Join Cordelia and her companions on a thrilling adventure as they navigate the high seas and confront adversaries both magical and mortal.
Indeed, the Agitators are at its core, however aside from that this book is about privateers, taking, a wide range of Creator enchantment, thus considerably more. While I’d have cherished additional time investigating the spot rather than only a montage-speed once-over of milestones, it was still so dynamic and vivid and clear to the point of effectively imagining! Furthermore, obviously, the magnificent outlines help as well. The peruser is given the redemptive powers of nature and sympathy. I love that we advance so many of these examples only through the kids in the story.
'That includes you, Cordelia Hatmaker. You're most definitely a Troublemaker!'
It doesn't happen all too often, but this series just keeps getting better and better! It starts off with the cover, which is simply fantastic and even more beautiful than both Books 1 and 2. The drawings, the colours, the whole vibe of it, it simply breathes adventure. Also, I've got the hardcover now (my previous two books are the paperbacks) and it has extra drawings and maps on the cover as well. So terrific!
The story arc regarding Lord Witloof has been closed off in Book 3, but there's new adventure looming on the horizon in the form of the Troublemakers, which have been mentioned briefly in The Mapmakers already. But there is so much more to this story. Yes, the Troublemakers are at the heart of it, but apart from that this book is about pirates, stealing, all kinds of Maker magic, and so much more. It's over four hundred pages of pure bliss, the story never slows down.
The world is expanded even more than before, with all kinds of new Maker magic introduced, and I also love the descriptions Tamzin Merchant provides, they sound so... alive. You can feel her and Cordelia's enthusiasm, wonder and love for this world coming off the page. It's simply a joy to read how everything works, and you just want to dive into this world and see and experience it all for yourself. The concept of the Island of Lost Souls was also very well-thought of.
Cordelia once again steals the show, and she definitely develops a lot in this book. She's become more knowledgeable, more self-assured too, and more courageous as well. She doesn't hesitate a moment to dive into dangerous business if it means that's the way through, and she'll get out of it too. Her time with the Troublemakers definitely changes her as well - even more for the better, that is. I absolutely adore her! Sam and Goose are great as well, especially with Sam and her lights. Goose is just a bit less enticing. And to be honest, I don't really care much about Prospero - it doesn't feel as if he contributes that much to the story now that he's arrived on-scene. The Troublemakers themselves are fantastic to read about as well, and I especially liked Thorn, obviously. She has a beautiful story arc as well.
There are a couple of surprises waiting, especially regarding the Troublemakers' pasts and the people who are really behind everything that's going wrong. My mind didn't exactly get blown, but I didn't see some revelations coming either.
The writing style is simply marvellous, with tens of beautiful sentences of all kinds regarding the characters, the world, the plot inserted. It makes you smile and re-read them, it's as simple as that.
All in all, this is a great series. I'm not sure if there will be following any more books, since Book 3 was clearly a stand-alone, but I definitely hope there's a Book 4 in the works!
I am definitely not, at 62, the target audience for this book but I promised Nora I would read it if she loaned it to me. She said, “Of course you can, if you bring it back!” You would not keep your book from a library, would you? I loved all three Makers books and I am sad that my time on the Island of Lost Souls has reached its end. Cordelia Hatmaker, Prospero, and all of the Makers in the World have been uniquely engaging. I await, with bated breath, my next adventure on the High Seas or wherever I end up.
A charming conclusion (I think?) to the Hatmaker series. Tamzin has created an enchanting world and gorgeous, diverse characters that undergo a realistic amount of growth throughout the books.
I also love a kid's book that sets the British Museum and a conservative political party as the baddies.
After thinking this wonderful world would end after only 2 books, it was such a delight to find this was being made! Though while it was certainly an excellent book it did feel a little bit like it's a standalone adventure more than a proper continuation imo. And honestly, felt like it should have been over 2 books because so much happens but it's so fast paced to try and fit in everything and unfortunately leaves some scenes and plot threads so short due to this.
Ofc I still love the characters, and the new additions fit in really well with the existing cast. Despite how fast paced it all was I think it actually managed to introduce and give a decent arc for at least the main new character and one or 2 of the additional troublemakers. But there was so many additions I honestly couldn't count how many got introduced because so many of them had such a tiny amount of page time, even ones you'd think would be important at the start.
The new world explored in this was absolutely delightful though. While I'd have loved more time exploring the place instead of just a montage-speed rundown of landmarks, it was still so vibrant and colourful and descriptive enough to easily picture! And of course, the excellent illustrations helps too.
