It's almost Valentine's Day at South Bay High, but romance is the last thing on Jayd Jackson's mind. . .

If Cupid had his way, love would be in the air at South Bay High. But even though Valentine's Day is around the corner, no one's having an easy time of it--especially not Jayd Jackson, who lost her mojo after her friend Tre's shooting. Worn out by Tre's death--and sick of the same old drama with Rah--Jayd's suddenly ruining her clients' hair and feeling alienated from her friends. And to make things worse, she's got to watch her back because her nemesis, Misty, is plotting her ruin.

Good thing Jayd has her magical Mama on her side. Because to protect herself and bring her crew back together, Jayd will need more than her inner strength. She'll need the help of her gifted ancestors. . .

It was pretty good, except for the fact that I didn't know that this was the 9th book of the series (thinking it was the 1st) so it was a little confusing to me, but now I'll check out the 1st book of the series. Otherwise, it was pretty good, I would recommend it!

Holidaze
Jayd has a vision of her great-grandmother and grandfather fighting. She’s someone else called “Sarah”. Her great-grandmother takes care of her great-grandfather and urges her, her grandmother, and to escape. When Jayd awakes, she’s been sleepwalking and is on the back porch.

Back at Drama High, Jayd gives Jeremy the cold shoulder on the way to class over his lax attitude about what happened to Nigel. She then blurts it all out when he keeps pressing her to tell him what’s wrong. He then apologizes. There’s some drama with Jay’d schedule. She ends up taking speech and debate. At home, Mama presses Jayd to make a phone call to Dr. Whitmore. On the third day back, Valentine's stuff goes up and a dance is announced. Misty accuses Jayd of being cursed in the halls. There’s some back and forth as usual. Since Misty makes her comment about death following Jayd, Jayd calls her out (for her occult practice) to KJ (whose parents are Christian). Unfortunately, Misty is in the speech class. But then so is a cute, New Latino student (who keeps staring at Jayd). Nellie and Laura are also in the class.

Mama tells Dr. Whitmore that she’s been cursed. Possibly by Misty. Jayd gets acupuncture. After it’s over, he sends her home with some vitamins to strengthen her ashe. That night Jayd has another sleepwalking episode. As she does, she dreams of her mother and great-grandmother having an argument as her mother packs her ish and decides to leave for good. Jayd sees a younger, Esmeralda in the dream and she uses her eyes to get a hold of Lynn. They have a tug of war but Lynn loses (and loses her powers). Mama throws water on Jayd and she wakes up. But now she has no sight. Mama tells Jayd she stayed in her mother’s past to long and brought some of it back with her. That’s why she has to learn to control her dreams. Jayd is excused from school until the blindness wears off.

While at home, Jayd learns that when she masters her powers in dream state, she should be able to see through her ancestor’s eyes (and use their powers). Jayd also learns from Mama that Misty is trying to make her “a zombie” by controlling her through her dreams. It seems that Maman is trying to help Jayd escape through a door. Transition Mama says is the way to deal with this.

At the funeral for Trey, Mickey is all over Nigel (who she hasn’t seen in a week) but he brushes her off. Eventually, he walks away to be alone. Mickey is clueless about what she did and Rah calls her out for being selfish. Then she gets pissed off and leaves. Misty then approaches them and makes a snide comment about Jayd’s lack of sleep. Jayd is about to kick Misty’s butt, but her mother interferes and tells her to come home. She has something that will help. The tea knocks Jayd out. Jayd has a dream of her mother receiving a heart-shaped locket for Christmas from her dad on Christmas. Shortly after one of his tricks calls and she calls it off and leaves. In another vision, Lynn Marie is with her husband on Valentine’s and is accusing him of giving some woman the same locket as he gave her. The lady comes over (She’s the waitress) and says she didn’t know she was his wife. She starts to leave but doubles over from abdominal pains (from the pregnancy). Mama shows up and calms her mother and (an unborn) Jayd and Lynn Marie apologies. Jayd’s mom (in her head) tells her to learn from her mistakes.

