was going to happen to her. But, I am sure there is hope for her. Liv seemed a little bitchy at first, but she has grown on me. Maybe I missed, but I still didn't get what the tree symbolized. Yah yah, it's not called out to anyone in all these years and it calls to Alex and so Eric thinks she is going to be his queen.

So, this first book mainly introduced us to all the characters. We came to know of several useless rules which are in place to avoid abominations. Some of Matt's magic traits were disclosed and we know that another witch has to a bind on Alex's magic, to save her. Oh, the things Asher has to do for the coven ;) The family betrayal in the end was a little shocking. We also come across the powerful Caedis Tenebris and his unhealthy obsession with Alex !

A little disappointed that Alex's full power did not manifest. Hopefully, we have some answers in the next book. I also wish we have more info about Alex's parents and how the entire coven was killed.

Rise is the first book in the new adult Coven of Fire series by author Sierra Cross. It has been some time since I have read an urban fantasy and even longer since I have read an urban fantasy featuring witches, so I was really pumped to read Rise. I love new adult books that are in the fantasy and paranormal genres because there don't seem to be too many of them. Rise did not disappoint. I enjoyed this read from start to finish. There were a few slow sections of the book, but overall, I flew through this novel and I am anxiously awaiting the second book, which is already out. In fact, the first four books were all released in 2017, which is crazy! You go Sierra Cross! Book 5 is due to come out this year.

Rise follows our main characters, Alix, Callie, Matt, with some great secondary characters as well. I really enjoyed how many people were showcased in such a short book. I think that is going to be my favorite aspect of the upcoming novels as well. We get to watch some of the characters come into their powers and we get to watch everyone as a whole as they try and save the world. We get to learn about their parents coven, and watch as they start their own to try and battle the demons entering their world. The plot was interesting, if not a little conventional and predictable. But it worked with the story. I am interested to see where the author is going to take this series next.

The characters were hit or miss for me. Some of them I loved and some not so much, which I think was intended. But as I said before, I like how many characters we were introduced to in this novel. I think it opens up lots of possibilities for future plot lines and developing relationships. Overall, I think the Coven of Fire series is one that I will enjoy continuing on with. It is a little formulaic but it was nonetheless a good read. If you like witchy urban fantasies and new adult books, give this series a try!

**Review on https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/ **

Alix has spent the last ten years trying to figure out her life without magic or purpose since her parents and the rest of the coven died. One night while tending bar, an almost spirit from her past shows up and demands she help him and her people, ignoring her protests that she is magicless. Almost against her will, Alix is drawn back into the world of magic, covens and demons. To put it mildly, she is way unprepared for the battle that has been brewing and it may cost her life.

This was such a fast paced adventure, seriously blink and you might miss something. I found myself reading the book in one sitting because it was easy to get sucked into the story and the writing was very approachable. The book (as per my ereader) was a little less than 200 Pages but still Sierra was able to build a complete world, with detailed characters and a crazy plot. There were so many twists and turns that kept me on my toes, most I could never have guessed at. At least three separate times I gasped out loud because I was so surprised by the shocking event that Sierra just threw at Alix's feet. I don't normally associate shocks and surprises with urban fantasy stories, but I found Rise to be up their with out of nowhere reveals.

Can we just take a minute to talk about how perfect Matt and Alix are for each other? Yes folks, there is a forbidden love here and it is so heartbreaking (one of the top 3 things that felt like my heart was being ripped out for Alix during the book!). Alix is part of the witch coven (sort of) and Matt is part of the Brotherhood that has sworn to protect the witches- but it is forbidden for the two to have any sort of romantic relationship. Gawd, I just wanted Matt to throw his ridged ruled out the window and Make Alix his... but yeah, we can't always get what we want.

Rise is the first book in a series of five, so don't expect the story to be wrapped up in a nice little bow- this is just the start of some serious action to come. I found myself really liking and rooting for Alix as well as her hodge-podge cast of sidekicks and all that she has endured and I want nothing but the best for her... but I am afraid nothing will go according to a simple plan. I don't know what Sierra has up her sleeve to put in Alix's path next, but I am pretty certain it won't be easy and I can't wait to read more.

Update 1/20/18:

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

Rise was an excellent start to a brand new paranormal fantasy series that is sure to be a hit among fans of this genre. While there were some flaws with the story, I still found the book very enjoyable and I am interested to see what happens next. The book is a quick, fun read and I am excited to see where this series goes.

