Pero, por algún motivo inexplicable, he enfermado y te he conocido.

Giving Ichigo Domei a five-star rating would probably have been on the slur of the moment because it's not perfect so let's just say it's 4.5 stars. But the feeling that it leaves you with after reading is something that warms your heart, wells you up and just leaves you with all these emotions; hence, the rating. But I'll be mentioning the crucial "flaws" that I found because that's just easier.

I've been reading a lot of books by Japanese writers (but I will not generalize here so I would just say that based on what I have read so far, most of which fall under the same genre as Ichigo Domei), I'm used to books that are short, fast-paced and without concrete resolution. Perhaps because I've read the translated version online which I think was done very well (though I have no way of knowing) but it was translated with simplicity yet vividness that it's a legit enough.

It's a light read because I finished it in a span of 3-4 hours but there's so emotions involved. It's also fast-paced which is also like what the other novels I read are like. There also a lack of description when it comes to the characters so I actually can't picture how they look like. (I didn't know the narrator was a boy until he was being referred to as "he") Instead (at least in the beginning), there was a really long part about Tetsuya's baseball game, this happened twice and I skipped the second part because I know nothing about baseball and even if I read it again and again, I probably still won't understand. But I just wished that the part spent there was spent somewhere else although yes, it was for build-up and characterization. But like the other Japanese novels I've read (or even shoujo, it's a similar approach), this is direct and it doesn't meddle.

Of course, I also question the validity of the feelings of mainly Ryoichi and Naomi. This is common in shoujo novels though and the other Japanese novels I've read recently. This is why the fast-paced nature is problematic. There's characterization but the relationship leaves a lot of question marks.

But still, it's very heartfelt, warm and filled with emotions. When I think about what this novel wants to say (a coming-of-age novel), it's this: to show death, deal with death, live with death, embrace death, have hope in the face of death and be happy even in death. These adolescents, 14-15 years old, thinking about life, suicide, the future and death. It's growing up...yes, but it's also learning to deal with "reality" at a young age. It's embracing death because it allowed you to meet someone and made an impact in your life even if that's the situation you're both in. In the end, it's about being thankful. That's why it's raw despite not being too heavy on dialogue or description, it's the simplicity that touches you as you read this.

Finally, I want to comment that Naomi is not a manic pixie dream girl. Yes Ryoichi is full of doubts with himself until he meets her. But the very reason, that because of Ryoichi (and Tetsuya) that she's able to be happy and thankful despite the circumstances that they meet is why she is not a manic pixie dream girl. Oh yes, I also loved how this novel shows you what t's like to be a student in Japan. It's no joke. And it's probably where the streotype that Asians are smart comes from. Yes, Asian society value education. A lot. (Yes, I'm Asian) We tend to see education as the way to success (it's a very traditional view I know) and in this novel, you can really see how burdening it is. And I sympathize with all these. I think it adds a bit more to the whole "reality" thing.

And a final comment. If you loved this, I suggest watching (or reading) Shigatsu Wa Kimi Uso (Your Lie in April), it's anime but there's also a manga (and they stayed really close to their respective adaptations). I mention this because Shigatsu draws parallels with Ichigo Domei, is referenced (dialogue) and even the book was being read by Kaori (Naomi's parallel). If you want a more visual representation, read the manga. If you want an animated representation with the music (yes the MC plays piano too, Kaori plays the violin) and the beautiful (yes it is I swear) animation, you should really watch it. A note of warning, prepare tissues. I call it Feelgatsu for a reason.

I wanted to read this book right after I discovered that it was a huge inspiration for Your Lie in April. I loved the anime/manga, so I knew I had to read Ichigo Doumei right away.

It was beautifully written, and it left me with a bittersweet feeling. A boy who wanted to die met a girl who wanted to live. She taught him to hold onto human life as tightly as he could, for impermanence of life is both a blessing and a curse.

It really touches on the difficulty of being a student in Japan. People tend to romanticize it, when in reality its very stressful and overwhelming. I think the case with Ryoichi is that he wasn't afraid of dying, he was afraid of living. Living means you have to keep bearing the sorrows of life. Living means you have to keep going; no matter how hard it is or how tired you feel. Dying is easy, but living is harder.

With that being said this book is not perfect. It's fast paced, and the issue with this is that a serious topic failed to be displayed in a way which wasn't rushed. There was a lack of depth with Naomi, and With more time spent on interaction and emotions involved, I think there would have been a greater impact.

I would have loved to see more time spent on Naomi. I wanted to feel sad for her, and I wanted to love her, yet since the novel only had a few parts with her, I failed to have that emotion towards Naomi. There are quite a few parts that should've been cut out, for instance I don't want to read 10+ pages of just a baseball match.

Overall though, it was a worthy read and you could finish it in a few hours. Keep in mind that many things can be lost in translation. I liked the overall message of it, and I don't regret reading it.

The meaning of life is simply to live. Live your life, just live.

So this book serves as a significant plot point in Your Lie in April, so I decided to dig up a copy. Unfortunately there is no official English translation, but there is a passably readable fan translation under the title "Alliance of the 15s".

