Time to Love a Highlander #5

Saving Her Highland Traitor

Rate this book
She wanted a new beginning. Not love or a life with a man about to be executed three hundred years in the past.

Twenty-first century tour guide Mila Carthson and her godson Robbie are excited to launch their first tour of the season in their brand new minibus. They made it through a horrific year of him being bullied and three deaths in the family. Now it’s spring and time for new beginnings. Things can only get better.

But after hours on the road with tourists who act worse than spoiled toddlers, Mila begins to wonder. Surely, a sack lunch surrounded by Glencoe’s beauty will improve the day. She gets the group settled, then she and Robbie climb to higher ground for some badly needed peace.

While they’re eating, the strangest storm blows in and makes her and Robbie so ill, all they can do is hug it out while the wind and rain batters them. When the weather lifts, everything is different. Not just different, but changed beyond belief. And someone is coming. On horseback. At a thundering, breakneck speed.

The last thing eighteenth century Chieftain Teague MacDonald needs is an unforeseen interruption in his interception of the Campbell clan’s favorite whisky. But his greatest weakness is taking in strays. Especially comely wenches. And this one is that. Fiery as a freshly lit torch, too. So, even though persecuting the bloody Campbells, smuggling, and quietly strengthening the Jacobite cause keeps him busy, this lovely lass is too tempting to ignore. And the longer he is around her, the more he wants her and wishes she would let him save her from whatever terrible secret set her and the lad on the run in the first place. One way or another, he will win her trust. And with any luck, he will win even more.

Mila has been many things. Tour guide. Substitute mother. Grieving friend. But the eighteenth century transforms her into something she never expected: a woman in love like never before. Except she knows Teague is going to be executed soon. She read about it while researching his castle’s remains back in the twenty-first century. Somehow, she has to keep him alive. But can the history books and destiny be rewritten?

After Mira and her godson Robbie travel back in time to 18th century Scotland, they settle into a content life with Clan MacDonald. But when Mira realizes that the chief, Teague, is destined to be executed before the end of the year, she becomes determined to avert his fate.

Time travel historical romance is a niche genre that I’ve had very little exposure to. I enjoy straightforward historical romance, but the fish-out-of-water aspect of it, as well as the ever present feeling that it would be incredibly uncomfortable to have to use a castle latrine, has typically turned me away from this subgenre. However, I liked the idea of the time traveler trying to change history, so I decided to pick up this book.

This is the fifth book in this series, but as the books are standalones linked by concept, I found that I could plunge in without any background required. Mila is a tour guide who is often assisted by her clever teenage godson Robbie, who she adopted after the death of her parents. I liked their characters and the bond between them, as well as the complications added by having two people fall back in time together.

I also enjoyed the mystery aspect to the story as Mila rushes to save Teague, who she knows from work is due to be executed by the end of the year as a Jacobite. Though she is able to convince him to give up his treasonous activities, there is a traitor in their midst who seems to want to see Teague dead. I was genuinely surprised by the reveal of this person’s identity, and enjoyed how the author played with the trope of the other woman to achieve this. The ending of this book was more bittersweet than you see in most modern romances, which I also appreciated.

However, I felt that the character of Teague was not as well-defined as that of Mila and Robbie’s – he seemed to be present more as an idealistic romance hero than a complicated, realistic person. While I didn’t dislike him, I didn’t particularly get attached to him. I also thought the romance between Teague and Mila was rather weak, as I didn’t really understand what drew the pair of them together.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Excellent and very well written fifth book in this time travel series.

Great characters that really endear themselves to you from the first few chapters .
A great story of Mila who finds herself in the company of highlanders in the Eighteenth Century.
There’s action, passion and love, and a great plot.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to write a review

This was the best book in this series so far!

I really liked that there wasn't a big focus on trying to get back to modern times after traveling 300 years into the past. The main focus was changing history and preventing death of the Chieftain.

Yes this was a romance between Mila and Teague, but finding out the traitor to the Jacobite cause really propelled the plot. Mila could stand that she knew her love was doomed to die in a few short months so she bravely took action.

It was also nice that godson Robbie time traveled with Mila as well, so there were two people to watch for modern lingo slip ups. So many of the supporting characters really showed their loyalty throughout the book (a lot of selfless servants). The clan/family feel was clear throughout the book and especially at the end (no spoilers of course).

I really have enjoyed how different each time traveling book has been in this series.

Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

As they stepped outside, she glanced back, noting he had closed the hallway door leading into the library. “How will they know where to find ye when yer food is ready? I dinna wish either yerself or yer people to have their meal delayed while I enjoy the fresh air.”

