Do you have to give God two-weeks’ notice when you quit the ministry?
After a lifetime of being her father's right-hand girl, Ezra gets a small taste of freedom during her friend's honeymoon visit to the Suamalie islands and decides enough is enough. All she needs is to find a replacement secretary, teacher, project manager, accountant... et cetera.
In fact, what he needs is a wife.
Scott Keil intended to serve the Lord on St. Alyn Island for life. He just never intended to do it without his wife. So, when his daughter begins balking at being saddled with a ministry she never signed up for, he knows he needs to find a replacement for her. And well, she's right. A wife who loves organization and serving the Lord would be the perfect solution.
But only one woman interests him and loves his ministry nearly as much as he does. Natalie Dershem—the event planner at St. Alyn's newest resort. Why did she have to be nearly as young as his daughter... and so intriguing?

Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.
Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25
Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.
They’re for you.
When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.
Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.
And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”
Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached. What does that even mean? It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.
But I do.
And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!
And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.
I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.
It was fun to get to know Ezra a little better after meeting her during the Independence Islands series of books. This was a fun intro to the new series about this set of islands. I thought the book was well written and easy to read.
One of the best things about my hobby of reading is finding authors that always encourage me and relay messages that help in my struggles and give me joy when I’m feeling down. This author is gifted in all the things I just mentioned and more. In this story it was easy to connect to the characters because they became people I cared about. I loved the setting and how it focused on learning to trust yourself and others. This new series promises to be filled with beautiful scenery and a cast of characters that become family to readers.
Scott is very dedicated to his ministry and has placed a big burden on his daughter. He depends on her a little too much and I had to wonder when the obvious would happen. Well Ezra, his daughter has had enough of being her dad’s right hand and decides to do something about it. I did like their relationship and how Scott has instilled faith into Ezra. You can tell by the story that they rely on God and pray when they need guidance.
Ezra is smart, hard working and needs a break from her father. Helping him in the ministry has been nice but she needs a life of her own now. Her dad has been alone for a long time and Ezra after careful prayer has decided to help her dad find a wife. Get ready for some fun moments when daughter tells father that it is time to find a helpmate . Their conversations are emotional at times and other times they are stubborn and forceful. This makes for a good look at a daughter and father relationship as it is guided by God.I was impressed with the maturity in Ezra when she speaks honestly to her dad.
Now let’s focus on Natalie. She is a breath of fresh air as she takes on the task of filling in for Ezra while she takes a much needed break from everything. You can tell that Ezra has a little trouble with control but it soon diminishes as she sees how capable Natalie is. There is a spark of attraction between Scott and Natalie but we will have to see how that plays out. Of course I’m not not going to tell you if they get together. What fun would that be? I will say that I really liked the difference in the age between Scott and Natalie. It has never been an issue for me. If two people love each other, age should not be an issue. Did everyone think this romance was a great idea? Of course not and wait till you read who has the problem and who confronts them about it.
The book is a great introduction to a new series and I am hooked already. The author has laid the foundation for what is going to be another adventure with characters that you root for, faith that helps you grow stronger and messages that we all need to keep our eyes on Him.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
For quite a while, my husband and I have been discussing the color hibiscus, so when I saw Under the Hibiscus by one of my favorite authors, Chautona Havig I knew I had to read it. With entertaining characters and a storyline to match, I loved this book.
Serving as the introductory “novella” for a new series by Celebrate Lit Publishing, this book sets the stage for what appears to be an amazing new series set on the Suamalie Islands. Natalie Dershem, the event planner at St. Alyn Island’s newest resort, fills those requirements, but she is the same age as his daughter. But when his daughter decides enough is enough about serving in a ministry she never signed up for after the death of her mother, Scott has to do something.
Scott Kiel serves as pastor on St.Alyn Island, but he needs to find someone. To take his daughter’s place in the ministry, he needs to find someone who loves the Lord, the ministry, and the responsibilities as much as him. Sometimes you have to step out in faith and let God take control of how things develop. I felt Ms. Havig did an excellent job allowing the relationship between Natalie and Scott to develop. She loves the ministry, and he finds himself interested in her. But the age difference needs to be considered.
I loved how Chautona Havig developed this story. So if you are looking for a great book, check out this book for yourself. I am sure you will enjoy it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own
Under the Hibiscus is a fun romance by one of my favorite authors with some fun plot twists along the way. Settle in for an amazing read. I have yet to find a book by Chautona Havig that I do not adore. Her characters are always complex and blow your mind with how much you become intertwined with them.
