In The Anointed Heir, the final chapter of the David Saga, David and his men head home to lead the Hebrew people. Only they are not wanted. Ishbosheth has taken the throne, and he is keeping King Saul's edicts. This means David is still not welcomed in Israel. Judah is the only tribe who sees David as the rightful king.

Michal mourns the death of her father and brothers and is torn between staying with Paltiel or living with David, the new King of Judah. At first, Michal gives up any hope of reconciliation. Until men come for her. Until she is face-to-face with David, her husband who abandoned her.

Two lives separated by conflict and circumstances must learn to live together again. But time changes things, and they are not who they once were.

I’m really glad I read this book. It was an enjoyable read and very insightful as far as thinking about David’s early reign and how his choices then contributed to his later sin with Bathsheba.

David and Michal’s story is a sad one. Broyles doesn’t shy away from the hard realities, but she also ends the story before David avenges the Gibeonites by the deaths of Saul’s descendants, which I appreciated.

Both David and Michal elicited my sympathy. My favorite part was the interaction between Nathan and Michal. Though fictional, it really captured the essence of Michal’s choice to dwell in her disappointment and bitterness or to make the best of the life she had.

I would have liked to see more of the “man after God’s own heart”—David’s relationship with the Lord that we see reflected in the psalms. Overall, though, I thought the characterization was realistic and I appreciate Broyles’ commitment to biblical accuracy

Wow! What a great ending to a terrific historical series!

Author Janice Broyles’ series about the most beloved of Ancient Israel’s kings, is no small feat. David is such a complex character, and Broyles does a wonderful job of not only staying extremely true to the scriptural text from which we get the information about David, but she makes him human. Readers of the Biblical text know David to be a man beloved of God, mighty in battle, deeply spiritual and poetic, and extremely flawed. Yet, Janice strikes the perfect balance, allowing us to see his faults, all while understanding why he was blessed and anointed by God.

On top of this, Broyles has tackled the character of Michal. This first wife of David has remained largely misunderstood and untalked-of, and I love to look at those kind of underrepresented characters and examine why they made the choices they did. There are always two sides of the story and as in most cases, we only get a partial view of her through scripture.

Finally, I must give kudos to Janice for undertaking the precarious task of writing Biblical fiction. The field of Biblical studies is filled with lots of opinions and everyone thinks theirs is right. For this reason, I enjoyed the author’s notes at the end of the book and her discussions on how she separated fact from fiction.

I am sorry that this is the final book in this serious (unless maybe we can talk her into yet another!) There is so much more that could be explored about David and I would love to read this author’s take on it.

I enjoy historical fiction. This is really my first experience reading biblical fiction. What an enjoyable way to bring the lives of biblical characters to life for the reader. The story is well written and follows the biblical account closely. The characters are well developed and believable, making for an enjoyable read.

I have read this author's young adult books, and I immediately noticed a totally different tone in the pages of this book. It is written from a much more adult perspective. The difference is fitting, given the difference in subject matter and audience.

I would encourage anyone who enjoys historical fiction or is interested in biblical stories to read this trilogy.

WOW - JUST WOW
This is an amazing story of King David — but told from Michal’s point of view — his Queen. Her father made bad choices, and she suffered from it, Felt like David forget her. And no matter what she did when they got back together, is was not good, He had other wives, children with them . . . . .LOVED this book, Such a good “twist” on the story that has a feeling of “this could have really happened”. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a fascinating look into the story of David and Michal. Though fictionalized, the author gives an explanation for the parts that are directly correlated to the Biblical account and in which areas she took creative license.

Such a tragic story. The author filled in gaps in the Biblical narrative very nicely and made a heartbreaking story of the love between David and Michal. Would have liked more tie-in to God in the story.
