I have now read three books in this series. The first one was excellent. The second was good, and I had high hopes for this one to return to the level of writing I found in the first. Sorry to say, I was a bit disappointed. Incompleted plot threads frustrated me, and I wanted to see the characters grow in a way that energized the story in a believable way. This book does have good reviews, so maybe it's just me being grumpy from the gray days of January.

Story 3.5 stars. Narration 4.25 stars
I kept waiting for this book to blow me away and it just didn’t. The first book was really good though. The second one was a disappointment. This one was definitely better than that one, but still doesn’t get to 4 star level. I know a lot of other people rated it higher and it’s probably just me, not the author.

This installment featured the cold case murder of three decorated navy officers back in the nineties. People find the skeletal remains near the beach. Thomas Austin gets called by the navy to come to the crime scene. Shortly after that he’s told to drop the case along with other local law enforcement. Like that’s going to happen. The navy agent that got him involved is the first woman he really sees(not dates)since the murder of his wife. That storyline is dwarfed by the murder mystery. The woman from the first two books is seemingly out of the picture as a love interest and that bothered me a bit. I liked her for him and then nothing. She also gets involved in this mystery as a journalist.

It wasn’t a bad listen, it’s just that I’ve read so many mysteries and I just expected more. I think it needed more investigation-more background for all the main characters and in this case more people on the suspect list. Again, that’s just me. Still 3.5 stars isn’t a bad rating.

As with the other Thomas Austin books, I found myself not wanting to put down. The characters are developing and we are getting deeper into Austin's past as we dive deeper into the back story as he tries to figure out things he is learning himself. I love learning the back story as much as the current case he if figuring out.

A must read!

I am really enjoying this series. There are plenty of twists and turns in this one and at times I hate to stop and take a break to keep up.
I really like Austin as a character and I hope that we get to see him solve his wife's murder and move one with someone new.

Audiobooks are not my favorites, however, I am enjoying the series by local author D.D.Black. The Fallen in Foulweather Bluff is the 3rd book in this crime thriller series. I am not a fan of military based novels but this one had a good plot and interesting twists and turns. By the 3rd book, the main characters are well known and beloved so I am looking forward to book 4. It certainly makes driving more enjoyable. 4 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

**Entertaining but kinda underperforming**

On the plus side, I still adore Thomas Austin as a character. I like the author's writing style and the manner in which he develops and interacts his characters. Three books in and this has been the one consistently strong factor that keeps me invested. If there's one strength to be had in this series so far, it's definitely that. Because frankly, if it wasn't for the likability of the characters, I feel like I would have jumped ship by now. I've done it before, and I'll likely do it again.

But on the negative side, the one consistent weakness this series has had (even now, 3rd book in), is the cookie-cutter style endings. Things keep working out remarkably well for Austin even when they're seemingly going wrong, and for premises that generally on the tamer side than a thrilling one, perfect endings tend to leave me feeling pretty deflated as a whole. And this entry, much like its predecessor, had me feeling the exact same way: underwhelmed.

I loved the way things started out. Three dead bodies found on a beach from a 30+ year old cold case. I definitely wanted to know the details of what happened there. But sadly, as the story progressed onward, the momentum kinda dragged its feet. Much like for book 2, answers were being handed to me instead of surprising me. There STILL isn't anything to give me a rush or to entice me to vigorously flip the pages. Where are the thrills? Still stuck in book one, I guess.

Fortunately, mildly bummed as I might have been, I'm still interested to continue onward. I still loved many aspects of this story and had the highlights to prove it. Still, I'm essentially clinging to the hope that these first few entries are merely there to establish and grow Austin into being an even MORE solid presence than he already is. Maybe this is the calm before the storm of the REAL thrills that I'm salivating for. Surely things will pop for me like they did for the first entry. We'll see what the next entry holds.

A cold case of three Navy men's murders in an isolated marsh percolated under the radar for 30 years until a hobbyist with a metal detector pulled up military medals.

