Fulton U Rivals #3

A Rival's Kiss

Rate this book
Walking away would be the smartest decision, but no one's ever accused me of being smart. Cold, determined, brutal, but never smart.
Willa's mine from the moment I rescue her. I protect her from a brawling crowd and she stares up at me like I'm her prince charming. No one's ever looked at me like that. No one has ever dared to come that close. I didn't know she was the little sister of one of my biggest rivals. Her brother and I have both drawn blood on the field, dislocated joints, broken bones, but I'll never want to show her that side of me. I long to be the man she believes I am, but there's only one way I know how to win-how to survive-and that's ensuring my enemies lose. Once he finds out who his sister has been dating it'll be all-out war, and I might lose the only woman who's ever looked at me like I'm not built only for destruction.
Changing my ways won't be easy, but I'm willing to risk it all for her.

No but the keytonbay and averyemmett vibes here? immaculate!! I definitely have a type and that is PAIN, period. This book really was a rollercoaster of emotions 😭 and I'm happy to announce that Maya Hughes's angsty and engaging college romances are back!

Tropes: secret relationship, brother's enemy, kinda second chance romance. It can be read as a standalone.

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions that I honestly didn't see coming for my neck! At first this may come across as instalove, but once the development started? they owned me.

Willa and Ezra's story was filled with miscommunications, heartbreak, and firsts. I swear they were the cutest thing together, but there was so much they had to deal with personally that at the end of the day it ended up affecting their relationship too, and a lot of the time their own fears got in the way, some times consuming them, other times making them stronger to be together. I really didn't expect this to be so emotional 🤧.

Now, I really think this story takes a lot of patience if you have it, because even though Willa and Ezra were characters that were already in college and pretty much done with it, this was their first romance, so in a lot of aspects everything was new for them. It could be said that they had a meet-cute, and then they spent the whole day together, without much hope for the future, but they just clicked. But then they kept in touch, kept seeing each other even when it somehow became forbidden, and those fears they both had caused a lot of push and pull in their relationship until they were able to get things right. They must be one of Maya Hughes's most vulnerable characters, with a lot of personal issues going on that they had to work out on their own, and if that's your kind of romance, I really think you should give this book a shot. It can be read as a standalone.

Ezra Johannsen is a complex character, he's like an onion that you have to peel back multiple layers in order to get to the center. But once you do I promise you he is a person that you will want to wrap up in a huge hug and protect from the wicked people in his life.

This story gutted me and it was more than just Ezra's story, Willa's family may love and protect her but there is so much more going on there that you will wonder how she is the strong independent woman that she is.

The meet-cute between Ezra and Willa was great, it happens at a football game because that is a big part of their story...football, who he plays for and who her brother is, and yes they are Rival's as the title implies.

The chemistry is great but what I really liked was the way they cared for one another and were there to help each other when they needed it. Be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster I would highly recommend keeping a box of tissues handy.

If you enjoy Steamy New Adult Romances, Sports Romances, College Romances, or are looking for a read that has great chemistry and all the feels I would definitely recommend this book to you.

Happy Reading!!!

A Rival’s Kiss is book 3 of the Fulton U Rivals series by Maya Hughes. It’s a standalone young adult romance. Dual POV with a happy ending.

Tropes:
➵sports/football romance
➵tortured hero
➵opposites attract

Ezra Johannsen has had a difficult life to say the least. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel, he knows that if he gets a pro contract, at least his economic problems will be over. He’s worked hard to get the chance to become a NFL player. But no amount of money can help with loneliness until Willa Goodwin almost literally falls in life.

Willa is perfect for him, she’s sunshine and happiness where he’s broody and reserved. He’s broken and alone and she shows him that you can choose your family. In his case, he already had a group of brothers in his teammates who’d stand by him and with Willa by his side, he’d stand to gain even more love and support.