The story follows Alix (love the spelling of the name btw), who is a bartender at a local club who wants something more from her life. But once she learns of a demonic force threatening those she loves and cares for most, she rises up to the challenge and begins to hone the powers that she never knew she had. I loved the creativity of the story and I loved Alix as a lead character. She is a badass and sarcastic, which is always a winning combo. I really connected with her character throughout the story, and she is a well developed character throughout the story.

However, since we only read from her perspective, this is also where the story hits a bit of a snag. I have no problems with reading from only one characters' perspective, but this story was screaming to be in dual POVs. I would have loved to hear from Matt's perspective (I have a specific reason for saying his perspective, but don't want to give away any spoilers...but you'll understand why I say him if you read the book). It would have made the story stronger in my opinion. At the end of the day though, this didn't bother me that much because I truly loved reading from Alix's POV.

The only other thing that I had a tiny problem with was the predictability of the story. I pretty much was able to tell the direction this story was going to go from the first chapter. While I still love the story and the creativity of the world, the plot itself was predictable which took something away from the reading experience. With this being said though, Sierra Cross did an excellent job at the world-building in the story!! I am intrigued by the world that she has introduced and I am excited to see where the story goes from here!

While there are a couple of small things that made me lower my rating, I still loved this novel!! This book is a fun start to a new series revolving around witches, covens, and demons. I definitely will be checking out the rest of the series and I can't wait to see what Ms. Cross has in store for Alix, Matt, and her other friends!

Happy reading :)

Alix Hill lost her past a few years ago in a tragic accident. Alix’s parents were witches but Alix herself did not inherit any of their magical abilities unfortunately but Alix is trying to go on with her life but it is hard especially when everyone keeps mentioning that she has magical powers and she has to keep reminding them that unfortunately she doesn’t.

The veil between the realms has been broken and demons are pouring through. Alix with the help of her new friends need to form a new coven in order to seal the veil once again and make the world safe again. Alix has no clue how she is supposed to help seal the veil and be a part of a coven when she has no magical powers. But everyone is counting on her besides they tell her she does have magical powers and that she is very powerful. With knowing what these demons are capable of and what they will do to the world Alix realizes she has no choice and must become a part of the coven and fight any way she can.

I have to say that I have really enjoyed following along with Alix, Callie, Liv and Matt on their journey to close the veil and stop the demons from getting through. Alix has a very strong willed personality that I liked a lot. But I kind of felt bad for her where Matt was concerned. I would very much like to see Alix and Matt become an item. I think they would make a great couple. I would very much like to see more of these misfits solving more mysteries. I can’t wait to see more of them in the next book Ignite. I would definitely recommend Rise to anyone who loves a good paranormal and witchy book filled with lots of magical energy and misfits.

I love a good Urban Fantasy, but it's a rare thing to find one that I enjoy as much as I did this one. It's well-written with some great world building, the characters and story are interesting, and the dialogue is witty and at times, quite humorous. I was quickly drawn in to the author's world of witches, warlocks, guardians, demons, and even a few shifters. Alix's story flows at a nice pace that kept my interest throughout. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

I freaking loved this book. Alix was such a fun character. Right off the bat, she was hopping over a bar and taking down a drunk customer harassing one of her coworkers. This is someone I want in my life. Alix had been through some unbearable things, but I thought she was coping remarkably well. Even as one intense thing after another popped up, she just kept rolling with it.

I really loved the little ragtag gang she formed throughout this story. I truly thought, because it is book one, everyone would make it through to the end. But you can't face that kind of evil without losing something. There was a revelation towards the end that I never in a million years would have even considered a possibility. Everything has changed, and I cannot wait for the second book.

Oh, and I really need to happen.

Decently entertaining

I enjoyed this book. I appreciated how infrequent the copy errors were and the fact that the story felt Finished, while still having plenty of room left for sequels. I really hate cliffhangers, so I was glad to see something properly ended, because a lot of ebook authors don't seem to have a knack for it. I'm glad the sequel will be out soon so I won't have to wait very long to see what happens next.

