Twenty-five-year-old Luca Elliot lives in a city divided. The humans and the supernaturals mostly keep to their own kind, but Luca—curious and desperate for work—crosses the border and finds himself employed by a tall, stupidly handsome Fae with killer horns. He should be intimidated, but instead, Luca is utterly captivated. Falling for the boss is a bad idea though, right?

Cair Haryk is only a visitor to the human world and, between his position in the Fae kingdom and a bargain he made years ago, he can never remain. He's content with that until he meets Luca—his soulmate—and hires him to work in his high-end lounge. Cair tries to guard his heart, but fate has other plans and, despite his best intentions, he falls for the pretty little human. Hard

Luca can't enter the Fae realm, and Cair’s time in the mortal lands is drawing to an end, so while the attraction between them is irresistible, their situation is impossible. They can't be together. It’s tragedy and heartbreak just waiting to happen.

Isn’t it?

CAIR is an MM paranormal romance with spice, size difference, and soulmates. It features a lovable human trying to find his place in the supernatural world, and a secretive Fae who's not as detached as he pretends to be. CAIR is Eryn Hawk's debut novel and first in the VEILED CITY series, which must be read in order due to the overarching plot and worldbuilding. Each book focuses on its own pair and their HEA, though certain background elements will be resolved as the series progresses.

A great book with steamy romance, nice world building and characters! I adored all the characters :D I also liked how we got Cair’s perspective. Even if it was less than Lucas it was still nice, I love getting both perspectives in romance books. I also didn’t realize this had a second book when I started reading it… So, I will definitely have to find my way to that one.

Amazing - Beautiful - Marvelous - Splendid - Gorgeous
I bought the book right after it came out in January and read the first chapter. And I don't know what went wrong, because it bored me. 😱
I must have eaten something wrong that day. Very strange, because I love this book! After forgetting about it in between, I reorganized my Reader last week and oh wonder ... why have I not already read this ...
Truly a gem of a fantasy story. It takes a bit of patience, which is not my strong suit, but oh my goodness, once it starts to sizzle, it doesn't stop.
From Cair's point of view, unfortunately, you don't get that much, so it's still hard for me to really grasp him, but you can't miss the possessive vibes coming from him.

I wanted him, romantically and carnally. I wanted to fuck him senseless, rut into him until he hung lax on the end of my cock, nothing more than a warm hole to use for my pleasure. But then I’d hold him to me, caress him, tell him how beautiful he looked covered in us. I wanted to protect him, care for him, provide for him. Show him what it meant to be the mate of a Fae. 🥵🥵😍😍

But Luca, oh my goodness, he's so great!!!
I'm still squealing inside about how he handles the difficult situations and doesn't let these overbearing creatures get to him.
Well, the romance is unfortunately only a little bit there, since both don't talk properly to each other for a long time and thus don't concede anything to each other, but the sex makes up for it all.

“Please.” I didn’t know at that point what I was begging for. More? Less? All I knew for sure was that I wanted Cair to ruin me for anyone else. But I was torn between wanting to be fucked mercilessly into the hard metal of his desk and wanting something more tender. 😳

Not a bad book and not badly written but kinda boring. Another monsters/fae book that doesn’t bring anything new to this trope, soulmates, insta lust, insta love, sappiness, sex focused, protective jealous fae. No depth, very little world building . Very cute and endearing characters though, and hotness galore. The idea was interesting but 60% in and I didn’t see anything of that world, of that monster part of town. We weren’t shown Luca interacting or living in that city, with and among monsters. Apart from a reptile-like woman,we don’t see other monsters and we aren’t told what kind of monsters there are, what they eat , what they drink, how they travel. Cair, apart from fangs, horns and pointy ears was a normal guy, dressed in normal clothes , with a normal dick and who does normal human things.
And another thing, I really wish that for books like this, with interesting-looking monsters authors should try and either put them on the cover (entirely and not only one horn and a single ear lol) or make some graphic art for them. I would have LOVED to see what the faes looked like, how the author imagined them.
I also heard the book ends abruptly and has no epilogue. Dear author, that’s a BIG NO. Always always put an epilogue. ALWAYS.
3 stars because I reached 65% and it was…enjoyable. They’re practically together now though and sadly I don’t care what happens later..

I read the blurb for this book and screamed. I was not expecting another Monstrous series but was hoping for a story with some grit and intrigue. But that's not what I got.