I loved Ezra and hurt so much for him. I wanted him to find happiness so very badly. I cheered him and Willa on from the very start. They’re totally cute and adorable, sweet, swoony and sexy. Even though they had their ups and downs, their connection felt easy. They’re story is heart breaking and touching and I loved every single minute of it.

Will and Ezra really served angst of brothers rivals with opposite attraction. If only book was shorter not at time repetitive but still I enjoyed it lot, especially Ezra, he reminded me of Keyton so much.

This was so cute! I loved the dynamic between Willa and Ezra and they made this such a fun book to read. Ezra was adorable and so sweet with Willa. I really liked how he was with her and getting his POVs to see how he worried about her seeing him at any bad moments. Willa was also so great with Ezra, she cared so much and tried to take care of him in any way she could which was cute.

Overall, this is a must read for all NA lovers. There are past characters mentioned but I do think this could be read as a standalone if you're okay with not knowing the side characters.

this is my first maya hughes book and it didn’t disappoint. i loved reading about the main characters and their development throughout the story. willa was such a sunshine and she was very protective over ezra. i liked reading about the struggles that she had with how her family treated her and how she dealt with the issue. ezra is very reserved due to his past. as we found out more and more details about how he grew up it just kept getting more and more heartbreaking. i really enjoyed the way he slowly opened up to willa. i also adored the relationship he had with willa’s parents, it was absolutely heartwarming. however, i wish we had gotten a bit more scenes with his friends.

willa and ezra’s journey together was an emotional one. i generally prefer my romance books to be fluffy and with very little angst, but i’m glad this book didn’t go in that direction. they had several conflicts throughout the book, and each one made even more sense than the one before. i loved seeing them grow and learn from their mistakes. i loved how sweet and supportive they were toward one another.

i really loved willa and ezra’s story and i’m very interested in reading other books by maya hughes.

OMG as soon as I saw this I preordered it and I couldn't put it down. I've read the previous books in the series and I've read all the Fulton U books and I vaguely remember all of these characters but I remember from his first mention how desperate I have been to get Ezra's story. Because that boy is just one big bag of tortured soul.

And I can honestly say I loved his story as much as it made me cry. His self preservation made me want to cry for all the kids I've met who have come from similar situations, because sadly his story is all too relatable. And Willo, I couldn't relate to her journey but my heart broke for her just as much. However the love and support she was surrounded by was awesome and watching that include Ezra into their warmth was beautiful and made me cry all the more.

I loved this book. I can't wait for the next one.

Ahhh I’m so happy we finally got this book. It was so great to get inside Ezra’s head and really got to know him, find out all he was hiding. I didn’t expect his story to be as emotional as it was but I enjoyed it so much. Made everything more special in the end. Willa showing him just how loved he was by the people surrounding him had me all in my feels.

I just adored this story and characters. Their relationship was so cute and fun. So much heart and heat between these two. I loved Willa’s family, even though her brother was a real jerk most of the time, and they had their own heartbreaking past and issues.

I felt so much for Ezra and his past and how that messed him up so much. He didn’t get the ending we all hoped for when it came to confronting his past, but that made him appreciate what he did have so much more. It was just such a wholesome story, I adored it.

I also really adored Willa’s bestie and I would love it if she got her own story someday.

Once again M Hughes has brilliantly written a fun, yet emotional and passionate NA sports romance that will make you feel ALL the feels!!!

Ezra Johannsen stole my heart from the beginning of this book and I never got it back. He has become one of my favorite M Hughes heroes, and you need to trust me when I say you have to read this book to understand. His broken past make this broody football player impossible not to fall for and I was cheering for him EVERY SINGLE PAGE. The depth and emotion that this author wrote this character with is simply amazing. I cried tears of joy and heartache for him multiple times.

Willa Goodwin is the perfect heroine and partner for Ezra. She is his sunshine...his light that he needs OH so badly, and even with all of her own broken parts, she still fills him up and they connect like two jagged puzzle pieces. I loved their love - their natural connection, chemistry, and unwavering support of one another.