*This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.*
Alix thought that she had closed the door on magic ten years ago when she had abandoned all hope of ever being like her mother, the leader of a powerful witch coven. One night things start to unravel, bringing her close to a supposedly dead guardian, her childhood friend and fellow witch Callie, and a stubborn warlock, who says he's going to help them.
The Coven's job is to take care of the demon's who are trying to cross the border, but without there being one for the last ten years, the demons have gotten out of control. With their parents dead, Alix and Callie have only the help of a guardian and a warlock to learn how to wield their powers and form their triumvirate, in order to defeat the demons.
Personal life and magical circumstances mingle in this wonderful tale. I have to admit that, at first I was a little hesitant, going into this story, but Alix's wonderful personal strength and captivating personality soon had me glued to this adventure.
When one reads a book in which the characters call and seduce oneself, one is always impressed. Excuse my wording in the previous sentence but that is how I truly feel (and using "one" makes it sound fancier). Magical worlds and magic itself have always fascinated me and I can surely appreciate how the author was able to combine both into a wonderful book "potion".
The mix between the real world, with its technology and modernity, and the somewhat archaic world of magic, turn this book into a unique story. If magic wasn't enough there is even the "warrior" aspect of the story and the family circumstances embedded in the plot.
Besides being very entertaining and fun to read, I believe this book contains a series of lessons that are very useful in everyday life, regarding personal strength, reliance on others and family. I believe this is a story most people would appreciate and cannot wait to read what comes next for Alix and her friends/allies.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions reflected below are my own!

I am really happy I signed up to receive a copy of this book as it wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise and that would be a shame. I really enjoyed this. Rise combines interesting characters with an engaging storyline and incorporates that extra banter that I so enjoy in the dialogue between characters.

Starting with characters, I really liked Alix (Alexandra) who is our protagonist. The portrayal of the beginning of her journey was realistic - I could feel her worries, her confusion, even her initial denial. She is faced with information and events that completely alter the version of the truth she's known for the longest time, so her reactions made sense. I like that there was a clear structure of her acceptance of who she is.

I enjoyed our secondary characters as well! Matt was such an intriguing character to read about, with a lot on his plate and certainly was too much to deal with in the present moment. Similarly, Asher is another interesting character, whose story we didn't get to explore as much but I would love to learn more about him as the books progress. Liv and Callie were adorable and a joy to read about! I adored the strengthened sense of a girl power that is at the very heart of the essence of the Coven of Fire and I am excited to see how that develops with everything that happened during the last twenty percent of the book!

The only reason why this wasn't a clear 5 star book for me was that I was expecting a bit more of world building in this first book. We do get information about certain species and organisations in this urban fantasy world - and there is a super helpful glossary at the beginning too - but I feel like there are certain elements or species that weren't introduced or at least, introduced fully. I think we are bound to get more about the Brotherhood in the next book or we might be following the pace of Alix discovering everything too, but a bit more of world building wouldn't harm I think! However, this doesn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book and of the fact that now I feel absolutely DETERMINED to pick up the rest of the series!

A great new adult urban fantasy with fascinating characters, an intriguing world and lots of secrets to unravel. Would recommend!

This is a good start to the series. Sierra Cross has given us the background for the characters and the impending danger. She has built up the characters and gave them dimension. We have betrayals, struggles within, forbidden feelings, honor, loyalty and entertainment.

Alix is the main female character. She is stubborn and strong but has a chip on her shoulder and is in serious denial. when someone says something she doesn’t want to hear she runs from it. The book is told from her view and although it is nice to see her evolution into finding her inner self and seeing her struggles and triumphs, I find that Matt’s voice would have been good to have. I think that would have enhanced the book.

Matt is the guardian and you just feel for him. He lost so much and yet still has hope and honor. He is loyal to the coven and their children. He is so honest and just wonderful. I love seeing him struggle with his feelings but still hold true to his vows and honor. He is the one that gets through to Alix and gets her to see she is more than she thinks. He also protects her and her friends.

Callie-sweet and hyper. She is so earnest to do good.

Liv-great talent but a wanderer. She is the loose cannon but I think by the end she is more into doing what needs to be done than ever before.

Asher-love his broodiness. He isn’t always kind but he does tell it like it is. He works with the girls to thwart evil. He also helps Alix find out the truth as all of them does. He is sarcastic and sometimes rude but has good intentions.

Aunt Jenni- no words to say there. She is not what I expected.

The demons-not nice and Tenebris is just downright evil with a dash of charm.

