Born in Illinois, Gem originally wanted to become a storm chaser before settling on writing. Coming up with stories since the age of 10, she first cut her teeth on fanfiction, gaining quite a following for her unique takes and overall ability to create believable characters and scenarios.

She studied Creative Writing at university and earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree. She works on exclusively original content these days. As a bi author, her main genres are a mix of gay (male) romance, fantasy, and reality, presented with a good dose of wit and layered (and sometimes darker-than-expected) plot lines.

I planned on taking my time to read this one. But I got drawn in and couldn't put it down. There was the odd, and I mean odd, occasion I felt it was dragging a little, but then the action kicked off again, and I was sucked right back in. The originality of adding the forum and chats was pure genius and added to the world as a whole. The details were sublime, and I was left with no questions except for what this author will write next.

Yu and Adrian.
Yu is standoffish, stoic, and strong. Adrian is hurting, afraid, and grappling with new powers, he doesn't understand.
This is a slow burn. But I feel like it needed to be, and when Yu and Adrian finally get together, it's real, raw, beautiful, oh, and spicy as hell, lol.
The characters were vividly painted, the world-building was incredible, and I'm so thrilled I was able to escape reality and dive into such a richly filled world of magic, ghosts, friendship, and stardom.

Chills and thrills are abundant in Our Darkest Hour. Adrian is coming to terms with a traumatic accident and bereavement, which left him open to psychic abilities. He joins a paranormal research team, and despite his awkwardness and inability to control his powers, he manages to find his place in the team. The different paranormal scenes are spine-chilling and superbly executed. The growing relationship with protective Yu is beautiful and thrilling. Despie being a long read, the pages whizzed by. The forum posts that intercept the main story are great - a mix of crazed fan diatribe , witticisms, and a refreshing addition to the main story. #ourdarkesthour #gabriellaemari #thriller #paranormal #romance #TheWriteReads

Book source ~ TWR Tour

Adrian Sinclair has a life altering experience and now he not only can sense the energy of spirits, he can see and hear them, too. When weird things start happening at his house, his family calls in the Crossroads Paranormal Research Society to put a stop to it. But they do something else as well. They take Adrian on as an intern so he can learn how his new abilities work and how he can control them. This puts him on a path he could never have envisioned.

This is a story full of heart! With great characters, interesting plot, and paranormal aspects it’s a tale that kept me turning the pages. The pacing is a bit slow in spots and could probably have been trimmed a bit, but that doesn’t detract too much from its appeal.

Oh, Adrian. The things you’ve been through. The author should be ashamed! Just kidding. Sometimes characters have to be put through the wringer in order to grow. And Adrian does grow. But not without help from his new friends. This heartfelt story of loss, love, and the dangerously weird is really one that shouldn’t be missed.

This is a four star read for me. I don't really have anything negative to say (other than perhaps it is a little too long). It didn't quite hit that must turn the page feel, to get 5 stars but it is still really good.

The writing, as others have mentioned, is top notch - at a level where it would proudly sit alongside anything in Waterstones or wherever. The plot is also interesting and makes you want to know more, I love a good hidden super natural powers trope and although the seeing ghosts thing has been done before (what hasn't) I think E Mari has a great new take on it, with the paranormal investigators trying to earn a few bucks and get exposure on Youtube.

I also really liked the romance. I have seen a few people humming and hawing about that in some other reviews and just want to let the author know that I think the romance was sensitive and well done and really hit me in the feels.

Overall this is a great book and I'd be happy to read more from Gabriella E Mari.

3.5 stars A good debut story with ghosts and other paranormal creatures about telling it from Adrian’s POV.

Adrian, 23 years, was keeping a secret from his parents after the accident a year ago where he had died. They meet the Crossroads Paranormal Research Society, as their house had 👻guests and they make an offer to Adrian to learn with them with his own ability.
A story of Adrian discovering that he was psychic and could see and talk to ghosts. Lots of new adventures as the team find new jobs and their problems, which Adrian takes in his stride with the dangers especially with the demons.
The team with Yukio, Lukas, Julian and Hunter each have their own baggage which was the result in Adrian joining them replacing Skyler. You’ll get to meet Skyler as well get his story as to what happened.
This encounters themes of fake boyfriends, emotions, PTSD, unrequited love, friends to lovers, and a whole lot more included in the story.

While this book had over 500 pages it kept my attention up to a point but after that I admit I started skimming. It wasn't until the 70% mark that the romance started for Adrian and his man. I would have liked this to have been a shorter book and other POVs included to love this book.

Thank you Writeread and the author for a copy of this book.

I absolutely adore this book, it started slow for me but its usual as it depends on my mood.... once i got a couple of chapters in i was glued to my couch and completely absorbed in it....
i really love the CPRS team and would fight anyone that would hurt them...... Adrian is my little baby along with hunter and Juelian.... and yes, Yu and Lukas are both my type.
the story plot itself would not survive the 500 pages as its your standard paranormal story if it wasn't for the Forum pages... those made it for me... it was a nice break in the story and i was laughing reading them....
the ending was satisfying even though i wished it was an actual epilogue instead of a forum page.

anyways am really happy with this book and i look forward to reading more of the author.