The first installment of Veiled City is as sweet as home-spun cotton candy: no relationship drama, no conflict, no suspense, and a Forever Soulmates kind of HEA.

I enjoyed the first third of the book, as Luca makes his way to the supernatural side of the city and is drawn to The Veil, a lounge/night club, and its owner, Cair, who gives Luca a job and a chance.

Cair's brother, Tee, is the bartender, and I adored him. He's the grumpy, stoic type but warms up to Luca eventually.

This story is FUN and SEXY but not without flaws:

- Far too much info dumping via internal monologue.

- Nearly nonexistent world-building (not much is revealed about the fae/supernatural world - descriptions are sparse and vague; why do all the monsters speak English?).

- ZERO communication between the MCs, which made me want to punch something. I mean, Cair is two hundred years old but keeps dithering about what to tell Luca, when to tell Luca, HOW to tell Luca, and in the end, he doesn't say a word.

What a copout to let Cair off the hook by allowing Tee to explain everything to Luca, who just kind of takes it in stride.

Also, once Luca follows Cair across the veil, the story takes a massive nosedive.

How does Luca get away with being so disrespectful to fae royalty, never mind the way he finds a "loophole" in Cair's contract with his parents:

The book ends with a HEA for Cair and Luca, but several threads are left dangling, including the mystery of Luca's heritage. If you pay attention, you'll figure out who Luca's father is by the halfway mark.

We've already met Tee's mate, and I'm not sure how I feel about that pairing. I hope the second book is a bit more intense and insightful.

A little tidbit about me: whenever I am reading a book I’m really in to, a book I am enjoying, I am the slowest reader known to man. Whenever I turn to the next page in the book, I’ll look at the bottom of the page and if something interesting is happening, I’ll skip to the next page to see what’s going on. Then I will remember that I didn’t read the previous page, so I will have to go back. It is a never ending cycle. That was how I was reading this book. It took me forever to read this book because I was having so much fun reading it. I was obsessed with it. I even had to stop reading it when I wasn’t even 20% through with it because I just HAD TO send the author a message on Instagram and tell her how much I was loving the book, how funny it was, how I think she should leave her partner for me, you know the usual. You know how it is. Anyway.

I was obsessed with everything about this book. The characters, the humor, the snark, the monsters, the fae, the realms, the romance, etc. It was perfect to me, and it was SUCH A GREAT DEBUT BOOK. It blows my mind that first-time authors can just whip out a masterpiece like this. And this book was so detailed. It’s amazing that this story was just sitting in her head waiting for her to write it down. Amazing, truly.

Cair and Luca. Our fae and human. SQUEE!!! I loved them. They were so cute. They made me kick my feet and giggle so much to the point where my throat is hoarse and my ankles are sore. I loved watching them dance around each other trying to ignore their feelings. Luca was holding back because Cair was his boss, and Cair had his own reasons that you will come to know. But that moment when the pining and the tension became too much? When all the control snapped? Good god. It was delicious. All her spicy scenes were so good. They were long and detailed and so so so yummy. I’m having a moment.

Do not get me started on Teighan. I am so in love with that grump. I cannot wait to read his story and see him get the love he deserves. I could not write this review without mentioning that brooding hunk of a man that I know for a fact is a totally sweetheart under all the walls.

Please read this book. If you are a fan of the supernatural, I think you should give this a shot. There was also some things going on in this book, and I would like to point out that I was right at the end of the book. I’m not telling you what I mean by that, but just know that I was right. Boo yah.

“Do you realize how close you are to driving me insane?” he rumbled, low and seductive. “I can hear your heart pounding, can smell your lust. It’s … distracting.”

Well, it was great for a debut :)

I’ve had a hard time in the beginning, nothing was catchy enough. It took me a while to continue. It picked up at 30% though and I liked the consistency. My main concern was this whole book had so many monologues. Sometimes with unnecessary information. I was unlucky and it was a tough moment for me considering I have a really short attention span.

Luca and Cair had insta lust attraction. Unfortunately, I am not a fan. So, the constant dick throbbing and twitching simply bore me. It was a surprise that this book focused more on the porny side. Too lusty for my liking. I can see some people might enjoy it but I couldn’t, especially when Cair claimed he “love” Luca with no other than only sexual attraction he had for him. Imo, the whole sexual attraction overshadowed their love development. I could never understand these books.

