About the author

Andrzej Sapkowski, born June 21, 1948 in Łódź, is a Polish fantasy and science fiction writer. Sapkowski studied economics, and before turning to writing, he had worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. His first short story, The Witcher (Wiedźmin), was published in Fantastyka, Poland's leading fantasy literary magazine, in 1986 and was enormously successful both with readers and critics. Sapkowski has created a cycle of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising three collections of short stories and five novels. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s.

The main character of The Witcher (alternative translation: The Hexer) is Geralt, a mutant assassin who has been trained since childhood to hunt down and destroy monsters. Geralt exists in an ambiguous moral universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent code of ethics. At the same time cynical and noble, Geralt has been compared to Raymond Chandler's signature character Philip Marlowe. The world in which these adventures take place is heavily influenced by Slavic mythology.

Sapkowski has won five Zajdel Awards, including three for short stories "Mniejsze zło" (Lesser Evil) (1990), "Miecz przeznaczenia" (Sword of Destiny) (1992) and "W leju po bombie" (In a Bomb Crater) (1993), and two for the novels "Krew elfów" (Blood of Elves) (1994) and "Narrenturm" (2002). He also won the Spanish Ignotus Award, best anthology, for The Last Wish in 2003, and for "Muzykanci" (The Musicians), best foreign short story, same year.

In 1997, Sapkowski won the prestigious Polityka's Passport award, which is awarded annually to artists who have strong prospects for international success.

In 2001, a Television Series based on the Witcher cycle was released in Poland and internationally, entitled Wiedźmin (The Hexer). A film by the same title was compiled from excerpts of the television series but both have been critical and box office failures.

Sapkowski's books have been translated into Czech, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and Portuguese. An English translation of The Last Wish short story collection was published by Gollancz in 2007.

The Polish game publisher, CD Projekt, created a role-playing PC game based on this universe, called The Witcher, which was released in October 2007. There is also a mobile version of the game which has been created by Breakpoint Games and is being published by Hands-On Mobile in Western Europe,Latin America and Asia Pacific.

The English translation of Sapkowski's novel Blood of Elves won the David Gemmell Legends Award in 2009.

3,5 I didn't have high hopes for this book, but unfortunately it turned out even worse than I thought.

There is no going back from there: 5 stars
It takes place in the world of the 'Witcher' series, and in this story Geralt's parents are the main characters.
It was an exciting and twisted story. 5 stars, but I have read better than this from the Polish author.

The musicians: 3.5 stars
It's a very far-fetched horror story with cats (and humans) as the main characters.
It was a strange story, but not bad. (there will be no rereading)

Tandaradei!: 3.5 stars
An interesting horror story where we can follow the 'holiday' of a young woman, Monika, which is by no means ordinary.
It was also a very interesting horror story, I liked it slightly more than 'The Musicians'. (rereading is unlikely)

In a bomb funnel: 3 stars
Here we can follow the day of Jarek, a Polish boy.
War and history books have never been my favorite, and this short story is just like that.
Unfortunately, it didn't really work, for example, the use of a lot of foreign languages was particularly annoying, I think it could have been solved with much fewer foreign expressions.

Golden afternoon: 2.5 stars
An 'Alice in Wonderland' remake.
If I didn't know the basic story, I would probably gave this 2 stars.
(there will definitely not be a re-read)

This is what happened in Mischief Creek: 4.5 stars
The story takes place in 1692 and reworks the Salem (witch) case.
Compared to the fact that the story is historical, I liked it, I would like to read more such adaptations by Sapkowski. (will be reread)

Spanienkreuz: 2.5 stars
It takes place somewhere in the mid-1900s.
I don't see any sense why this had to be included among the 8 short stories. (7 pages of boredom)
(rereading impossible)

Maladie: 3.5
A love story set in the time of King Arthur. (reworks the love story of Tristan and Isolde)
Unfortunately, my knowledge of this historical period is very superficial. Maybe that's why the story was very confusing throughout. (I think I will re-read it, to see if I will enjoy/understand it better, not to mention that for some reason this is master Sapkowski's favorite short story)

Summary: I think this book can be good for those who have not read anything by Sapkowski. But those who - including me - have already read the 'Witcher saga' will enjoy it much less (if at all), since all the 'Witcher' books are of a much higher quality.

W tym zbiorze moją uwagę zwróciły przede wszystkim dwa rewelacyjne opowiadania: „Coś się kończy i coś się zaczyna”, czyli ślub Wiedźmina Geralta z Yennefer(jeśli ktoś lubi Wiedźmina na pewno się nie zawiedzie) oraz „Złote popołudnie”, czyli Alicja w krainie czarów w wykonaniu Sapkowskiego, który w dość przewrotny dla siebie sposób odświeża tę historię. Jeśli ktoś lubi Sapkowskiego na pewno się nie zawiedzie.

