UPDATE Sept 14, 2023: Just realized there is a fourth book in this series and have just checked it out at the library, I am going to read it despite my review on Book 3……….I do not know what to say about this trilogy, I just finishing the last book early this morning. The character development is good, however the storyline of them is very interesting. Remembering this was late 1800's in Scotland/England. So many lies and family members covering up the bad deeds of this psychopath was a lot to bear but then I just kept reading, even though not my genre. Now what....the ending was so predictable. Guess not as good as I thought. maybe only 3.5 stars on this third book.

"We were going to announce this at dinner," said Robert, wrapping an arm around Jane. "But I can't keep it in any longer. I'm very happy to announce that Jane is with child."
"Oh, that's wonderful," beamed Amy. "Congratulations," she said, kissing Jane's cheek before hugging her son.
"Yes, really wonderful news," said Henry, shaking his stepson's hand.
"With child?" repeated a confused Lydia. "What does that mean?"
"It means I'm going to have a baby," replied Jane.
Lydia clapped excitedly while her brothers still looked puzzled.
"For dinner?" said John.
"What a disturbing notion," commented Andrew.
"I have a baby growing inside my tummy," said Jane, pressing a hand to her abdomen.
"How did it get there?"
"There's a question for your parents," smiled Andrew, sipping his Scotch.
"Your brother put it there," Henry told John.
"Robert or Stephen?" he replied.
"Robert," he quickly replied while Andrew chuckled.
"How did he put it there?"
Henry's mouth opened and closed as he became increasingly flustered, Andrew grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"I'll tell you when you're older," was his reply.
"Why?"
"Because it's grown up knowledge."
"The curious minds of the young," smiled Andrew. "How about another magic trick, children?"

The third book in the Alardyce series has readers swept back to Victorian times as a darkness sweeps over Edinburgh once more, picking up soon after the end of the second thrilling installment "His Cursed Heir" . While it can be read as a standalone, this is one series that can only be fully appreciated in all its ruthless glory from the very beginning. I highly recommend going back to "The Missing Girls of Alardyce House" first, which I found to be the most brutal of the three. It lays the foundations of the the second and third books, carrying a dark and atmospheric chill throughout. Think Jack the Ripper but on a greater scale...and what if Jack the Ripper had a son to take up his legacy?
Edinburgh 1897: Life has not always been kind to Amy Alardyce. But now she has found love with Henry, remarried and they have three beautiful children together. But Amy eldest child continues to worry her. Born from a liaison with an Alardyce footman when she was just just a teenager herself, Robert revealed his proclivities to be just like his father's before him thus prompting Amy and Henry to attempt to take matters into their own hands to prevent him from marrying his childhood sweetheart Jane. Alas, they were too late and the couple were wed.
Now a few short months later, Robert is proving to be a devoted husband, his love for Jane never wavering and as clear as night and day. And Jane continues to be blissfully oblivious to her husband's true nature, encompassed as she is in the throes of newlywed happiness. But how long can he keep his secret from her? He vows that she will never know...but how can one claim to know what the future holds?
When news reaches Henry and Amy that young maids have been attacked in alleyways late at night, they know at once that Robert is responsible and are dismayed. They had hoped that marriage might be the making of Robert but sadly too much of his father's blood runs through his veins. Henry confronts Robert who of course denies any knowledge of the attacks. But Henry has a proposition for his stepson...if he loves Jane and his mother enough.
And then Jane falls pregnant. Robert is excited, certainly, but he is also fearful. What if their child is a son? And he too shares his father's proclivities? What then?
Meanwhile, the Alardyces have been shunned by society for the past decade due to the shame brought on the family name by Henry's younger brother Edward and Amy's dalliance with their footman, of which Robert is the product. But with Robert and Jane's marriage, suddenly they have become accepted within society again, propelling Robert forward as master of his own destiny at the tender age of seventeen years.
Suddenly there are murders in the Old Town and young women are being attacked. And this time, they do not go unnoticed. An Inspector Murphy is on the case and he will stop at nothing to uncover the truth behind these crimes. Is Robert a guilty man and has he gone too far this time? Is there any coming back from this? And will Amy protect her son till the end?
HIS FATAL LEGACY is something of a sad tale as Amy's story almost comes full circle and Matthew's legacy lives on in Robert. It also raises the question of nature vs nurture. I'm a firm believer in nurture but sometimes people really do bear the sins of their fathers before them through no fault of their own. This series belies the nature edict as is seen over the course of each book, though none have been as graphic or as brutal as that first one. But each are just as equally chilling. Though I did feel this one lacked some of what the previous two had, it was still dark and disturbing as we watched like voyeurs relishing our delight as Amy and Henry attempt to take back some control before it's too late. Robert is just as pathological and yet in this book we begin to see a different side to him and we find ourselves sympathising with him.
This book also differs in that it has a small police procedural side to it, though it is very minimal with the focus mainly on the Alardyces rather than the investigation. I mean, to us as the reader, there is no mystery. We know who did what...we just don't know whether the police will get there with what they've got. Or how long it will take them.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series and part of me doesn't want it to end. Although this had initially been a trilogy, a fourth book - "Evil at Alardyce House" - is to be published in July. And I can't wait!!
Overall, HIS FATAL LEGACY is a deliciously dark tale following on from the previous two books in the series that is atmospheric and chilling throughout. The entire series would make a brilliant TV series. But it's dark and it's chilling...who would be brave enough to undertake it?

