Practicing Mindfulness by Kim Larkins, is the perfect activity book for adults and children to be guided through understanding and working on emotions and feelings. Through carefully constructed chapters, cute illustrations and a range of fun and interesting activities, this book has everything needed to work through mindfulness and teach lessons about; gratitude, body sensations and about being in the present moment. It helps children delve deep into their inner thoughts and feelings and through a range of activities express themselves. A very clever and entertaining activity book, which I will definitely be going through with my son.

What a delightful book with the nicest illustrations!! Emma Lou and friends really explain what mindfulness is and how to go about it!! What I really liked is there are sections where the children have to draw and answer questions!! This book will be an asset to any child's library. Parents--you will enjoy it as much as your children do.

Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo is back with another enticing children’s book – this time it is all about the practice of mindfulness. Now I have to admit as an adult I struggle with wrapping my head around what mindfulness actually is, so this book was a perfect read for me as well! Aimed at children with delightful characters Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo and her friends Pearl and Gigi the Gentle Ginormous Giraffe will take you on a journey through what mindfulness is in a way that children (and adults) will understand.

This is a interactive book which encourages children to answer questions or draw a picture at the end of each chapter, which makes this a great way to engage children.

In “Practicing Mindfulness: Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo’s Activity and Coloring Book for Kids,” author Kim Larkins explains to children that mindfulness is all about paying attention to the present moment and to being aware of what is happening around them during that time. She teaches this mindset through offering an entire activity book with different exercises that will promote mindfulness within children. From a breathing exercise to paying attention to the noises around the child at the time they’re doing the exercises – one of my favorite activities is listing the things the child is grateful for. Every exercise is fun and has a benefiting purpose for the child.

My first thought about this activity book was who better to write this book than a Licensed Social Worker who has dedicated the past thirty years to working with children and families in the mental health and human services field? Larkins is the perfect person to pen a book dedicated to offering activities that can only benefit the well-being of children.

As I turned the pages, I realized I’ve never seen such a well thought out activity book that actually had the children learning from the variety of activities offered. Each activity involves children taking the time to not only get to know themselves better, but also to make them aware of things beyond themselves. I loved the idea of Ms. Larkins going beyond just giving common activities such as drawing, word searches and even coloring pages for the children to do. Instead, she asks them to step out of the box and think beyond just having mindless fun.

I also love that this activity book is based around characters from her ongoing book series for adults, “Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo.” The characters are adorable and children will easily fall in love with them as they follow along in her activity books. If I may be so bold to say I think this book would make a wonderful addition to a school curriculum and it fits perfectly within the suggested ages of 7-11. I highly recommend “Practicing Mindfulness: Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo’s Activity and Coloring Book for Kids,” for parents and teachers to offer to the children in their lives. Well done, Ms. Larkins!

Practicing Mindfulness starts with defining what mindfulness is: paying attention to what is going on right now. There are many ways to practice mindfulness. Focusing on your breathing, listening to the sounds around you, and feeling and understanding your body’s sensations are all explained here in a way children can understand. Best of all, it teaches about using mindfulness to be a kind and caring person.

This fun book teaches about mindfulness not only by explaining, but by having the child interact. After each chapter, there’s space for a picture or to answer a question. There are pictures throughout the book that can be colored. At the end, there are games such as wordsearch or a maze. The games focus on the contents of the book.

The characters are great too! The main characters are Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo, Pearl, and Gigi the Gentle Ginormous Giraffe. What kid won’t love those names? And they have many friends with cool names too.

Practicing Mindfulness would be a great addition to a child’s library. I may have to purchase a copy for my grandkids when they get a little older. They’re not quite old enough for these concepts yet.

This one is a must have for any young child, especially the way mental health is playing such a high role in the younger generation. On top of which, the characters are absolutely delightful, and the activities are really fun too.

The author explains mindfulness, staying in the present, and focusing on yourself, your feelings, and sensations, in small easy steps that a child can understand, and will want to learn more about. As well as the importance of being kind and caring towards yourself and others. My favourite section was filling in the sun rays and dancing like nobody is watching ;-)

I also found this to be a great conversation starter for parents and carers if they wanted it to be.

I would definitely recommend this for a fun, feel good factor book for a child that also benefits their thoughts and perspectives.

I have read and reviewed other books with Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo in them. This one really caught my eye because I have a grandchild who has had a traumatic upbringing. Sometimes he gets frustrated and doesn't know how to deal with his frustration. A lot of this is just being a boy but some comes from his background. He joined my family as a foster child. His family life was not spectacular. I cannot wait to send this book - maybe more than one copy - on to him. I am sure his parents will love the book also. I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Simple and helpful

A great book for helping younger children who like picture books (or to have stories read to them). liked this book for its simple style. It's like a storybook with a few simple activities.
