Lieutenant-Colonel Jack Windrush is sent as an observer on a British-led Egyptian expedition to rescue the garrison of two Egyptian posts in Sudan. When the local warriors intervene, the British send an army.
Jack and his regiment, the Royal Malverns, are heavily involved. Things become more complicated when Jack is ordered to hold a village deep in the desert as an escape route for General Gordon and the beleaguered garrison of Khartoum.
The twelfth book in Malcolm Archibald's 'Jack Windrush' series of historical military novels, Baptism of the Sword is an action-packed historical adventure set in the period when Britain stretched her imperial muscle, despite the misgivings of some politicians and soldiers. It shows the bravery of the ordinary fighting men on both sides, as well as the futility of war.
My primary interest is historical, either fiction or non fiction, but I can enjoy most anything from Jane Austin to Kipling to J K Rowling. I have been very quiet on this site, but I think I might be a bit more active now. I also enjoy the stimulation of meeting people and finding out about them.
I've read all of Malcolm Archibald's Windrush series but he has really surpassed himself with Baptism of the Sword. Once again Jack Windrush, now Lieutenant Colonel in charge of his beloved Royal Malvern is thrown into the thick of the action when he and his men are sent to support the Egyptian forces in Sudan as they battle the forces of the Mahdi, who seeks to install his rule over the region, expelling the Egyptians from what he considers to be a sacred land. No spoilers from me, but I can say that the author describes the battle scenes with a brutal reality, bringing the sights and sounds of 19th century to life in a way that few authors can. Every character is brilliantly described and his research has been superb as he manages to merge his fictional tale into actual events from the time. I admit to feeling quite breathless after reading the book and its stirring finale. I wholeheartedly recommend Baptism of the Sword to lovers of historical fiction ands have no hesitation in awarding it 5 big stars.
A truly entertaining series these. Malcolm Archibald is a gifted story teller. The desert, the Sudan, Gordon at at Khartoum, holding a door open for escape. And Jack Windrush using all his talents.