M Hughes does a fantastic job of weaving their story throughout their college experience, along with this beloved STFU gang, and a few FU characters who make cameo appearances. Willa's family is the cherry on top and I can't wait for more of this STFU world!! Well done once again M Hughes!

A Rival’s Kiss is the third book in Maya Hughes’s St. Francis U series following Ezra Johannsen and Willa Goodwin. We have been getting glimpses of Ezra in the two previous books of the series, getting to know him as the quiet secretive guy of the group that obviously caught everyone’s attention. Willa on the other hand comes from the Fulton U universe, being the sister of one of Ezra’s rivals that he cannot seem to stop thinking about.

While it is true that their story starts right off the bat and in the very beginning, they already meet and have an instant interest for each other, being together didn’t come easy to these two. Having to face many moments filled with the uncertainty that came while trying to build a relationship, Ezra and Willa shared their firsts while fighting through miscommunications and heartbreak. Both of them had issues on their own that had to be figured out separately, but at the same time it was endearing to see them on each other’s corner.

This story was cute and endearing, but I had issues at times connecting with the romance between the characters as a couple. Taking into account that the two of them are new to the romance scene, it was expected as it was their first time trying at a relationship. However, I had no problem connecting with the characters as separate, I liked their development so much and I loved how they each had a doing in each other’s personal issues.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that the author portrayed a very healthy family environment coming from Willa’s family. I absolutely loved how they reacted to Willa having Ezra as a boyfriend from the very first contact, and I adored how they were involved in caring for him as he was already part of the family.

All in all, I can’t wait to know who’s next in the series…I have my suspicion on Griff but I don’t know since Maya didn’t give us any hint at the end of the book!

you know when people just hear and don’t actually listen…ugh willa’s parent were that! but tbh it made the book better!

I really loved willa!! she’s like the opposite to ezra…i wouldn’t say it’s grumpy x sunshine but yeah…it pretty much is!

I loved their chemistry and the DRAMA (it was so extra…for what?) 🤪✌️

i liked how this timeline was the exact same time as the second book but what was going on with ezra because normally it’s one after the other and that’s just not realistic😎

The family/ parent trauma💀 gosh! ouchie!!!

Ezra and Willa are the embodiment of
“i don’t like being in debt to people” (ezra)
at some point everyone needs a little help” (willa) - not real dialogue from the book

I think they’re my favourite🫣 they’re like cool! like i’d be their friends and willa’s bestfriend maggie LOVE HER😭😍

but ngl her relationship with her brother is so yuck i hate him…he’s so manipulative i got grossed out like 3 times…his attitude is too much for me

You know when you push people away when you’re afraid to get hurt…THIS! THIS IS THE BOOK!

did i cry my eyes out? uh yeah…anyways gtg contemplate life

WHEB SHE GETS HIM HIS FIRST GIFT EVER (a snow globe) AND WHEN THEY’RE ON BREAK HER LIES WITH IT IN BED HUGGING IT😭

A Rival’s Kiss is a story that I’ve really been anticipating especially because Ezra has always been intriguing to me since the first book of the series.

Getting to know Ezra’s character on a deeper level has definitely felt like a rollercoaster of emotions at times. I finally understood his character more and why he felt a certain way towards some things. With Willa I really liked how it all just connected. If you read Maya’s Fulton U series then some things you’ll remember and I liked those details. My heart did break for Willa in some moments and I absolutely love her for wanting to live the best of her life. I admired the way she took control of things and simply wanted to do what made her happy.

Ezra and Willa are just amazing together. Now, that doesn’t mean everything is perfect. There are the ups and the downs but the feelings they have towards each other always remain strong and it keeps on growing. I really enjoyed this book and it honestly didn’t disappoint. I always trust Maya to bring out the realness in these characters that captivate you at every moment.