I do have to give credits for the sexual tension and the storyline afterwards. It did get exciting. And the second half of the book was entertaining. The dirty talks were also something to look forward to. It was hot at times, I give you that.

It was overall, a decent read. I liked the writing, minus the excessive monologues and I liked the side characters. They had personalities I could indulge in their life. Storyline wise, nothing too memorable, but I might consider reading the next ones for the fun of it. I do think the others would have a lot of potential. Despite some parts of the book did not work for me, this was an impressive debut. Salute.

Thanks GRR for the ARC!

“You belong to me, Luca, body and fucking Soul.”

"I wanted them plunging into my neck, my thighs, my chest; making me bleed; scarring me. Like a tattoo, I wanted his claim printed into my flesh, a clear indication of exactly who I belonged to."

I really enjoyed Cair and can’t believe it is Eryn Hawk’s debut novel! It had many of my favourite tropes bundled up in a wonderful, steamy book.

Luca has always had an affinity for the other realm and has been drawn to the other side. One day he crosses over and, in desperation for a job, ends up at The Veil. There he meets the club’s owner Cair, a fae but not just any fae.

I enjoyed how despite their instant attraction to one another as they fated mates, it still felt like somewhat of a slow burn. They take their time getting to know one another, sorta dancing around one another, falling deeper in love. I really like that aspect. You know Cair wanted to claim him, but at the same time, he had reservations. However, once they do, goodness, the heat. I loved how steamy and hot the sex was between them! I loved every moment of intimacy, the cute pet names, the filthy sex talk, everything! The way Cair desires, loves and wants to take care of Luca made my heart melt. It was also amusing to read Cair defer and literally be wrapped around Luca’s fingers. But, with Luca being charming, cute, and sweet, can you blame him?

The story has a slow start and gradual build-up as Luca and Cair dance around one another. The way it is written is very descriptive, and there are a lot of inner character monologues, which did not bother me. I enjoyed the immersiveness of it.

I also adored Alex, Luca’s friend and Teighan, Cair’s half-brother! I’m so excited for their story, and the fact that there are hints that grumpy Teighan might be a Daddy is making me go crazy! Alex is definitely in need of one. So I’m excited for what is to come!

This story really worked for me. I had a feeling I was going to enjoy this book as it has so many elements I love seeing in MM romances, and I did! Overall, it was a great debut novel with fantastic world-building, characters, and romance. Eryn Hawk is definitely an author who I will be excitedly awaiting their future works.

sometimes i don’t add books to my tbr based on some small detail that’s even remotely annoying and then i forget about them. luckily i have smart friends and taylor told me i needed to read this and damn she was right.

the world building is good, i would’ve liked more facts about the creatures, but it’s definitely good for a debut novel.

the romance. oh, the romance.
the pining? the possessiveness? the heat?
that was very good.
the characters could have been developed a little bit more, but as a debut i am more forgiving about that. it just makes me more excited to read the next book.

this does have a flaw: the resolution was way too easy. i had all this anxiety building about that situation and i’m not saying i want to cry and suffer, but it was anticlimactic.

all in all, it’s very good and if you’re dumb like me and didn’t read this yet, you probably should.

What an enjoyable debut novel from this author.

In a world where monsters have, at least for a long long time, been a part of the human world, there's a part of the city Luca lives in that's just for humans, and a border into the monster side of the city.

Luca has always stayed away, as his mother, now passed, would always tell him to stay away from monsters, even if she never explained to him exactly why she disliked/distrusted them.

But now she's gone, he's 25 and just been fired from his job, and he needs to go out and find one. During one such afternoon, he doesn't realize how far he goes when he walking, too up in his thoughts as no job seems to want to hire him, especially after they hear the reason he was fired from his previous job.

Before he knows it, he's at the border and instead of turning around, he goes over to the monster side. There, he walks for awhile, following a monster, and finds the monster side to be pleasant and nothing like his mother made monsters out to be. In actuality, none of them even gawk at the human in their midst and just go about their days.

Luca is stunned but happy about this, as he's always felt something drawing him to the monster side of the city, although he always ignored it before.

As he walks the city, he ends up outside a building called "The Veil" and when he knocks on the door, he's let in and then meets Cair the owner of the lounge club he's stumbled upon.

There's an instant connection between them, as we later learn it's because they're soulmates, fated mates, what have you.

Luca doesn't know it, even though he feels that something, because he's not Fae, but Cair knows right away.

