Emily Ann Thurston owns Eagle Crossing, a wildlife rescue facility, where she raises and cares for orphaned and injured eagles. Before Kate has a chance to relax and breathe the fresh pine-scented air of the Pacific Northwest, trouble begins. A family gathering and celebration turns tragic. Soon three people are murdered. Before Kate can untangle the mess, she meets the killer face-to-face, and they both realize she is the only one who stands in the way of the killer's freedom and arrest.

Growing up in West, Texas during the 1950s, my average-American parents and the nuns at St. Mary’s School instilled in me“good girl” values, leaving an indelible stamp on my character. For respite from this engrainment, I began writing my Sydney Lockhart Mystery Series—set in historic hotels during the fifties, of course—to say and do things I would “never try at home.”

I write the Kate Caraway Animal-Rights Mystery Series, which is available in bookstores, on Amazon, and Barnes and Noble online.

I also write the Classic Triviography Mystery Series. My Alfred Hitchcock and Sherlock Holmes trivia books were finalists for the 2013 EPIC Award in nonfiction.

When not writing, I spend much of my time with my “pilot,” traveling the country’s back roads and byways; bird-watching; and looking for new locales for my mysteries. It was my passion for birds that led to The Man Who Saved the Whooping Crane: The Robert Porter Allen Story (University Press of Florida 2012).

When too road weary, I split time between my two favorite places, the Pacific Northwest and the Texas Coast. It’s tough though, having been born with the original sin of wanderlust. Nonetheless, my laptop is nicely stowed in my bag, and a bird reference book and binoculars are always on the front seat.

After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in physical anthropology, I taught middle-school science for 25 years. I was a staff writer for AustinFit magazine from 1997-2002. My articles have appeared in Cape Cod Life, Marco Polo, Agatha Christie Chronicle, Texas Now, and Home Cooking Magazine. I am an occasional contributor to Texas Highways magazine.

On a different note, while working as the marketing director for Cave Art Press, my 5-Minute Writings Tips blog posts were published in book form called Do You Have a Catharsis Handy: Five-Minute Writing Tips?

Animal-rights activist Kate Caraway, and her husband, Jack Rider, go to Lopez Island for a much-needed vacation and a long-awaited stay with Kate's childhood friend. Emily Ann Thurston owns Eagle Crossing, a wildlife rescue facility, where she cares for orphaned and injured eagles in the Pacific Northwest.

PROS: In EAGLE CROSSING, there are a couple of murders and a couple of attempted murders, so you definitely get your money's worth! There are also a few red herrings thrown in so you don't know who "done it" until the very end.

CONS: There were a couple of parts that way too much of "he said, she said, he said" but the part that was most disappointing for me was not enough was written about the wildlife rescue except for feeding times. And same for the setting of the Pacific Northwest. I would have loved to learn a little bit about both in the course of the investigation.

I love the Sydney Lockhart mysteries by Kathleen Kaska but I had not read the Kate Caraway mysteries. Beginning the series on book 3 was not a problem I didn't feel like I'd joined a book in the middle. Animal activist Kate and her husband Jack go to Lopez Island to visit Kate's long time friend who quickly winds up dead. Kate does not believe her death was an accident or suicide and races to find the murderer before more tragedy ensues.
Eagle Crossing was a wonderfully written mystery that kept me guessing until the reveal of the murderer. The characters are complex yet relatable. I loved the humor as well. I look forward to continuing this series.

This is an incredible animal rights activist mystery with a great cast of characters and a story that I knew I wouldn't be able to put down as soon as I started reading. I loved Kate Caraway and enjoyed her dynamic with the other characters and felt like I was right beside her through this twisty, page-turner mystery. Ms. Kaska has given us another winner in this series and I look forward to more about Kate, her husband Jack and their dog Kenya. I received an advance reader copy of Eagle Crossing and am voluntarily leaving my review.

A very good mystery. Loved Kate and Jack. All they wanted was a relaxing vacation visiting a friend. What they got was murder and attempted murder. Kate's long-time friend invited them to spend two weeks with her at her wildlife rescue facility. When Kate finds her friend dead at the bottom of a cliff, she is shaken and resolves to find her killer. There is some speculation that she committed suicide or that a neighbor killed her. When the neighbor is found dead, Kate is sure that it has to be one of the family, but they all seemed to have alibis. While Kate is out for a walk, someone tries to push her off of a cliff. That can't be a coincidence. Can they find the killer before anyone else is murdered?

This is the third book in this series; I haven’t read the first two books yet, but I added them to my wishlist since I really enjoyed this one. This stands alone well; I didn’t know if the animal-rights aspect would be too preachy, but it’s really not. I learned a lot and also gained even more admiration for people who devote themselves to saving animals. The mystery itself was very good and just difficult enough to solve to make it fun. I especially liked the main characters, and the setting was great too. I can definitely recommend this book; I was provided a copy, but these opinions are my own.

Kaska gives us the third in her Kate Caraway Animal Rights Series. Jack and Kate are heading west from Chicago to visit her old friend, Emily Ann Thurstan. She owns a large home with an animal sanctuary on her property on Lopez Island. Eagle Crossing was known to animal rights activists for saving wild animals, birds, and reptiles. Sometimes they were rescued, healed, then let go into the wild. Upon their arrival outside the San Juan Islands they waited in line for the ferry to take them to Emily Ann’s homeland.
Caraway’s character is one who works and cares for wild animals in Africa as well as in the Chicago area. She was thrilled to visit her friend and help work with the sanctuary residents at Eagles Crossing. Jack and Kate knew that others would be staying at the preserve. Emily Ann’s son, Evan and daughter Laura would be visiting with their families as well. When all arrived it was more than awkward. The young adults were less than happy with their mother’s wishes to enlarge the compound and expand with more animals. They felt it was dangerous and wanted no part of it.
Eagle Crossing was published on October 5, 2022 by Wild Rose Press. I appreciate their allowing me to read Kaska’s latest in her series via NetGalley. Not reading the first two books in the series, one might think it would be a struggle to follow her plot. Not so, Kathleen Kaska gives us an excellent suspense novel that can be read as a stand-alone. Although having read her work I intend to read Run Dog Run and A Two Horse Town the first two in her Animal Rights Mystery series. Eagle Crossing is a page turner with interesting plot twists that keep the reader uncertain of what might happen next. Enjoy this one.

I enjoyed reading Eagle Crossing. Having been raised in the northwest, I was familiar with many of the locations mentioned throughout the narrative. Kathleen excels in establishing the setting and introducing characters that the reader instinctively begins to question. Subsequently, they become victims. What happens next? It transforms into an essential read to discover whether Kate Caraway can uncover the identity of the perpetrator. This book is undoubtedly a must-read for enthusiasts of cozy mysteries.
