BLOOD LIES (“Lies” Mystery Thriller Series Book #5) by Andrew Cunningham is the new book in the “Lies” series featuring Del and Sabrina. I enjoyed listening to the last book in audiobook format and I listened to this one, too. The mystery plot in all the books can be read/listened to as a standalone, but the characters evolve in each and I feel they are more enjoyable in order.

Del Honeycutt has just fully recovered from his and Sabrina Spencer’s last close encounter with killers and alligators. As they are walking down the street, there is a shot and Sabrina falls to the sidewalk. She is rushed to the hospital bleeding from her side and with a serious head wound.

When Sabrina wakes up and they are questioned by the police, they realize that the shot was meant for Del. Then the FBI shows up.

Del and Sabrina find out that there may be a link between the attempt on Del’s life and his father’s murder three years ago. Del is shocked to learn his father had a secret life. As they investigate, the clues lead them into more danger. More people end up dead. Could Del and Sabrina be next?

I enjoy listening to these books. They are entertaining mystery/thrillers with fun characters that I love to follow. Mr. Cunningham writes with a dry wit that can turn into a serious mystery scene and back again. The characters are all quirky and have very distinct voices.

Once again, I enjoyed Mr. Hernandez’s narration. He does a great job of bringing Del and the whole gang to life.

If you are looking for fun and quirky characters in unique and smart mysteries, this is the series for you.

Blood Lies

I always enjoy the mysteries involving Sabrina and Del. There are always things I don't see coming. However, having been born in Fairfield, although I haven't been back there for decades, I wonder what Mr. Cunningham has against it? Lol!

(Audiobook version)

Another great installment for Del and Sabrina!

When Sabrina is shot on a busy street, police suspect a deranged fan. But it soon becomes clear the bullet was meant for Del. The guilt he feels is soon joined by anger then curiosity when it appears the shooting is connected to Del’s murdered father, whom he was estranged from for most of his life.

The pacing is quick but smooth as more attempts are made on Del’s life as he tries to figure out why. He’s being followed by shadowy Chinese men, his homes are bugged, one of his homes is blown up—nearly killing Sabrina and Mo—he has to return to Fairfield… several times and the name of the mysterious John Bruno keeps popping up the deeper Del digs, even connected to his mother.

Though she’s healing from the gunshot wound, Sabrina is plagued with migraines from her head hitting the ground. With Del still recovering from the alligator attack—and subsequent injuries from the continued attempts on his life—the two are not 100%, but it doesn’t stop them from giving their all and being there for each other.

Relationships and interactions are as important as the mystery in the Lies Series, and the author does a good job with each in the story, but for me, the best… and most humorous, is the “friendship” between Del and Jack, who even share a man hug!

Del learns more about his father’s true nature during the investigation than he ever knew—or wanted to know–before his death, and how his selfish motives cost not only his life but could cost Del and Sabrina theirs.

I own digital copies of the Lies Series, but I keep coming back to the audiobooks because of the great narration! The narrator continues to do a great job of characterization without sounding cartoonish or robotic. His delivery of humor, sarcasm, suspense, or backstory is on point and kept me in the story.

While you’re sheltering in place, get to know Del Honeycutt, Sabrina Spencer, and their family of friends. I highly recommend this book and the series.

Enjoy!

Excellent plot

Another good one in the series. Characters are moving along, albeit in bad shape. It was an interesting volume all in all, with quite a bit of tension as events unfold. Very good mystery overall :-)

Blood Lies is #5 in the Lies Series by Andrew Cunningham. This is a series I am re-reading in it's entirety as I enjoyed it very much here and there, but all series are more intense when read consecutively and I am finding that aspect very potent in Andrew Cunningham's works. Blood LIes finds Del and Sebrina back at their place in East Boston, where, on their first day back Sebrina catches a bullet intended for Del as they are leaving their third-floor apartment. The bullet doesn't harm anything vital, but the crack to her head when she hit the sidewalk puts her into the ICU, and Del and Mo are confused as to why Sebrina would be a target. When she regains consciousness, she informs them that the shooter was a lousy shot and the target was obviously Del. Whole 'nother problem - and tied to the murder of Del's father three years ago - but they will find the culprit, and justice, toot sweet.

As usual, a fast-paced, convoluted tale told very well. One I thoroughly enjoyed, and happily recommend to friends and family. This is a series I am thoroughly enjoying re-reading in order in its entirety, even more than I did individually as I acquired them. Available at this time on Kindle Unlimited and up to 7 volumes.