So there is that insta-love element to this, and things do happen fairly quickly between them. But about 2 months go by before anything even happens between them, as Cair tries to stay away from him for several reasons.

The main one being that in order to go to the human world, Cair struck up a deal with his parents, the King and Queen of Far, a bargain, wherein he could stay in the human world for 100 years, no longer, and then he'd never be able to go back after those 100 years are up.

Also, human can't survive going through the Veil into the Fae world, and Luca is human, so it's seemingly pointless for them to start anything, when Cair will be leaving in several months time.

But of course, there's more to everything than meets the eye, and there is a way for these two to get their HEA.

I'm glad this took the time for these two to get together, as we were able to see how they are together instead of them just getting together immediately. I enjoyed them and their chemistry for that very reason. Once they do have sex, the steam is 🔥🔥🔥. It was very very well done.

This was slow, at times, for me, and I wasn't always riveted to the page, so I did give this a lower rating, as there were times this kind of dragged. Not much was happening at times.

But, once they did, I was glued to the page.

I would definitely give this a read. It is such a strong debut novel and I can't wait for more.

The next book is going to be about Tee, Cair's half-brother who is a total grump to Cair's more happy, laid back attitude, and Alex, who is Luca's best friend. I can't wait, as those two have two totally different personalities to Cair and Luca, so I can't wait to get their story. Hopefully there will be a little less insta-love between them - as we they already do meet in this story, but Tee is just a grump about it and Alex is all about the sexual part of it.

I bet they are soulmates as well, and Tee knows it....but isn't happy about it lol. So a little more resistance, some push and pull, will be so fun to read. Can't wait!

Highly recommend this, it's definitely worth picking up! 🥰

Already can't wait for the next book.

Cair is a fun paranormal romance that features soulmates, high steam, and tender moments. I’ve enjoyed a lot of paranormal books with the soulmate trope recently, so when I saw Cair, I thought I’d give it a try, and I’m glad I did! This one was a lot of fun and quick to read. It didn’t take me more than couple of sittings to get through it. Cair is one of those books that is compulsively readable, even if you’re not 100% sure why. Regardless, I could not put it down!

Though I’m not usually a fan of insta-love, I thought it was done well here. Cair and Luca feel instant attraction to each other, but even so, they keep each other at a distance and try to resist their feelings. Even though their connection was inevitable, I think it added a nice bit of anticipation leading up to their romance. I also love pining in general, so I can definitely appreciate that decision!

The world building for Cair was interesting. They live in a city split into two halves—one for humans and one for monsters. The story begins with Luca traversing into the monstrous side for the first time, where he meets Cair, his life changing forever. Even though the city is split, there’s still a fae realm in addition, which is where the main conflict stemmed from. I thought that concept was interesting, and it’ll be neat to see the city expanded and developed in future books. This was definitely a great set up for a series!

One of my favorite parts of this book was the characters. Luca is what I describe as a cinnamon roll. He cares a lot for his loved ones and just wants everyone to be happy. Cair is more possessive in his feelings, but he’d do anything to protect Luca. I absolutely loved their dynamic. Luca brought out Cair’s softer side, which made for some sweet moments that had me grinning.

I also enjoyed the friendships! Alex is so sarcastic (and a little scarring for poor Luca), and so much fun. His moments with Teighan are the best, and I truly cannot wait for their book. Additionally, Teighan and Luca were a lot of fun too. Teighan is pretty standoffish and doesn’t allow anyone to get close to him, but mr. sunshine Luca is determined to be friends with him, and despite all his reserves, Teighan finds himself charmed. Because how could you not?

Overall, I really enjoyed Cair! It’s an enjoyable paranormal romance that you’ll fly through until you get to the end. If you like the soulmate trope with some steam, some loving moments, and a bit of snark, you’ll definitely like Cair!

Thank you to Gay Romance Reviews for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

"It was like taking in a lungful of air after being under the waves for far too long."

So....I always judge books by their covers and sometimes I am sorely disappointed. BUT NOT THIS TIME! Cair by debut author Eryn Hawk totally lived up to the hype of its glorious cover and I absolutely loved it!

This is a paranormal (fae/human) MM urban fantasy romance, set in parallel worlds that live side by side across a veil. Humans can't travel into the fae realm but both can live together inbetween the worlds. Cair Haryk is a Prince of the fae and his time in the mortal lands is limited.

