This book is rated R. This is a mature book that contains intense violence, mature language, and strong sexual themes. Intended for readers 18 years and older.
I first found this book on another website before it was published and ABSOLUTELY fell in love. This book will always stay as one of my top fantasy reads. I could go back and read this book over and over and never grow tired of it. Such a unique world with a well thought out plot, and characters that I love! The book truly sucks you in and certainly caused me to lose track of time because I just could not put it down. K.J. Ferguson you are a legend and I cannot wait until book two!
If you are looking for a stereotypical fantasy romance that isn't deep, this book is fine. The plot is predictable and characters are all the typical tropes. Main character is a Mary-Sue with a temper.
Cons (Spoilers): *There is an unfortunate amount of internalized sexism. The female character is just supposed to deal with the male being a jealous man who yells and almost murders people because he is a dragon?! Yikes. Then they get to have hot make-up sex because she says she needs to accept his dragon and he feels the smallest bit bad? Double yikes.
When the final battle happens, all the women stay inside including two supposedly strong side women. They all train together but cannot fight in the main fight for some reason? Keeping the two shifter ladies away from the battle was just sexist and unnecessary.
*The magic system does not make any sense and does not stay consistent throughout the book. The group is staying at a dragon fortress and in the final battle, none of them turn into their dragon forms? Brenya is an elemental and rune Fae. Fae were mentioned living in the Aviary, yet we don't learn about any of them. She never works with any of them with magic, even though Fae may or may not be able to cast some magic? The wolf shifters also don't shift regularly even though they are strongest in their wolf form. The shifting and who has magic is all over the place and does not make sense. It seems as if the weakest races are the main ones of the story because they struggle in a fight with all of the others. The side races seem way too over powered for the world created. Tiny sprites can move a massive tree and forest system but one 200 year old dragon drains his energy by breathing fire one time?
Overall, it's not a great representation of high fantasy romance. I enjoy a great steamy novel, but we do not need to fall back on all the same tropes of enemies to lovers, mysterious hot dude is kinda sensitive and into bad bdsm, plain woman is the most powerful person I'm the world and needs two weeks of training, etc.

OH. MY GOD. SHOOK. I read this book on Wattpad, so I was expecting a Wattpad-worthy fantasy book. WRONG. This was a fucking masterpiece. I loved every second of this book and I devoured it in 3 days.
The actual plot was amazing. It was a perfect balance between romance and a fantasy plot. There was an actual story going on besides Brenya and Dristin’s love. I absolutely adored the hunt and riddles to find the runes, and the bonding of all of the characters. Sure, there was definitely some good steam and romance, but the plot to finding the runes was chefs kiss
Okay, and can we talk about Brenya’s character development??? AMAZING. I usually don’t like a huge character development because it’s almost always corny and stupid, but this wasn’t corny AT ALL. Brenya went from a dirt-poor little human to this intelligent, fearless queen. She trains herself in strength and magic, becomes more outgoing, makes a bunch of great friends, and overall evolves from a naïve princess to a dominating queen. SPECTACULAR.
I am so grateful that I found this masterpiece in Wattpad. This is by far one of the best fantasy romance books I’ve ever read.