Thomas Austin, former NYC police detective, retired and transplanted onto Kitsap Peninsula in Washington, has the baggage of his wife's unsolved murder plus a renovated restaurant to run. Pulled into the big-deal cold case, he works with two women, an NCIS agent and a fearless journalist, as well as a cadre of men to maneuver through several plot twists to a grand solution/revelation. Protecting the military by letting the ugly understories go or giving honesty its place on the stage is the question that shadows the book.

The plot twists were the best part, and the whole story paced briskly and was a page-turner. The original turns of phrase put little pieces of delight through the reading of a grisly story of selfish cover-ups. Like, "The engagement ring is like a tiny bullet point at the bottom of our to-do list." The writing throughout is among the best I've run into.

The best of D. D. Black so far!

Thanks to the publisher for providing me with an ARC; this is my honest review.

Another Successful Mystery

This is the completion of three of the Thomas Austin series by DD Black. The series just keeps getting better and better. I know the characters are fictitious but they are truly part of a friendship. The characters can stand alone as likeable but together they blend so well together. Neither one of the characters try to dominate the leadership of the others. They all fill the need as a follower providing the necessary roll as the need arrives.

I can't wait to read the next venture. Mr Black continues to use his story telling shills without the use of sexual content, foul language or graphic violence. General audiences can safely read these tales. Thank you Mr Black

The Fallen of Foulweather Bluff (A Thomas Austin Crime Thriller Book 3)
has everything you want in a thriller. Plot twists, suspicious characters, and action full speed ahead.

When three servicemen turn up buried on a Pacific Northwest shore, the challenge is to find the killer or killers. Thomas Austin, formerly of the NYPD, is tasked with tracking down the solution.
D.D. Black writes skillfully with excellent detail. This is a riveting page-turner!

This book was super quick and definitely action packed. This is my second favorite of the ones by Black that I've read thus far.
This book follows Austin as he tries to solve the case of a murder that occurred 30 years ago in 1992 of Navy servicemen who were killed on Memorial Day. Not only does he embark on that case but he also learns a little more about his wife's murder that possibly gets him closer to figuring out who killed her.
I didn't think Black would talk about corruption permeating the Navy in the way he did in this book. I also felt bad for the victims when it was discovered why they were killed. I was glad however that the one investigator who was kidnapped was able to get away even though she was injured.
I felt like all the characters interacted well together. Yes there was some tension between them but it felt like realistic tension and not tension just for the sake of tension. I must say I did feel bad for Austin at the end of this book because once again, a woman he had feelings for slipped away but this time not because of something he did.
There was a good amount of action in this book. Unlike the last book, it didn't feel forced but it did somewhat feel like an action movie or TV show. This book also had me guessing who and why the victims were killed which I like because it makes me feel, as a reader, that I'm more involved in the story instead of just being a passive observer.
I very much like how quick this book went. I like short chapters and fast-paced action that makes me want to keep reading which this book had. It didn't really ever feel as though I were slogging through this book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who's enjoyed the series thus far, those who like police procedurals/shows, those who enjoy mysteries, books in which the Navy/JAG is featured, fast-paced crime books, books with short chapters and books that deal with some difficult subjects. On to the next!

Review of the Fallen of Foulweather Bluff by DD Black

DD Black has done it again! Another in the series of Thomas Austin’s mysteries; each story unique and a great read.

In this story, a man with a metal detector has found not one, but several service medals, each inscribed with a symbol of an honorable service far above the norm. His friends then joined in the search, each digging in the sand with their hands in the hopes that more medals could be found. No more were found, but human bones were. They knew then, that the police needed to be called and they stopped digging to alert the authorities.

Black has the talent to pull the many factors in a tale together and to make them part of the fabric of the whole story. There is Austin’s café and store, sometimes a love interest, and the setting in the northwest. Then the characters, some familiar, some not, and, of course, the situation that calls for Austin’s talents and forbearance. All fit in naturally to make the tapestry that is the story.

If you are familiar with this series, I know that you will be pleased that it has an addition which will peak your interest. If this is your first Thomas Austin book, fear not, each book in the series stands alone quite nicely.

I must, as I have in every story in this series, tell you that I highly recommend this story.