The messaging is not very subtle at all, it's very "don't be a dick to nature and don't try and be a pride of the British museum" which is fine but considering how often that kind of message is done nowadays it doesn't really bring anything new to that conversation. Especially considering how nicely the messaging was done in the first couple books, this just felt a little too on the nose. And the messaging is pretty much just the story.
I'll note though, I did really like the ending. I think it's a very nice tie-up to the series.
If you liked the first 2, you'd certainly like this one too. Same kinda hijinks, same charming characters, same beautifully detailed illustrations! And same in a good way haha! If you want to read it as a standalone, you can since it explains basically everything you need to know but it will also spoil the first 2 books (though not massively tbh).
Finished last book in The Hatmakers series The Troublemakers, and it was a blast of excitement, riot of fun. This series is getting better with every book and moreover, the third book in this series is trying to reflect society's mindsets towards girls which was a mind-blowing change in the atmosphere that was created from the past two books.
The book beautifully mirrors some stigma which has been actually treated as social norms from the characters POV which I feel is a rebellious development in this YA series because previously it was too innocent and dealing with only magical elements but this time the plot tried to explore something different.
In this third installment, Cordelia with her friends and her father, embarked on a voyage to capture The Troublemakers gang. Cordelia saved her father in the previous book and now Cordelia Hatmaker has finally united the Maker families and restored the kingdom's trust in Maker magic. But mysterious outbreaks of chaotic magic are beginning to happen across London. And then the unthinkable happens, it was a shocking twist, Cordelia is accused of treason. As the guards close in, she must flee London at once. With her father, Prospero, and friends, Sam and Goose. Cordelia sets sail on her family's ship, Little Bear, for the adventure of a lifetime. They're determined to rescue the missing girl, and to clear Cordelia's name once and for all.
I loved how more amazing characters appeared in this book which is exquisitely crafted with nuances. Author's grip on writing visibly developed into a notch high. World building is delicious and crispy in this book and lots of new things Cordelia learnt as a social system which reflects the author's voice in a more strong manner.
I absolutely loved how this series is deeply rooted and becoming more bold, strengthening characters with relevant struggle promising us to give more astonishing adventures in future.
Tamzin Merchant’s third book of the Hatmakers series is a captivating follow-up to Cordelia Hatmaker’s story. Cordelia proves to the Maker families that they can trust her and restore faith in Maker magic, but when outbreaks of chaotic magic occur in London Cordelia is put on trial for treason. To save her future, herself, and her family, Cordelia runs away with her father Prospero and friends Sam and Goose on the family ship, 'the Little Bear' to find out the truth and investigate the disappearance of a girl. . The book introduces new characters titled the Troublemakers, led by a pirate queen who is quite fierce providing the novel with a new dimension of the adventurous as well as danger. Along with the beautiful cover, new colours are also added to the magical world, as well as new locations, together with a new type of magical power, the Maker magic. It is clear, detailed, and active in its presentation and Paula s illustrations are so beautifully done. . Cordelia is her same self in courage and self-confidence, while Sam and Goose played significant support roles along with Prospero’s detailed commitment. The Troublemakers with primary focus on Thorn do greatly enrich the game with their dark backgrounds and unclear intentions. Although the plot is very active and contains various events which deem a rather high level of their concentration. . All in all, the third book is a pleasant follow-up to the previous novels, mixing pirates and enchantments once again. Original art work and detailed representation on the dust cover add to the attractiveness of the text. The adventure can be read singly and really matches up to the first books, in fact I have to say, surpasses it a lot. I really missed out on mentioning the illustrations in the previous installments but cant in this one, the cover is really very related to the story! @paoesco8ar . If @tamzinmerchant s writes more in this world, I will definitely read!
Cordelia Hatmaker and her friends have finally managed to reunite the maker families, and are on the verge of getting the King to declare Making is open to everyone. Just as the announcement is due however a series of chaotic events break out across London, with several people becoming the victims of malevolent magic. Before she knows what is happening Cordelia is found guilty of treason, and must go on the run. Together with her friends and her father Prospero, Cordelia is once again on a mission to save London, only this time she needs to save herself first.
The third book in the Cordelia Hatmaker's series, this one follows a similar tone to the earlier ones. Cordelia and her friends are on a mission to save magic and making before the tyrannical Prime Minister can banish it for good. With all of the capers and hijinks we've come to expect, along with plenty of magic, this one was a lot of fun yet again.
It's hard to tell whether there will be more to come in this particular series, but wether it's this or a new set of characters and world I'm hoping it's not long before Merchant releases her next book.