Luca Elliot has always been drawn towards the Veiled City and when he finds work in Cair's high-end lounge, he finds himself inextricably drawn towards the huge fae with the killer horns. Turns out that Cair and Luca are soul mates but naturally, the course of love can never run smoothly between different species....

Great world building and complex characters, excellent story lines and lots more to come from the Veiled City with book 2, Teighan, due out on 30 November 2023. Can't wait for Alex and Teighan's story 🖤.

Me: stop reading debut novels

Everyone who suffers through my poor reviews of debut novels: Rin, stop reading debut novels

Me: Oooh look a debut novel! 🤦🏻

By 10% I realized three things: this was going to be internal dialogue heavy, the dialogue that manages to be there is super juvenile, and we’d get very little world building.

This is insta-attraction “he’s my soulmate” right off the bat. But the sex doesn’t happen until 50%.

By 30% I wanted to quit but was curious about the sex. This is PNR. Hot human/monster sex yea?

Nope. Too wordy and bland. May as well have been sex with a human it was so mediocre.

The characters all act and talk like teenage girls, including the big beastly Fae.

And holy internal dialogue, Batman. Like… so much.

The cover is cool though.

2023 has been a Big Ole Bummer for MM releases so far 🥴😩

3 - 3.5 stars!

Cair is the first book in the Veiled City series and features Luca the human and Cair the Fae prince. The world is split between humans and monsters, as well as a realm where Cair is from. Luca, down on his luck, finds himself on the monster side one day looking for a job and meets Cair. This meeting changes both of their lives.

Cair immediately recognizes Luca as his fated mate even though Luca doesn't realize the connection they share. Luca only feels that there is an intense connection between the two of them that he can't explain and he wants more. But Cair has secrets that he hasn't shared with Luca and is under the impression that they will never be able to be together. Luca wants Cair but feels like they're heading for heartbreak.

When everything implodes, will Cair and Luca fight for their love?

This was well written with a unique world but it suffered from insta-love. I wish their push and pull had been dragged out a little more and their relationship a little deeper. Cair was dominant in all the ways I love but Luca was a little too soft and submissive for my liking. However, they were very cute together and the secondary characters were fantastic.

“You belong to me, Luca, body and fucking soul.”

“I’m yours,” Luca gasped. “I’ve always been yours.”

Overall, this was sweet and steamy with a dash of angst that kept me on my toes and I will definitely continue this series. I am looking forward to the next book!

“Only I get to watch you fall apart, Luca. No one else will ever know how your mouth gapes and eyes roll when you come. No one else will ever see your back arch as your tight little hole opens up for my cock.”

3⭐️

I don’t know what I was expecting when I read this book, but it wasn’t this. I bought it on sale last year, and I finally got around to it. It was less whimsical than I thought it would be, which is fine — more of a “fae in modern times with some magic” kind of deal. That could have worked, but this book lost me when it turned out to be about one guy who’s a fated mate with a fae, and how they basically just get to know each other, fuck, fuck some more, and then it ends.

It felt like nothing really happened. We learned some lore, but not a lot, and it all came off a little shallow. Given the amount of lore slipped in, I feel like it needed to either go deeper and really explore it, or just leave it vague and let us roll with “that’s just how this world works.”

This book was also plain horny. Like, my dudes are in heat for each other. They held off for a while, but then it went full 100x speed — suddenly they’re together, fucking constantly, and in love. I get the soulmate/true mate angle, blah blah blah, but the build-up was weak. And everything after they got together felt rushed, like the author just wanted it wrapped up once the sex happened. The ending was anticlimactic and boring, and it really put a damper on the whole book.

Overall, it’s a no-brains-needed fae sex book. If you want something you don’t have to think too much or feel too much about, it’s fine. But it’s far from something I’d read again. A sex-driven book about fae and a nightclub had a lot of potential, but it didn’t live up to what I was hoping for.

Overall Opinion
Holy smokes, this book was GOOD!! I was completely hooked from the very first sentence and shocked me with the fact it's the authors debut novel. It was so well written, with both great world building and character development , not just with the MCs but also the side characters as well. Cair and Luca from the beginning were a force to reckon with, and the tension between them was off the charts. It was slow burning but still crazy hot, but it was wonderful getting to witness their relationship grow as well as the intimacy between them. The plot was hooking, with getting to know the story behind the Fae and Human worlds, and creating a world in which many stories could take place. The writing style was smooth and flowed perfectly, and left me aching for the next book instantly. Overall this was such a wonderful book that I will definitely be adding to my favourites list, and I cannot wait for what the future holds for the Veiled City series!