I wanted something spooky and heartfelt and I got something spooky and heartfelt. :)

This novel is the first of the survivors of my so-called "First Chapter Culling" (related to the BBNYA contest of indie books this year) that I read. Which basically means I knew almost nothing about the book beforehand but I loved the first chapter so much that it placed on my TBR pretty high. I have my own interest in Ghostbuster/Phasmophobia/Supernatural-inspired stories, so I was looking forward to it a lot.

I had a great time with this book. Adrian was a character I immediately was interested in...a young man out of a traumatising experience, newly able to see ghosts and paranormal creatures. He is shy, a bit awkward, but loveable--I just wanted to protecc, you know? He joins a team of paranormal investigators who are pretty famous online, catches feelings for one of his colleagues, and ends up facing a foe that terrifies the entire ghosthunting community. It's packed with ghosthunting cases, the dynamic of the team is great (shoutout to Hunter and Julian), there are cozy and spooky and action-y moments everywhere, and we even get regular updates from the team's fandom in the form of forum conversations. I just loved these. I love looking at fandom and its behaviours and whatnot, so these were so interesting to me, very funny, plus, very craftily worldbuilding too! There's a subtle mystery building through the whole book which you can catch pretty early on, but since Adrian knows nothing in the beginning, it only gets revealed as significant gradually. And by the time you could be like "hey...so what's going on" we're already squaring up for the final fight. Which is...a doozy!

A large part of the book is the slow-burn romance which was done really well. I'm not a romance person at all and the story was almost too spicy for my tastes, but the important thing, the emotional bond was solid. The love interest is a gentle, adoring, protective person and they were just so good to each other with Adrian. It's all very sweet. There's only a bit of drama which was *popcorn-eating.gif*--enjoyably messy, but not too much.

I sometimes wished we could spend a bit more time on the ghost cases themselves, the ghost/demon lore, spooky scenarios and the bonding of the whole team--everything was understandable, these were just my favourite things so I wanted more. But the story is more personal to Adrian, and it worked really well on that level. I even shed some tears at the end. There's a strong theme of grief and loss which resolves in a bittersweet, satisfying way.

The author weaves an exciting, heartfelt tale of spooky ghosts, old scars and new-found love in a novel packed with mysteries, wholesome moments and a bit of spice. I'll be there for any possible sequels for sure. ;)

Super Enthusiastic Recommendation!

This was exactly what I wanted to read right now. Sweet, funny, and exciting, with just enough compelling drama to keep you obsessively reading. I’m not really sure what genre to describe this book as because it hits on so much: Ghost story, M/M Romance, Reality TV spoof, maybe even RPS fanfic third-wall-breaking comedy? Seriously, what more could you ask for from a book?

Mari is a new author to me so I came to this story with no expectations. I’m not even sure where I found the rec or why I bought it; maybe it came up in one of my random searches for indie authors? I even forgot I purchased it until I came across it a few days back, waiting in my e-reader library. I am so glad that I bought it though!

The characters were incredibly relatable. The MC Adrian is adorable, and his shy, angsty, self-conscious demeanor, immediately pulls the reader in. His love interest, Yu, perfectly fits the handsome stoic loaner stereotype. Lukas is the love triangle guy. And the goofballs, Julian & Hunter, perfectly round out the cast. I promise, you’ll end up loving them all by chapter 3.

But the piece de resistance are the hilarious, and eminently well written, fake forum threads that the author winds through the book by way of narration. I cannot say how much I enjoyed these little snippets. As an author who got my own start in fanfiction, these passages were what won me over. Anyone who’s ever spent any time in a fandom will immediately relate to every faux post Mari writes. I was literally laughing out loud so often I lost count. Excellently done!

Yes, I enthusiastically recommend this book to pretty much anyone who likes ghost stories, romance, or comedy. You won’t go wrong.

This was such a fun and gripping read! I had an absolute blast from start to finish, and I couldn’t put it down.

We follow a group of YouTube ghost-hunters, and their various misadventures in supernatural occurrences and – for some – romance. Their fandom also feature heavily as well, which was a lovely touch!

📚Blog📖YouTube📖Instagram📚

The story centres around a romance between two members of the group. It was so compelling with plenty of will-they-won’t-they, and when they eventually did it was well worth the wait. The core friendship group was also a stand-out feature of this book. It was great to see the friends develop and evolve over the course of the novel, and you know I always love a found family! They were funny but still full of heart and really grounded the story.

I also loved the addition of the fandom to the story. We got glimpses into the fan forum, and we got to know the various members of the fandom through their screen names. It felt like a love letter to fandom, with the mods, the shipping wars, the fan-fiction, and the low-stakes high-drama arguments that break out!