In this book, we meet some characters that we’ve already fallen in love with.
Ezra is one such character. We’ve met her before in the Islands book series. Ezra Nehemiah, but she’s a girl. How fun! Such a unique name. Anyway, we get to go to her home in this book and see her family. She lives with her dad and helps him in his ministry but she wants out. She’s done. It’s time for a change and to do what she wants to do with her life.
Her father needs someone to replace her but really he needs a wife. What happens when he pursues someone barely older than Ezra?
So, I didn’t know they call having a large age gap in a marriage a May/December romance. I don’t have a problem with gaps though. You see, my husband is 10 years older than me.
You’re going to love this new book!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
What I think you should know: Under the Hibiscus, a Contemporary Christian Romance by Chautona Havig is the introductory Novella in the Suamalie Islands Series. In this book we follow up with Ezra Keil who was introduced in Havig’s books in the Independence Island series. While you can read this book as a standalone, the Independence Islands are a great series to check out for more background on Ezra and her visitors in the book.
What you might need to know: Ezra's mother died during childbirth and she was raised alone by her father as a Missionary kid. In this book we learn that she didn’t always feel like she came as a top priority for her father.
What I think about this book: I can honestly say that I don’t remember the last time that I read a contemporary Christan age gap romance, that made this such a delightful read. I was already intrigued by Ezra from the previous book, but it was very interesting to read about her father Scott. Scott is devoted to his ministry to the exclusion of all else. Natalie moves to the Islands for an event planning job, but instead falls in love with the ministry. This was a great read, I can’t wait to see what happens in this series!
I received a complimentary copy for this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Under the Hibiscus is a Christian Christmas Contemporary Romance that is written by Chautona Havig. is an author that can write such unique stories. She writes amazing characters, unique storylines, and so many different situations. I have read several of her books this year and have always loved every single one of them. This is a kcik off to a new series that is being released by Celebrate Lit.
Ezra was introduced in one of the books in the Independence Island series, but if you missed out, no worries. The author does a great job in filling in any missing information. It was good to see her in a story again. She has been her father's right hand person for so long - and when she gets a taste of freedom she wants to jump on it. Scott, who serves in a full time ministry role, knows that he needs to find a wife. His daughter, is not happy that she has had to assist with his ministry.
The romance between Ezra and Scott is cute. Scott has instilled a lot into Ezra and they make a good team. While this is a quick read at 170 ish pages, the book moves at a comfortable pace. I loved getting a preview to the new Suamalie Island series.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
I was eager to read this introductory story to the Suamalie Island series as I have enjoyed the Independence Island series. I was pleasantly surprised to find a familiar character or 2 in this story. If you’ve read the Independence Island series you’ll recognize Mallory, the gal with the mobile box store. Mallory’s friend Ezra is one of the main characters in Under the HIbiscus. Surprisingly, it is Ezra’s father, who has been widowed for a very long time, who is the focus of this story. The book contains a May-December romance. The couple looks at all the pros and cons of a romance between people of different generations. The book could be an encouragement to those considering a May-December romance (or their children). The book also has good advice for parents and children who are in ministry together - advice on setting boundaries and making the ministry really is what all are called to. There is so much to love about the book. I enjoyed the story and hope to hear more about Scott, Natalie, and Ezra in future books in the Suamalie Island series. Under the Hibiscus is written for the adult market but has appeal for high school aged girls. I recommend that librarians read the book and decide if it is appropriate for their audience.
A delightful story with an unexpected twist, I enjoyed this kickoff novel to a new Island series. Scott Keil, a missionary pastor, has dedicated his life to serving the church and the island community, but he never expected to do so as a widower. His hardworking daughter, Ezra, has picked up the slack around the church, but she’s burdened with his calling rather than fulfilling her own. Can she help him understand her situation, and can she find her own place to serve using her giftings . . . The winning characters seem well-developed and jump from the page filled with personality. The plot isn’t complicated, but it does tug at the heartstrings. Perhaps following God’s direction could lead to answers to their dilemma as well as to love. You never know what might happen in a Chautona Havig book, but it’s sure to keep you engaged and offer a gratifying conclusion. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Under the Hibiscus is part of the multi author series, Suamalie Islands. This book is Chautona Havig’s contribution to the series and a great introduction for me to see what to expect for the other books to come. I enjoyed taking this journey to the beautiful setting of the Suamalie Islands and meeting Ezra, Scott, and Natalie. It was a sweet story of faith and romance. I really liked it.
