‘Could there be a world of interest and adventure beyond the Midlands? A world of confidence, sex and excitement? A better life – a better me?’ These are the questions Gerard Philey grapples with over New Year, 1995. Sitting in his rented Black Country room, reflecting on his thankless teaching job and miserable love life, he courageously decides to abandon his humdrum existence and embark on a quest for Euro-fulfilment, fun and fitness on the Continent.
After a shaky start in Brussels, events manoeuvre him to Amsterdam where chance encounters shift his world well and truly into fifth gear. He samples the trials and tribulations of new relationships, alongside managing a sex shop in the city’s Red Light Area – on top of the challenges of fat-free living and international travel!
Through his bittersweet diary, we see how Gerard steers a laugh-out-loud course through farcical episodes and fanciful characters...and how entanglements from past and present draw him unwittingly into a criminal underworld where events ultimately take their toll.

Halfway through, and I can't put it down. The writing is brilliant. And everything is so well observed. The characters feel like fully-formed, three dimensional human beings. I love that it's set in 1995. Pre-mobile phones (yes, I know they were around in the 80s, but only for city slickers) and the UK still in the EU. The cosmopolitan feel of this book also broadens the appeal. And there's lots of lovely phrases and descriptions. Calling Cologne Cathedral a 'noun-and-a-half'. Brilliant. Anyway, back to it. Page 100, or Wednesday 24th June, if you prefer to measure it that way.
This is a brilliant, brilliant book. I loved everything about it. Particularly the people in it, who, by the end, you come to care about and like. I only hope the author is working on a sequel. I for one would definitely read it. Encore, author! Encore!
In all honesty I really wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about Gerard Philey’s Euro-Diary. A diary entry style that had me thinking if I was actually going to enjoy it. Well that’ll teach me to be all judgy about a book before I’ve read it! I laughed so much I didn’t want it to finish. I loved following Gerard’s journey from his very boring, uneventful life to finding himself in the much more promiscuous lifestyle of running a sex shop in Amsterdam! This could not be more removed from his old life if he tried and I adored every single entry.
This book is written with a passion that just brings the brilliant characters to life. some of the situations that Gerard finds himself in are truly outrageous but equally hilarious, it really is one of those books that you think, “Ok I’ll give it a go” and then end up thinking “I am telling everyone about this book” Everyone needs a good laugh every now and then and Gerard and his escapades will indulge you with laughs in spades. Loved It!
Thank you @Rararesources and @Brendan James for letting me part of this tour and reviewing this book. I really like the front cover is colourful and the pictures are very interesting which make you want to read the book to find out what the front cover all about. Quest for a life defiantly tells you what the brothel all about. Quest of life is written in diary form and Gerard tells you about how his life has changed in year since leaving his day to day job as a teacher and packing up and living in Amsterdam and meeting his friend Frank and working in sex shop. Quest for a life made me laugh in places and it was really interesting to read about Gerald ups and downs. Enjoyable read and I read it in a day . It was easy to get into and feel like you where there with Gerald.
There are those books when offered a copy that I jump at and then there are those that I have to think twice about and with its tag of 'humour' {books labelled thus alas are all too often not}, its diary entries {not my favourite format it has to be said} and its sex shop setting {I hold my hands up, I'm a bit of a prude} this fell into the latter category which just goes to prove one should 'never say never' ... at least not always. What turned out to be a humorous, at times actually LOL, read after all, its diary entries reminiscent of The Diaries Of Adrian Mole {a series of books my late-teenage self loved} but for adults, its sex shop setting not anything my prudish self couldn't cope with; indeed some of the most funniest moments took place here AND it gave a great insight into the psyche of your typical reserved/sexually repressed Brit compared to that of the, well, more liberated Dutch.
Heart warming, honest, compelling, outrageous, its diary format making it both easy {at least in theory anyway} and yet all too difficult to put the book down {the number of times I thought just one more entry only for that one more entry to become several}, cringe worthy, far from subtle, surprising; an altogether compelling read of a 'fish out of water', of a Brit abroad exposed to, well, the seedier side of life.
Its mid nineteen-nineties setting filling me with nostalgia though I suspect some of the references will be lost on younger readers and even more so on those who aren't British ... as indeed might some of the humour.
What however really made the book for me was its wonderful characters. Oh My Goodness! I adored both Gerard and his German flatmate Frank; taking them into my heart in a way that I hadn't anticipated.
Likable, realistic, easy to relate to, Gerard is an amazing character, the situations he finds himself in, for the main part, genuinely funny though there were some in which I felt genuine empathy for him. His and Frank's relationship, well, lets just say that the way both men's lives, especially Gerard's, are enriched is so incredibly sweet.
One of those books I could shout about from the rooftops {as my late nana would say} ... made all the better by the fact I enjoyed it in a way I hadn't thought I would. Will there be a sequel? Hmm! I'm truly hoping so.