"When the fibers of my soul ignited and charred,
she was there to keep me from disintegrating”

This story is just wow!
I didn’t think this series could get any better but sure it did.
I don’t even know how to put into words what I felt.
It funny, sexy, fearless and so much more.
This is a real rollercoaster of emotions that you won’t forget so easily.
The chemistry and the passion between these two will bring you to your knees.

"He watched me with his unfiltered intensity. An
intensity bringing me new awareness of every part
of me. Every blink, every breath, every beat of my
heart.”

I won’t spoiler anything but you should definitely buckle up and get ready to enjoy a crazy ride!
I gave it absolutely 5 stars
I hope you’ll enjoy it like I did!

Wow, this was intense. And I never thought Johanssen, Ezra, could become one of my favorite characters. If you've read the Fulton U series, he is a known face to you. He appeared in several of the other series' books and not always in a good light. I mean, the Fulton U guys obviously disliked him because he was a beast on the field, but also because he had some quarrels with some of them. Those moments are incorporated in this story, so you'll basically have the 'other side' of the story. Not just Ezra's, but the STFU side of the story, and see how you can misjudge a character by looking at him from one POV (Fulton U's) only. This book was the author's chance to show us Ezra's complex personality, which made sense with how he behaved in the other stories.

Ezra is one of the STFU guys living in The Zoo along with Reid and Cole, which we've seen in the previous two books of this series, and Griff and Hollis. I wonder if there's going to be a book about either of them? I have no idea. Anyway... ever since book #1, Ezra came off as diffident, private, a person who minded his own business and that didn't want others to mind his own, but he takes care of people when he knows they need him. He is hard-working, I think loyal as well, and his goal is to be drafted and finally live a decent life with the money from his football career. His personality is very complex and it would be hard to explain. This guy has a lot of issues and he is not perfect, and he knows.

Ezra is living his life with this goal in mind, until one day, he meets Willa. Willa is a cheerful girl with a bright personality. She studies foreign languages and she comes from a loving family. She is eager to live and have experiences any college girl her age would like to do, probably, but she's suffocating under the over-protectiveness of her family. She is resolved to finally spread her wings and live her life to the fullest.

Ezra and Willa were very different, but they completed each other. He was dark and secretive, she was like an open book and bright. I think they had a love at first sight kind of romance, because Willa was captivated by the seemingly shy and caring guy who hid behind his hat. A guy who was also selfless and in need to be reminded that he had people who loved him.

This story was a rollercoaster of emotions and I have to admit, I felt Ezra's character a lot. And I was happy that in the end, he and Willa got their happy ending.

This was my favorite out of the three books so far.

"If I knew crossing over into enemy turf would be this fun, I'd have done it long ago."

This story was so cute and fluffy plss! Willa was such a kind hearted and soft person and I just wanted to protect her whenever she got slightly hurt. Ezra seemed to be stoic and broody to me at first but he was so soft with Willa. He just wanted someone to be at his side forever, for once and I'm glad that he finally found his family in Willa. Something happened in Willa's family that made her parents and brother Walsh go crazy over keeping her safe and because of that they often came out as overprotective but what they wouldn't notice is that Willa always felt suffocated by that. Walsh especially was so overbearing that I couldn't help but gradually start to dislike him. Overall, Ezra & Willa's romance was pretty cute with plenty of emotional and sweet moments especially the friendship between all the guys in the team and the familial atmosphere felt so homey. I loved the plot but wish it was developed a bit better because I didn't feel the angst I expected, because it was mentioned that Walsh and Ezra are rivals but it didn't feel like they were mortal enemies, the drama between them lasted just for one or two chapters. Though it was another good addition to the series, can't wait to see who would the next books in the series feature!

Thank you Grey's promotions and Maya Hughes for the ARC

“You're mine. You're my flurry of glitter inside a snow globe and when I'm with you it's like everything else falls away.”

A Rival's Kiss is the third installment in Maya Hughes's STFU universe, and it (FINALLY!!) follows Ezra, who I've been intrigued by since the beginning of this series, and Willa.

