Ethan I had everything. I was going to college and having a blast. Enjoying myself and not taking much seriously. But then, two years ago, everything changed. A car wreck destroyed my life. It sent me into a total tailspin. I walked away, even when everyone said I wouldn’t be able to. But I haven’t recovered from it. The only thing I have left is my best friend, but I’m sure he’ll give up on me soon. Even so, I can’t fight the truth . . . I’m irrevocably ruined.
Knox College is coming to an end, and I couldn’t be happier to finally start my real life. Ethan and I had plans. So many amazing plans. And then, everything changed. He was in a horrific wreck, but he miraculously survived. Except it took a piece of him. I’ve tried to help him get it back. Tried to get him to go to a trauma support group and come back to me. He thinks he’s broken, but I know the real Ethan is still there. The brave, outgoing man I’ve known my entire life. And I’m going to help him see the truth. That he can overcome this. That he may have been a little wrecked, but he wasn’t ruined.
Nicole Dykes is a wife and a professional assistant/mom to two gorgeous girls. Currently residing in Kansas, she’s a lover of coffee, Kansas City Chiefs, and all things romance.
She's found her passion in writing M/M romance because love is love is love. Some popular works include Hostile, The Spark of Hope Series, and The Kensley Panthers Series!
My first introduction to Nicole Dykes wonderful works was through Bruised But Not Broken, the first book in the Spark of Hope series, and I have been looking forward to Ethan's story since we met him.
This was a sweet and emotional best-friends-to-lovers story. Ethan carries deep trauma, survivor's guilt and PTSD from an accident. He wants to feel normal again but is struggling, and on top of that, he feels that his own trauma and fears are not valid. However, he has Knox, sweet, patient and loving Knox, who is there to help and support him through his healing.
Soon the lines between best friends and lovers blur as Ethan's feelings towards Knox become romantic after having a sex dream about him. Feelings that had been simmering in him (longer than he realized) start to boil over. Knox has had his heart broken and his trust betrayed by past boyfriends. He carries his own trauma regarding relationships. So when Ethan shows his feelings are more than friendship, he fears losing his friend and that he may only be using him.
I loved how Ethan wanted to try not only for Knox but himself. He gets the courage and, with the support of his friends, to slowly start opening up at group therapy and take the steps needed to heal. I also adored how Knox reassured him that he did not need to force himself and broke through his insecurities. Ethan feels that he is not worthy of Knox's love, but Knox is there to prove him wrong.
I also loved seeing how their relationship blossomed from best friends to lovers and then boyfriends. They both knew with the history they had already had, it was not going to be traditional or slow. The intimacy and sex were also wonderfully written.
While the story was deep and emotional, it was also low angst. I loved how they communicated with one another when insecurities and worries came up. They talked through issues and concerns and laid it all out with one another.
The conversations around sexuality and labels were interesting as well. I understand both Ethan's and Knox's points of view. Ethan, who has had no interest in men romantically until Knox, can potentially see himself as bi, but he also doesn't want to be boxed in. On the other hand, Knox sees his label as a gay man as important to his identity.
Overall I enjoyed Ethan and Knox's story! Nicole Dykes provided us with another beautiful addition to the series. While this story can be read as a standalone, you will get the full depth and experience by reading the previous books. I can't wait for the next book, I love stories with single fathers so super excited.
**I received a complimentary copy and this is my honest review**
*** I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.***
Wrecked but not Ruined is the third entry in the Spark of Hope series and once again this author knocked it out of the park with this emotional best friends to lovers story where I felt all the emotions as Knox and Ethan realize their true feelings for one another.
This series has one of the most honest and realistic portrayals of the process of healing from trauma. I love how this author takes such expert care with her characters while they navigate their personal hurdles. Ethan's particular trauma was handled with care and kindness as you patiently watch him slowly heal and process his significant trauma.
To help Ethan with his daily struggles is the always reliable and consistent Knox. He is Ethan's best friend who has such earnest love and affection for Ethan that you can't help that these two will finally see how much they mean to one another.
Seeing their relationship develop and grow to something more intimate was so darn sweet to see that made for all the emotional aspects of the story more substantial. Overall this story is an impactful emotional read that puts its characters first and I loved seeing Knox and Ethan gradually fall for one another. It was so perfect to see!!!!