This story didn't work for me at all. The beginning was fine... maybe a little slow, but interesting enough to keep me reading. As the story progressed, however, I found myself becoming less and less invested. The scenes felt unnecessarily long, there was too much inner monologue, Cair wasn't as interesting as I thought he'd be, nor was he really present for the first half of the story, and that throne room scene toward the end felt completely unnatural, more like a performance taking place on stage than a real life conversation. Total disappointment. 1.5 stars

This world intrigued me. I enjoyed the setup. I enjoyed the Devil/fae adaptation of the fated mates thing. I was set up to enjoy this debut!

But… This kind of fell apart for me. The characters felt caricaturized, the scenes and dialogue were super forced. And as I kept reading, I found myself less and less invested due to some spoilers in how plot points were revealed/dragged out.

This would have been a banger of a novella because it would have trimmed the fat and left us with the good hook and the good time? I don’t know.

I like the idea of the pairing for the second book so we will see if I try that one out too to see if this book was just a bunch of debut vibes and it improves over the series.

Audiobook DNF @ 2 hour mark?

I’m going to have to switch to book because I can’t stand Parker Douglass’s narration. He voices Luca and it’s just not working for me at all. I wish Nick J Russo would’ve just voiced the whole thing. So this is yet another audiobook that I’ll probably come back to in book form at some point but I need my ears to stop hearing this narrator before that can happen.

Well, my reading has been shit lately. It's been very hard for anything to keep my attention for more than a few chapters. While this took me a while to read—life getting in the way—I was eager to get back to it any minute I could.

My only niggles would be there seemed to be a lot of internal monologues and things left undone. I'm sure they'll come out in future books, but I kind of like things settled before moving on to another couple. Another niggle was once they got together, I sort of started skipping some of the sex scenes. It's definitely just a ME thing. They weren't excessive necessarily, but I just preferred more time with them together without it. But oh man...the desk scene? 🥵🔥🔥

I can't wait for the next one, though! Teighan!

OK Well! Hello to this amazing book and an amazing debut from Eryn Hawk! Seriously, I have read some of my new top favorites this year from debut authors, I love that so much. And sign me up for the next one because I am very much here for the duration lol

Cair is the first book in a brand new series full of SO MUCH potential, I can't wait to learn more about this world. They are ruled by the fae, but there are all sorts of paranormal and fantasy creatures living among the humans. I absolutely love the world building in this one, setting the stage for plenty more stories to tell.

Luca has always felt drawn to the border that separates the human world from the paranormal, and is able to land himself a job working at a bar called The Veil, which is owned by Cair. Who is quite yum, badass - and totally smitten with Luca. He just melts whenever Luca is around. What Luca doesn't know is that he is Cair's true soulmate. However, Cair has limited time left in the human realm thanks to a deal with his parents.

I absolutely loved this world that Luca stumbles into. And I loved him with Cair. While Cair initially tried to resist Luca, no one could be resistant to this adorable, charming, sweet man. Luca even wins over the major grump Teeghan (who OMG I can't wait for his story!!)

There is such a lovely build up to Cair and Luca getting to know each other, falling for each other and becoming intimate, and I loved every minute of it. And once these two are together - *fans self*

I completely enjoyed this one and I can't wait for the next book, and hopefully many more, in this series! Get this author on your radar folks, I think this will be someone to watch out for in 2023.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

reread oct/23

Still a solid 4.5 stars. I decided to reread because Teighan's book was just released, and I wanted the story fresh on my mind. It did not disappoint. The first time you read a book is magical, yeah, we know, but there is something to be said about the second, and the third, and the fourth time. They have their own magic as well, and it is what I felt reading this. This time around I found the story well paced. I think it felt rushed because we don't get a lot of time in the Fae realm, but there's a reason for that. The romance, though, is still finger licking good, my people.

4.5 ⭐️ to this absolute gem of a book. Cair and Luca’s story is sweet, fun and funny, albeit a little rushed. I could easily read more about them (and I hope we see bits and pieces of them on the next book, which will focus on Cair’s brother).

Just a bit boring. Nothing wrong with it, really, but it didn’t hold my attention & I don’t believe I’ll be visiting the rest of this series, nor this author again.

Thank you to GRR for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book by Eryn Hawk, but it will not be my last.