If it did receive a proper English release, it'd be sure to win the Newbery Medal For Books that Ruthlessly Crush the Joy in Life from Youngsters and Teach Them that Living Is an Endless Hell of Pain and Misery Where Everything Precious to You Is Snatched Away in Capricious but Obvious Acts of Authorial Sadism.

So, yeah, it's the template for Your Lie in April.

Read an online version of this book translated into English from Japanese. A book fill of despair yet with hints of hope. In America it is hard for us to understand the pressure that students in Japan in other Asian countries are under. They are required to take exams to get into high school and depending on your score, will decide which school you go to and what your future will look like. Do well on the exam; enter a good school; go to a good university; get a degree; get a good job. Do poorly and who knows how your life will turn out. What enormous pressure. The protagonist is a fifteen year old boy with thoughts of suicide because he can't see the point of it all. He thinks of suicide all the time until thought fate he meets a girl in a hospital dying from cancer. She puts him on an emotional roller coaster ride but makes him realized how silly suicide is. As a person dying from a disease, she doesn't have that choice yet chooses to fight for her life in a fierce and courageous way. In the end he realizes that he loves her and in this despair he finds hope. A very interesting story about Japanese culture and living life in quiet desperation.

Another beautiful short love friendship story.....

Some beautiful lines.....
"Even if you mess up when it comes to the real deal, it’s not like that means your life is over."
"....you’ll realize this someday, but when you live a long life, people important to you will die one after another. This is something that can’t be stopped."
"I grieved this reality, it wouldn’t make a difference. And although it may come across as harsh to say, it is true that we will have to continue living after Naomi departs from this earth."

"The moment we meet someone, we are never truly alone."
We will no longer be.

Though we may share different stories,
We may share the same problems.
The same pain.

Even though we are all different,
what makes us human will always be the same.

This book is featured in a couple notable scenes in Your lie in April—my first & still favorite anime show—which prompted me to finally give it a shot, years after I first saw the show. I had no idea what a big influence this book has on the second half of Your lie in April. The parallels between the two are striking. In YliA, viewing Kaori's "double suicide" quote in the context of this book, which (presumably) she reads after realizing Kousei had read it as well makes so much more sense & really adds to the weight of that moment.

In Ichigo Dōmei, our main character Ryouichi is silent for most of the book, & most of his characterization comes from his thoughts. I'm not sure if this is a cultural thing for Japanese audiences, but as a quieter person myself I appreciated him & felt somewhat understood in this way. He clearly struggles with depression & isn't quite sure how to articulate it or if he even should. His growth throughout the book is easily the best part.

Tetsuya makes a great foil to Ryouichi (he says anything & everything that comes to mind) & a perfectly likable best friend. You can't help but root for him as he encourages everyone he meets, in spite of his own struggles. Sweet Naomi is another very likable character. I don't know what she sees in Ryouichi—he only says like three words to her in total (only slightly exaggerating)—but I love to see a character inspire hope & life in another.

My English translation of Ichigo Dōmei by Aya M. was found online, & while it is a little rough around the edges, it conveys the story well enough. It's quick, an easy read, & while heavy in subject matter, brought me joy afterward. It was well worth my time.

After watching the Your lie in April I find out that in anime there was a referral of this book and after reading I think it's a worth reading because it's gives more meaning to the hospital roof talk in anime and also the book stand alone is very good yes it was a little dark but how the story goes and our main character way of thinking changes with time is so much good if someone is searching for a book in which their is deep meaning and which force you to think about even after it ends than it is good to go. Yes their is some part is boring to which feel like the author stretched the story a little bit. But in the end it's a worth reading

A simple story of 3 characters and their reasons for choosing whether to live or die. Going in without much of an expectation, I was pretty much a bit shocked by how dark the theme is. Everyone has that one thing that pushes them to continue on life; be it their goal, going with the flow or lack of choices. Some parts are too much baseball or music talk that I found quite boring. Hence the rating.

"Live, you hear me?"

Yeah, loud & clear.

The ending, though. The ending!!

I know she'll be dead by the end of the story, but I didn't expect that the author just gave us literally three-four paragraphs expansion after she's gone. It was what left me speechless and couldn't really put into words what I felt. And the way that Kitazawa got permission to pursue his career on professional pianist kinda rushed as well. It felt like the author was given limited amount of pages and she didn't realise she almost spent it all when the story still need to have longer storyline.

Now, to the characters. I really like the characterisation of Tetsuya. The way he's full of himself and arrogant at first kinda annoying, but as the story went by, it what makes him human, afterall. How he was afraid that he'll forget Naomi in near future is like a call-out to me LOL. The chemistry between Kitazawa and Tetsuya was my favourite in the story. I didn't quite like Naomi though, I have to be honest. :P

But now as I come to think of it, the rushed ending was brilliant strategy. The conversation between Tetsuya and Kitazawa at the end, though. 。:゚(;´∩`;)゚:。

alliance of the 15s is the light novel your lie in april was written after. the first 50 pages were unnecessarily detailed baseball game descriptions, which i’d let slide as the rest of the story was quite good.

4/5

“you’re a strange person. you came to the hospital to visit me, and yet all this time, you haven’t said a word. do you want to commit double suicide w/ me?” 🏥