Jeremy stops by with breakfast. He suggests therapy and tells Jayd she doesn’t have to be so strong. Jayd says its not that simple and Jeremy accuses her of not telling him because he’s white. But he already heard about all her issues. He suggests that maybe she should find some other people to hang out with and this makes her accuse him of being controlling. Rah calls. He’s gotten Raheema back because Sandy got arrested. Jayd offers to watch Rehema while he goes to take care of some business. Her mother tells that’s not her responsibility. But Jayd ignores her. Jayd sends Jeremy on his way. Before he leaves Jeremy asks her to be his Valentine’s date. She says she’ll think about it. Later when Rah says he’s going to get Rehema, Jayd offers to keep her. They make plans for him to stay over that night. Her mama tells her don’t be a fool. She needs to stop letting people take advantage of her!

Jayd has a dream about her getting married to Rah. She just two months ago had a baby girl named Destiny. But Rah also had another baby with Sandy (Fate). Sandy burst in and tells Jayd she’ll also be in Rah’s life. Jayd escapes the church as Rah calls out to her. Esmeralda is in the back with a black veil and gives Jayd another headache. When a neighbor calls her name, she realizes she’s outside(due to her not taking the pill that day).

It’s now two in the morning. When Rah does call her back he’s in the studio with Trish. Rah comes in at 4 in the morning. She tells him she won’t be his side chick anymore, then turns in (leaving him to sleep on the floor). (Rah even asks her out for Valentine’s but even this doesn’t pacify Jayd). Mickey calls the next day and asks Jayd to go with her to Nigel’s. Rah speaks to Jayd and she finds out Nigel is creeping. He tells her don’t go over there until he speaks to Nigel. But it turns out his parents are back. Mickey rudely hangs op on Jayd when she tells her this.. Rah comes by later and Jayd finds out he’s been thrown off the football team and might get sent back to Westingale. Rah has also seemed to change his mind about Nigel being Mickey’s father. Because his parents are also in his ear, Rah pleads with Jayd to tell Mickey to give Nigel some space. Jayd doesn’t think he should just leave Mickey hanging tho.

Jayd goes back to school. Mickey wants her to talk to Nigel. Jayd tries to tell her to give him space but she says they don’t have time for it. Then she asks Jayd “if there’s something she can do,” Jayd says it doesn’t work like that and she can’t do anything without Nigel’s permission. Mickey says maybe she’ll go to Misty and Jayd tells her she needs to check herself before she loses the only friend she has. Nellie shows up in Mrs. Peterson’s class. Jayd also starts talking to the new student Emilio. Jayd recaps everything to Mama after school. She tells her to stay away from Rehema until she’s cured. She also tells her to stop making it easy for Esmerelda to get at her by distracting her with her friends' drama. As for her dreams, she’ll have to through a few past experiences and then a future one to come to a solution. Jayd’s mom makes her a special punch to get inside her friend's dreams.

Jayd gets all her friends together and gives them the punch. Before long they all fall asleep. Nickey (Mickey’s future child) tells Jayd all she wants is for her (as her Godmother) to get her mother and the man they choose to be the father back together. The next day she goes over to Nigel’s to braid his hair. But when she gets there Tasha is there. Nigel’s mom invited her over after Trey was shot and she’s been there ever since. Nigel is now doubting ifs his baby. He’s sleeping with Trish and resents Mickey for getting him shot. Jayd says she can’t braid in this environment, tells him he needs to man up to his ish, and leaves. Jayd dreams of taking care of Jeremy’s grandmother (which means her great-grandmother and Jeremy’s great-grandfather were lovers). At school, Nigel gets Jayd to braid his hair but Mickey tries to start some bs about how Nigel is cheating on her with Jayd. Mama and Netta advise Jayd to find her center. Days later, Mickey is wearing a shiny, engagement, ring. We find out from Jayd talking to her mother, she went to Misty to get Nigel to propose. Nigel comes into the shop and asks Jayd to fix his braids.. He tells Jayd she was right to get off on him. He needs to do the right thing by Mickey. Jayd, Netta, and Mama try to remove the hex. But before they do Rah comes up in the shop accusing Jayd of cheating with Nigel. She tries to explain but he leaves.