I haven't read a full diary entry style book since reading Adrian Mole when I was about 13 (which I loved) and this book definitely had some similar vibes!
Gerard is bored! Fed up after his girlfriend dumps him, working day in, day out in a dead end teaching job and living in the spare room of his friend's house (and his pregnant wife!) - in the West Midlands - He decides enough is enough and sets out on an adventure - being free - and hops on a train to Europe.
We follow his adventures as he settles in Amsterdam, meets some great new friends, finds a job (or two), a place to live, meets some ladies and gets himself in one big mess!
I really loved the format - being like a real diary with daily entries - it feels like we're following Gerard real-time. This format enhanced the contrast between those usual, same old 'nothing much happens' days and those moments of joy, change and total chaos.
I think fairly early on we get an inkling of what's going to transpire over the course of the book, but it was great to go along on the journey and see how things developed and also how the characters developed too.
The end result was no surprise - but it was great to find there were a few little twists in there....just to keep us on our toes.
This book was full of hilarity amongst the day to day events and I loved Gerard's dry sense of humour, the cultural differences and language barriers that occurred.
Not at all what I was expecting - but definitely an enjoyable read.
Gerard Philey’s Euro-Diary: Quest For A Life by Brendan James is a light-hearted novel set out in the form of a diary from 1996. It is reminiscent of The Diary Of Adrian Mole but for adults. The reader follows Gerard Philey from his bedsit in Walsall across Europe – mainly to Amsterdam but also to Bruges, Prague and more. It is a cosmopolitan read that opens Gerard Philey’s eyes to a totally different way of life. The English are a reserved nation especially when contrasted with the uninhibited Dutch. We see Gerard Philey as he adapts to situations but he remains a faithful friend with a kind heart. There are many light-hearted, humorous moments that had me laughing out loud. This is definitely a fun read that will brighten any day. As I studied in Walsall in the 1980’s, there were parts of the novel that really resonated with me – I spent many hours waiting at the bus stop on the Birmingham Road for the number 51 to Birmingham! Gerard Philey is a likable, realistic character who is easy to empathise with. His trusting nature means that he sometimes gets caught up in situations beyond his control. I thoroughly enjoyed Gerard Philey’s Euro-Diary. It was such a fun read. I received a free copy from Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own. A word of caution: there are some themes and locations that some readers may not like.
Review:Gérard Philey's Euro-Diary:Quest for a Life by Brendan James Genre: comedy novel Pages: 193 Rating: 5/5
Review: I absolutely loved this book, and looked forward to any chance I got to read it. Beautiful storytelling, funny and charming, I can't believe it's the author's first novel. It is written with wit, self depracation and empathy. The book cover's bright colours and cartoon like images perfectly give a flavour of the comedy to come and would tempt me to pick it from a shelf. The author writes as the main character, Gérard, and is immediately likeable. Written as a daily diary rather than chapters, we are quickly introduced to Gerard's life and come to empathise with him as he plans to escape his humdrum life. We follow his adventures over the period of a year, getting to know his friends and family. I want to know what happens next in Gerard's life - there's another book in this. Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. I will be recommending it to friends.
I had a lovely time with this book, it’s very funny and screams of ‘Adrian Mole’, so if you're a fan of this sort of thing then this should be right up your street!
The story is written in a diary format which makes it easy to pick up, read an entry and then get on with whatever you're doing - that’s if you can actually put the book down in the first place!
We follow Gerald as he begins a new life full of adventure and excitement!
The book is structured well, the characters are intriguing and the story is engaging. I laughed out loud a few times! Overall this is a good, short comical read which will have you smiling in no time!

Now I'm going to be honest here if I wasn't on this tour this isn't a book I'd choose for myself. BUT I am so glad I got to read this short read. Loved the diary format of the story so easy reading note it's called a diary duhh. Loved the main character Gerard who's just had enough of the same things everyday and being a teacher so off he goes on his adventure. Now parts had me giggling away. This story really has it all. Gay best friend. Dodgy dealings. Romance. Even a sex shop. A story that made me smile with a very likeable main character. This will stay with me a long time, pretty hard to forget. Enjoyed every page and diary entry. A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend. Glad to be on the tour for this one otherwise I would have missed this gem.
What a fun and lighthearted book to start the new year on. I loved the diary layout of the book, which was set over the course of a year. It made it quick to read, and I speed through it. I loved seeing all the antics and situations Gerard managed to get himself into, a number of times I found myself saying, "Oh no," or "not again." I thought Gerard's friend Frank was brilliant, and he had me laughing so much.
I would definitely recommend this. It's a really fun and light hearted read
Quirky, enjoyable, engaging, addictive. This diary-syle romp through crime, sex, and romance is all these things and a very easy read, with a satisfying climax (if you'll forgive the pun). I think it's fair to say that you won't find another book like it either, so if you fancy a change from your usual preferred genre, I recommend giving this a try. Well worth adding to your tbr pile.
what a great book, Gerad decides ro go travelling and ends up in amsterdam the adverntures he has and the folks he meets make this a laugh out loud comdey for me well written i woould love to know if there is a follow up??