I love this series and cannot wait for the next one!!!
Cute but annoying at times. At one point I didn’t like either main character and almost DNF’ed but decided to continue because..idk just didn’t have anything else lined up. Haha
I am glad I stuck with it. After you get over the same internal dialogue and external dialogue you will start to enjoy Knox and Ethan. Haha
I am going to continue with the books when they pop up on audio, but I am not dying to start the next one. I also really want Andrews book soon… although can’t remember if he’s straight or not… lol
Wrecked But Not Ruined so far is my favorite book I’m the series. The author did it again, creating a world you never want to leave.
Here is what to expect:
MM Romance
Friends to Lover
Bi Awakening
Trauma
Addicting
Let me count the ways of how much I love Ethan. He is such a sweet and sexy soul. He was drowning from his trauma of a car accident. Luckily be alive, yet barely living. What killed me was how he didn’t think his trauma was valid. Knox has been Ethan’s Best friend since they were children with a heart of gold. Ethan’s one true friend.
I adore and am borderline obsessed with these two. Read how their relationship developed from friendship to lovers, which is beautiful and a privilege to read. Bi or Gay awaking is one of my favorite tropes, and I love how the author writes their awaking. Let’s not forget the spicy scenes. Always a bonus.
For me this is the best of the series. I’m a sucker for bi-awakening, especially when it’s friends to lovers.
Ethan and Knox have been friends for a long time, in fact Ethan was the first person Knox came out to.
Nothing could come between them, not even when Ethan was in a horrible car crash. He may have walked away with only three stitches but it left a scar on his psyche. The worst part is he feels he doesn’t deserve his fear of cars, that he’s overreacting.
It takes a lot for him to understand that he’s traumatized.
I loved how much Knox worried, how much it hurt him whenever Ethan suffered. The love he had for Ethan was magical.
Then the dream, bless that dream and everything that came to pass! I quite enjoyed Ethan’s suffering as he tried to figure out all these new feelings.
And once he did… holy fucking smokes. So freaking hot these two. Total chef’s kiss.
I really thought this series would have much more angst, considering the books centre around a trauma support group, but this is the first book where I've felt the characters trauma.
Ethan was a really believable character for me, whereas the previous two books everything just seemed super convenient and easily resolved. This one felt more hard earned I guess, whereas Colby and Brooks seemed to bounce back really quickly which threw me off.
Overall Opinion Just when I thought Nicole couldn't do any better, she goes and writes this masterpiece! This one, like the rest in the series, was emotional and raw and respectful in every way possible, and whilst it did deal with heavy trauma it was written in a way that wasn't hard to read.
We have Ethan, our sweet broken soul who suffered a traumatic car accident and has severe PTSD, and we have Knox, our supportive sunshine boy who loves his best friend with all his soul. These two have the most wonderful healthy friendship that blossoms into a chemistry filled romance; a perfect example of best friends to lovers. Being able to witness their love for one another bloom and grow was so beautiful, and seeing Ethan begin to heal from his experience was truly emotional and deep.
Overall, this was a beautifully written low angst story of healing and real love, and I cannot possibly love Nicole more after this one!
Read if you like: ❣️ M/M Romance ❣️ Friends to Lovers ❣️ Bi Awakening ❣️ Trauma Healing ❣️ Low Angst ❣️ HEA
"You don't want me either," he breathes, but I don't think he's so sure. His breathing increases, and he's staring at my mouth like I've caught him doing since I told him about my dream.
Wrecked But Not Ruined is the third book in the Spark of Hope series by Nicole Dykes, which is set around a trauma support group. Whilst each book is a standalone, I do recommend reading them in order to get the full picture of all the characters involved.
This is Knox and Ethan's story. We met Ethan briefly in earlier books as he works at Ben and Colby's gym, so it was great to finally get his back story.
Like the other two books in the series, Wrecked But Not Ruined explores trauma and the effect it has on relationships, amongst more.
Ethan and Knox have been best friends for ever, through school and into college. Childhood neighbours, they share everything and when Knox comes out as gay nothing changes between them. When Ethan somehow walks away from a car crash that should have killed him, Knox is there supporting him through every nightmare.