Initially, I requested this one because of the cover. Then I read the blurb and was very intrigued. And then I read the book. While the plot was predictable and sort of one note, the way that Hawk writes her characters is so good. And her spicy scenes? WHEW. Have a full water bottle nearby and maybe some ice because you will be burning up.

Honestly, this book had some of the best spicy scenes I've read in a long time and I actually can't wait to get into the second book. Alex is such a character and I need his HEA.

I just love it when taking a chance on a new author pays off and the first book in the Veiled City series by Eryn Hawk did that in spades. It had everything I enjoy in a good paranormal romance. Intriguing wordbuilding, a slow-ish burn giving way to plenty of possessive kindle melting steam, and a bit of sarcasm to top it all off. Bonus points for fated mates because that is total trope kryptonite for me. I loved how the stoic and cold Cair would utterly melt when his attention was on Luca. That's not to say he became a total pushover for his soulmate. Cair made it perfectly clear that he even when it didn't appear so, he was still the one in charge. His possessiveness and the savage way he took Luca apart piece by piece was just delicious. It broke my heart knowing that Cair was on borrowed time and would eventually have to say goodbye to the human he had fallen for.

"You deserve a better life than I can offer."

Luca may be a weak human compared to the supernaturals surrounding him at his new job at Cair's bar, but he made up for it in personality and determination. He was sweet and it didn't take him long to charm everyone around him. Even Teighan, Cair's permascowly brother, couldn't resist liking Luca, although he took longer than most to warm up. The romantic angst factor wasn't zero, but the book had a mild amount if I had to put a quantifier. It was much more focused on the swoon and dirty deeds which you will not hear me complain about one iota. I was so happy how everything turned out in the end for the couple.

"I felt like I was home.

Honorary mention goes to Luca's bestie Alex. He's a man after my own heart with his total lack of filter and cocky attitude. We get a sneak peek of book 2 which will be about Alex and Teighan and is already up on the Zon for pre-order. Boy that grouchy fae is gunna have his hands full when it comes to Alex. There were also some hints layered in Cair which have me convinced Teighan might just be a Daddy, and I don't mean the kind who has kids 😉. I can't wait to find out if I'm right!

Somehow I missed the memo that this was a debut book. It wasn't until I went looking for other books that I realised it was a first. That in itself is a good sign, I didn't pick up on any hints that this was a first book - it flowed well, didn't have any obvious continuity errors, and the rhythm of the story was maintained - I didn't feel it drag or rush at any particular point.

I don't mind insta love when it's well written. Plus, there is leeway given when it's a fated mates scenario. In this instance it was both, it was was written in a way that I could believe without squinting and turning my head sideways, and it was fated mates. So for me, the insta love wasn't a problem at all.

Although I'd guessed part of the puzzle early on, it was still fun to watch all the characters scramble, and the story itself kept me engaged and flipping the pages.

I really enjoyed all the characters, and I'm looking forward to the next book with the 'grumpiest grump to ever grump' and a character that is Mr Sunshine personified. It will be interesting. I'm also really happy to read that Luca and Cair will still be popping up as secondary characters. I'm not ready to let them go yet.

Overall, I really enjoyed my first experience with this author, and I can't wait for book 2!

If you enjoy stories with fae (and other beasties), I highly recommend it.

I’ve seen this author around and now that I’m really liking paranormal I thought I’d give them a try. So glad I did because I absolutely loved this story. It was such a fun take on soulmates and even though it had instalove they didn’t act on it right away so we got to know the characters before they became involved which I really liked!

Luca was an amazing character. I loved how open and fun and fierce he was! Cair was an awesome fae and I loved how much he wanted to take care of Luca and how he could go a little overboard but Luca was there to keep him in check!

I loved the worlds and the fae bargain and how the story ended. There was no epilogue but I’m so excited to know a novella is coming out in the future with more about these characters and I can’t wait!! Also super excited for Teighan and Alex’s story. It’s going to be an awesome one I’m sure of it!

Cair and Luca sitting under a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love. Than comes marriage. Then comes Luca going to the nursery...cause a green thumb he doesn't have.

Such a lovely isekai. Except while job hunting Luca walks into a fae bubble. There he finds Cair and Teighan, his half brother. On the spot Luca ask for a bartender position. With love at first sight. How can Cair say, "no."

This is a lovely read, with a twist ending. Boy was it down to the wire. I enjoyed it all.
