Bought-the-Farm Mystery #16

Think Outside the Fox

Rate this book
A cunning canine crime-solver meets a sly fox with an ax to grind.

Ivy has never been a fan of the dense woods surrounding her quaint hometown of Clover Grove. When a forestry crew arrives to thin out the trees, however, sunlight exposes dark secrets.

Winter is an odd time to start building a dream home, and it turns into a nightmare when someone is cut down in their prime. Upheaval on the police force only complicates matters more.

Ivy, Keats and the crew never shy away from complications, and they’re determined to outfox a wily adversary before the ax falls again.

The next book in the Bought-the-Farm Mystery Series is a perfect page-turner for lovers of animals and funny, spunky amateur sleuths.

Ivy is drawn to the dense woods next to her property by a beautiful vixen who seems to be trying to tell her something. Keats senses something wrong too and pushes Ivy on. They meet their irate new neighbor, Dawes Croker, who claims to be building his dream home on the property but sure has cleared a lot of land. Croker shoots at Veronica the Vixen and threatens Ivy and Keats. When she assembles backup to charm Croker, they soon discover someone else beat them to their nemesis and now he's dead under his own tractor. Kellan has been sent away on some secret mission out of the area and Acting Chief Dixon Skowby does NOT appreciate Ivy's interference and threatens to lock her up. Yet he dismisses the death as an accident and ignores the evidence Ivy's pets discovered. It will be up to Ivy, Keats and Percy with help from their posse to find out what's going on. They discover secrets and lies, complications and assistance from the environmentalists who are concerned about what will be built on the property. Can Ivy figure out what happened and what's really going on before she and her pets end up the next victims?

This story is pretty complicated. Something has been building and brewing in Hill Country for awhile and this is not even the tip of the iceberg! It's somewhere in the middle. There's something more going on and hopefully it will get resolved soon. The story is a little lacking in humor. It needs more Edna and Gertie. Keats is so focused on his own mission that he doesn't tease as much. His story is touching. The plot kept me guessing the whole time. I stayed up until 2:30 AM finishing the book and felt a little unsatisfied. I'd like more follow-up to untangle the threads.

Ivy is a dear heroine. I love her ties to the animals and the land. She's so devoted and her connection to the animals is very sweet. In this book we meet her newest pet, Veronica the Vixen. Ivy knows better than to trust a wild animal around her livestock and even Percy but Veronica seems to be telling Ivy something. Veronica is a very wise fox and knows more about what's happening to her land than she's able to communicate to Ivy. Kellan is absent for most of the book but he's so sweet and so perfect for Ivy! He loves her wholeheartedly, just as she is, animals, manure and all.

Ash has been relegated to highway patrol, presumably to keep him busy and out of the way. I really enjoyed learning more about Ivy's childhood and how her father's defection affected the family. I liked the growing bond between the two youngest Galloways. They're getting to know each other better as adults and Ivy appreciates her big brother more. He's overly concerned and focused on Jilly at times but that's because he loves her. As much as I loathe reading about children, I think Asher and Jilly better have some soon. Dahlia is pretty self-centered still but she reveals surprising depths, sharing a story about her purposeful hands-off parenting style. I don't know if she's telling the truth but it makes her seem like a better mother anyway. Jilly is the world's best friend. She wouldn't dream of giving up the inn or Ivy even if it meant a promotion for Asher somewhere else. There's not enough Edna and Gertie in this story to really count. The senior prepper posse is hilarious whenever they're on page and lighten the mood.

Kellan's replacement is an old-school arrogant, know-it-all, blowhard who doesn't appreciate Kellan's relaxed country style of law enforcement or Ivy's interference. I don't necessarily blame him for that but the investigation is rushed and his comments about Google are flippant and unnecessary. Ask someone else for help if you don't want Edna's assistance. Maybe he's a crooked cop. It seems like he could be. Deputy Chief, Tye Fenway, is handsome and a little kinder than Acting Chief Dixon Skowby. I don't think he has any influence on his boss and he's also by the book and probably won't accept Ivy's pets' evidence or any of the illegal evidence gathering Ivy does.

Dawes Croaker, appropriate name, was a city slicker trying to be a lumberjack. He didn't really know what he was doing but it seems like his project may not be on the up and up. He keeps pushing Ivy to leave, he has a meeting with someone. It sounds fishy to me. Plus why wouldn't he look up directions on how to use the cutter tractor thingy? He seems to have loved his wife and would do anything to make her happy. Unlike some of the other victims, I think his death is kind of sad. Yes he was clear cutting the property, destroying the habitat of the animals and killing trees, but he didn't see it that way. Maybe he has plans to plant trees around the house when he's done or to relocate some of the wildlife? Yeahh no I don't think so but he's never really given a chance. His project does seem to be shady. It was approved by the town planning committee without public input. The mayor seems to know about it yet claims it's not her call. Marlene Croaker doesn't seem like a grieving widow. She sounds more disillusioned and bitter about her marriage than a devoted loving wife. Marriage isn't easy and no relationship is perfect but she reveals an awful lot to a stranger. I suspect she killed her husband because she is a greedy gold digger wanting more and more from him. The dream house wasn't happening as she wanted/fast enough/at all so he had to go? Percy dismisses her as litter box filler, like the Langman sisters and Justine Schalow.

