Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 11 (My Kindle Review)

The gang’s Kyoto trip has come to a satisfying and successful end, so it’s back home to their usual fun antics that includes bean-throwing and Valentine’s Day chocolates. One of the bonus chapters also gives us a closer look at the missing scarf story. A (100%/Outstanding)

The aftermath of the school trip begins on the journey home in a shocking display of everything this story does well. Then it’s time to throw beans and make chocolates, but the past decides to not be quite as in the past as it originally seemed…

That’s more like it. If the school trip was a bit less than my standard for the series, it comes roaring back to life with this volume. A typical ‘thoughtful reflection on how far I’ve come’ chapter for Izumi turns into a delightfully charming moment of hormones running wild right from the get-ho.

Which itself makes for some very awkward, yet delightfully sweet, fallout. The way Shikimori and Izumi’s relationship has been portrayed has been a consistently strong aspect of this manga and when it’s on point it is on point. I’ve noted it before - these two are in love and you can tell it in every way they interact. That doesn’t stop them from being thrown off by one another though, to amusing effect.

Back in school we get the usual hi-jinx, as the class does the ‘throwing beans at an oni’ tradition and it goes very poorly for Izumi, but Shikimori turns out to have come from The Matrix, apparently. There’s also a very fun, if slight, offering about you being your own worst enemy where jealousy is concerned.

That story and the next one, about Valentine’s Day, both have Hachimitsu functioning as some seriously laconic side narration and I wish she’d been doing that throughout the entire series because it’s wonderfully droll.

It says a lot about the work that’s been done with this group that an old saw like ‘somebody is bad at baking’ can become fresh if you like the characters involved. It doesn’t hurt that Hachimitsu’s attitude towards baking is as militant as my own and I may have made similar sentiments to my partner before.

Even the act of giving said chocolate is impressive - Shikimori’s coolness bona fides aren’t constantly on display, but the way she sets up her exchange with Izumi is just oozing with cool girlfriend power. It’s one of the best quiet displays of their chemistry in the book.

But it’s the last section that really brings things back to the dramatic, as a situation that had been resolved with some real talk turns out to have been not so resolved after all. I absolutely loved this because many stories, in general, would never go back to an old plot like this and dust it off for another go.

Here, however, it makes absolutely perfect sense and it’s not hard to see the feelings of the person involved haven’t been overcome or just gone away, much as they’ve tried. It feels so much more real than we often get and I’m very, very excited to see where it goes. It reflects the complicated nature of relationships so much better than you’d think, and with a simplicity that I found quite elegant.

5 stars - very much a series I have no chill for, this got everything right that it needed to and was both believable and had great character work. And even then it still managed to surprise me with some of the paths it took. That’s a perfect manga in my book.

Hachimitsu is officially best girl for scolding Nekozaki and Shikimori for winging their respective baking recipes. Seriously folks, cooking and baking are NOT the same thing, you can't just guess the measurements and hope that it works out! Thankfully, Hachimitsu is a baking master and helped out, I love her so much.

Also, Shikimori and Izumi being weepy-eyed messes after Izumi kisses her was so fucking funny and adorable! While their interactions can be a bit repetitive, moments like these are what make their relationship fun and keep it fresh.

Looks like there some drama in the forecast and I'm curious to see where its going to go and how its going to be handled. Looking forward to it!

Konnichiwa to all, readers 🌸

Today I bring you the review of the eleventh volume of "Shikimori Is More Than Just a Pretty Face." With that said, let's begin:

The volume begins with the train ride home. With their classmates asleep, the couple discusses the success of Izumi's organization, and Izumi expresses her happiness. Driven by his feelings, he tries to kiss her, but fails.

Back home, the tension over their non-consummation leaves them unable to eat or react, leading them to a difficult date filled with pent-up tension.

The epilogue of the school trip closes with a tender scene at a restaurant, where they reminisce about their first days as friends.

In the main chapters, the action returns to Izumi's bad luck at the Oni Gokko, where she expels ogres with broad beans. Shikimori once again excels at games and sports.

In a transitional story, the computer lab activities are interrupted by Izumi's bad luck, shifting the plot to focus on her interactions with her classmates.

In the final third, the action moves forward after Valentine's Day, with Shikimori and Nekozaki preparing homemade chocolates. A flashback reveals that Izumi gave her some he made, inspiring her to make them.

The kitchen scene, full of comical moments, precedes the delivery at school, where, apparently, none of the classmates are left empty-handed.

However, tension builds when Kamiya, who has received many chocolates, meets Shikimori in the library, which is also in charge of Izumi. In the final panels, he seems to be trying to give her a special chocolate to confess his feelings, after asking for a few minutes.

🌸Conclusion: This installment concludes the school trip arc following Izumi's emotional development and opens the door to a delicate situation for Shikimori in her love life.

Rating: 4🌸

It did take them TEN VOLUMES but there finally was some progression in their relationship. Izumi was so cute making chocolate for everyone too. This series is always so light and fun to read.