The story is fast paced and gives the right amount of action, danger, snark and wit. It also adds the forbidden romance and the coming into your own and finding your confidence in yourself and abilities. We get world building and a prophecy but also we see friendships and bonds form. A good start to what should be a action packed entertaining series.

“Rise: Coven of Fire, Book 1” by Sierra Cross was an overnight read for me. I was hooked by the end of page one. I especially liked all the characters:

Alex Hill- bartender at Sanctum still trying to find her way in the magical world without powers and mourning her parents after ten years of struggle and regret. She is a lost soul that sees what she wants to see and ignores her true potential.

Asher- British owner of Taliman Books and a warlock that will shag any woman; but for a good cause. He is also a talented tutor of magic.

Matt Montgomery- a guardian of the covent and member of the Swords of Light Brotherhood who have always served the Covent of Fire. He takes his vow seriously, but is plagued by the death of the previous covenant and secrets that could have dire consequences. His attraction to Alix is forbidden.

Jennifer Hill- Alix’s aunt and Chief Operations Officer of tech giant Millennium Dynamics. She has raised Alix since the death of her sister and brother-in-law. She has told Alix that the two of them did not luck out and that unfortunately they just don’t have any magic. Aunt Jen wants to live in the Wont World (mortals and people with no magic).

Tenebris Stella- the demon and evil Caedis who has taken over the corpse of a human in order to stay on this side of the demon gates. This is real freaky stuff.

Liv and Callie- Alix’s two childhood besties and witches whose parents also died in the same accident that took Alix’s parents. These friends have magical powers, but need tutoring to hone their skills.

The story was riveting with action suspense, and paranormal romance. The author’s writing was strong and never stymied with unnecessary jargon. The plot was genuine in the same vein as Karen Morning and J.R. Ward , but the PG version. Here is where I think the author needs to spice it up a bit with some steam. I still wholeheartedly recommend this read because of the world building by the author and the alluring characters. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.

What a great story.  Full of action.

In this first book of the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series, we get introduced to our main character Alix.  She is a witch, who believes she is magically deficient.  She lost her parents in an accident when she was a teen.  She tried to practice magic when she was younger, but never could master anything.  Now she is just a bartending wont with a quick temper.

As the story goes on and introduces more characters we meet her guardian Matt.  He is incorporeal at first, but she brings him back from the veil he was trapped in for 10 the past years since her parents passed.  Matt teaches her what happened the night her parents died.  Now he is her guardian and will watch over her.  But there is one problem, their chemistry.  It is so strong and the pull is hard to resist.  She wants him, he wants her, but it is forbidden by law for them to be together.  On top of this there is an evil brewing.  And it is gunning for her.  She now has to find her magic and stop the evil that is trying to consume her.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Matt and Alix.  Alix is a kick ass witch and she is slowly peeling off the binds of her magic on layer at a time.  Matt is special.  Not just because he is a guardian.  There is more to him than meets the eye and I hope to learn more about it in the next book.

This book was very entertaining.  The world it is building is amazing, creating an intriguing story plot.  In this book we get the back story of how this all began.  We experience treachery and betrayal along with forbidden love.  This book is action packed from the start and kept my attention from the very first page.

A true battle of good vs evil.  Black Magic vs the Light.

I wonder what is in store for Alix and her band of misfits?!

New adult paranormal romantic suspense. A mouthful, but it nicely sums up RISE, the first book in the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series by author Sierra Cross. I am a big fan of the paranormal genre, especially if it has some contemporary romance and suspense thrown in, so this read was really right up my alley.

Sierra has created a world that exists right here in our own, a side, or underside, of Seattle that few but the magical can see. Although from a magical bloodline herself, Alix has always operated under the assumption that she just doesn't have it, the spark, the power that made her mother such a strong witch. But Alix, along with her hunky Guardian Matt, are in for some major surprises, and they start coming more quickly than either one is expecting.

I like Alix. Even before her gifts become more evident, she's a strong, kick-butt sort of woman. She's been just fine taking care of herself, so it's a bit of a challenge to accept Matt's new role in her life. But their chemistry is right on, and they make a good team, taking on the task of ensuring that the good people of Seattle will continue thrive, unaware and unharmed by the evil that surrounds them.

The backstory is well-developed, and Sierra has done a fine job of blending the real and the mystical so that this story is entertaining and engrossing enough to make me want to read more. RISE is a solid 4-star read for me, and I am very much looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Fans of new adult romance with less angst and a solid paranormal bent will enjoy RISE, should definitely have it on their TBRs.