Except lately, some of those nightmares have taken a different turn and now Ethan is scared for a whole different set of reasons.....
If you love best-friends-to-lovers, bi-awakening, and all things cute and steamy (with some angsty times thrown in) you'll love this latest Spark of Hope instalment.
Well what do ya know….Nicole has given us another fabulous book in the Spark of Hope series.
This book is about Ethan and him dealing with his trauma of being in a car crash, his head rules everything at the moment, there’s no talking him out of it, he knows he’s not FINE but he can’t seem to take the help that is being offered to him.
Knox can only sit by and watch as his friend becomes a recluse in his own mind, he keeps pushing for him to get help but nothing seems to be working, he loves his best friend and is struggling to watch him suffer.
This book is about healing and communication, learning to deal with your fears and seek the help you need to heal yourself from within. It’s about self discovery, friendship and love.
I loved seeing two friends who care about each other work towards an end goal of healing and love, Nicole knows how to deal with these tough subjects in a delicate way, her writing is amazing, if you haven’t read this series then I urge you to go download book one and start from there even tho this can be read as a standalone you will get to know all of the found family from Spark of Hope.
*ARC received from author in exchange for my honest review. *
Nicole Dykes Spark of Hope series is some of her best work. Stories full of second chances, finding love after heartbreak and ultimately finding that spark of hope when it seems all is lost.
Wrecked But Not Ruined is a bi-awakening between two best friends with themes of grumpy/sunshine and hurt/comfort feels.
After a car accident that left Ethan walking away feeling entirely too lucky to be alive his life crumbled. He was no longer the man he was before it happened. Ethan wanted to get better, and he tried but our brains are fickle beasts constantly lying to us saying that we just need to get over things when it doesn't work that way.
Knox knows that Ethan is trying but he wants to be a good best friend. He wants to encourage him to take whatever steps necessary to get over the events of his past. It isn't always that easy though so he will just keep doing what he is doing by being the best friend he can be.
Ethan and Knox go about life trying to do their best. Ethan trying to get over his past and Knox by being by his side through it all but one dream for Ethan starts to change everything. He can't believe he just had that kind of dream about his best friend. Now he can't even look at Knox without thinking about what it would be like to kiss him.
Being in a relationship with your best friend sounds like the ideal situation but Knox has his own trauma from past relationships, and he can't be this moment in time for Ethan. Knox has never let his feelings for Ethan go there but what if they did.
Nicole Dykes never ceases to make me swoon for her boys. Knox and Ethan will always have a special place in my heart because their friendship was the heart of this story. With plenty of steam, unconditional love and even a few tears be prepared to fall in love with book three in The Spark of Hope Series.
i didn’t like this one as much as the others. the relationship car a bit out of nowhere and i was expecting something at the end, like some conflict, anything really, but it didn’t happen.
While this was overall sweet, I was unfortunately a bit disappointed, especially considering how much I loved the previous book. It felt very rushed, and didn't have the emotional resonance than the rest of the series has had so far. Knox and Ethan have known each other their whole lives, so there wasn't much buildup in their relationship. Considering neither one of them had ever seen each other romantically or sexually prior to the novel, they went from friends to more rather abruptly. Usually friends to lovers works better for me when at least one of them has been pining for each other for a while, but there was none of that here. It was still nice to see cameos from previous characters, and I applaud the author for validating how subjective and individual trauma can be. I definitely still want to read more from this series, especially Andrew's story, which I'm hopeful will be book 5? Fingers crossed!
I didn't like this story. This was the weakest installment so far, at least in my opinion.
The love relationship between lifelong friends Ethan and Knox seemed a bit forced, there was absolutely no chemistry between them.
🟢 Ethan's bi-awakening wasn't believable, one day he's talking about him not being able to get in the car for the first 50 pages of the book, the next day he has a brilliant idea of kissing his gay bestie.
It made absolutely no sense and I felt no intense passion or desire from Knox, it was almost like they both had some shitty experiences in life and since they've known each other for so long, why not go for it, right?
🟣 The trauma meetings were soooo boring. Like honestly, I thought I was going to dnf this book at about 42%, but I read it, although I fast-read through all the meetings at the gym.
Andrew doesn't look like much of a therapist. Has he really helped anyone drastically so far?
I was just really disappointed.