One night, Jayd has a dream of Misty chanting and trying to take all of her powers. Her mother tells her she needs to check her but as drums pound, she feels herself losing focus. Mama wakes her up. At school, Jayd finds out that Misty is now braiding hair too. Rah tries to “hang out with” Jayd on Valentine’s Day but he doesn’t want to go to her dance because he’s going to his own school’s dance with Trish and Tasha. He says it's for Nigel getting on the team. Jayd ends the conversation. ayd has a dream that Esmeralda is telling Misty she needs Jayd’s eyes. She says she’s casting a dream net and she’ll keep Mama occupied. Misty has a bow and arrow. Esmeralda has a net. Mama calls out to Jayd to wake up and she does. She confronts Misty the next day (who know has Nellie and Mickey on her side). They all accuse her of trying to steal their men. Jayd tries to un spell Mickey, but Misty blocks her and puts her back under. They all accuse her of stealing their men. Jayd grabs Misty by the hair and forces her to look at her own reflection and Jayds in her locker mirror. Before Jayd can get her to look at herself, Mrs. Bennett shows up Jayd gets anger management counseling.

On the night of the dance, Rah shows up. Jayd tells him he has to get home. Rah sees Misty and gets it. She tells him to distract KJ. When Misty is distracted, Jayd pours some potion in her punch. Then she goes home. Mother, daughter, and Grandmother do a ritual that takes Jayd back to the past. Jayd goes into Misty’s dreams and undoes what she’s done (with the help of Trey and her ancestors). After she wakes up, Jayds memories of the day before are gone. (But it’s temporary). Jayd vows never to get that out of control again. Her Mama says at least not she knows how to get it back. Jayd sees Misty and her mother. Misty’s eyes have returned to their normal brown (powers stripped). At the end of the book, Sandy has gotten out of jail and is staying at Rah’s place.

My Thoughts
One of the discussion questions asked did you know anyone who slept-walked and was it scary. Although I’ve never seen anyone sleepwalk, I do know that my grandfather did. My aunt tells this story about how the neighbors called one day and told her he was over there. It is scary when I think of it because, unlike Jayd grandma and uncles, my aunt wasn’t aware he’d left the house. He could have walked in front of a car. The neighbors could have heard him in their house and shot at him thinking he was a burglar. He could have not walked to the neighbors and found himself somewhere lost and confused. I never asked but I hope that after that she started locking the doors at night. It only happened that one time, so that’s a good sign that she did.

There was also another question about if you could go back and change a past event what would you change? I would change the day when I went into a coma and was diagnosed with diabetes. Some people seem to handle being diabetic really well. This has NOT been the case for me! When I think about all the areas it’s caused damage to me over the years, there is no doubt that this is something I regret ever getting. It’s done nothing but caused me stress, anxiety, and financial hardship.

It asked if you could have one of the William’s women’s gifts which would it be. I think it would be pretty useful to have their mind-reading abilities. I’m not always crazy about the frequency Mama and Lynn Mae invading Jade’s thoughts but I think this power could help uncover people’s true intentions right from the start. This is always something I haven’t done so well with in the past. Having this power would have prevented a lot of heartache and disappointment down the road. As, long as I knew how to control it though. I don’t think I’d always want to be in people’s heads. Some of the time, I don’t want to be in people’s heads when I do have access.

It asked should Jayd entertain dating Emilio. NO! Jayd has enough drama. I’m starting not to be all that crazy about Jayd “being friends with” Jeremy. One of the things I hae about Rah is that Jayd always seems to come second in his life to whatever else. But then Jayd does the same thing herself to Jeremy. I actually think Jeremy is a decent enough guy. As for the problems, it asks it could create. Probably the same problems there are with her dating Jeremy. Only in his case, he’s a Latino. I think there will always be problems around Jayd dating someone else who isn’t black. But ironically they turn a blind eye to Rah’s ish.

Another question was how do you feel Nigel should react to being shot by Mickey? Should he break up with her? I think that Nigel knew very well what he was getting into with this girl when he decided to mess around with her. He knew her man was bat ish crazy when he came up to the school looking for her. So, he *had* to know he’d come after him. Had he been SMART he wouldn’t have messed around with Mickey in the first place. Yet, guys and their hormones don’t always think with the logical *head* So, then HE should have been smart and told Mickey, “Hey you need to handle this!” It’s like that old Genuwine song “What’s So Different” There’s a line that goes “I just don’t wanna get caught up in drama. Just tell him don’t cheat on him. If you don’t tell him me and you can’t be. Cause tell me how I won’t know you won’t do that ish to me.” I don’t think he deserved to get shot but he also didn’t check Mickey and he was stupid enough to believe that screwing around with a gangsters girl wouldn’t get him shot. So, he played with fire and got burnt.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day at South Bay(Jayd's school)but she's constantly watching her back because of her friend Tre’s shooting. Worn out by Tre’s death—and sick of the same old drama with Rah—Jayd’s suddenly ruining her clients’ hair and feeling alienated from her friends. And to make things worse, she’s got to watch her back because her nemesis, Misty is plotting her ruin. Not only does she have internal troubles, but Jayd also has external troubles too. With her ex-boyfriend Jeremy always following Jayd around she feels that she starting too led him on again witch has Jayd feel that she must choose between rah and Jeremy.