In the end, the supernatural elements felt secondary to the more character-driven plot lines. This was such a fun read with characters I am already obsessed with. I can’t wait for the sequel!

I received a free copy for an honest review.

Adrian is a very intriguing character and once you learn of his traumatising past experience you immediately feel sorry for him and want to protect him, and I was glad when he found that in Yu. Now he is left with this new supernatural ability that he does not know how to handle, so the paranormal investigator team comes as a great help. Once he joins their team he is taken on some pretty spooky ghost- (and other entity-) hunting trips that had shivers running down my spine! If you are into paranormal stories, ghost-huntings and the like you will really enjoy this.

I really liked was the sequences from the online forum. They read a bit like text messages – you see the usernames and their comments, and I felt getting an insight into the fandom made the whole thing so much more authentic than if we had just been told what the fandom was up to.

The book is on the longer side and some might find it a bit slow but the writing is really good and the romance and threat from a particularly nasty paranormal entity are enough to keep you turning the page. It was also great seeing Adrian getting better at handling his powers.

If you are a fan of the supernatural, if you like mysteries and ghosthunter stories and don’t shy away from some spicy romance mixed into it, you will really enjoy this book! I certainly did.

4 stars from me!

Our Darkest Hour by Gabriella E Mari is well written and boasts well developed characters and a rather intriguing plot. There are some graphic scenes of a sexual nature, but nothing adults shouldn’t be able to handle.

It took a little while to get into it but by 3-4 chapters in I was very engaged. It turns out that the main character, Adrian, realises he is able to see ghosts and paranormal activity and together with a rather rag tag band of others he joins an investigative team that is popular on YouTube and social media. Indeed social media in general plays a large part in this with the online exchanges being among the highlights of the book. They remind me a little of the Ink Black Heart by JK Rowling - they are really quite entertaining.

We have a big cast of characters in this Adrian, Hunter, Lukas, Julian, Yu and more and they are all quite well developed, I didn’t find myself getting confused between them as I sometimes do when we get introduced to a lot of people quickly. The sex scenes are graphic but tasteful, though I never felt myself particularly engaged with that aspect of the book (its not bad or anything, but it does take over the plot a bit in the latter half). Just the general setting, the paranormal investigating and and surrounding fandom was the highlight for me.

Good book!

I was kindly sent this book as part of The Write Reads book tour, and had only the most basic information about it before diving in:

A group of supernatural investigators travel around America, hunting (but not busting!) ghosts.

This is accurate, but it’s also a gorgeous slow-burn queer love story - and it lovingly pokes fun at internet fame, online fandoms and ships!

Adrian is a budding psychic who is recruited by the CPRS - the Crossroads Paranormal Research Society. These not-quite-Winchesters soon become found family as they discover a dark force that seems to be targeting folk like him.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to get on with this book initially. The main plot really takes its time getting under way, but I realized that’s not the point. This book is a sweet tale of love, friendship and discovering one’s own power. The supernatural element is engaging, and the ongoing Reddit-style chats about the boys are hilarious! Who’d be an online celebrity?

The protagonists are beautifully drawn and I found myself worrying as I neared the end of the book - it’s the only thing this author has written, and I wish there was more already! It’s an absolute pleasure to read: gentle, fun and heartfelt, with a genuinely spooky undercurrent that keeps you guessing.

Perfect for curling up with on a dark night.

Our Darkest Hour is a slow burning romance with paranormal and supernatural elements.

Our main character Adrian Sinclair can see ghosts and even communicate with them. He is soon recruited by a popular paranormal investigators YouTube Channel to help them with their cases (the online fan forum for this channel is one of the best parts of the book actually). It’s very well written throughout though the sex scenes were a bit much for my tastes (that doesn’t mean others won’t like them!).

I think the author is at their best when developing the paranormal investigation side of things, would love to see them tackle an out and out horror/ghost story, though I’m sure the romance will appeal to many too. All in all its a very well written an entertaining read if a little lengthy and slow burning in spots with some very steamy bits!

3.5 stars. I really liked portions of this book (the forum is fun) but other parts felt underdeveloped. There's a sort of love triangle with Lukas that just goes away and is never discussed again, the concept of Holy Fire is raised but never explained how it affects psychic abilities, etc. Also, not sure why everything that goes wrong is always blamed on Lucas although Adrian is a fully capable adult who can say no and decide his own actions. Then a bunch of stuff happens off page at the end (Lukas stepping down (what does that mean? how does it actually change anything?), Adrian/Yu getting married) which was kind of annoying. However, I'm interested enough to read the next book.

This was such a fun read. The forum interludes were such an interesting addition and I thought they were done really well. Adrian, and all of the characters really, felt so 3 dimensional and I loved watching his relationship with each of the CPRS crew slowly evolve. The slow burn romance had me giggling and kicking my feet and the spicy scenes were very well written. The set up for the main villain was really well done, the last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat.
Overall I just had a really good time reading this book.