I am giving Under the Hibiscus four and a half stars. I believe readers who enjoy reading clean and quick romance will not to miss out on this one. I would love to read the full length books from the Suamalie Islands series to see what else happens on these beautiful islands.
I received a digital copy of Under the Hibiscus from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Chautona Havig never fails to create a story that inspires and convicts the reader as much as it entertains--and "Under the Hibiscus" is no exception. A unique Christian age-gap romance with all the island and holiday feels, "Under the Hibiscus" features an island missionary, his daughter, and the new secretary...
While it's the start of the new multi-author Suamalie Islands series, we are visited by friends from the Independence Islands, as well--Mallory Barrows and her new husband. (And in fact, fans will remember previous references to Mallory's friend Ezra, one of the main characters in this book.)
"Under the Hibiscus" can be read any time of year, but I love the way Chautona gifts us a romance each Thanksgiving in celebration of her own wedding anniversary with her husband Kevin.
Nice introduction to the Suamalie Islands series. Fans of the Independence Islands series will catch a glimpse of a couple of beloved characters that make a cameo appearance in Under the Hibiscus. I initially thought this was going to be Ezra's story, but while she is challenged to follow a new path, readers are introduced to Natalie and Scott. I love the fact that the two have servants hearts and are totally committed to God's work. Sweet story filled with faith and romance. Looking forward to getting more of Ezra's story in future installments in this new series.
I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher through CelebrateLit. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The idea of putting God first and family second can be hard. Sometimes we put God and the individual ministries we’re led to be part of on the same level. Ezra sees the effects of this. Her father does not. The truths they have to face as they’re dealing with these issues are compounded by Scott being a single father for all Ezra’s life. These issues and the problems they can cause are portrayed very realistically. Even down to the issue of dating someone much younger. But even with all of these things happening, the story retains a fun feel. It’s not a heavy read at all.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and give it five stars. I received an ARC of this book through Celebrate Lit. The reviews and opinions are my own and freely given.
Once again this author writes a wonderful story about love, friendship, and God. Though there is a big age difference between Scott and Natalie, they fall in love. Scott learns to see that his life needs balance and Natalie brings that to him. It is a sweet relationship that develops. Ezra is thrilled that her father has found a life partner who brings love and joy to him. But it is a big adjustment for her. I love the way Ms. Havig always weaves spiritual thoughts into her stories, never sounding preachy but making the point. I never hesitate to recommend her books and this one is definitely added to my list of favorites.
I requested this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Yep, another good one from this author. The characters are so unique and I just love her writing style. It’s a quick read that was quite satisfying. A good, clean romance.
There are some writers that you just know their books are going to bring a smile to your face and this one does. I love the way the characters search for God’s will. It was a reminder of what we should all do. Just a really great read that you should pick up.
4/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
I picked up this book because I thought it was going to be about Ezra Nehemiah - the female named by her parents after biblical books. Instead, the romance was about Ezra's father. But I enjoyed it just as much. Parts did make me cringe because they were tied about too closely to reality. How easily we can all overcommit and follow paths simply because they are there rather than because God has called us to go that direction. I didn't realize that I was starting a whole new series, but I am sure that I will read the next one as well because I do really like Ezra as a character even though she is a bit driven.
I loved this book! The characters were well-developed and believable, and the story was fun! What especially struck me, though, were the truths planted throughout the book. As someone who grew up in ministry, I really related to the way the missionary and his daughter did EVERYTHING in their church. Some of the church activities they did weren’t even necessary, but to the characters, they felt like they were. There were some wonderful reminders that loving and obeying God and taking care of our families are more important than doing “ministry things.” I’m also excited to see more of these characters in future books!
I have waited a long time for this first installment of the Suamalie Islands series. I am not disappointed at the introduction to the South Pacific with vibrant scenery and interesting characters.
Ezra has her debut in the Independence Islands Series. She shares the islands lore with her father, friends, and newcomers. How difficult it must be to start a business from a boat? Will she have the gumption to make her plan and dream work?
Welcome to the fictional Suamalie Islands. I hope you stay a while throughout the series. I surely will.