The talk about Ethan's fear of cars after the accident was getting on my freaking nerves, pages and pages of it, I was really done before I was even half way through the book.
I don't even know why i'm giving it 2⭐, I didn't like it, the book is boring, I mean really boring, it didn't hold my interest and all the tropes didn't work in this one. Not at all.
“I know it won’t always be this easy, but for right now, I’m going to call everything exactly what it is . . . Perfect.”
Another fantastic book by Nicole Dykes! Wrecked But Not Ruined is the 3rd book in the Sparks of Hope series, and it follows Ethan from the first two books, and his best friend, Knox. ❤️
Ethan is suffering severe PTSD after experiencing a car accident two years prior. He is unable to drive or be a passenger in a car due to his trauma, and therefore, walks everywhere. My heart broke for Ethan, especially since he felt his trauma was not worth discussing. Watching him work through everything and eventually climb his way out of the darkness made my heart soar! 🙌🏻❤️
Knox is the textbook perfect best friend. He is loyal, supportive, and cares deeply for Ethan. Because of this, their relationship easily transitions from friendship to romantic love. Ethan and Knox had amazing chemistry as friends, and their romance was even better!! I adore friends to lovers, so this book had me hooked. 🥵❤️
Favorite quote: “I love this man. This beautiful man who feels a little wrecked but is definitely not ruined. Not even close.”
I love the premise of this series. I think it sheds such a positive light on how wonderful a support group can be. With how this book ended, I am really excited for the next one. 🙌🏻🫶🏻
I love Ethan & Knox so much!!💚 “It doesn’t make any sense. I was fine. Why can’t I just be fine?” His voice is strained, the tendons in his neck pulled tight. “I don’t know. But it’s okay not to be okay, you know? It doesn’t make you weak to admit that.”
“I don’t want my whole life to be about this one traumatic experience.”
“I want to be good enough for you.”
“Yeah? You want that?” I nod my head. “I do. I want everything with you.”
Ethan got into a bad car wreck two years ago and walked away with only a couple of stitches but since then he hasn’t been able to even think about getting in a car without a panic attack, thankfully his best friend Knox has been there through everything.
Ethan has a sex dream about Knox and suddenly that’s all he can think about.
These two were absolutely amazing. I loved their relationship, Knox always being by Ethan’s side throughout all the ups and downs and Ethan being patient with Knox while he comes to terms on what their new feelings could mean :)
I adored the side characters Colby, Ben, Brooks, Roman & Andrew!! I am so unbelievably excited for the next book in this series with Felix & Henry and to learn more about their characters!
I related to this because one of my biggest fears is being in a car accident i have a severe phobia of riding passenger in a car because it feels like i have no control. Now if only i had a hot and sexy bestfriend 😩😂 Enjoying this series and look forward to the next installment
I absolutely love a well written best friends to lovers and this one was just that a well written story. This series is sometimes hard to read however it is dealing with real life issues and that’s isn’t always an easy thing to read. Having said that Nicole Dykes writes these traumas a sentive as possible and the story’s are getting better and better. I absolutely recommend this series however if you are a sensitive reader proceed with caution. Another 5⭐️ read looking forward to the next in this series!!!
DNF @ 60% but I actually called it quits at the point where the MCs were having sex for the 1st time, if that tells you something.
This is my first try with Nicole Dykes. Because I know myself and there's no way I have enough time to start a series with 2 released books in it, when I saw the ARC for this and that could be read as standalone, and it totally could, I jumped on it.
Up till that point I gave up, the author had done very little and very shallowly anything that had to do with Ethan's trauma. I wasn't expecting an angst fest but I did want to feel Ethan's emotions of dread, fear, anxiety when it came to his trauma and not just be told he was feeling those things. Having everyone around him, especially Knox, keep saying/thinking that he needed to go to meetings to deal with it, became tiresome after the 30%.
The focus after Ethan's dream became him and Knox and their budding relationship and it was just too fluffy and cheesy.
I wasn't loving the dialogue throughout nor the day to day story telling that was slow and dragging everything.
I think I'll try again with another story from the author and probably in audio format, since new authors work better that way for me.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is my first book by the author and it definitely won't be my last. I haven't read the other 2 books in the series, but this could be read as a standalone. After seeing it was a friends-to-lovers book, I had to give it a read and will now go back and read the rest of the series.