He kept his gaze aimed straight ahead, revealing a strong, handsome profile worthy of immortalization on a coin of pure gold. “Have ye forgotten Master Robbie knows where to find us?”

There was that. “I have not forgotten. Well—not now, anyway.” She blew out a despondent huff.

“What is it, m’lady?”

A deep breath of the cool, rain-washed air helped fight back her nervousness. “I have never done well at small talk or idle chitchat. And it has been a very eventful day.” The slow stroll across the garden helped calm her, too. The winding patches of cobblestone led them toward an ivy enclosure. With the sun setting, she expected its interior to be dark, but instead, a light flickered out from the arched opening and the walls of thick green leaves. “Are there torches inside?”

“Aye.” He halted them a yard or so from it. A somber, faraway looked filled his face. “Torches are kept lit there. Tended by my cousin, Willie MacDonald, and his family. In memory of those lost at Glencoe. A spring feeds the pool at its center, symbolizing our determination to thrive and seek justice.”

She bit her lip, remembering the overgrown rubble of the place in the twenty-first century. The shelter of ivy carefully trained here on trellises would someday become invasive vines overtaking everything. “It is verra lovely. A wonderful tribute.” Such a bloody shame that wars, the clearances, and politics had prevented the descendants from preserving it.

“Would ye like to step inside and see it closer?” The quiet reverence in his tone touched her heart.

“I would be honored,” she said, finding herself speaking just as reverently. The need to cry burned her eyes as she entered the lovingly tended area that time would eventually erase. A tear escaped before she could stop it.

Teague caught it on his finger and pressed it to his lips. “’Tis a precious thing for a woman to weep for tortured souls she never met.”

She couldn’t speak. To do so would betray the overwhelming emotions that would crack her voice. So, she managed a shy smile, tucked her chin, and turned away. There was no way to explain all she felt. To read about history was one thing. For it to come alive and embrace you was quite another.

“Ye are beguiling me, Lady Mila,” he said in a voice soft as a breath.

This man tempted her. Not just physically, but in a much more dangerous manner. He tempted her to invite him into the sanctity of her inner circle, become one of the few she allowed to know her best. “Ye just met me,” she argued rather than confess the beguiling went both ways.

“Nay, m’lady.” He moved closer, stepping around to peer deeply into her eyes. “This may be our first meeting in this life, but I feel certain we knew each other well in another.” He gently tipped up her chin and stroked her cheek with his thumb. “Do ye not feel the draw? Like the pull of the tides? Or the river’s current?”

“Everything happens for a reason,” she whispered. That had been her mother’s, grandmother’s, and great-grandmother’s mantra.

“And everything is connected.” His coaxing smile made her heart sigh. He eased closer, his gaze focused on her mouth, and hers on his.

She wet her lips, hungry for the taste of him even though she knew it would be a mistake.

“Teague MacDonald!”

His nostrils flared like he was a bull about to charge. Turning his head with a jerk, he let his hand drop away from her and stepped back. “What is it, Lizzie?” he said through clenched teeth.

“Supper awaits ye. All are hungry and ready to eat.”

Mila offered the curvy blonde a smile. “Thank ye for fetching us. Lizzie, is it?”

“Aye,” the young woman said without a hint of friendliness. “Lizzie Jamison. I know well enough who ye are.” She spun about and flounced away.

“It appears I have made an enemy.” Mila increased the space between them, both thankful and mildly disappointed about snarly Lizzie’s interruption. It was for the best. As she had always been taught, everything happened for a reason.

THE REVIEW
Mila Carthson runs a tour company in Scotland with her godson Robbie. On one of their tours, they are swept away from 21st Scotland to the year 1722. Braced with her knowledge of Scotland and it’s history and Robbie’s incredible mind for math and science, they set out to survive in their new surroundings.

Chieftain Teague MacDonald stumbles upon Mila and Robbie as he is making his way back to his castle. He offers them safety and brings them back with him. While Teague tries to learn more about the strangers and unravel their stories, Mila remembers that Teague is killed for treason within the year! As they get to know each other, feelings develop and they find themselves in love and shortly married. Mila and Teague try to work out a way to save Teague from capture and imminent death.

Some time travel stories frustrate me because the ‘traveler’ spends so much time upset about their circumstances that it takes up most for the book! I appreciated that Robbie has a notion about what happened to them right off the bat and that Mila doesn’t dwell in her misfortune. When she tells Teague about his future, he doesn’t freak out and cast her aside, although he does clam up and leave, leading Mila to panic and run away. But, of course, he goes after her and all is well.