Their story was an intense rollercoaster of emotions from beginning to end, and I absolutely loved it! I have been anticipating Ezra's book for so long, and Maya Hughes didn't disappoint. It is one of my top favorites from her! The fact that Ezra and Willa have already been teased in the Fulton U series is genius. They also reminded me of several MH couples like KeytonBay, AveryEmmett, and even LJMarisa with the long-distance relationship 😭. Besides, the development of Ezra and Willa's relationship was well executed even though they went through some painful moments for me. I can say the same about the tropes, and I loved that they were written differently than what we're used to reading, especially the brother's rival one!

Ezra caught my eye as soon as I started this series, so I couldn't wait to find out more about him. He comes across as a private, grumpy guy, but he is so much more than that, and I fell in love with him page after page. Because of the way he grew up, he is reluctant to get close to anyone and is determined to secure his future as a pro player. As the story progresses, Ezra begins to become more vulnerable and open up, and it's impossible not to notice how much he cares about his friends and Willa.

Willa is also an incredible character, and I loved her right away! She is a cheerful woman with a bright personality who seeks independence. After a family tragedy, her parents and brother have become very protective of her. She loves them and appreciates their support, but she wants to spread her wings and make decisions without fear of their reactions. Willa became fond of Ezra as soon as she fell on him and talked to him. She brings him out of his shell and shows him that he is loved and worth fighting for.

Ezra and Willa are different from each other, but they make so much sense together. I loved how their relationship evolved throughout the story, even through the ups and downs, because they were always there to support each other. I'm not a huge fan of the love at first sight trope, but it worked perfectly for Willa and Ezra, and it was so sweet to see them instantly captivated by each other. Their connection was palpable, and each of their reunions was heartwarming as their feelings grew stronger and stronger. Ezra thought Willa would leave him once she got to know the real him, but she always let him explain himself and tried to understand him. Ezra was also very supportive and would do anything to show her how special she was.

Overall, A Rival's Kiss was a rollercoaster of emotions, and I fell head over heels for Ezra and Willa as individuals and as a couple. Willa's family was a lovely addition to the story, and the fact that her parents were so welcoming and supportive of Ezra was moving. I can't wait to see what Maya Hughes has planned for Griff and Hollis, but I already know I'll love them just like the rest of the STFU gang!

"With you, I'm not just surviving. With you I'm living and I know it'll only get better."

HANDS DOWN THE BEST BOOK IN THIS SERIES SO FAR. Another Maya Hughes gem! Are we surprised?? Nope. Might be one of the best things I have ever read in my life. High praise--I know-- but Maya and this book really do deserve it.

A Rival's Kiss is the third book in the St. Francis University / Fulton U Rivals series, telling the story of Ezra and Willa. After a fight breaks out at one of the St. Francis games, Ezra rescues Willa and they begin a friendship. The only issue is that Willa's brother is also a football player, who plays for Fulton U, STFU's #1 rival school.

Willa Goodwin has been a sheltered girl for most of her life. Her parents and older brother are overly protective of her, controlling her every move. She wants to gain independence and pursue her passions freely. She is also a softie, super kind-hearted, and loving which makes her the perfect person for Ezra.

Ezra Johanssen seems to have many sides to him... one is Johanssen the ruthless defensive tackle, the quiet brooding friend, and another is the sensitive sweet guy. Ezra is a character that had me intrigued by the previous books. I'm so happy that we finally get his story because it's very special and I hope receives the love he deserves.

Don’t mind me crying over here… Ezra and Berk are two sides of the same coin. I think that’s why I fell in love with Ezra so quickly. I was really able to see how multifaceted and complex he was as a character. I rooted for him every step of the way and truly felt so invested and emotionally attached to his journey.

"I've never had someone choose me."