Ethan was in a car accident 2 years previous and he is still deeply affected by it. He may have walked away with a few scrapes and bruises, but his car was mangled and it is a miracle he survived. He hasn't dealt with the trauma from the accident and still hasn't been able to get into a car. He has amazing people around him and one of those is his best friend, Knox.
Knox has stayed by Ethan's side through everything and is doing everything he can to help. There is only so much he can do as it's up to Ethan to make the step to get help. Everyone needs a Knox, he truly loves his friend and just wants him to be happy. He is the only friend who hasn't left Ethan and will never turn his back on him.
After Ethan has a sexy dream about Knox, he can't get the dream out of his head. After he eventually tells him, they do their best to just stay friends. I can understand why Knox was hesitant, as Ethan is straight and has never showed he was interested in him. Knox is mainly worried that Ethan is just clinging to his one source of hope. I'm glad they eventually talk it through, which leads them to move towards more than friendship. I'm glad they moved slowly, and that Ethan showed him his true feeling through his actions.
The pair are very sext together and I loved the build-up of sexual tension. It was worth waiting for it to happen and it made it even more special. They were truly amazing together and I'm glad that they communicated well together. The fact there was no relationship angst made me happy, they had enough angst in other areas without it.
Ethan's story showed us that all forms of trauma are valid. He felt like his wasn't, mainly because all he had from the crash were bumps and scrapes. He didn't count the emotional trauma he went through during and after the crash. His surviving was a miracle, especially after you hear how the car ended up. I loved the support group and how they treated him. They all helped him so much and I'm glad he decided to take part. It is up to everyone to decide when to get help, you can't force someone to do it. They have to make the decision and all you can do is be there for them, and support them when they need it; just like Knox and Ethan's work friends were.
The reason I knocked half a star off was something near the end. I am going to read the previous 2 books, as I have to get to know their stories. I can't wait to read more from this author.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
I know it won’t always be this easy, but for right now, I’m going to call everything exactly what it is . . . Perfect
I’d been not so patiently waiting for the audio version to be released so I pounced on this today and I was not disappointed! I just knew Ethan’s story was going to be my favorite of the series. 🤗 For only 200 pages, it did a great job with the backstory of Ethan and Knox’s friendship and the buildup to their eventual romantic relationship and it didn’t feel rushed. On top of also telling Ethan’s story and how he worked to overcome his trauma.
I just loved everything about how honest they were with each other; there was definitely no miscommunication. And can we say a big Hallelujah for no third act break!🙌🏻. Low angst, good spice, likable MCs. Enough said.
Maybe I’m biased because best friend bi/gay awakening stories are my absolute favorite,🤭🤷🏻♀️ but I highly recommend this one!
I loved Nicole Dykes' Kensley Panthers Series, and her book Hostile is one of my favorite mm reads. So of course I needed to read these too!
I was intrigued by the fact that these books revolve around trauma, and the trauma group called "Spark of Hope". I love an emotional and empowering read.
I loved how Ethan's trauma was approached in his book. I mean, I didn't love that he had trauma, but you know what I mean. It really took him a while to get past it, and it seemed very realistic to me.
I thought it would be my favorite as I was reading, but then... he decided that he was attracted to his best friend, and basically tried to push Knox into starting something with him, and it made me kinda uncomfortable reading it. It was cute and sweet once they both were on board, but the fast-paced journey to that place was.. not that nice, really. I still enjoyed the book, the beginning and the end, but not so much the middle.
Ethan works at Ben’s (Bruised but not Broken) gym, as well as studying. Two years ago Ethan’s life is changed in a moment, when he is involved in an accident that was not his fault. He now walks everywhere as he cannot get into a car. He has become withdrawn after being such a social person.
Knox is Ethan’s best friend and roommate, who has been there for Ethan since the accident. He is out and proud, but knows that Ethan is straight. Ethan is distracted by a dream he had about Knox, and is confused but eager to explore what it means. Ethan and Knox embark on a path that changes their relationship from best friends to lovers.