This was a sweet, quick read; just enough adventure and sexy steam to hold my attention. (Some felt a bit cheesy, but Teague was so romantic that I didn’t mind a bit!)

The fifth book in the series & my favourite so far, A very well written page turner, I loved Mila & Teague, the chemistry between them sizzled but she had secrets & as a history buff knew how things were going to play out. So Mila is desperate to change history. A lovely love story with strong characters, the story was fast paced & once things started to unfold I couldn’t put it down. There's secrets, intrigue, betrayal & love. I also loved the sdorable Robbie

Mila Carthson and her godson Robbie are guiding a group disagreeable tourists through the beauty of the Scottish countryside. A picnic lunch will give them a few minutes of peace. Until a most unusual storm changes everything.

Chieftain Teague MacDonald is building up his Clan after the devastating results of Clencoe, mainly by taking in strays and liberating whisky from the Cambells.

This is a historical, timeslip romance. Luckily for our heroine she is a history buff and therefore has some idea about what might happen. It's an exciting and fun filled story with great characters, even the secondary characters are fabulous. I thoroughly enjoyed every page.

It reads like a stand alone, but is part of a series.

Great fun.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿I loved this story and honestly think it’s the best book of the series! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

In the “Time to Love a Highlander” series author Maeve Greyson has introduced us to a wealth of fun characters, unique meet-cutes, romance that defeats time, supporting characters that are unforgettable, historical content sprinkled in the stories, and overall entertaining stories that keep the reader enthralled. I have enjoyed each of the stories in this series, but I loved this story!

Take a trip to Scotland and enjoy getting to know a modern day tour guide and her godson as they set off on a tour they will never forget! Twenty-first century tour guide Mila Carthson and her godson Robbie find themselves trapped with a tour bus full of crotchety crones. Neither of them have any luck at improving the tour, then while enjoying their lunch … far away from the hags, a fierce storm comes out of nowhere, and when Mila and Robbie attempt to right themselves after the storm resolves, they quickly see they are no longer in “their Scotland.” - Before they can even come to terms with this new reality they hear the sounds of hoof beats and quickly find themselves face to face with a group of fierce braw highlanders! From here the story takes off and is an absolute page turner, I found myself flipping through the chapters as fast as possible!

As soon as Teague & Mila meet they both feel something pulling them together. I enjoyed how Teague was not afraid to express his feelings, two of my favorite quotes about love & destiny are by him…

“This may be our first meeting in this life, but I feel certain we knew each other well in another.” He gently tipped up her chin and stroked her cheek with his thumb. “Do ye not feel the draw? Like the pull of the tides? Or the river’s current?” “Everything happens for a reason,” she whispered. That had been her mother’s, grandmother’s, and great-grandmother’s mantra. “And everything is connected.” His coaxing smile made her heart sigh. He eased closer, his gaze focused on her mouth, and hers on his.”

“I believe our destinies are woven before we are born.” The faintest smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he stared downward. “Our threads, yer soul’s and mine, were chosen to make a strong tapestry that would survive the ripples of time. We are of the same cloth. We were meant to be.” He lifted his gaze to hers and cocked a brow. “Did ye not sense it when we first met?”

Overall I have enjoyed this entire series but I believe Greyson has finished it with a bang!

Saving Her Highland Traitor by Maeve Greyson is a time travel/Highland romance. Mila Carthson is not the most outgoing of people so when she picks up a load of American ladies with her tour bus, she is already not in the mood. Thankfully she has her godson, Robbie with her. She is his guardian now that his parents have been killed in a car accident. He is really not any more a people person than she is but his private good attitude bolsters her. The women are as bad as they had been warned they would be. It’s finally lunch and Mila and Robbie climb a little higher to eat theirs, ostensibly to look at the weather. While there, a huge wind comes up and blows until the world around them has changed. Robbie is the one to figure out that they have travelled back in time. Soon they are picked up by a Scottish laird and his men who seem determined to protect them. They travel several days to the laird’s castle, a place Mila had been often, although in her time it was in ruins. She slowly falls in love with this man, frightened because she remembers history says he had been executed for treason later that year.

Mila discovered much about love and life in her new situation. She also discovered that these people were not nearly as judgmental about Robbie’s size as they had been in her own time. It was exciting to watch him come into his own, her with people who allowed him to be who he was. She hadn’t realized that Teague announcing to the clan that she was moving into his room with him, meant that they were married. She was thrilled when she discovered that fact. With some help she came to learn that she could not change history, but she had other plans for saving Teague’s life. She was a strong, modern woman who managed to live 500 years ago successfully. The plot was excellent, much better than many time travel romances. The characters were strong, even many of the supporting ones. The book also carried a strong message about making the rules work for you. I enjoyed it.