Rise is set in Seattle, but with an urban fantasy twist; magic and witchcraft are at its core. The synopsis gave me Charmed vibes, which is still one of my all-time favourite TV shows, so I was an eager-beaver to get reading this book.

There were a lot of new ideas and concepts that needed to be introduced and Cross has done an amazing job of doing it in a gradual way that feels natural and isn't just an information overload. The great pace of the novel also enabled me to grasp this new world of demons and witchcraft in an easy to understand way with little confusion.

Alix is pretty awesomeMC. She’s both kick-ass and yet, somehow very relatable. I think it may have been her fear and confusion about what to do with her future, now that her whole life is in front of her - the way most of us are when we just finish college/university. Alix isn't the most emotionally stable person, but you would expect nothing less from an orphaned child to have some commitment and abandonment issues.

Matt is awesome. I feel hella bad for him, though, being trapped in a void in time for 10 years. Just think about how much has changed in that time and how overwhelming it would be for all of that to hit you at once. Smartphones, self-checkouts, an African-American president, Trump,  how small general electronic devices are. Not that he really had that much time to be able to absorb all of this. I truly loved his character and am keen to hopefully learn more about his backstory in the coming novels. One thing that I am curious about, is why he could only visit Alix while he was in the void...

Rise took me on some twists and turns that were both expected, and some that threw me for a loop. It's left me super keen to start reading the next instalment - especially to see if any of my hunches about the characters are correct.

Alix Hill is a young woman living in an alternative reality modern day Seattle whose mother was a very powerful witch who led a coven of powerful witches. After losing both of her parents and every member of the coven she has to make it through life without them. Ten years later, she's still healing from the trauma of all she lost. To top it off, she's forced to go through life knowing that she doesn't have any magical abilities like her parents. Throughout the book we watch Alix grow and change... And it all starts when she protects a coworker at the bar where she works. After she decides to leave that job and go work with her aunt, things start to change. Alix realizes that there's more to herself than she thought and that someone has been magically keeping her powers from her. This sparks a whole new life and a lot of dangerous adventure.

This story flows well and is very engaging. There are many twists and turns that leave the reader guessing. Even without being able to guess what is going to happen next, when it happens it's almost obvious because of how well the author set up the story line. There is a forbidden love aspect of the story which gives it just enough romance without being overdone, and gives her character even more of a tragic hero vibe.

The supporting characters are as well developed as the main character. Those supporting characters gave me the feeling of familiarity as they seemed like people I would know. There are some typos but nothing major. Overall I really enjoyed the story and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

This is the comfort food of UF. All the tropes you love, put together the way you expect, with a very engaging narrative style. A good balance of danger and intrigue with humor and lighter moments. The perfect type of read for unwinding after a long week. The MC is a tragic orphan from a magical family raised by her too young and not ready for the responsibility non-magical aunt. She is working as a bartender when things she thought long in her past start cropping up again and her life takes a turn for the interesting (and not the good vacation kind of interesting). Throw in a yummy, tension-filled, absolutely forbidden romance, a dream job that might not be all it is cracked up to be, and a trove of secrets from the past, and you've got the winning formula.

This is a fast, engaging read. It falls more on the cozy end of things. There is some tragedy and violence, but for the most part it stays off screen, and what is on screen doesn't get too graphic. The romance veers towards wanting to be steamy, but as it is a forbidden romance (and slow burn) this book stays clean. There isn't much character depth or nuance to the setting. I think part of that is that the story is told 1st person from an unreliable narrator. You only know what she knows, and between her youth and magical intervention, that leaves holes.

This is the first book in a series. The major conflict in this book was resolved but in a way that only opened more questions. You can start to see the beginning of a larger, overarching plot line. While there was the world building that you expect in a first book, this had plenty of story line too. It works as a full story and didn't feel like just a teaser for what is coming next. Although I do want to know what is coming next. Fun escapist read.