I loved this relatively low angst book from the third in the ‘Spark of Hope’ series from Nicole Dykes. This series is getting better and better. I love Knox and Ethan together, and how they talk everything through and communicate. Ethan plays down his trauma, but Knox builds him up. It was beautiful to read how easily Ethan accepted his attraction to Knox and never questioned it. I am hoping for Andrew’s story.
This book is was actually interesting. I felt bad for Ethan. I was hoping that he would seek help. From someone that Andrew, recommended and take some medication for his panic attacks.
I felt like he had panic attacks, anxiety and ptsd. Because of the accident that he had. He didn’t seek help that he needed until later on. I was glad when he did. Because it helped him become better and get into a car to see his family. Not only that he can go for the job he always wanted which was a good thing.
Plus he ended up with his best friend which helped him want to help himself and do for himself and his best friend who became his boyfriend.
Excuse me. Nicole did not have to go this hard and by this hard I mean on my emotions.
Ethan and Knox are the cutest best friend duo and I was so excited when she said we would finally get Ethan’s story. My god was it a gut punch but at the same time it was incredibly beautiful.
This is a friends to lovers, bi-awakening, hurt/comfort story that everyone needs to read.
"He says maybe my life was a little wrecked, but it's not ruined.
But I don't feel like I'll ever be the man I once was."
Oh Ethan. How eye opening it was to finally be inside his head. I always wondered what it was that held him back from the Spark of Hope meetings. Turns out, it was his own insecurities surrounding his trauma. He wrongly assumed since he was able to walk away from his car accident relatively unharmed physically that his trauma was somehow less than everyone else's. It almost felt as if he believed he wasn't deserving of help because he felt he should have been able to "man up" and power through it by now. But as this author points out, that isn't how trauma and healing works. No one reacts exactly the same and no one really heals the same either. It is a matter of finding what works for you. For Ben and Colby in book 1, it was unburdening themselves to each other privately. When Ethan finally decided it was time for him to work on his healing, he found what helped was a combination of meetings, private therapy, and the love and support he has from his best friend Knox. Knox, who has spent the past two years worrying that the Ethan he's known his whole life is slipping away bit by bit.
"I can't lose my best friend, but a part of me is afraid I already have.
On that one, rainy day two years ago."
I just loved Knox. He absolutely refused to give up on his best friend, even when it felt like Ethan himself had. Knox was a constant reminder to Ethan that he wasn't alone. He was an ear to listen or a warm body to give comfort. The two have always been incredibly close, but at some point things begin to change. Ethan starts to notice more than just how comforting his best friends hugs are. He notices the fullness of his lips, the lean lines of his body, and oh boy does he start to imagine what it would be like to have both pressed against him. When fantasizing becomes reality? It's H-O-T HOT!
"It's never been like this before."
Ethan and Knox falling in love was so perfect. They moved from best friends to lovers as easy as breathing. It spoke of the strong love these two already had for each other as their foundation. And the epilogue 2 years down the road? Let's just say that it was the ending I hoped for all along.
I just love reading Nicole Dykes' books because they made me happy. They always leave me with a content smile. They are heartwarming. And it wasn't different with Wrecked But Not Ruined.
Ethan' accident leave him shattered. He is afraid and ashamed of his weakness. All he has now is his best friend, Knox.
Knox can't help being worried about Ethan. It kills him see his best friend struggling so much for things that are "normal". When suddenly their relationship starts to change they both gonna need to face their fears and doubts. One thing is sure: they can't lose each other!
Oh my...😍😍 Ethan and Knox are so damn adorable, and sucha positive characters. I loved them so much!! But what I really liked is that love for Ethan is the push he needed to really put an effort to get better.
We all go through some trauma, and sometimes the people we surround us with and their love are the things that can make a difference in the healing process. And this is the real leitmotif of the series, the reason this series is so damn good 🖤
Ok so this is going to sound strange but I'm thrilled that Ethan didn't have some ridiculously huge visible trauma if that makes sense. It was huge to him but he had to deal with the feelings going on with comparing his trauma to other people and it was a really interesting conversation. Everyone was supportive and reinforced that it was very important and he did the work to get toward getting his daily life back.
I thought that Ethan and Knox happened very quickly but they made sense. They were friends for years so there wasn't a huge learning curve to shift into a romantic relationship. I loved that Ethan was like, well, things have changed and here they are without apology.