Fleet Jurgen, Crew chief for Croaker's operation, is affable yet evasive. He may have lied to Ivy about where he was when he wasn't at the inn. He seems a bit arrogant and sexist. His men flirt with Ivy and Jilly yet are not so interested in the available women throwing themselves at them. No one said anything about settling down! Can't they have a fling while they're here with a mutual understanding the men will take off and move on? Dahlia was OK with short-term dating.

The humor comes from the very few environmentalists left in the community. Melvin Yardine, the elderly member of the Dorset Hills Conservationist Society fears a casino is being built on the property. Now that makes WAY more sense than a dream house and would explain why everyone is so evasive about it. Claudette and Pierre claim to be bird lovers and Aster Crooks is the lone member of the Wildflower Society. A hippie, Aster seems to be also a conspiracy theorist. Justine Schalow, is eager for a sensational story and adds her own concerns about what's being built. What lengths can and will these people go to to save the environment? None of them seem truly sincere nor do they get along with each other. That's just weird.

This is one twisty mystery! I'm sure I don't know how Ivy figured out who the murderer was! It was all so confusing!

I accidentally read the next two books before this one so this is officially the last Bought the Farm Mystery for now. BOO HOO! I may go back and reread some before my KU trial ends.

I love this series! The characters and the pet animals are very engaging. There are a lot of rescue animals - too many to name - but Keats and Percy shine.

Ivy follows a fox to an adjoining parcel of land and discover a man who is clearing the land, or should I say ravaging the land. There are a lot of trees being cut down - more than a normal house building would require. What is going on here? Why was Kellan sent away right when this is happening? Is there a conspiracy going on? There is a substitute chief of police while Kellan is gone and he is a no-nonsense man who then brings in his own police officers. Poor Asher has a tough time of it with the acting chief putting him on night duty patrolling the streets.

I found this story very engaging and I was engrossed from the beginning. The "bad" guys were hard to pick out because there were so many people being sketchy. I had a hard time not skimming the story to find out the end, and am so glad I did not. The new group coming to stay at Runaway Farm - a gentlemen's club - made me laugh.

I don't think anyone will be disappointed in this story and I think it was my favorite so far. I don't know how she can get any better and I can't wait for the next in the series. Poor Ivy having to go to her high school reunion (which makes me laugh how her mom has roped Kellan into going with Ivy).

As usual, another great book by this author. Ivy gets some unexpected help with this mystery. The fact that she didn't have to take in another addition to the farm is a big plus for Ivy. While Chief Kellan is away on business, his replacement doesn't care much for Ivy's brand of sleuthing and gives her a hard time. Is there a reason why the replacement chief doesn't want Ivy to do any sleuthing? Or is he afraid that she will get hurt. Read this book and find out for yourself.

I received an ARC copy of this book and volunteered a honest review.

Think Outside the Fox is another crazy adventure for the Bought-the-Farm mystery series! Kellan is out of town whwen the bodies start dropping, Since the acting sheriff is determined to write this murder off as an accident, Ivy, with help from the fox, Keats and Percy as well as her family and friends, has to step in. I love this series, its characters and all the animals. I hope Ms. Riggs never runs out of stories about the creaturns at Runaway Far!

I love the Bought the Farm series, and this latest entry doesn't disappoint. Ivy and crew are battling a new set of bad guys, and this time they seem to be after Kellan, her fiancé's, job as chief of Clover Grove's police force. Meanwhile Kellan has been sent off on a so-called secret mission. His replacement seems determined to snatch the top spot on the force while Kellan is gone. In Kellan's absence Ivy and her posse are doing their best to find out what the lumberjacks in town are after as they dig up holes and chop down trees everywhere. With the help of Veronica, the wild fox, Ivy will do her best to solve the multiple mysteries and trap the murderer and crime bosses before they can destroy the Clover Grove police department and maybe even take down Ivy herself.
I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review. I highly recommend this book, although you will want to start out with book one and read them all in order.

Ivy, Keats and Percy have a new friend, a fox Ivy named Veronica, who is leading then to investigate new mysteries. Of coarse, Jillian and Asher are still around ,but Chief Kellan is out of town and his temporary replacement is a scoundrel named Scowby. Out on a walk through nearby land, Ivy discovers a faux-lumberjack clear-cutting huge areas of trees. Mr. Croaker claims he’s clearing land to build a house for his wife, but wouldn’t need to cut down this many trees for that! Suspicious, Ivy and friend Edna investigate and it looks like something strange is going on. Another great book with my favorite characters solving a murder and mystery! I received a free ARC of this book and write this review voluntarily.

