Knowing better than to blame fate on his arrival on Neo Firma in the middle of his long-lost family’s crisis, Quinn Hoffen will have to make a hard decision. The Afterwar Saga is an independent series set in the Privateer Tales universe.
The twin children of the famous Hoffens, Quinn and Olivia, are on a rescue mission through multiple wormholes and space anomilies to reach another galaxy. Olivia is influenced by the Iskstars, the alien race that had assisted the elder Hoffens to defeat the Kroerak, and are now guiding Olivia to the planet Grünholz. Liv and Quinn are helped by best friend and fellow sled racer Adeline "Addy" Chen Hill. After a long and arduous journey, they land on a starship pad near the city of Neo Firma. There they meet a mountain of muscle and bone named Cassius James and his aunt Celina Dontal. As it turns out, they're family, of sorts, through the man they'd called "Uncle Nick" their whole lives! Celina and Cassius's mother, Jennifer James, had been a part of the senior Hoffens' saving two galaxies from the Kroerak invasion. Jennifer's husband Jack is Uncle Nick's brother. Now you see? The Iskstars had also used their powers to enabled their barren mother to get pregnant. Whether by intent or purpose, the twins have unique abilities. Using their talents, Quinn and Liv, with the help of Addy and Cassius, have to rescue Jennifer from pirates. The characters are familiar, brilliant and smooth. The bad guys are in-your-face obvious evil or the kind you never see coming. This is going to be a great storyline! Great cliffhanger to the next book in the series. And the sled racing is terrific! This is an amazing read!
Just like Rookie Privateer years ago, McFarlane takes readers on a compelling journey that is not only for the reader but the characters as well. They get to know each other as the reader does and you end up feeling like another of the characters and are along for the ride. That this ties in with the older story is just icing on the cake of a wonderful story that stands on its own. I'd clean the septic lines in a 150 year old ship without a shower available if it would get the next book into my hands sooner.
I completely enjoyed meeting Quinn, Olivia and Addy! McFarlane has equaled the Privateer series, which I also enjoyed. The back story, revealed in drips and squirts leaves many directions for the story to turn, so you must wait for the plot to unfold, only knowing that Quinn is ready, with Addy and Liv as essential elements, to lead them through their adventures. Ready for Book 2!
Very good and interesting new storyline in the Privateer Tales universe. I wasn't sure what to expect when Jamie McFarlane decided to go down this different path. I don't know why I wondered or was apprehensive. This was a return to his best form of the early days of Privateer Tales. A reinvigorated cast of characters and a smaller, more bite-sized set of challenges, made this one of my favorite McFarlane books. I'm really looking forward to the next one in this series.
I started this book, thinking it would be a rehash of the previous Liam Hoffen stories. Happily, it is not.
The main protagonists still manage to get themselves into as much, if not more trouble than their parents, providing an entertaining story with some great characters.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Just like Liam Hoffen, Quinn Hoffen is going to set the Galaxy on it's ear. The pirates in the area had best give their souls to God because Quinn is going to have their ass. Can't wait for number two.
This just didn't quite hit me right. Lots of action throughout and solving problems, characters that were fun, but the viewpoint switches seemed off and swinging from bumbling kids to trained defenders was awkward. They should be smarter than that.
This book was reminiscent of Heinlein’s juvenile stories. However, the cinematic writing style was problematic. This was particularly evident during the last third of the book. I’m looking forward to the next book.
Interesting and entertaining story with a cast of characters with unusual abilities and a past history that draws you into their story. There is an unresolved mystery which will lead you to the next book.
I hope that this not a spoiler in my review title? I just wanted to say that it was great to read more with the children and meeting old friends of mom and dad. A fan!
This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
Interesting read . Some very enjoyable plot twists that should keep your attention. I do want to read more of this series, my curiosity has been invoked for sure.
