'Splintered' is a novel about ordinary people and an exploration of family relationships and how the past can affect the future. The main character is Matt, a twenty-something doctor. His soul is tortured by his memories. We follow Matt and his friends and family, as he tries to make sense of the past and somehow break through the barrier from despair to happiness. Piece by piece, his past is revealed in the novel through flashbacks. When we first meet Matt, the dark secrets from his past are threatening to destroy his blossoming relationship with girlfriend Helena. Can he face his demons and leave the past behind in order to move on?
'Splintered' is the type of book that would appeal to everyone; it deals with betrayal, misunderstandings, adultery, secrets, lies and relationships. There are wonderful insights into the human psyche.
Andrea Howarth-Salazar has a very individual style of writing. The narrative is written more like a film script than a novel. The prose flows nicely.
There are a couple of inconsistencies in the plot and a few typos, but apart from these, very minor distractions, I enjoyed this book.
This is an ambitious first novel, with a very complex storyline. Andrea Howarth-Salazar is definitely a writer to watch for the future. I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

An enjoyable read - a well put together 1st novel by Andrea. The story stays with Matt, the main character, throughout, and leads to the finale where he finally realises he has exorcised his ghosts from the past. All the characters are easy to indetify with in terms of their thoughts, emotions and complexities. The binding forces - whether pulling together, or, discordant, between family and friends and relationships are kinitted well, within the network of the story. Lives up to its theme of redemption where Matt is concerned. Although Matt is the central focus I am looking forward to the sequel to this, in how it is taken forward with Christian who has been an enigma for me ....

A friend from mymodernmet recommended this book. I have read part one already. The dialogue is superb; the characters literally jump out of the story alive as multi-dimensional people. Set in the present time and without an over pretentious plot, one of the best contemporary novels I have read recently. It actually reads as a thriller; I couldn't wait to discover Matt's dark secrets. I can't wait to know how it ends. Edward Cullen has found a contender in Matt Wetherington; Christian would be as lovable if he was not so self-centred. Anyone else reading this novel?

I feel this book was a really good first book. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and felt that the book was a realistic story that people would be able to relate to in todays world.
I would definately buy this book when it is released in the uk to read again and will certainly buy future books written by Andrea.

Well Done Andrea look forward to the next one!!

I better not say anything as I wrote the novel ;-)

I hope you enjoy reading it as much I enjoyed writing it.

PS. Below a reading guide I hope will help enhance your reading experience!

Is love enough to heal a splintered soul? Could Matt have found peace without Helena? Who is more instrumental in helping Matt redeem himself – Christian or Helena? Why does Helena begin to feel attracted to Christian? How does Christian become more sympathetic as a character in the second part of the story? We are never certain in the novel how Diane dies. What do you think? Which incident from Matt’s past plunges him into despair? Is it any one thing in particular or the combination of everything? Matt and Christian look very similar. How does this influence their relationship and our perception of them? What is the significance of the prologue, The Flower Girl, and the chicle boy incident? Which other symbols are important in the novel? How do the incidents in the flashbacks to Provence deepen our understanding of the relationship of Matt and Christian? Matt feels like he was always destined to meet Helena. Are there any hints at this in the novel? Which is the main turning point in the novel for Matt? How significant is Matt’s career as an A&E doctor? Whose stories are unresolved at the end of the novel? How significant is the epilogue and how does it link to the rest of the story?