Alex Hill bartender extraordinaire.... Orphan and all around badass..... At a young age she lost both her parents in a freak bus accident. Frustrated she never inherited their witch powers... She trudges along in life with her rellious streak. Her aunt Jen desperate to get her to move on with her life, wants her to grow up and work at her company. While showing off at work, her anger sparks while protecting a fellow employee. All of a sudden her world gets turned upside down. Her boss reprimands her out of the blue, and people keep assuming she's a witch. No clue what they're talking about since she was officially told as a teen that she had zero magical ability she goes on her with her life. Done with her grumpy boss she decides to go and interview at her aunts job. It's there that things seem to appear different. Slowly she gets impressions and jolts of warmth.... Something is definitely happening. Could there possibly be something to all this magical talk? When a frequent bar patron angrily yells at her for being a sloppy witch and negligent to the danger surrounding the magical community she wonders if something might be going on. Imagine her shock upon realizing she wasn't as defunct as she thought... And to top it all off someone purposefully kept her defunct via magic.... Go on the ride of discovery with her.... Where did it all begin, and where will this end? Friendships are formed, possible love is found, and betrayal at every turn. Take the ride of your life...

Alix was born from a powerful witch bloodline but did not follow in the footsteps of her mother. Alix’s family along with many others were killed ten years ago in a bus crash leaving her to be raised by her Aunt Jenn. Only now is Alix learning that it wasn’t a bus crash but a demon attack. Matt, a guardian, was thrown into another realm by one of the witches in the fight, saving his life and trapping him there unchanged until a witch could set him free. He used this time to watch over Alix and train her in martial arts.

Out of the blue, Callie shows up after ten years and wants to revive the coven. No one will believe Alix that she has no magic, not Callie, Matt or Asher, a warlock she met while bartending. Alix realized that her life was going nowhere as a bartender and decided it was time to grow up.

For me, one thing that makes a great book is the author’s ability to paint a clear picture of each character and Cross did a magnificent job of that. I had cast each one of them as if it the book was a movie and chose who I was rooting for. Rise is the first book of the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series which will have a total of five books. As the story continues I hope we get a more in-depth look at some of the other characters which will only increase the enjoyment of the stories.

Rise is a well written book by Sierra Cross. It has a perfect pace that never leaves you feeling like you are being rushed through the story, nor does the story ever drag out. The plot is very well developed with some nice developed twists hidden within. There were definitely quite a few I did not see coming, but they were actually very well developed and made sense and not outlandish just to get a reaction out of the reader. It is definitely a unique plot and a neat take on witches that kept me reading on. This is definitely one of those books that are tough to put down and you will read in just a few sittings, if not in just one read.

Alix is a great character, who struggles really trying to figure out "who" she really is. You can follow her while she grows in this boo. Good thing she has the support of some really good friends. Matt and Callie are great additions, and even Asher with his own "charm" adds nicely to this unique group.

I will definitely pick up the next book in this new series since I am hooked and need to know what will happen next to Alix and her friends! I can definitely recommend this book. It has actions, paranormal activities, forbidden romance and so much more!

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)

Alix has been dealt a series of low blows by life in general and some unknown enemies in particular. Yet she’s still a virtuous person and a kick-butt defender of what she believes is good. Luckily, she discovers a few close friends, both old and new, who are willing to help her try to set things right... Nothing is really as it seems though, with danger and unknown enemies lurking around seemingly every corner. Alix and her friends will have to employ some very unconventional methods to try to achieve their goals.

Much is revealed in this book, about Alix, her friends and family, her past and future, as well as those closest to her. But there is obviously still so much more to learn about everyone and everything. I can’t wait to read further books in the series, and hope we are able to learn so much more about many of the things only hinted at or simply left unexplained.

I am voluntarily reviewing this novel after receiving a free copy.
Actual rating: 3.75 stars

As a lot of reviewers have said, this novel is nothing new for the genre, but I still found it fun, probably in large part due to our narrator. She has a sassy-yet-relatable voice that I enjoyed reading, and was easy to root for. I liked her love interest, too - though not as a love interest, due to the squicky details of their relationship (he knew her when she was 13ish and he was an adult, and then he got stuck in another dimension or whatever for 10 years, just occasionally popping by to try and get her to help him out - so basically he got to watch her grow up from a kid to a woman he was attracted to. yuck). The surrounding characters were hit-or-miss, and the plot was obvious at times, but certain details were neat. I liked the weird magic tree, and Alix using/discovering her magic was always interesting to read about. There were a few twists and turns that shook me (namely a certain character's fate, was not expecting that out of the blue), while others were predictable.

All together, there's not too much to say about this novel. If you like this sort of urban fantasy witchy niche with a sassy protag, you'll enjoy this. I just wish the love interest was better executed.
