Lily Grant's husband James disappeared two years ago on Christmas Eve and no trace of him has ever been found. She haunts the halls of Silent Elms, a grand manor house, awaiting his return and torturing herself as to his fate.
Life is made even more miserable for Lily when her in-laws arrive to celebrate Christmas. They all loathe her and resent her close relationship with their father, the patriarch of the family. The arrival of a mysterious stranger who closely resembles James initiates a chain of strange events at Silent Elms that threaten Lily's sanity, leading to a climax which could cause the house of Grant to fall.

Author of over seventy books so far. Living on the beautiful west coast of Scotland with my husband, twin daughters and a cat called Mavis, although I am originally from Lancashire in the north of England.
My tastes in all things are eclectic, which extends to my writing. Although I primarily write crime books - especially gangland thrillers - I also write gothic historical romance and fantasy. I publish on Amazon Kindle and some of my novels are available in paperback too. I also have a traditional publishing contract with Boldwood Books.
When I'm not writing - which isn't very often - I enjoy reading Daphne Du Maurier, Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson, MR James and the Brontes, among many others. I also enjoy swimming, walking and spending time with my family.
I have no idea why this book is so highly rated. The writing is not especially strong, and it's annoying to read so many run-on sentences. There wasn't nearly enough buildup to support the murderers' reveal, and It went completely off the rails in the middle. The only part I truly enjoyed was when Lily thwarted Edgar and Treadwell's attempt to murder her. The ending was terribly unsatisfying. I don't understand the point of letting most of the people who were cruel to the protagonist off without any significant consequences, particularly Annabella. I hope Lily haunts them all incessantly.

I.didn't think I'd read all.of.this at the begging but it turned into a good gothic horror. It took a while to figure out who was causing it all and it wasn't who I expected . Nice twist
Good gothic mystery with lots of twists and turns. The first half of the book was a little slow (I think it was setting the atmosphere) but then it really picked up.