I realize one of the problems starting a series with the third book is not always the best place, but author Heather Atkinson gave enough background early on to get me a good sense of what was happening, and who the players were. My issue is that I just never really cared about the characters.

I really had problems to reach the end of this book! However, I wanted to write an honest review so I did finish it. I found the characters too thinly defined. I couldn't feel any empathy for their feelings and acceptance towards Robert, a murderer. Too flatly described, their relationship felt hardly credible. Overall too much telling as opposed to showing. To me, the plot also fell flat and I was not gripped by any tension.

His Fatal Legacy by Heather Atkinson is an historical novel that gripped me from the start. It is the third book in the Alardyce House series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The tale is set in Edinburgh in the late nineteenth century. It has elements of the Gothic tradition with large houses, dark nights, deserted alleyways and sinister characters. The tone is chilling as an air of menace appears.
Family is important. A mother’s love is fiercely protective, needing to uphold appearances no matter the cost. Dreadful secrets and suspicions arise but lips are sealed.
We witness nature versus nurture – are monsters made by their genes or a product of their environment? A character wrestles with the darkness within as he tries to focus on the light.
We all make choices. There is always the choice to do the right thing.
Policing is teetering on the modern era. Mistakes made in London during the Ripper investigation mean that the Scottish police are determined not to repeat those mistakes. A dedicated policeman uses his brain and powers of intuition to work to uncover the truth. He is relentless in his pursuit of justice.
Heather Atkinson has produced an exciting novel that is more than a little creepy. I read it mainly in one sitting as I could not put it down! It was a compulsive, if rather scary read! It would make a marvelous movie – but I am not sure if I am brave enough to watch it!

I have read each of the books in this Alardyce series of gothic novels and each one gets progressively darker as we delve further into the twisted mind of Robert Alardyce who we have seen grow into a very troubled young man. This third book in the series follows on directly from where book two left off and we meet again with seventeen year old Robert as he is newly established in his own household with his lovely wife. However, all is not well in Robert's life and he must fight the demons which threaten to engulf him, and place in danger all those who care about him.
The author has captured the very essence of the tragic gothic novel and has given us a desperately troubled individual whose antics on the page are deeply compelling and more than a little shocking and yet there are also moments of empathy and compassion especially when we see Robert interacting with his young siblings. The squalor of Victorian life is captured in some detail as is the social mobility of the upper classes who seem to flit around on quite a superficial level and Robert straddles both of these lives with a troubled uneasiness.
His Fatal Legacy can be enjoyed as a standalone as the author gives enough detail to pick up the back story, however, if you enjoy dark and dangerous Victorian gothic then my advice would be to start at the beginning and get to know Robert Alardyce for yourself and ponder over the disturbing dilemma of nature over nurture which this author brings to life so convincingly. I'm not sure if there is to be any further stories in this series however, the ending of His Fatal Legacy certainly lends itself to a continuation which would make for interesting reading.

This is the third in the Alardyce series and, while it can easily be read as a stand-alone, I would highly recommend reading the earlier books in order to get a true feel for the characters, their behaviours and their motives.
As in the previous instalment, the reader is transported back into Victorian Edinburgh in an easy to follow style of writing, despite the darkness of some of the themes.
The historical period is portrayed exceptionally well, with the references to class expectations and conventions and the huge divide between rich and poor a key component in elements of the storyline.
An intriguing aspect of this novel is the portrayal of Robert, one of the central characters. This is a gripping read; an historical novel with just the right amount of gothic horror in the mix. Definitely recommended!

