เครื่องหมายและสัญลักษณ์ในคริสตศิลป์

หนังสือเล่มนี้เล่าถึงที่มาและความหมายของเครื่องหมายและสัญลักษณ์ ซึ่งศิลปินนิยมใช้ในคริสตศิลป์ เพื่อบอกให้รู้ว่าบุคคลในรูปคือใคร หรือเพื่อสื่อความหมายในเชิงสัญลักษณ์ นอกจากนี้ยังบรรยายเรื่องราวในพระคัมภีร์และชีวประวัติของนักบุญที่พบเสมอในงานศิลปะ หนังสือเล่มนี้จึงไม่เพียงแต่มีประโยชน์สำหรับผู้สนใจศึกษาทางด้านศาสนาเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งต่อผู้ที่ศึกษาศิลปะ ตลอดจนวรรณคดีตะวันตกและประวัติศาสตร์ของชนชาติโบราณในตะวันออกกลาง อีกทั้งยังช่วยให้ผู้อ่านเข้าใจวัฒนธรรมและความคิดของชาวตะวันตกได้ดีขึ้น
ในฉบับพิมพ์ครั้งที่ 4 นี้ ผู้แปลได้แก้ไขศัพท์และคำแปลบางแห่งให้สอดคล้องกับที่คณะกรรมการคาทอลิกเพื่อพระคัมภีร์และราชบัณฑิตยสถานบัญญัติไว้ โดยปรับใช้ตามความเหมาะสมของเนื้อความ รวมทั้งได้ชำระรายชื่อพระธรรมบทในพระคัมภีร์ทั้งสองภาคและจัดทำเชิงอรรถอธิบายศัพท์ศาสนาคริสต์เพิ่มเติม เชิงอรรถประวัติย่อของนักบุญที่ผู้เขียนกล่าวถึงแต่มิได้ให้รายละเอียด และเชิงอรรถประวัติย่อของจักรพรรดิโรมันที่เกี่ยวข้อง นอกจากนี้ยังได้แปลความเรียงของรัช เอช. เครสส์ และบทนำของผู้เขียนซึ่งไม่ใช่แปลไว้ในฉบับพิมพ์ครั้งก่อนๆ ทำให้ฉบับพิมพ์ครั้งล่าสุดนี้ถูกต้องและสมบูรณ์กว่าทุกครั้งที่ผ่านมา

นอกจากเทพกรีก โรมันแล้ว ก็มีเรื่องราวในพระคัมภีร์นี่แหละที่เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้ศิลปินชาวยุโรปรังสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะ โดยเฉพาะในโบสถ์และศาสนสถานต่างๆ  ทำให้ศาสนากับศิลปะเกี่ยวพันกันลึกซึ้งจนแยกไม่ออก โดยในเล่มนี้เป็นจิตรกรรม 98% อีก 2% เป็นงานประติมากรรม

หลังจากที่ได้อ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้แล้ว เมื่อเรามองภาพวาดจะไม่มีเพียงแค่ความสวยงามอีกต่อไป แต่จะแฝงถึงเรื่องราว และความหมายลึกซึ้งอีกมากมายที่ศิลปินแฝงเอาไว้ในภาพเพียงภาพเดียว

ผู้แปลคอยอัพเดทความถูกต้องของข้อมูล มีภาพสีให้ในต้นเล่ม แต่ภาพเล็กไปหน่อย เวอร์ชั่นหน้าน่าจะมี qr code ให้สแกนไปดูภาพแบบชัดๆ เพราะเราเสียเวลาไปกับการ search ภาพมาถ่างดูให้ชัดๆ มาก แต่ก็นะ อ่านแล้วก็อดหามาดูรายละเอียดภาพสวยๆ ไม่ได้

2.5 Maybe this is my fault but I was coming at this book as though this was going to be art history, but it is just written as a christian work. Which is fine but leads to a lot of references to what this means from a Christian standpoint and not from a historical or accurate standpoint. His writing is clear and concise but there are definitely some inaccuracies which could either be because of the point of view it was written or just the fact that we have learned a lot in the last 70 years since this was written.