Jayd feels that she cannot count on anyone except for her magical ancestors. So thats who she always turns to. Jayd agrees to watch Rah's baby Rahima, but little does she know she's watching Rahima for the wrong purposes. jad catches Rah still dealing marajuinna and on top of that with his ex-girlfriend which gets Jayd to her boiling point. She knows for a fact that Jeremy would never disrespect Jayd like that even if he has a child of his own(but the baby lives with Tanya Jeremy's ex in New York.Seeing her clique torn apart she'll have to bring her crew back together, Jayd will need more than her inner strength. Jayd starts to connect with her boy. Holidaze was a good book that had lots of drama and mystery. I would suggest everyone read this book. Jayd has become strong with in her powers and became a woman. Shes been threw a lot and had help from her friends and family along the way.

I thought this book was amazing. The plot of the story was so deep and interesting. It talked about how the girl had a different life than everyone else. How she her grandmother and mother was witches. How she had to go about different problems that she faced, and focus on her spells and school work. In the beginning of the story she had a relationship with a guy who had a child with baby mama drama. Towards the middle of the story she realized that she doesn't need a boy in her life right now because she has other things to worry about. After she would come home from doing work at school she would have to do even more because she had to study her spells with her grandmother. The unique thing about the main character was she could talk to her mom telepathically and ask her for advice for different situations. I didnt like how the story line dragged on without an ending. I feel that the book was really good the story line is so intense its makes you want to keep reading and I would definitely recommend it to people who like mysterious and surprising stories.

This was the first book I read of this serie, but I understood a lot and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of this serie! This brings culture in so many ways and especially since it includes some Yoruba which I understand. You can tell that Jayd honours her ancestors, respects her culture and family members, battles against her enemies and in the whole process, she never forgets who she is and never forgets to have fun even if it's just romance or figuring out her friend.

OMG What happened to Tre was crazy. Mickey's boyfriend or ex what ever he is to her is even crazier she needs to get slapped. But back to Jayd this was so sad and it hurt her the most. With Valentine's Day around the corner I who she's gonna spend it with friends, family, or a special somebody? It was a great read and i loved it.

I think she pick the right person and thats Jeremy... He was by herside the whole time even when she threw up in the hall, and he said "I'm going take you home sweetie and im always gonna be by your side." He spent the night over her house, and he feed her ... Jeremy is the one for her, but Rah he's okay but he going back and forth with his baby mommaand that's to much for Jayd.

I think this book is really interesting due to the drama involved within this story and going through real life tragedies like losing a close friend to gun violence that many people in this world can relate to. I would recommend this book to teens around 14-19 age range because I feel this specific age group can relate to this story even more in which we have to deal with someone that we don’t like at school but we have to face them whenever we see them in the hallway, lunch, or even worse in class. just like how Jayd has to deal with Misty.

I couldn't really get into this book. It's been a while, but I've read all of the other books before this one in this series & I enjoyed them. Looking back on it, I was really young.. And now that I've gotten older, I've read much more mature books and those seem to grasp my attention more. I would probably let my 12 year old sister read a series like this, & the whole heritage thing just seems like it takes over the whole book. Basically I just think I've outgrown it... It's still a pretty good read though.

What i have learned from this bok is that don't hope for the best on Valentines day and christmas becasue when you have an ex-boyfriend and and your previous one fighting over you and you have to pick which one you want to be with it's not an easy decision and becasue when one of the lie to you and you find out the other is still there to be with you i guess.

All of L. Divines books are so good they have me trying to hurry her up (IN MY MID OF COURSE)to already get the next book written so I could read it. All of her books are dealing with different teenage lives and how they handle it. Even though they all have different lives they all come together in the end no matter what. I love her books