I was invited to read Saving Her Highland Traitor by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #MaeveGreyson #SavingHerHighlandTraitor

A fantastic time travel story and unique. This time the h and her godson are tour guides in Scotland. A storm takes them back 300 hundred years to a horrible time for Scotland.

What I enjoyed about this story are two people are transported. The h's godson is a very short but smart 15 year old who has been bullied a lot. He has a major part in this story which was enlightening. The h doesn't like to be around a lot of people.

The H is a chief of his clan and the h, because of her research being a tour guide realizes the H only has a few months to live.

So many twists in this story starting with the H's grandma - wow didn't see that twist coming. The H is a kind, protective and loving grandson and Laird.

This story is filled with suspense, betrayal, violence, sadness, joy and a surprise villain. I've mentioned this in another story by this author and is true in this one. I enjoyed how the mention of hygiene, birth control etc were a concerned to the h. It certainly would be for me!

Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 3 out of 5 and filled with passion and love. I felt a connection to this couple and what they go through will tug at your heart.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, stand alone, HEA, romantic, and a tad of steam. A heartwarming epilogue a couple years in the future. I recommend this author and series because they are different from other time travel stories I've read. (ljb)

Gallantry, Smugglers: Betrayal. Romance:
I have never read a time travel story before. I am a huge fan of Maeve Greyson's writing so I thought I would give it a try. Glad to say I did greatly enjoy the story that is filled with intriguing characters, a thrilling and captivating plot along with much humor.
Mila's and her God son Robbie have been whisked from the 21 first century back to the 18th century where they have the difficult challenge to save Teague from a horrible, predicted death. Falling in love with Teague only made it all the more challenging.
Tense, terrifying ending had me holding my breath on more than one occasion.
Betrayals, romance, manipulation, desirous passion that will melt your heart.
My favorite characters were Teague who was brave, kind, intelligent and the boy Robbie would be considered a genius in that 18th century. It felt good for him grow into a confident young man.
A wonderful heartfelt epilogue finished the story off with a thrilling end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.

A truly moving highland tale. Finding themselves thrown 300 years into the past, Mila and her godson, Robbie must learn to live in a time not their own. They are found by chieftan Teague MacDonald and learn that this clan can not only be trusted but that they will become the family they have lost. Teague & Mila’s story is full of delicious animosity, fierce protectiveness and a remarkable love. Teague quickly learns that Mila is not only strong, she is as fierce as a lioness and will stop at nothing to protect those she loves. Knowing that he is to die within months, she sets out to protect him from any who would stand against him. This story is full of tension, intrigue and of course, passion. Maeve Greyson has a masterful way of writing highlanders that are strong, fearsome leaders but also loyal, and passionate, who love with unmatched strength. A beautiful story to the end.

Oh my goodness, what a story! I have enjoyed every book in this series and this one was just as emotionally charged as the others. It's no wonder Maeve Greyson is one of my very favourite authors!! All her stories include passion, danger, humour and amazing characters.

Teague and Mila's worlds collide when she travels back in time with her godson Robbie. Being a historical guide, Mila realizes that she had read about Teague and that he will be executed in a few months! As their attraction to each other turns into love, she is determined to do all she can to change history!!! I wondered how the author was going to thwart history and I was in awe at what she came up with....I did ugly cry at that part! lol

Beautifully written and I look forward to reading many more Maeve Greyson stories!!

Twenty-first century Mila and her godson Robbie find themselves traveling back in time following a storm on top of a mountain. Thrust back into the eighteenth century they are incredibly fortunate to be found by chieftain Teague MacDonald.

Coming from the future Mila has knowledge of many things including how and when the chieftain dies! Will Mila and Robbie be able to shift events and change the future? There are many twists and turns to this tale before we get to find out the chieftains fate. Will Mila’s heart be spared? She never planned on or imagined that she’d fall back in time and find love!

Pick up a copy today, you won’t be disappointed!

Book 5 Time to Love a Highlander Series

I always wait for Maeve’s time travel books. Teague, Mila, Robbie and the McDonald Clan struggle thru much to save the clan and Teague’s life. Mila and Robbie are thrown through time by a violent storm only to be captured by Teague and his men. Mila and Robbie are not very trusting and Teague is bothered by their odd clothes and refusal to answer questions during a time when battles are becoming fierce and spies are everywhere.this story is truly about survival, trust, loyalty and love as well as rebuilding a life as a whole. Good book that is worth your time to read! Thank you Maeve, another winner.

