Prisoner 302

Rate this book
Laisenia Qarase was Fiji's Prime Minister in 2000-2006. In his own words, he tells of his rise from village obscurity to public service, from bank management to the high office of Prime Ministership.

After two election wins, his SDL Government was subsequently couped in 2006 - a crisis that led to Qarase's eventual imprisonment as PRISONER 302 in 2012 for 243 days. Here, he tells us why, and what impact that politically-contrived fall from grace had on him and his family personally, socially, financially and politically. Laisenia Qarase writes clearly with authority, humility and deep authenticity of the one who has 'been there'.

This is a book which will inspire, and from which there is much to learn.

Starting this book was the beginning of what can only be described a rollercoaster ride of an election here in Fiji!

I wasn't in Fiji during the 2000 or 2006 Coups. So this book certainly provided some insights into what was happening behind the scenes during these times and the events that led up to them.

Quite enjoyable!

As a Fijian who moved away at a young age right after the Speight coup, this was so great to read. Painful as some of the details were, it helped me realize just how bad things were at that time. It was unfortunate that Mr Qarase didn’t live to see the day his enemies finally lost control.

My only gripe with the book is that it is quite a lengthy read, and there were a lot of small details that I thought the book can do without.

Ultimately, I think this is a must read for any Fijian. It’s a reminder of some of our darkest times, with the hope that our coup-filled history is now behind us for good

A comprehensive account of the events pre and post 2006 coup in Fiji. Enjoyed reading the book as a part of Fijis history. Disliked the sections where the writer condemned his opponents.