This easily became one of my favorite Maya Hughes books. The angst and pining were immaculate. I fell in love with them from the very first page. The chemistry between these two was something truly special. Although they come from separate worlds, they were still able to understand each other so well and I especially loved how Willa cared and supported Ezra when he needed it most. At the same time, Willa stood her ground and never stuck around to deal with his BS. They complimented each other perfectly. Ezra and Willa will be everything you never thought you needed and more. Stop wasting your time and read this right now. This book deserves to be cherished and reread over and over again 😭

A Rival’s Kiss is the third book of the Fulton U Rivals Series
written by Maya Hughes. Ezra's story is one I have been anticipating since the first book was released, and, so far, this is my favorite book and couple of the series!

Tropes: brother’s rival, grumpy/sunshine

Ezra and Willa met unexpectedly at a football game when he saves Willa when a fight breaks off at a football game. The attraction between Willa and Ezra is instant, but things are complicated for them since Willa's big brother, Walsh, and Ezra are football rivals. Things are going to get messy, but the love they develop for each other is bigger than any problem they might encounter.

My heart ached for Willa and Ezra, both characters had a difficult life in their own ways. This story is an emotional roller coaster filled with angst, amazing second-characters, humour and romance.

I have no words for how much I loved this book. It's easily my favorite so far.

Ezra has been a character I've been curious about since the previous books, probably because of how brooding he was. I knew Maya would do a great job at bringing him to the spotlight, but I didn't expect him to be so multilayered. He's a ruthless player, serious guy but so soft and sweet deep down. It was a joy to read more about him, to know his struggles and realize what made him retract in the way that he did. He was angry, but broken, detached, while feeling too much at the same time.

Now Willa. She's a sheltered girl who wants to live her life and thrive without the constant protection of her family. Despite her frustration, she is a loving girl who would give the world for her family, which was one of the reasons she protected their feelings and put part of herself on hold for so long.

Also there's Berk and I missed him so much.

I loved the way Willa and Ezra connected and how natural the chemistry between them was. The two were perfect for each other and I spent the whole book rooting for them, as individuals and as a couple. They fought through their own problems and made an effort to be there for each other and show how much they cared. This is definitely another masterpiece by Maya and NEEDS to be read.

Oh my gosh! I adored Ezra and Willa!

"The flood of feelings staggered me. Like a valve released on a dam that had been threatened to burst for years."

When Ezra Johannsen comes to Willa Goodwin's rescue during a football game, it's the start of an irresistible attraction and all-consuming passion. Unfortunately, life has never served things up on a platter for Ezra, especially when he discovers that Willa's big brother is his biggest rival on the football field.

"Hope was terrifying and only amped up the fear of losing the closest thing I'd allow myself to want only for me. A dream. Her."

Ezra and Willa were so gone for each other. Ezra's doubts and vulnerability gripped my heart. He was desperate to be with Willa in the face of his crippling fears. I hurt for him and everything he'd been through. To grow up so unloved and unwanted, and not knowing what to do with it all when it's given to him so freely and willingly. I just wanted to cry for him! Willa was pure sunshine. Even though she'd led such a sheltered life, I loved her confidence and her belief and faith that everything would come right. She brought so much goodness into Ezra's life. She made him smile, made him brave, made him realise that he had so much in his life to be thankful for. She made him realise his self-worth and that he mattered to his friends. She was sweet, courageous and had so much heart. This was a such a fantastic, absorbing read with plenty of emotion.

Ezra and Willa's story was really sweet overall and it was a really quick read. Ezra comes from a tough background where he had been abandoned by his mom and a young age and grew up in foster care. His past really shapes the interactions between the two of them and drives most of the drama in this book. Willa also is dealing with living in the shadows of her sister who died before she had been born but that part of her history isn't seen much outside of the interactions she has with her family.

It sounds weird but I loved the crossover moments with the Fulton U world especially where Brick was involved. We've met Brick before in the Fulton U books but we finally get to really know him as more than just a force on the field. He is a sweet, funny and super intimidating big brother and was not happy with Ezra being around. I hope Brick gets a book if he doesn't have one already! I also really enjoyed the moments where we get to see Ezra and Willa's involvement in some of the Fulton U's book drama and storyline like Ez serenading Willa outside her window or Ezra being involved in Berk's drama with the agent. I always love a good crossover moment!