The third book in the Thomas Austin Crime Thriller series does not disappoint. Bones and medals for three up and coming Navy officers are found at Foulweather Bluff. The went missing on Memorial Day 1992. Thomas Austin is a consultant but has a personal interest in this case. His mother is a Navy Jag Officer. First brought in by NCIS, then shut out. The team investigates the case. Things are uncovered but I will say I was surprised at the resolution of the case. Austin continues to deal with his grief over losing his wife. He is reflective but does want to move on. He's just not sure how to do so. I've been thinking about this series and why I love it so much. I've talked about the well drawn characters but I think there are two things that set this apart from other mystery/thrillers. One - each book is divided into three distinct parts. And those parts make sense to the story. Two - normally mysteries end with solving the crime. The author takes us further so we learn more about what happens after the arrest. I appreciate this. I would highly recommend this book (and series) to mystery/thriller readers. While books can be read in any order, I strongly believe you get the most enjoyment by reading them in order so that you understand the personal dynamics.

**minor spoilers**
Thirty years ago three young, decorated, Navy officers disappear after a night out.
After their remains are found in a marshy area in Hansville, Washington, retired NYPD detective Thomas Austin is visited by NCIS to consult on their findings. That’s where things end- or should. After NCIS demands to cut ties with the Kitsap sheriff’s department, Austin and the other officers decide to keep pushing forward and figure out just what the Navy is so eager to keep them from finding out. The local Navy hero, who was seen out with the victims the night they went missing, has continued to keep his distance and stick to his story after 30 years, but when news breaks about his corruption, is there more to his involvement or was it just a coincidence that they were all together for part of the evening? Its never that easy for Austin and his crew though. This book had so many twists and turns that finally all came together at the end.

This is the 3rd book of the Thomas Austin series and the characters are fantastic and this one kept me on the edge of my seat. I really didn’t have this one figured out until the very end!

Will (Thomas) Austin and Anna solve another mystery? Or will there be trouble in paradise?
When the bodies of three Navy soldiers are found in the marshes of Foulweather Bluff are uncovered. A long unsolved murder leads to a NCIS investigation. Originally the investigation is being supported by the local Sheriff's office and the investigator in charge, Symon requests Austin's assistance. Another mystery surfaces when she won't tell who encouraged her to invite Austin. But shortly after the first visit to the site, Symon withdraws her offer. In typical Sheriff's department style, they continue to investigate even after Chief Daniels forbids there involvement. When a top level, two star general Villeroy gives conflicting stories they begin to suspect he is on some way tied to the deaths of his subordinates. As always, Anna's involvement includes her storylines. But, with a small twist this time.
There will be other twists and turns as you expect. Some will prove to be quite interesting.

I loved “The Fallen of Foulweather Bluff” by D.D. Black. The author was recommended to me on a Facebook page, and I thought I would try one of his books. I have now decided to read the other two books about Thomas Austin, who was a former NYC police detective and now is running a successful restaurant on the Kitsap Peninsula.
Thomas joins the County Sheriff’s Office with Ridley Daniels, Lucy and Jimmy to help solve a mystery about the unsolved murders of three navy heroes. The heroes’ bones and medals are detected where they are buried in Foulweather Bluff by a man with a metal detector. The Navy men were murdered fifteen years ago on Remembrance Day and the Navy is interested. The story has lots of twists, action and suspense and is written skillfully and fast-paced. The characters were believable, and the book was hard to put down.
This book is a must-read for any age mystery/thriller reader and I would recommend it.

Good book. Nice little mystery. Decent ending. But somehow I was left a little dissatisfied with the ending.

I can't think of any loose ends of the top of my head, but I didn't feel like the story got a proper closure. Yeah the killer was found out and put in jail, but that was conveyed to us as a passing comment. I would've liked to have more details about what happened after they were caught, what happened at the trial or during questioning and what kind of a prison sentence they received.

None of it was shared to us, and we all see our protagonists go back to their lives and make merry.

