It seems that every day we hear another news story of a church that is attacked, a missionary who is held hostage, or a Christian who has been murdered for their faith. Although we live in a world of disbelief and mistrust, we as Christians cannot afford to be skeptics about persecution.
These stories of horrendous persecution and suffering should shake us to our very being. This is not make-believe. This is not a book of fiction. This is not sensationalism created for an upcoming movie! These are actual, very graphic, and unbelievable accounts of persecution. This is reality!
First things first, Vernon Brewer most certainly does his job in telling the western culture about all the persecution of Christians around the world. And might I add, he did so in such an easy to read way. The first 50 pages flew by like nothing with each page being more engaging than the last. Some of the chapters were absolutely unbelievable and really makes me think about why I am complaining about my first world issues like being shy and not talking to people. Specifically the chapters about China and Iraq stood out at me the most and some of those stories I most certainly be thinking about for a while. The only reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 stars was because the last few chapters ended up feeling much slower writing wise and it was kind of hard to stay attention at the end. Other than that, this book was incredible and has really made me think about my entire life and how I should be more grateful for the freedom I have as a Christian in America. Vernon Brewer, thank you for writing this you are an amazing speaker and an incredible writer, the things that Christ has done through you has been incredible and it will inspire me for years to come.
Vernon Brewer is the founder and president of World Help, a Christian organization that meets the spiritual and physical needs of hurting people around the world. He felt called to write down stories of persecuted Christians around the world that he has personally met. Brewer came to our church because he was the Dean of Students and Campus Pastor while our church’s pastor was at Liberty University. After speaking to our congregation, he gave out these books for free to anyone who wanted one, he has never sold a single copy. The book is eye opening because mainstream media just does not report very much about persecuted Christians so it is very easy for Americans to forget or not even realize this is happening in many countries around the world.