This book just didn't do it for me.
At first, it was okay and all but then it sort of started to get boring. It was a very slow burn and nothing much happened. I didn't like Willa's family at all, it felt like she was a substitute in her own family, and when she finally said that the parents just didn't realize it. Of course, that was a turning point for their relationship but the book was a lost cause by then. It really felt like the whole overprotectiveness of Willa's family was the major point and focus of this book and not the romance between her and Ezra.
2 stars.

All the FEELS this book gave me! Ezra's story is one I've been anticipating tor since the first book. Hi and Willa's story is an entertaining, fun, angsty one, but it can be emotional at times as their relationship's filled with ups and downs. And Ezra's past, one that we finally get to, is also sad and kept me rooting for him. And I loved that Willa is the light at the end of the tunnel for him. I loved what she is to him. And you can feel that love between them so strong. I loved how they just fits perfectly together. I loved it!

The best Rival book yet with one of my favorite Maya Hughes couples shining through.

Willa and Ezra come from two different worlds, and I'm not just talking about two different colleges. This story contains a lot of Princess and the Pauper themes, along with them attending rival schools. Willa comes from a tight knit family, never having to worry about where her next meal comes from or having a roof over her head, a very different world from the one Ezra grew up in. This duality travels throughout the entire plot of the book and their struggle, love, and heartbreak is a beautiful story to read.

First I'll start with what I loved about Ezra; for the harsh, never having anyone to count on, knowing where he'd be sleeping, or when his next meal would be way he grew up, he is the sweetest, nicest, and most caring individual Maya has ever written. From the very beginning of this story I was completely head over heels all in for everything Ezra. He displayed a vulnerability that is so rare, placing aside pride, anger, and misplaced hostility, instead caring so deeply about Willa and her feelings that I couldn't help continually falling for him over and over again.

Willa was also a bright shining light, bubbling over and pulling Ezra out from the shell he liked to live in. She was the one person who didn't allow him to hide, who allowed him to be someone other than the hulking beast he released on the field every week. The more time he spent with her the more he released that he enjoyed who he was with her, he just worried about Willa finding out about his past and ruining any potential future he could have with her.

Willa too has a complicated past, not to mention an overprotective brother that Ezra has met on the field time and time again. With the odds stacked against them, could they truly have a chance at a future?

A Rival's Kiss is a complete standalone, however I feel the emotions hit just a little bit harder because it is interconnected to her other series. You don't need to have read any of Maya's previous books for this book to hit all the feels, as this book can be read as a standalone as well.

“I’m here. You’re mine. You’re my flurry of glitter inside a snow globe and when I’m with you it’s like everything else falls away.”

Review: A Rival’s Kiss by Maya Hughes. Fulton U Rivals series, book 3.

Guys… Guys! My favorite book from Maya and obviously from this series. This is it. Scratch what I said in the previous books, the author made me love these characters fiercely, Ezra and Willa, were everything together. And let me give you a first hand news, the Coach was as insignificant in this book as he should have been in the first two books in this series. And for that only, it increased my star rate for A Rival’s Kiss.

Ezra is the quiet one of the football team, even with his friends with whom he lives with, no one knows his real self. But one day he saves Willa from a fight in a stadium and suddenly his pieces start to fit. With every chapter he revealed a piece of him to her, and my heart? We’re cracked open from what he went through in the past and the nowadays as well. However, even with all his pain, he still found in his heart an unique place for Willa.

I really loved how strong Willa is, for the pain her family went through with the death of her sister, she still have them at her beck and call. So I found her so compelling when she was willing to share her privilege with Ezra, give him the support, love and family he never had. She was giving, caring, loving, protective and so fierce. She also challenge him at every turn to be a better person and so did he.