Apart from that one thing that irked me, I felt the whole story was pretty decent. Nice and interesting throughout. Nothing crazy or mind blowing, but interesting enough that I wanted to keep reading.

I'm already on to book number 5 from this series. I seem to like this author's writing style very much.

This is the 3rd in the series about Thomas Austin. Austin (as he is called), runs a bar/restaurant and sometimes is involved with the police department in helping solve crimes. When a CSI Agent contacts the local sheriff, they want Austin to help on a murder case.

The bones and metals of 4 military men were found at Foulweather Bluff. For years, no one knew what happened to the men. Now their bones are found and the Government is investigating who
might have killed them. But, after helping the CSI agent, Austin and the sheriff are told to stand down and leave the case to them. They are going to hide it and Austin and Ridley (the sheriff), cannot let that happen.

Austin is still trying to find out who killed his wife two years ago. This one is filled with lots of action. Loved it!

This is volume three of the Thomas Austin series. In this stories Austim gets involved in investigating the murders of three Navy men which occurred some years ago, and their bodiess rercently uncovered near a nearby lake. The history gets very complicated as information is uncovered and a Naval General is implicated in wrong doings. Austin meets a female officer of NCIS, and for the first time in a long time, his interest is piqued. Clues also come out regarding his wife's murder. The story becomes frantic as more is revealed about the murders of the soldiers, however regarding the murder of his wife Austim comes up against a brick wall. Things come a head on the military murders, and Austin is put into to grave danger.

Once again, D. D. Black does not disappoint the reader. I have just touched on the story. If you want to know more you need to read the book.

A well-crafted plot that draws you in…

I’ve enjoyed this series from the start. Thomas Austin is a fascinating character and with each novel he continues to grow on me while he is drawn into solving mysteries that always seem to find him first, as well as, seeking answers pertaining to his own life and the death of his wife.

This was a challenging mystery of a 30-year-old case that caused quite a stir for Thomas and his associates not to mention the U.S. Navy. What did it really involve and who is covering up for the guilty? The story is rich with personalities, drama and action and kept me turning pages…Another well-written episode of good detective work and personal interaction among the players…I received an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The Fallen of Foul Weather Bluff by D. D. Black 5/31/2024 Kindle

When a treasure hunter discovers Navy medals further investigation unearths the thirty-year old bodies of missing officers. The trio was last seen on Memorial Day 1992 on a beach in Washington State. Thomas Austin with his past navel connections is called in to help. As the investigation moves forward, secrets of the past become difficult to unravel.

While I can’t put my finger on a reason, this character and this particular book just didn’t hold my interest. It read like an all too common mystery, but there was nothing outstanding about it. This is a quick read and I finished it but can’t say I’ll recommend it to others.

This is another winner for D.D. Black. He has created characters that are realistic and relatable. They are people that I wouldn't mind spending time with in real life. There is plenty of mystery and suspense and both intellectual and physical action. I enjoyed the tie-in with the Navy as my dad and son were sailors. I can't wait to see what develops next and I hope Mr. Black intends to explore the information Austin uncovered about his mom's time in the Navy. There seem to be all kinds of interesting complications in that part of the story.
I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion.

I am still liking Austin but I would have loved him to have a bit more more interaction with secondary characters.

Cold cases aren't my favorites but they can be really good if well created. This made me a bit disappointed because the case felt more political than humane. I kept missing how people felt when their close ones had been missing 30 years and how they felt now when their bodies were found. This focused more on other things and the story didn't make me feel as much as I would have loved to feel.

The bigger story behind this series is very interesting and I can't wait to see how that continues.

Book 3 of 8 in Thomas Austin series by D.D. Black. Like the Pacific Northwest? You’ll love this series. You can almost smell the salt in the air and see Orca swimming. A great mystery that will keep you up all night to finish. But, you’ll be glad you discovered the series. The characters are strong and are easy to like. Even Jimmy has much to like. You wonder how such a lightly populated area can have so many murders but it’s the nature of books. Authors like to write about areas with lots of possible action. This area in Northwest Washington, on Bainbridge Island, is one of those areas. So, start with the first book and be prepared to be blown away.