I just finished this book last night and I have to write down what bothers me about it. It seems that there were at least five murders in the book and almost too many attempted murders throughout it. Despite all this criminal chaos it appears that the only people that were really trying to get to the bottom of these incidents were two mystery authors. Where were the police?

Other than detective Marsh who seemed very good at getting other jurisdictions to show up and assist the two authors there seemed to be no police presence or investigations. And once the FBI got their flash drive they were seeking they seemed to disappear from any further investigative activity.

I guess the only people that care or can actually solve a crime appears to be two authors who only need the use of a computer and a couple of friends. It just simply doesn’t work for me and I will not be reading anymore of these books.

Quick read whilst under stay-at-home orders

I’ve read a lot of books recently, and this is another decent but predictable mystery. I was able to read this as a stand-alone, because the author included enough backstory on characters and past events.

An attempted murder turns into an intricate case of spies, industrial espionage, smuggling, blackmail, gun fights, bombs, crimes in multiple police jurisdictions, sexcapades, foreign nationals, and more. It’s as though the author threw in everything except a kitchen sink.

Characters moved between states and towns, but the maneuvering didn’t add to the story, because their flying and/or driving hither and yon weren’t organic to the storyline. The protagonists are charming and likable but weren’t remarkable or unique in any way.

Overall I liked the book enough to finish it, but I prefer crime fiction with a less predictable storyline.

Very interesting and entertaining storyline with multiple crimes revolving around a couple of authors of true crime novels trying to discover why someone is trying to kill them

Spies, millions, murder - what more would you want!

Not only does this book have all of the above, but also likable characters - both primary and secondary - appropriate villains, and a lively plot. All of that plus humor and a bit of romance.

Fascinating!

Loved this whole storyline. Poor Dal didn't know his father from Adam! Positively loved the book from page one to the end. Loved how smart the female author is and gutsy too. Highly recommend this book!

This is my 3rd book by this author and I have enjoyed each. Learning disturbing things about your Father leads to a life and death situation. The mystery breaks down in a way that holds your interest. I found the story to be very entertaining

Wow!

I ripped through the first four "Lies" books, and then took a breath. Read some non-fic, a few heavy novels where I had to look up a word every third page, even three chic-lit books. Came back to find this book, and it was great!
I was so pleased to meet up with my favorite doofus, Del Honeycutt. It was like meeting old friends again, catching up.

Death Came Knocking for Both Del and Sabrina but It Missed Them

In this the final book in the Lies Mystery and Thrilling Series all four characters, namely Sabrina, Del, Mo and Jack faced multiple threats of death in unraveling Del’s father’s crimes and the truth behind his death. Another good light read that was hard to put down.

Sabrina a world famous author with Del, seems they are always investigating some mystery. This time she has been shot, detective asking if she had enemies. Abusive husband who she killed and given prison sentence had brothers, they might. They got the bullet out, gave it to a detective, had a badge, there was no person that name

Could of been better!

Can't believe that guy is still alive. When someone wants you dead that badly. Your usually dead. Don't know why they even brought guns to that house in Fairfield? He takes boxes out to his trunk, his buddy is on the porch and neither one took a gun or rifle with them? The guy shooting from behind the tree., Must be blind! Other than that it was ok.

Too common

This book is a decent mystery with the usual unraveling of the twists and turns of the plot. There are far too many close calls and the characters are too shallow.

It’s hard to believe that we’re five books into this series. At this point, I barely even think of it as a series anymore because Del and Sabrina have become more like old friends. I can always count on them for an entertaining listen. For those who aren’t familiar with The Lies series, each book can stand alone. Andrew Cunningham gives enough backstory so that a new reader won’t be lost, but it’s not so much that a regular of the series will feel like it’s repetitive. However, I have to say that I think they’re even more enjoyable when read in order.
Blood Lies focuses on Del, and he just may get more than he bargained for as he digs into his family’s past. Of course, poor Del can’t catch a break, and he seems to find trouble even when he’s still recuperating from the last mess he was in. This time around, the bullets fly at every turn, and it seems like no one is safe. I think Del is one of the unluckiest reluctant investigators I’ve read, and I absolutely love him to pieces – not as much as Sabrina does, but you get the point. Speaking of Sabrina, she and Del are complete opposites on the surface, but they are so good together. I love the banter between them, and Del’s dry sense of humor is terrific.
I can’t talk about a book in this series without mentioning narrator Greg Hernandez. The inflections and cadence in these books are exactly how I hear Del in my head. To me, Greg Hernandez’s voice for Del is Del. It’s as simple as that, and it works wonderfully. Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone else voicing any of the characters in this series. Del, Sabrina, Jack, and Moe – Hernandez brings them to life for me.
All in all, this fifth book in The Lies series is another great listen in a series of great listens. We get great characters, a fast-paced storyline, some very well-timed twists in an entertaining mystery, plenty of danger, and even a bit of romance as Del and Sabrina’s relationship grows.