An interesting set of short stories by the author of The Witcher series. Some are better, like 'Maladie', some are worse, but all of them keep a pretty good level. Also sheds a bit different light on Sapkowski's works for those who knew him only from The Witcher or Husite Wars.

Opowiadania zamieszczone w tym zbiorze zasługują na 5/5 (a sama 'Maladie' nawet 6/5), obniżam jednak ocenę za niechlujne wykonanie książki. Liczba literówek i niedoróbek sięgnęła bodaj dziesięciu. Jak na taką książkę, absolutnie niedopuszczalne. Ale raz jeszcze powtórzę - opowiadania przednie.

Zbiór chciałem przeczytać przede wszystkim ze względu na dwa opowiadania z wiedźmińskiego uniwersum, które po uprzednim skończeniu serii są wspaniałą wisienką na torcie i stanowią miłe uzupełnienie, ciepłe wspomnienie po bohaterach sagi.
Jednak nie tylko one są zawarte w tym zbiorze. Niektóre opowiadania iście wyśmienite i zaskakujące, wszystkie zaś trzymające poziom, doskonały klimat każdego z nich, wspaniałe nawiązania, stanowczo warte przeczytania, jeśli ktoś polubił styl Sapkowskiego czytając sagę.

10 opowiadań ustawionych chronologicznie z komentarzem autora dotyczącym historii powstania. Gdyby wszystkie historie były takie jak ostatnie opowiadanie 'Maladie' opartego o legendzie o Tristanie i Izoldzie to byłabym zadowolona z lektury. Fajne było również 'Zdarzenie w Mischief Creek' bawiące się historią czarownic z Salem. Dla fanów Wiedźmina 'Droga z której się nie wraca'. Najbardziej przeszkadzało mi nie tłumaczenie całych zdań napisanych po niemiecku, angielsku czy po łacinie przez co traciło się wątek. Czytałam wydanie z Supernowa2020 r. nie widzę go na Goodreads.

Maladie oceniłem osobno, a Coś się kończy coś się zaczyna znałem wcześniej, wiec ocena tego zbioru jest w zasadzie oceną pozostałych opowiadań i są one po prostu dobre, zwłaszcza alternatywna wersja Alicji, ale to pierwsze opowiadanie ze zbioru było tragiczne… inne okss, fajnie mieć szerokie pojęcie odnośnie twórczości jednego z najważniejszych pisarzy fantasy z Polski

Opowiadania z ponad 20 lat, więc poziom jest różny, ale oscyluje w okolicach: świetne, bardzo dobre i dobre. Nie schodzi poniżej pewnego poziomu. Najbardziej zapadły mi w pamięć: "W leju po bombie" oraz "Muzykanci".

Andrzej Sapkowski novellás kötetét valóban az író személye tartja egyben, ugyanis a novellák témáját és műfaját tekintve nagyon szerteágazóak. Megtalálható benne, a tőle megszokott fantasy, de szerepel benne sci-fi és horror történet is. Akiknek Vaják elvonási tünetei vannak, azok se aggódjanak, mert a Vaják világából is került be egy történet. Ezek után már nekem sem lehet kifogásom, hogy bele vessem magam a szörnyek világába. (Legfeljebb annyi, hogy a többi megkezdett sorozatokat kellene befejeznem :)

Nálam vegyes tetszési skálán mozog a könyv, a jellegéből adódóan. De visszatekintve csak a jó pillanatok jutnak eszembe, mármint azok a novellák, amik tetszettek. A címadó Maladie-t nagyon vártam, és persze az utolsó a kötetben, ennek ellenére nem hagyott nagy nyomott maga után. Viszont a Vajág világában játszódó „Nincs onnan visszaút” vagy "Ez történt Mischief Creekben" (salemi boszorkányperek más szemszögből) vagy a "A muzsikusok", ahol Kinghez hasonlóan a horrort vegyítette a fantasyival.

A kötet meggyőzött arról, hogy Sapkowskit mindenképpen fel kell vennem a várólistámra. Ajánlom a Vaják rajongóknak és azoknak, akik hozzám hasonlóan még bizonytalanok, hogy belevágjanak-e egy újabb hosszú sorozatba!

A könyvkemping alatt olvastam a Fantasy ponthoz. :)

Set of random stories written by Sapkowski. Interesting and varied. Including one considered by many an alternative ending to The Witcher's saga.
8 of them previously published as 'Cos sie konczy, cos sie zaczyna' which
is the title of the Witcher's short story.
This book adds two more which I rate 3 stars. Spanienkreuz and Maladie, both failed to capture me.
But if you are new to Sapkowski's stories then the first 8 stories deserve probably 4 stars in general.

W książce znajdują się opowiadania świetne, dobre i słabe, ale to tylko moje zdanie na temat tych utworów. Wielką robotę robią opowiadania ze świata wiedźmina, świat Króla Artura jest raczej nie dla mnie ale do przyjęcia, ale "W leju po bombie" czy "Zdarzenie w Mischief Creek" są dla mnie nie zrozumiałe i niepotrzebne.
