“Do you remember what I told you? That last night...?”
The rain poured down like tears on our faces. He raised a hand to touch my cheek, his eyes full. “I’ll always come back to you.”
“I remember,” I said softly.
Josephine Clark is trapped. A harrowing past haunts her every time she looks in the mirror, and she can’t escape the violence of her everyday life. More and more, her thoughts turn to Evan Salinger, the boy she knew in high school. The boy they called a mental case. A loner. A freak. The boy who seemed to know things no one could know. For a few short weeks, Jo had found perfect solace in Evan’s company, sneaking every night to meet him at the local pool. In the cool of the water and the warmth of Evan’s arms around her, Jo had tasted something close to happiness.
Cruel circumstances tore them apart, and four years later, the sweet memory of their time together is dissolving under the punishing reality of Jo’s life now. Evan seems like a fading dream…until he reappears at the moment she needs him most. Guided by Evan’s strange intuition, they flee her small Louisiana town, on the run from the police, and Jo begins to suspect there is something more to his sudden return than he admits.
Over twelve days across America’s heartland, deep secrets come to light, buried pasts are unearthed, and the line between dreams and reality is blurred as Evan and Jo fight to hold on to their soul-deep love, and discover that there is more than one way to save a life.
No black clothes or emo make up or stringy hair. Not this guy. Evan Salinger was, to put it mildly, fucking gorgeous.
I kept staring. For all his hard angles and masculine ruggedness, there was some intangible softness about him too. I don’t know how or why I could possibly know this at first glance, but to me Evan looked like he’d spill the deepest secrets of his heart to the first person to show him any kindness.
We exchanged looks, a commiseration; the girl with a scar and the boy with the freaky rep, and something shifted between us. An unspoken understanding that drew me closer to him without having moved an inch.
“Wait here.” I ran back up to my room to grab his blue-and-black plaid flannel shirt, still in my possession. Back on the porch, I handed it over.
“My shirt. I forgot you had it.”
“It’s ‘my’ shirt. You need to go home tonight and sleep in it. I made the mistake of washing it and now it doesn’t smell like you anymore.”
He turned the shirt over and over in his hand, laughing and shaking his head.
“And I want it back first thing in the morning. You read me?”
His fingers ran through my hair and caressed my cheek. “Let’s do something really fucking crazy and trust each other.”
Evan. Where are you? Come back to me. I can’t breathe…
“Do you ever…” I heard her swallow hard. “Do you think about us? What we had?”
My chest ached at the longing in her voice. The fearful tentative reaching across the space between us.
“Every minute,” I said. “I think about us every minute of my life. All I do is think about us.”
“I’ll always come back to you.”
Evan Salinger had infiltrated my brain. I was trying to keep him out and he kept seeping in.
I let go. The shields guarding my heart lowered. Evan wasn’t taking, he was giving. His kiss gave me those impossible things I’d desperately wanted all my life: tenderness, consideration, reverence. I took everything in his kiss, turned it around and gave it back to him. Willingly. Never once wondering what it would cost me later. No price to be paid, only this moment with this boy. The beauty of timing him and his sweet kiss. I let go.The first half of the story, Jo and Evan’s young love- it moved me. I couldn’t stop reading, gobbling up every word. There were some tough to read scenes (especially with Evan’s family) but I adored Jo and Evan together and their relationship. My hopes were so high. Then they crashed and burned as something horrific happened that tore them apart. Four years pass before they see each other again. Four long years.
“Do you ever…” I heard her swallow hard. “Do you think about us? What we had?”
My chest ached at the longing in her voice. The fearful tentative reaching across the space between us.
“Every minute,” I said. “I think about us every minute of my life. All I do is think about us.”
WOW.
A heart wrenching and beautiful love story, with a unique setting and fascinating characters, I stayed up all night because I couldn't put it down!
Evan and Jo's love story was powerful, passionate and so eloquently written I gobbled up every word, I felt every emotion, and I got swept up into their world so completely that they owned my heart.
God. This book was perfection!
Josephine was a girl who went through a lot in her short life, having lost both of her parents, she was under her uncle Gerry's guardianship, he was a trucker therefore they had to move around a lot. When they arrived to their latest stop, she enrolls in the town high school, where she hears whispers about Evan.
The town freak.
The mental case.
The loner.
Being a misfit herself she doesn't give the rumors much credit. I don't want to give you any more details because believe me you'll enjoy the book much more if you go in blind!
Evan was such an honest, deeply emotional, misunderstood guy, I just wanted to hug him and tell him that everything will be okay. He was adopted by a family who already had kids of their own, and his "brothers" abused him. He just wanted out.
"Evan looked like he'd spill the deepest secrets of his heart to the first person that shows him any kindness. He's sort of beautiful."
When Jo and Evan met butterflies took flight in my stomach and I felt every look they shared, every touch, every word, I didn't want it to end. They were such good people in terrible situations with horrible pasts and I just wanted them to get their happily ever after.
The writing was so beautiful, so eloquent, and captivating. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time till the very last page, it was an exhilarating ride and a beautiful story.
“They say all who wander are not lost. But some of us are. We’re really fucking lost, wandering until our feet bleed, and it feels like we’ll never find our way home again.”
I don't want to share any more details because you guys will enjoy it so much more if you go in blind. Just know that it's a beautiful unique story with a beautiful happy ending.
One of my top favorites of 2016 February's pick 5+++Stars. Highly recommended.