They were a power couple, which is one of my favorite thing in the book world. That said, there was a secondary story in this book that made me balling my eyes out. I wasn’t expecting this and the aftermath was healing and yet prove how this couple is one my favorite this year. Remember, sometimes family is the ones who you choose not the one who shares dna. I honestly could read so much more from Ezra and Willa. What an emotional rollercoaster.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC for an honest review.

CWs: child abandonment, death of a child, grief

I enjoyed this one. The STFU books are a lot of fun to read, and this one continued the series with characters I was eager to learn more about. In the Fulton U series we see hints of the relationship between Willa and Ezra, but it was nice to get into their heads and see things happen from their own perspectives.
The book is told in alternating first-person POVs from Willa and Ezra. Willa was an interesting character, and I liked seeing her learn to stand up for herself and her own life. Her family was really supportive, and I liked seeing the strong bonds she had with her parents and her brother.
Ezra was a pretty broken character. Every time he seemed like he was making progress in not feeling completely worthless, he seemed to have something pop up that made him revert back to his anger and his shutdown tactics. This got a bit repetitive and frustrating because I wanted to see him grow as a character and I felt like he wasn’t. It also caused a lot of issues in his relationship with Willa because instead of miscommunication, he just straight up refused to try and communicate anything. I understand his character, but I thought there was too much of the same issues for Ezra that impacted him and Willa.
The pacing was good. The book actually spans quite a long time, but it didn’t feel rushed or drawn out. I read it all in one sitting because I didn’t want to put it down, and I was really rooting for the characters.

Full Circle & Full of Feels

This is the most emotional book of Maya’s that I’ve read and I can only say that Ezra was worth every tear. If you’ve read her Fulton U series, we first met Ezra there. This book takes place somewhat concurrently with that timeline. We get to see the other side of the story and it’s so satisfying in that way but then add in a determined sweetheart of a girl and this book is everything.

From the moment Ezra saved Willa from drunk off their butt football fans gone wild, these two were connected. He was taken by her beauty and she was drawn to the quiet giant that often tried to blend into the background like a 6’4” wallflower. But she saw the beautiful person he was underneath the scowl and stoic demeanour.

With Willa’s overly protective brother being Ezra’s archenemy on the field they had lots of obstacles to get through but none like Ezra’s past. He and Berke are more like two sides of the same coin than they ever knew.

Just thinking about this story has my watery eyes going and my heart clenching. The compassion and admiration I felt for the characters was especially poignant. Willa’s determination and love for Ezra carried this story and he made the brave choice to see the love that’s been around him the whole time.

Get lost in all the feels of falling in love and the relief of knowing you’re not as alone as you’d always thought. Grab this perfect weekend read!

I have been waiting for Ezra since book one of the Fulton U series, and I was right. He's my favorite!!!

This book completely broke my heart. Ezra, dear sweet Ezra. He is closed off, quiet, keeps to himself...a mystery...and when he meets Willa, his world tilts. He has been by himself since his Mom disappeared when he was 7. In and out of homes, he's never felt love. Everything has always been temporary. His meeting Willa was by chance. At a football game they both happened to be attending, a fight breaks out and he saves her as she takes a tumble down the bleachers. Seems like fate, right? All up until Ezra finds out that 1) Willa attends St Francis U, their rival and 2) Willa is the sister of his enemy, Walsh Goodwin. They are rivals on and off the field.

"I've never had someone choose me."
Ezra character is so endearing. He's so lost and lonely and feels worthless. He's never had anything. No family, no money, no love, nothing permanent. It's just heartbreaking at how he see's himself.

"I can't be her for them. I'm me. I'm Willa.
Willa is such a beautiful soul. She lives in the shadow of a sister that died before she was even born. Overprotected, over-loved, over-shadowed. This in itself is heartbreaking to have to live to be someone else. But her heart is so big and so loving.

I loved this story. My favorite of all the STFU and FU series (you see what the author did there right?? lol). By far, my favorite!!