A first comedy novel by Brendan James and such an entertaining read. The blurb describes it perfectly. Covering one year we follow Gerard on his various adventures and all the unbelievable characters he meets. Light-hearted and very enjoyable.
Written in the format of a diary, Gerard’s adventures as he sets out to find a new life that isn’t dull or boring, are quite humorous at times. It’s an easy read and very entertaining.
I read this book in less than 24 hours. Set in the mid 90’s, it was funny, serious, and just a fabulous read.
Gerard is a school teacher in Wolverhampton and decided that the next year he’s going to travel Europe and have some fun instead of the tedium of teacher life. He starts off in Brussels and then travels to Amsterdam where he kind of puts down some roots and ends up learning Dutch and becoming the manager of a sex shop! Life couldn’t be more different.
He meets some brilliant characters along the way, Frank the German, Joop the Dutch businessman who gives him work and shelter, Rachel his co-worker in the sex shop and Ben the thug.
I absolutely loved this, and will definitely look for more by this author. If you need a laugh between serious reads, grab this - it won’t disappoint.
There's much to like about this book, and as a fellow Midlander and Europhile, this totally appealed to me. It's humorous, sad, eye-openingly honest, far from subtle and generally a fun read. Gerard's encounters with the likes of Frank, Joop and Sandra are heart-warming and puzzling in equal measures. Getting to know them is an adventure, it's a challenge, but oh so worth it. These people, with all their idiosyncrasies, show him a side to European culture that differs from the glitz and glamour of Paris and Rome. In Brussels and Amsterdam, Gerard lives a life that is colourful in an altogether different way. The British tendency to "polite silence" is shot down by vocal outbursts, blunt statements and a laissez-faire attitude. This is all too visible when his friends from England venture across the Channel on a visit. It is cringingly uncomfortable to see their reaction to this "permissive" society, it's all quite pompous of them to look down on Gerard's lifestyle compared to his life back in Walsall. Stepping out of his comfort zone makes him reflect on his past life and question whether this time away from his old life could ever be a permanent thing. He has his doubts, wonders if he's just drifting through life, but it is the relationships he forms that convince him how much richer is life is. I can't wait to see how how things develop for him and hope a sequel is not too far away.
What started out as a slow burn had me absolutely hooked by the end! Gerard's adventures go from drug laundering to dildos, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! The diary entry style of writing makes it a very easy read as well as the humour throughout. Would definitely recommend!

I absolutely loved this book, I lived in Amsterdam for 2 years, it brought back many happy memories. Phil lived life to the full, I was surprised he got away unscathed from his 'adventures'. His book is hilarious, really well written and unputdownable. Hope he writes another book
This is story is written in the form of diary entries by Gerard Philey who has moved to Amsterdam. I would not normally read this style of book; however, the good reviews made me give it a try and I’m glad I did. Somehow it just works well, maybe because of the type of work Gerard lands in and his quirky sense of humour. A very easy read which I would recommend.
This is a book that engages from the start. Each fascinating setting, each indelible and endearing character, each imaginative predicament, and each hilarious aside chronicled in Gerard's daffy diary had me howling with laughter and eager for what came next.
Author Brendan James whisked me away on a European vacation I didn't want to end. This book is an easy-breezy read on one level and a finely crafted commentary on the innocence of youth on the other. Perhaps because the novel takes place in 1995, when I was still figuring out who I was/wanted to be, I saw so much of myself in Gerard Philey- in his gullibility, as well as in his incisive and witty take on culture, love, friendship, and self-transformation.
Brendan James is a remarkable writer. I hope he shares more of his storytelling talents with us.
My Thoughts: I’m not sure what I expected from this, I think I thought it was more of a memoir, so I was very pleasantly surprised when I realised it was a work of fiction.
Written in diary entries this was a like a blast from the past and took me right back to my teenage years of reading Adrian Mole books!
Gerard finds himself in some right predicaments, I found myself laughing, cringing and shaking my head at him multiple times.
A thoroughly enjoyable read that almost gave me the travelling bug.
I loved Gerard!! I haven’t read a lot of travel writing, and definitely not a fictionalised travel writing adventure… but I really enjoyed Gerard’s diary. At times he’s so blissfully unaware of what’s going on, and as the reader you want to pat him on the head as you can see what’s coming! 😆 A funny and engaging first person account, of his travels through Europe, making new friends and trying out new jobs (and meeting some women along the way!) I read the majority of this book in one sitting, because I was so invested and needed to know how everything would turn out. It rushes towards an ending during the last 10% of the book, and you are left with some questions/to make up your own mind. If you like a book focused on a diary, you’ll love this. There is still a lot of details/Gerard paints a good picture of his surroundings, and you can see yourself having a walk round Amsterdam with him 🙂
Thankyou @hyggebooktours for including me in the tour!