The Troublemakers is an enthralling journey that takes place in a world where Cordelia Hatmaker, who has been accused of treason, attempts to clear her name. Together with her father Prospero and faithful friends Sam and Goose, Cordelia sails on the Little Bear across dangerous seas to confront the dreaded pirates known as The Troublemakers. With London being hit by random outbursts of disorderly magic and a young girl suddenly disappearing into thin air, Cordelia’s mettle is stretched like never before. The story constantly keeps you on edge as it goes through every twist and turn, making it a story about bravery, friendship and the indomitable power of hope. In this light, readers of “The Troublemaker” can admire how brave Cordelia grows when she faces her fears head-on and accepts her destiny which makes her exceptional strength shine through as she is determined not to give up. It was an exciting read because it had a combination of magic, mystery and sea challenges faced by seafarers in “The Troublemaker”, which left its readers yearning for more chapters in Cordelia’s epic journey.
This is the third adventure starring Cordelia Hatmaker and friends and this one features a new enemy with a reputation for terror which has spread far and wide: The Troublemakers. Big changes are afoot in Britain’s social order too as a new Prime Minister moves towards his very ‘sensible’ goals. As for Witloof? Well, he may be reduced to exhibit form but that doesn’t stop his vile legacy.
I’ve been on a bit of an odyssey with these guys this half term and I doff my cap (bicorn with Fathom Glass and just a splash of stormwater- in case you’re wondering) to Tamzin Merchant for this triumph of a third novel. What a total joy!
In the Menacing Cabinet of this volume, are stark messages about conservation, imperialism, authoritarianism and child abuse. We also see their wide-ranging effects. But all is not lost, as woven into the story- with starlight twine- is hope. The reader is presented with the redemptive powers of nature and empathy. I absolutely love that we learn so many of these lessons almost exclusively through the children in the story.
❓QOTD : If you would like to meet one exctinct animal what would it be ?

Reading "The Troublemakers" felt like reuniting with long-lost friends. Cordelia Hatmaker has been around for a long time in my life that the Hatmaker family is starting to feel like my own. The book had many surprising plot twists and mysteries lurking about. There are incredible fantasy locations, such as Soulhaven Island, which is home to lost and extinct souls like the dodos and the last remaining Soulhope tree in the world. This island serves as a haven for those seeking refuge or from being hunted. There are the Spider Glades where spiders weave webs and display it. I would live there with no hesitation.
Thank you @penguinsters & @penguinindia for sending this amazing book to me ❤️ ..
The Troublemakers by Tamzin Merchant is the third and final book in 'The Cordelia Hatmaker series. In this book, we get to see all the stakes and adventure that took place in the first two books come to an end since Cordelia has finally united all the maker families.
Faith has been restored in the maker families and its magic system throughout the kingdom. This series keeps getting better and better, if Tamzin Merchant writes any more books, I am in for it. I can see this world and storyline having the potential of getting the world as big as Percy Jackson.
The world and this kingdom along with its magic have vastly grown in this one. Cordelia grows much more in this book and she becomes more smart and knowledgeable. Her courage has grown as well and doesn't hesitate for even a minute. The perfect mix of magic, pirates, and adventure. A series that everyone should read once.
This is probably more of a 3.75 since I liked it a little less than the others in the series, but I'm going to round it up to 4 stars. I love this world so much and how the author keeps coming up with new ingredients for the makers. This book felt a little more scattered than the others but still fun, and I actually didn't expect the little "twist". Overall, this series is one of the better series in chapter books that I've seen. Definitely would recommend and I'd be willing to read more in the series (not sure if it's finished yet or not).
The last book in the Cordelia Hatmakers series did not disappoint. It delivered the same amount of magic, coziness and humour. Our cute little heroes go on an adventure much bigger than in the previous books this time, and I was full of anticipation during every page. As always, this had the feel of a magical Disney movie full of vibrant colours, a perfect cozy read after a long day. I recommend enjoying a heartwarming cup of hot cocoa as you’re reading.
I am in love with this series, the wonderful atmosphere it creates and the incredible creativity. the story is positive in the end but brings with it challenges and hardship, also exploring the negative effects of robbing and displaying objects and animals from their home for the sake of conquest. The twists and turns were never too obvious for me and overall I can't wait to dive into the next book of the series.
I liked this book because it is a unisex book. I liked this book because it has some fun and sad parts. I recommend this book to kids who are age 9 to 13. I recommend this book to kids who like pirates and girls with magical sea adventures.
Didn't mean to read this so quickly lol, but I loved it so much - and the whole series. I think I felt all the emotions in this book. But maybe the best one of them all?! A series I will definitely reread in the future.