“Some people laugh at a situation and say, “Story of my life.” I didn’t have a story. Just a question.
And then what?”
“I was trapped between who I was and who they wanted me to be and it was crushing the life out of me so I could hardly breathe.”
“We exchanged looks, a commiseration; the girl with a scar and the boy with the freaky rep, and something shifted between us. An unspoken understanding that drew me closer to him without having moved an inch.”
“Do you ever…” I heard her swallow hard. “Do you think about us? What we had?”

Evan looked like he’d spill the deepest secrets of his heart to the first person to show him any kindness – Jo

“I’m fucking serious, Jo. Why are you here? Why are you hanging out with the town freak at a waterpark in the middle of the night? Tell me the truth, please. Please.” – Evan

Robin Hill is def divorcing me once she sees this review.
Look, I love Emma Scott and I think she's ridiculously gifted at crafting the most heartbreaking stories. And even though my default rating for all ES books is 5 stars, I am- to my dismay and shock, unable to do same with this book. And it's all bc of the second half, the plot twist to be specific.
As if Evan's- unexplained- jailbreak wasn't enough, that Jo just had to go back to Lee's flat (why???!!) when in actual fact any sane person would have hightailed it like the roadrunner, smacks of the dreaded deus ex machina.
Additionally, the main characters conformed to every other YA/NA book characters in booklandia. That is: unloved, damaged, tortured, orphans, outcasts.....etcetera.
Occasionally the story was riveting (particularly the paranormal aspect) sadly these were never fully developed or resolved. At a point, I was hoping Evan was from a different planet or a ghost or just anything that would support his paranormal abilities. The reality, however, was underwhelming.

a bit... where two troubled teens find comfort in each other. But then, of course, this book takes a completely different turn.

I drifted between awake and asleep.
Floating.
Not on air, but on water.
“Something like that. It helps to hold my breath for a long time if I’m kind of…detached from my body. If I were sitting under there, counting the seconds, I don’t think I’d get very far.” He waved his hands, making little ripples in the water.
”Is this really how you want to spend your Wednesday night?” he asked. He shook his head, silently answering his own question. “You should go. If someone sees you here, you’ll never hear the end of it.”
“Like I give a shit what people think of me.” Evan looked me up and down, his gaze coming to rest on my long hair that covered my scar like a shield.

In that twilight place just before sleep, I imagined dream walkers in the skies above me, catching my words in their nets and walking them to Evan to guide him home.

“They say all who wander are not lost. But some of us are. We’re really fucking lost, wandering until our feet bleed, and it feels like we’ll never find our way home again.”
I wished with everything I had, I could take away her pain—all of it, from the scar up to that moment—and keep it so she’d never have to suffer it again.
I dreamed it but can only remember little pieces. It doesn’t come back to me until we’re in the moment.