This was a fun read and left me wanting to read more! This book features characters from the other books from the Island Series. I believe this is my favorite of the series written by Chautona Havig. This has a new business and a matchmaker. It is a different type of love story. There are characters from the other books in the series. I am eagerly awaiting the next book. This is a story that shows sometimes a person just needs to say no to something that God isn’t wanting for them. I received a complimentary copy from The author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are mine!
What do you do when you are a missionary and your wife dies and you so busy building the mission field and the church and raising your daughter yourself? You take her for granted running things for you until suddenly she’s 30 and she quits. Enter the lovely Natalie (many years your junior) and you can’t see that you are falling in love. But God and your daughter team up an tell you to let go and love again. God definitely is in this one and I appreciated it.
I certainly enjoyed this book! I loved all of Ms. Havig’s books in the Independence Islands series, and am delighted that Mallory still appears in this new series. I really liked the concepts of finding balance in life, and finding the place God has for each of us. I loved reading a book in which the romance didn’t start until over a third of the way through. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, and you can be sure I will be reading it!
I received a review copy of this book from the author, and these are my honest thoughts about it.
Another interesting read from Havig. I love the island themes. This book opens a new series, so there's that plus. The book still works as a stand alone, and features a clean romance. I found the characters to be pretty good in this one. Missionary life is a strong faith theme in this book as well as overcoming loss.
Thanks to Celebrate Lit for a digital copy of this book. This review is my own and a positive review is not required.
Steve’s wife says, “I love Havig’s stories. This one didn’t disappoint. I really appreciate the different viewpoint. Telling the story from his daughter’s point of view is brilliant.”
This one is one of the most overlooked books I know. It's funny. It's faith filled. I laughed. I cried. I cheered. It's a warm fuzzy blanket. Perfect July read. You can call it Christmas in July. You can even call it a beach read. I loved it. Strong faith message that doesn't overpower.
I hadn't read this story, but I've been listening to it on youtube, read by the lovely Christa Delsorbo. I finished listening to it today and enjoyed it so much! I'm looking forward to more of Ezra's story!
Chautona has hit another home run with a sweet romance, coupled with a relatable story hashing out some of the unspoken challenges of ministry. Thanks!
This short story about a Christmas wedding was the preacher and his girlfriend getting married . usually the preacher performs the service. Sweet and to the point! Lol
Chautona Havig’s books always have interesting characters, intriguing storylines, and a strong theme of faith. In this book, she challenges us to be open to God’s leading in our lives, even if it appears that He’s directing us on a path that’s completely different than we imagined it would be.
Each of the three main characters in this book—-Ezra, Scott, and Natalie—are easy to like and I soon found myself wanting them to each find their happily-ever-after. The romance between Scott and Natalie is a May/December romance, as Natalie is much younger than Scott. Both are devoted to the church’s ministry on St. Alyn Island. They share the same heart for God’s work in the islands—but is that foundation enough for a marriage? I liked the way the author shows this couple searching for God’s best in their lives and being willing to follow His plan completely. I also liked the way that Ezra showed her love and respect for her dad and his ministry, even when she didn’t always agree with him. This book is truly a clean and sweet Christian romance.
This novella-length story is the beginning of a new series set in the Suamalie Islands. I would have loved for this book to have been a little bit longer so that we could have seen more as Scott and Natalie’s relationship developed, but if the rest of the series is as interesting as this first book, there’s some great reading ahead.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Having enjoyed several books in the Independence Islands series, I was interested to see what this series is like. This is such a fun story! I found Ezra quite relatable, and loved watching her exhaustion and overwhelm become the impetus she needed to make necessary changes. The romance in the story was also pretty fun—I loved the matchmaking element!—and the setting was intriguing. This is a fairly fluffy story, but it does still occasionally have deeper nuggets. A fun, lighthearted, fast read—not a particular standout, but enjoyable.
A really sweet, Christian romance that got better with each chapter! It is an age-gap love story (which I usually do not lot) but the characters and lessons woven within their journeys of leaning into God’s calling were lovely. The major themes of ministry looks different, the importance of listening and moving in response to God’s directives, and building relationships on faith are well developed. Some wording was a little confusing in places and it took me about 30% in to become truly invested in the characters, but it was a lighthearted-just-the-sweet-book-I-needed. Perfect for those that love slow-burn, didn’t-expect-it romances!
Also, the hibiscus kisses?? IYKYK #loveit Will definitely read more by this author in the future.