As in the previous instalment, the reader is transported back into Victorian Edinburgh in an easy to follow style of writing, despite the darkness of some of the themes.
The historical period is portrayed exceptionally well, with the references to class expectations and conventions and the huge divide between rich and poor a key component in elements of the storyline.
An intriguing aspect of this novel is the portrayal of Robert, one of the central characters. His Fatal Legacy is the third book in the Alardyce series set in the late Victorian era in Scotland. I have previously read and reviewed The first two books: The Missing Girls of Alardyce House and The Cursed Heir. It is not necessary to have read the earlier books as the opening chapters provide a summary of the key events and how this has impacted on the main characters.
Robert is a dangerous man but loves his wife. His propensity to cause pain and suffering in others is barely contained and this is further heightened when he feels slighted in society. He uses his cunning to wreak revenge on those who he believes have affronted him but this does not end the physical urges to maim and kill.
The creepy atmosphere and sense of danger are well maintained through the whole book. There is a lot of darkness in the events depicted but also real emotion as Robert tries to fight his demons and make good choices. The book contains episodes of violence and murder which are quite graphically described. There are also references to witches and spirits, adding a superstitious and folklore layer to the plot.
The nature versus nurture debate is key as he blames his parents yet has been shown nothing but love. Set in 1896 Edinburgh, His Fatal Legacy is dark and atmospheric with Gothic elements which in the blurb sounds like perfection. Amy Alardyce is remarried to a man she loves and she is smitten with her children. All but one, her eldest son Robert who in his teens has already lived many lifetimes of worldly experiences, treats most women abysmally and flaunts his wealth. Though outwardly happy, Amy's son's dark secrets niggle away at her so she is rarely truly at peace. A dark generational thread runs through a few males in the family and when women in Edinburgh are stalked and attacked some wonder whether Robert is the culprit. Robert's stepfather seeks help for his wicked stepson as lives may be in danger, including those close to home. Robert's new sixteen-year-old wife Jane is sweet, kind and naive and in the throes of newlywed happiness, adored by her attentive husband. She is blissfully oblivious to his past and he is the greatest of actors.

This book has a strong Gothic feel. Set in 1896 Edinburgh, Robert has come of age, married his childhood sweetheart, and set up his own household but his father's dark legacy of abuse and murder seems to haunt him. Women are being brutally attacked in Edinburgh, his mother and step-father fear he is responsible. And a detective is determined to get his man.
Nature vs nurture, what wins out? How far do you go to protect the son you love even though you know he is capable of doing evil? How do you protect you other younger children who only see the charming side of their older brother? Love of family vs. what you owe to society? All these questions and themes run through this book.
All of these things build upon the previous two books which trace the evil of the previous generation and how it is visited to the present one. I did not read those so I know there is a lot of character development I have missed and that did hamper my ability to connect with Robert and some of the other characters. In fact, I found Robert despicable and the whole thing somewhat depressing. There is action, a great Gothic atmosphere, and an early police procedural in this book but it just didn't appeal to me.

This is the third book in the Alardyce Series and can be read as a standalone, although I would recommend reading the first two to get the gist and the the history of the family. How we got to the point that Amy has a grown son suspected of being the worst kind of criminal.
The story actually brings some core questions to the table, the kind that apply to any family and any period in time. Does the love of a mother override any crime or heinous action their child may commit? Is it possible to draw a line in the sand when it comes to emotions and the bond between mother and child, especially when a grown child could potentially be a bad influence or a danger to their siblings. Is the possibility of becoming outcasts in society a factor that makes the decision easier or harder.
The most poignant storyline, that is woven through into this book from the prior books in the series, is the whether evil is nature vs nurture, ergo passed along like a short leg, wonky eye or more a case of learning by seeing. Can Amy make the right choices for herself, her family, and even Robert?

The third book in the Alardyce series, and I was keen to read this instalment. Heather Atkinson is an author who, no matter what genre she writes, its always a book that you can't resist reading.I will say now, read the first two books, then this one. Without reading in order, you won't get the full depth of the story and characters.
Heather Atkinson has such skill in making the reader feel like they are part of the story. Her characters are excellently created, so they feel like real people with flaws as well.

