A beautiful collection of Ukrainian and American recipes put together by returned Peace Corps Ukraine volunteers compiled by the Alliance for Ukraine with proceeds from sales going to Ukraine as the country continues defending its land and sovereignty in this senseless war!
This is my favorite cookbook. I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lypovets, Ukraine from 2005-07 and as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer in Ternopil, Ukraine from 2011-12. Somehow, in those 36 months in Ukraine, I acquired three different editions of Babucya’s Kitchen. This new, improved version, made in response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, brings together a variety of recipes from the different editions. RPCV stories and commentary about Peace Corps service are sprinkled throughout the book, advancing the Peace Corps goals to any reader.
I love this book. Not only did I buy it for myself, but I purchased copies to share with friends and family I hold dear so they can share a piece of my Peace Corps experience with me.
What a treasure -- a beautiful book full of delicious Ukrainian recipes, made to support Ukraine. And for me, it brings back so many wonderful memories from my Peace Corps days in Ukraine.
Every Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine is sent to their village, town, or city with a stack of hand-bound books with various resources written to help volunteers assimilate into their community and effectively do their work. One of those books ended up being used, cherished and beloved more than the others by nearly every volunteer: Babusya's Kitchen. A collection of Ukrainian and American recipes lovingly put together by volunteers, staff, and friends of Peace Corps. As volunteers traveled across the beautiful country of Ukraine to visit other volunteers, you'd find a very used, stained and flour-smudged Babusya's Kitchen Cookbook in every kitchen.
Although the design is gorgeous, the photos reflect the beauty, cultural richness and diversity of Ukraine, and the recipes are delicious, what makes this book special is the love and care that has gone into each page over the years. Each recipe brought people closer, gave comfort to lonely hearts, created lifelong friendships and forged unforgettable memories. It'll be the first Cookbook you can't put down until you reach the end.
With the purchase of this book, you'll learn more about the people, culture, language and food of Ukraine and why it's so important for it all to be preserved in the face of Russia trying to erase it. The volunteers' love for Ukraine is contagious, and the window it gives into the lives of Peace Corps Volunteers is fascinating. You'll be booking a flight to Ukraine the second Ukraine finds it's well-deserved peace to eat the hearty and delicious food and meet the resilient and hospitable people.
All proceeds from the sale of this book will go towards projects that serve internally displaced Ukrainians that fled to safer parts of Ukraine.
** Disclaimer: I was a minor contributor to this version of the book, but I've been a fan of the cookbook since 2011 when I first recieved it.