Hard To Put This Book Down

I love these books. I love the history, the characters (only the good ones), the storyline and the ending. I loved Mila and Robbie from chapter one - their relationship and their dialog. I laughed out loud many times. Then came Teague and the clan and one surprise after another. I so wanted to keep reading till I finished it, but life's other responsibilities made me take two days. Romance, intrigue, loyalty and traitors, it's all here.

another great time travel romance

I have enjoyed reading this series and actually, all of Ms. Greyson’s books. This is another great story of a heroine thrown back into the Scottish Highlands of 1700’s. I liked the addition of the boy going with her, it adds a nice addition to the tale. Mila and Teague are a strong couple and have to be one of my favorites now, I would love to hear more about them and Robbie. But I always want her stories to be longer!!! Some mystery, adventure and a little steam. It really is a great read!!!

Excellent! A must read

This is one of the best books I have read. It is well written and keeps your interest. It’s a beautiful story about Mila and her Godson Robbie ending up 300 years in the past. They are found by Chieftain Teague of the MacDonald clan. Mila realizes from the history of his castle that he was executed later that year. Her and Robbie have to try to keep him safe and alive. I highly recommend this book.

This is the fifth book of the series, Time to Love a Highlander. I don't typically read a lot of time travel, but Ms Greyson does a great job with this genre and I really enjoy her stories. This one also did not disappoint. The characters were well-developed and interesting and I was easily endeared to them. Mila, a tour guide, and her godson Robbie start their first tour of the season and are traveling in a minibus. The tourists become a bit much, so when they stop for lunch, her and Robbie go off for some much needed peace. When a freak storm hits, they travel back in time to the eighteenth century and meet Chieftain Teague MacDonald, who is drawn to Mila and is determined to protect both her and Robbie. When Mila meets Teague, she feels things she has never before felt and falls for him. But according to the history she has read, she knows Teague will be executed soon. Is it possible she can change history and actually keep him alive?
The story had a bit of mystery which definitely kept me intrigued. There was plenty of action and the romance between Mila and Teague was well-written. A captivating, fast-paced story with great characters that kept me engaged till the end. A wonderful addition to the series!

On one hand this was leagues better than most time travel romance books I've read. But the book really does suffer from a lack of being something, instead just avoiding being bad.

The main hero is not a misogynistic would-be rapist who feels the need to constantly neg the female protagonist, so that alone was a pleasure and a relief. Unfortunately, "not an asshole," while a refreshing change of pace, does not an interesting character make. I certainly did not wish him ill, but I struggled to find a reason to care about his life. Both physical and romantic.

And I do think the choice to have the addition of Robbie in the story was a very good idea. It meant the story avoided having the main character constantly going over plot points with herself. The characters could have conversations and plan and just exist together in a fairly decent mother/son dynamic. It was a refreshing change of pace.

I still was left scratching my head as to whether I actually enjoyed this story though. There was a lack of emotional connection in and with the story. And honestly the romance was very lacking in buildup and payoff. It felt like they got together because they are characters in a romance novel and that is what characters in romance novels are supposed to do.

A very middle of the road book you will not hate, but can't say you'll care much about it in the end either.

Saving Her Highland Traitor By Maeve Greyson
Series: Time to Love a Highlander, Book #5
Publisher: Dragonblade Publishing
Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars
Blog Rating: 5/5 Saltire Flags

This is about Mira and her godson who time-travel back to the eighteenth century. Next Mira discovers the chief is to be executed and she will do everything to make sure this never happens. This book really sang to my Jacobite heart. What happens when she decides the man she loves will die? She will do anything to avoid this from happening.

Another brilliant Scottish time-travel book that I absolutely love. As Maeve Greyson has been my go-to-author for years. I love her time-travel Scottish historicals as they are always brilliant but so unique and original each one of her spectacular stories!

In the twenty-first century, Mila and her godson, Robbie, run a tourist business giving tours in Scotland. A sudden storm finds them thrown back to 1722. A dangerous time in Scotland with talk of the Cause. Mila remembers her history and Chieftain Teague MacDonald, the man who gave them a home, will be marked a traitor with a horrible death. As Mila and Teague fall in love, she will do whatever it takes to save him. A short history lesson with time travel. I hesitate to read a time travel romance, but I started reading this one and changed my mind.
Mild sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
