Kijin Gentosho. I really like the premise and the vibe of this story, it was just a really heavy first step. It definitely felt like an everything all at once kind of situation but I found a lot of things to hold onto through the volume such as the characters and the overall mystery and direction of the story. I will definitely be checking out volume 2!
Wow! That was WAYYYY more interesting than I expected it to be with such a generic title. love me a good historical demon slayer manga and this checks all the boxes! will be reading more
At 18 years old, Jinta has dedicated his life to serving as the trusted warrior of Kadono village and, more importantly, the priestess of the Itsukihime shrine.
The priestess, Jinta’s childhood friend Shirayuki, took him and his younger sister, Suzune, in when they had run away from their abusive home. The shrine accepted the two of them, despite Suzune’s oddness, and raised them alongside the priestess and shrine guardians’ families.
The shrine is Jinta’s home.
Now, he protects the village and shrine from demons who seek to kill the priestess and absorb her powers, stealing any relics along the way. Since the death of Shirayuki’s mother and father—the former high priestess and shrine warrior—at the hands of demons, attacks have become more frequent.
When Jinta faces off against a powerful demon who questions the purpose of his sword wielding, will he be able to stand firm in his convictions? Or, will Jinta have to face something far worse than any demon?
So, I’m really enjoying this story.
Though historical fiction is not my forte, I appreciate stories that approach the genre from a different angle, incorporating supernatural or magical elements. Further, this story has some distinctive pacing. The is clearly a series that has an outline; it’s hitting its plot points at a steady, logical clip.
Now, does this kind of storytelling sometimes sacrifice opportunities to incorporate dynamic action sequences? Yes—but, it does do it in the interest of making the action sequences that do occur pay off more than they would otherwise.
Anyway, in addition to the plot, I really appreciate our collection of main characters. Jinta is incredibly compelling from the jump—sincere and loyal, steadfast and strong. Our female characters are also three-dimensional, with their own ambitions and distinctive personalities. I appreciate Shirayuki’s dignity and grace even in the face of heartbreak; she’s loyal so much it hurts.
I definitely recommend this series to seinen fans but, also, to fans of historical fiction and adjacent genres. This story is shaping up to be very compelling~
All I can say is wow! I was pleasantly surprised at how good the story was. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I found it so interesting and now I can't wait to read the next volume in the series!
It reminded me a little bit of Demon Slayer, in the sense that the little sister may be a demon (you see there's something, but they don't tell us just yet), and the big brother hunts demons.
It's an interesting premise, as Jinta (the big brother) is a guardian of the shrine maiden, so he goes demon hunting to protect her and the village. The story has depth and takes place in two time periods (at least in this volume). It starts in February 2009 and then goes back in time to the year 1840. The prologue had me so intrigued and I wanted to know what was the link between the two characters, as there's a tiny twist.
I don't want to say too much to accidently spoil anything, but I do recommend this volume!
When two would be childhood sweethearts have their destinies bound to the village amidst demon attacks and village politics. Throw into that a child who does not seem to age and hides a demonic eye behind bandages, simple moments of silly fun, new advanced demons, and potential trouble on the horizon and you get an interesting volume like this volume with interesting art bringing the light novel (which I hope read sometime) to life.
If you are interested in seeing how a swordsman begins a fateful journey beyond what a human normally could then it all begins here. Of course being an intro volume there is a lot to cover but one thing that does not get explained is how the the same character appears to appear in the present day happens yet starts his journey long ago (think possibilities like immortality, actual timey whimey Doctor Who type journey, and reincarnation with intact memories/skills as possibilities.)
Short Review: A nice read if you enjoy samurai-esque stories with some cool combat and an interesting story. This series is similar to Demon Slayer in some ways!
This series popped up as an ad on a website I was on the other day and I decided "What the heck? Let's give it a shot!". I was pleasantly surprised! This series follows the idea of this samurai sworn to protect the priestess of a shrine. While this manga is a good read, I did find it predicable in moments, but I have been reading manga close to this genre for awhile so it might just be from experience.
Overall, a good read and I will be picking up volume 2!!
I'm just whelmed. It wasn't bad, but it isn't particularily gripping so far; the story is basic, the characters are the usual shonen cast (good, honorable male protagonist with sad past, dutiful love interest who can't be with him, endearing child who needs protection). The art is gorgeous though, very atmospheric. I'm definitely giving book 2 a shot, it's got potential and the story seems to be kicking in near the end of this first volume.
Love the art style and cute, compelling story. Cute might actually be the wrong word for it, but there were sweet, humanizing and characterizing scenes that were super well done. A lot of the time I feel like action-based fantasy mangas struggle balancing story with all the fight scenes and lose their footing in terms of character and plot, but this is so well done!! Loved the pacing and plot seems great so far.
This was so enticing! I don’t usually read many seinen or shonen series, but this had everything I want in a series - main characters with personal morals and sense of duty, tragic love and intense mystery involving the sister and main protagonist! A must read for me, I’ll definitely be picking the next volumes!
Protecting a shine and its priestess is Jinta, the main character warrior's job in this period manga set in the Endo period.
He encounters demons in the wood in order to protect the village, the shrine, and the girl.
The action sequences work well as does the introduction of all of the main players of the series including the demons that are very demon-like! A cool quest story.
Really good setup! I feel this was laid out super well, good direction, a interesting concept, loved the art style! Im excited to read the next one. Though I do wish they had a glossary or a story recap on the first page, since this story seems to span a few centuries and time periods I feel it would help tremendously!
I really love Jinta and his motivations and actions. He is honorable in all of his relationships and his duties, a very respectable character. I also like how the tone is very clearly portrayed through the art, its fun and adds another layer to the storytelling and mood. The story itself is very interesting and I can't wait to read the rest. Much love.
This is an exposition heavy volume, which I guess stands to reason. Heavy on the historical trappings, but there's also a few heavy action sequences. The prologue, set in the modern day, is the most intriguing part of the book, though it looks like it'll be a very long time before that pays off.
To me, it was very similar to Demon Slayer, almost too similar at times. But I am pretty hooked on the story regardless, being a Demon slayer fan helps.