Oh my gosh, I had to hold on to my kindle. The war between Robert and his parents was a ripping good throw down. Amy was absolutely amazing. I thought that her character was cleverly written for this story. Having Henry by her side to fight the evil that shadows their family is a relief. Poor Jane what the heck. She is so naïve, but what do you expect, she’s seventeen. She’s a teenager. Thank God that there is Amy, Henry and the housing staff to stand guard. The plot is gripping and mind blowing. All characters stories are very relatable to the topic. There is so much realism to the characters and the situations that they find themselves in. The plot works well with the time period and location. The dialogue among the characters was so amazing. It was almost like watching tv as I read through each line. The description and the details of how characters reacted and what they did was phenomenal. This book just has me up in a flutter. This story has terrific, amazing and wonderful writing. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

2.75/5 stars! Set in the late 1800s, this is a dark thriller where a serial killer may be on the loose and he may be living in your very own home. The main character has to confront the fact that her son may be a killer and decide whether to turn him in or hide his crimes. The premise was interesting but I didn't really connect with the story. The characters felt 2-dimensional which made it hard to root for anyone. Not a bad book for gothic readers, but not on par with what I'm looking for.

The 3rd book in The Alardyce Trilogy this is a dark Victorian gothic thriller. Whilst it could be read as a stand-alone I think you would lose something so I recommend reading in order. Set mainly in Edinburgh in 1896 this is a good historical drama with a touch of police procedural. Well written with a fairly straightforward plot this was an easy read.
Briefly, Amy Alardyce’s son Robert has married Jane and has left Alardyce House. However, with his coming of age he has inherited the dark nature of his father Matthew. Working women are being brutally attacked and Amy and her husband Henry are concerned that Robert is the culprit. Inspector Murphy, a very successful police officer is given the case and he is determined to get his man.
This was an good family drama. A story about family values, the strength of a mothers love, a mental battle of good v. evil and a resolute detective. Fast paced, plenty of action and an enjoyable read.

You need to read these in order to understand and follow the books. I absolutely loved the gruesome and twisted storyline of the previous two books and I couldn't wait to read this one.
It's hard to review without leaving spoilers but this was very much the same style and feel of the previous books. Dark, gritty, and deeply disturbing, and I loved it.

It is a long time that I have read a series that I could not wait to get back to. This author is one of my favourites and the Aldardyce books on the lives of this family are intriguing and a wonderful woven of plots and beautifully written. Cant wait until the next one arrives.

This is the third instalment about the Alardyce family. This time round the story concentrates on Amy’s son Robert and is just as fast paced and dark as the previous two in this series. Robert has married Jane and they are extremely happy, but has he also inherited the evil desires of his father Matthew? This had me totally gripped from page one and I couldn’t put it down! Very descriptive, and with some fabulous characters, this covers a bit of everything from romance,family and social standings, to murder and evilness. Even though the background story is well covered I would highly recommend reading the other books to really get the full benefit of this amazing story. Thank you to Boldwood Books, Netgalley and of course Heather Atkinson for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.

I read this book without reading the first two in the series before it and really enjoyed it. The author has a wonderful way with words, it is gripping and memorable.
I would love to go back and read the first two in the series before carrying on.

His Fatal Legacy by Heather Atkinson is the third book in the Alardyce Series. It starts up pretty much where the second book left off. Amy Alardyce has remarried to Henry, theirs is a wonderful marriage and Henry has been able to help Amy move past all the tragedy she has had. Amy's eldest, Robert is a problem for her as she sees that he has a dark side to him, like, his father Matthew.
Young maids have been accosted late at night and Amy and Henry feel that Robert is to blame. Robert denies this but they feel otherwise. In spite of Amy and Henry's efforts to keep Robert from marrying his childhood sweetheart, Robert and Amy get married and soon are blessed with a baby, Emily.
After the birth of his daughter, Robert's proclivities stop for a bit, but his darker side soon takes over. He does not like anyone in society, and won't go to balls or parties with his wife. She tries to convince him that he should do this, so they can get back into society after being ostracized because of who his father was, a lowly footman. He still refuses any invitations to his wife's consternation.
Soon there are murders, and suspicion is still on Robert but he is able to have someone else look guilty, Robert is all about revenge against those who he thinks has wronged him. Inspector Murphy is on the case and he is bound and determined to prove that Robert is at the heart of the crimes. When something happens that ruins everything for him, he disappears.
The story is set in Edinburgh in the late nineteenth century, has a very gothic, chilling atmosphere, and a thoroughly enjoyable read, I read The Missing Girls of Alardyce House, but missed the second book His Cursed Heir. I did find that that was ok, I really did not miss much of the story, it is good to read the in order but I think that they can also be standalone. Heather Atkinson is very good at bringing the past stories into the current book. This is a historical fiction at it's best. I look forward to reading the next in the series Evil at Alardyce House Book #4.
