An accident in the Kenyan bush claims the life of Sir David Cooper, the Director of International Trade and Industry for the British Government - a man with impeccable credentials and an impressive family history.
Twenty years later at an auction on a remote farm in South Africa, a young woman discovers two boxes. One, a richly engraved Chinese puzzle box concealing things the late owner had clearly wanted to remain hidden; the other, an antique silver box with an intriguing crest.
Jack Taylor, a journalist from London now living in South Africa, and his partner, ex-detective Piet Joubert once more join forces as they try to untangle the mysterious and tragic past of the two boxes and the people involved.
Set against the breathtaking beauty of Kenya and South Africa, this is an irresistible page-turner, laden with unpredictable possibilities. It takes the reader down a trail of deception, secrets and tragedy, culminating in a single impossible truth and an unthinkable ending, which even veteran journalist Jack Taylor had not seen coming.
I am a Samantha Ford fan and have read most of her books. Unfortunately this book is more of the same. The main characters Jack Taylor, Piet Joubert and the Hazyview environment are well described in previous books and the current novel is a rehash of this. The story line starts well but runs out of steam making the conclusion very predictable. The under lying romantic themes which are a big attraction of Sanantha’s books also dies three quarters of the way through the book leaving the reader to query why it was there in the first place. Sorry Samantha we need new characters, a new environment and a stronger story line.
I love Samantha Ford’s books . Having grown up in Africa , I am drawn to stories set in Kenya and South Africa. Her ability to make her reader feel part of that unique landscape is breathtaking . This book twists and turns and is a complete page turner . If you like short chapters and a fast moving plot, this like all her books will hit the spot .
Greatly developed characters and twisting plot! Right from the get-go, the reader is caught up in the plot of the story! Difficult to put down, I read the whole book in a day!
Another fantastic story of Africa by Samantha Ford
This may be my new favorite by Samatha Ford, though, I say that about all of them. Rarely does an author keep me returning for more, she is one of the few exceptions.
This is the sixth book I read of this author and I think it was the best. It is a pageturner from the very beginning, and the mystery only grws to a unexpected twist and anding. I recommend this book.
Having the good fortune to spend 3 weeks in Kenya, Ms. Ford's stories evoke wonderful memories. Her descriptions of "the bush" are spot-on!. Readers can't go wrong with her books.
I have read several of Fords novels. She weaves mystery, romance, and the beauty of South Africa into her books. Her characters are richly developed and believable.
Wow what a great story that makes it hard to put down. Fascinating story with captivating characters in the beautiful South Africa. Absolutely loved this story by one of my favourite authors.
Another winner from Samantha Ford. Intriguing, twisting tale. Pulls at the heart strings in many places. She is very adept at knowing when to do this. Clever.
Found these books fabulous. Well written and researched. Great author! Can we have some more from Samantha? Love the settings and storylines. Feel like I have been there!