This is a captivating murder mystery that moves at a steady pace with a few twists and turns along the way.

Narrator Greg Hernandez does a great job of bringing the characters to life-enhancing the story with unique voices for each. His tone and pace will hold your attention and adds depth to this tantalizing story.

This is the fifth installment in the series but can be read/listened to as a stand-alone. If you are new to the series, the author weaves enough background along the way so that it’s easy to keep up and you’re not lost wondering who is who or what they are talking about.

The flow of the story pulls you in as the author intertwines a tale of spies, murder, and intrigue blended with touches of love and humor. The characters are well developed with qualities readers/listeners can relate to.

This is an entertaining mystery that is perfect for an afternoon of getting lost in a world of secrets and mayhem.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Greg Hernandez. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Very enjoyable read

Another great adventure for Sabrina and Dell. This story drags Dell back into his father's somewhat murky past and whilst no love was lost between the two, what they dig up about his Dad's past makes Dell question everything, including his belief that his father 's murder, at the hands of a jealous husband was deserved.

This adventure brings back both Mo and Jack but to a lesser extent than in previous books. We see Sabrina hospitalised twice, and Mo in critical condition following an explosion.

Bring pursued by FBI, Chinese government and several hit men from other various parties takes it's toll on both Sabrina and Dell, who has barely recovered from the alligator attack from their previous adventure. As with the other stories in the series, the plot is interesting, well thought out and fast paced.

Have enjoyed all the books in this series and hope to see more of Sabrina, Dell, Mo and Jack in the near future.

The continue story of Del and Sabrina they seem to never get out of trouble but creating more from Del father side of the family. He lives a life of not really knowing his father or his father's male side of the family all he knows is what he has read or rumors of a line of idiots and theives. You can not go wrong listening to this serie it is a non stop action of intrigue, murders and meeting realy strange and sometimes screwie characters who the narrator brings to life and you are sitting on the edge of your seat. The books reminds of murder mysteries from the 50's on both TV and radio.
In this audible you find that Del's father murder was more than he thought oh so much more and as soon as he does he get shot at and Sabrina is his and the adventure starts to find out more you must get the audible or book

A rather good read to my happy surprise

After checking some reviews I decided to give this book a shot and even after I realized it wasn't quite what I was looking for it still held my interest. That tells us something. It's fast paced, not loaded with too much confusing activities and the main characters are totally likeable (despite him being descended from a long line of idiots). Plus the "bad guys" are not over the top. Oh and nice to get away from the standard rude, snide, obnoxious aggravating, irritating cops too. One does get tired of that. Will definitely look into more of this author's books.

Is is terrible to say I'm glad to see in the last 2 books of the series that the main characters didn't always walk away harm free every time? It just seemed so unrealistic. Not that I wanted anything to happen to Dell, Mo, Sabrina or any of the other characters you get to know and like. This was a nice completion to the ongoing story about Dell's father and who was following or trying to kill everyone. Nice series that I enjoyed. Great plots and just long enough to make a full story without excessive words that left you bored.

A great read couldn’t and wouldn’t put it down.

The author gets right into the story with the first words of the first chapter. No long detailed explanation of who was who and where was where just story. Thank you mr Cunningham. He holds you in suspense and intrigue through the whole book so you have to keep reading to find out what happens next. It has been awhile since a read a book completely in one day but this book did it for me. Thanks again for a great read.

Compelling thriller series

This is a review of all 5 books in the series. I was binge reading so didn’t stop to review each book. It’s a compelling series that holds your attention to the end with interesting characters that you come to care about. Each book has a similar theme with competing bad parties with different agendas making for complex interwoven plot lines. Each book can be read as a stand alone story, but it adds to the experience by reading them in order.

Things you don’t know can kill you.

Book five of the Lies mystery thriller series starts off with a bang — a gunshot — and continues at that pace for the next 244 pages. More surprising history about his father forces Del and Sabrina to investigate old crimes. Mayhem and danger follow as they try to solve the mystery. Clever plotting and page-turning action make this another satisfying entry in the series.

Entertaining yet somewhat predictable. After reading 5 in the series there are patterns of predictability I’m seeing. Like, being rescued in the nick of time, opposing bad guys and a police lieutenant who seems not to solve anything himself. If not for the hapless Del & clever Sabrina would anything get solved? All that said, the characters are likable and stories are entertaining, just a few leaps of faith are needed.