Think Outside the Fox is the latest offering by Ellen Riggs in her Bought-The-Farm series. It's another hit read with plenty of plot twists and zany action that keeps Ivy and her friends and family busy and in turmoil as she works hard to solve a couple of mysteries while her handsome police chief fiancé out of town on a secret mission. There is plenty to love in this book, from all the adorable animals involved in the mysteries to the over the top mother and sisters trying to wrangle one of the "gentleman's club" guests at the Inn. I laughed and laughed at the craziness constantly stirred up in the process of solving a murder. If you've read anything else that Ms Riggs has written, you'll not want to miss this one for sure!

I’ve read all the books in this series and I honestly think the books keep getting better. In this book, we get to meet Veronica the fox. She takes the crew, Ivy, Jilly, Keats, Percy, and the rest of the group, on a journey with a surprise reveal. I love it when I don’t know who actually did the crime and boy was I surprised with this one. I’m not going to leave any spoilers because I want everyone who enjoys small town mysteries to read this book for themselves and fall in love with Ivy, her friends and neighbors, and of course her animals. Grab your copy and see if you guess who did it before the end.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Think Outside The Fox

Another lovely, fun yet dangerous adventure with Ivy, Keats, & the wholemo pack! In Ivy's life, it doesn't take a village, but it DOES take a pack! A large multi-species pack! But without Kellan to save her, Ivy still follows her instincts, & Keates', so it falls on poor Asher's shoulders! Will things slow down enough for Ivy & Kellan to get married in Peace? Well, I'm not holding my breath, because those hills are still full of myths, legends, secrets, & stashes of treasures, jewels & gold. I'm waiting to see ALL the people & ALL the animals working together on one big be all, end all detective job!

I love this book! Some authors can pull you into their stories, make you believe you’re in the pages of the book, take you along for the ride. Ms. Riggs is one of those authors. I felt like I was right there with Ivy, Keats, and Percy; one of the gang catching the bad guys.
Ivy had some extra help from the beautiful Veronica and I hope to see her in future books.
I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.

Think Outside the Fox

I have no idea how Ellen Riggs does it, but I find it almost impossible to put her books down. The characters are very well developed. I enjoy the interplay between characters that are now old friends and meeting new characters. The mysteries, and yes, there are usually a few, are well planned and executed.
When I finish one book I'm already eager for the next one to come out.
Thank you Ellen Riggs for writing these books.

This book is a little bit different as Kellan has been assigned elsewhere and the fox is a wild fox. Those two things add an unusual twist to this story. It is wonderful to see how these characters have continued to grow and their friendships have changed. There were definitely some unexpected things. One of the things I thought was funny was the fact that Ivy is chopping wood instead of turning her manure pile. It sure fits with the story.

Sly fox, missing dog, plenty for Ivy to do. But into the woods? Not her fave place. Buried treasure, dead bodies, and Kellan is gone. What's a girl to do? Leave it to Ms. Riggs to let Ivy and crew do it. Another great story by a great story-teller. Highly recommend the complete Bought the Farm series.

I loved this one!!! As always, the characters are such that you can absolutely love or hate them right off the page! Kellen is away, and so many mice (bad mice!) came to play!!! Ivy and crew try to do what they can. Annie reappears in this delightful chapter of Adventures on (and near) the Farm!! Such a great read!!!

lots going on

From the first I sensed a difference, yet same somehow? The stories enlightening Kellen’s past and secrets with Asher. That brought fun out of Ivy and her brothers past as kids. There was developing going on that was enjoyable. The whole series is good. Love Kellen has a plan and what it is. Well worth a read.

Tree huggers vs tree choppers

Ivy has as new fur friend named Veronica who has an agenda of he own; one that also requires Ivy, Jilly, Edna, Gertie, keats and Percy to find out how the dead person was murdered. Touching ending with a four legged reunion and a 2 legged reunion. Very well written.

Adventure, excitement, mayhem and wit - and a fox who leads Ivy to a secret logging area. But what do these people want? And who is behind it? Twists and turns as manifold as the back trails will have you turning pages and staying up later than you want!

I really liked the way the animals and their human intertwined. The fox was very verbal too. And who doesn't like a good detective novel? I love mysteries and put an animal in it makes for very good reading! I whole hardly rec come this book and now I want to read more.

I semi randomly bought this book on Amazon, becaus I thought: animals solving crime? Awesome! And with so many positive reviews, what could go wrong?

Boy oh boy...

- this is one of the most cringe books I've ever read
- some parts are so badly written, it is hard to follow who speaks and where the characters are
- there are way too many characters that are not or very badly introdused (I haven't read any of the previous books)
- the plot has some of the worst "and this character just happens to be skilled at because the plot needs it to" moments
- the dialogs are some of the most incoherent and confusing I've ever read

I cannot emphazise enough how painful it is just from a literary point of view.

I was wondering very hard, how this book can have such good ratings. Maybe I was just not the target audience? I gave it my girlfriend too read. She disliked it even more than me!

The only good part was the world building and how the characters used their wits to solve the crime.

Conclusion:
If you stumble upon this book by chance, stay far, far away from it! I write this review, because I cannot believe, that there are not more critical reviews here.

However I give it two stars, since I don't want to trash a book series, that just isn't my taste. I checked some of the reviews and they seem genuine. So if you liked the previous books in the series, I'm sure you will also enjoy this one.
