James Fulton decided to go to the office on his day off. Now he cannot leave due to the blizzard that came out of nowhere. To quell his boredom, he decides to keep a journal of all his activities that pass the time. He didn't expect what would happen next.
James Fulton's story starts off harmlessly enough. He has come to the office just to do a small job and he knows that it is snowing a little outside.
However, things do not go as planned, as the snow shows no signs of stopping.
He keeps a journal to record his time as the snow relentlessly continues outside.
The cold, the slight hunger, the running out of supplies, the 'other' homeless guy in the building(?) were all told from the point of view of Fulton through his journals. His despair, his descent to his hallucinations (or were they real?) brings out a trapped feeling of the main character very well.
Particularly enjoyed reading about the part where the office supplies were destroyed. James claimed he was having fun and yes that was when the story brought out the real despair in the situation.
Apart from a few typos, the story reads wonderfully well. It’s written in diary form, helping the reader with the book’s timeline, and I couldn’t turn those pages quick enough. I read Snowbound in one sitting (only 31 pages). I also read it in winter, so I really felt James’ dilemma in the cold weather.
The author takes us on a journey spiraling down to hell where the protagonist tries his best to survive but slowly loses his mind and starts acting irrationally. And the way the last pages are written…Bravo!
This is the second book I’ve read from this author—looking forward to the third!
When James went to his four-story office building to do some work on a Sunday, he didn't think the snowstorm of the millennium would happen. Eventually the snow reaches the fourth floor and James finds himself raiding the cafeteria/vending machines/desks to find food to survive.
As the snow piled up, so did the dread. Told through James' journal entries, we follow along as his supplies dwindle and his mental health suffers.
It took about half an hour to read, well worth the time.
Meet James Fulton, a project manager for Northstarr Industrial Communications in Illinois. James decided to come into work on a Sunday to finish an urgent report, only it's snowing heavily outside so he's decided to wait for the storm to pass.
What happens when the storm doesn't pass? It just gets worse and the snow gets deeper and deeper. What happens then the following day it's still snowing and James is still trapped in the building, alone? How long will he be trapped in there? Does anyone even know he's in there?
In this book you will find a very speculative account of what could happen if you were trapped in an office, alone, with no means of communication. Biga has written a very imaginative story of one man's determination to survive. He raids people's desk cupboards and office cafeterias in search of food. The office has a shower and even a gymnasium, so there are plenty of ways to keep active. However, how will James survive the more pressing challenges of loneliness and boredom?
This is written entirely in first person, like a diary, James's diary of his account as he's Snowbound. I loved it and I'm sure you will too.
A man goes in to finish up some work at the office on the weekend during a snow storm in Illinois, and is trapped alone in the building by the snowfall, which is constant and piling up fast. This journal is told in the first person and starts off lighthearted as he laments not ordering Chinese a few hours ago and choking down a co-worker’s tofu dish that was left in the fridge. As the first week passes he migrates up to the fourth floor where it’s warmer and a window breaks on the first floor from the pressure of the snow drifts. He consumes the food from each floor’s kitchen, the vending machines, and the dregs from the cafeteria. After 2 weeks he fears the roof caving in and begins to clear it by pushing some snow inside to melt. There’s no power, no wifi, no entertainment, and after a month his mental state deteriorates. HE begins to drop things from the top of the stairs to watch them break.Soon he discovers another man lurking around the building. The tension in this book is amazing. The storm is a month and a half long. What an epic story!
James Fulton unwittingly gets trapped in his place of work, alone, after he is snowed in. With no internet access and no phone service he is cut off from the world. Never less he is not too worried at first and thinks the snow storm will be over and he’ll be out in a matter of days. However the days turn into weeks and it gets a bit concerning when the snow level gets increasingly higher until the four storey building he’s in is completely covered and James realises this is a snow storm of apocalyptic proportions. After a couple of months food and drink are running low and with the cold creeping in and his trusty laptop about to give out will he survive? Well you will have to read it to find out. This is a great study of the human psyche and how we would react if we were alone at the end of the world. The story was atmospheric and kept the suspense throughout the short read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
This book is like a one man theatre performance. The sole character, being keen to impress, has gone to his office on a snowy weekend to deal with a project. Unfortunately, he is trapped in the office by a heavy snowstorm. He is there for more than 40 days during which he is very brave at first then very wise in the middle, conserving food and water but by the end he is in a state of despair . This story is extremely well written, I found nothing in it that l considered implausible. If you want a quick read one evening this book will satisfy your needs.
Fulton is stranded at work with no way out as the snow just continues to fall. When he decides to journal, we get to know his every thought and growing concern over the building losing power, running out of food and being alone, but is he really? A short but compelling tale, Snowbound gave me the eerie feeling of what it’s like to be trapped and alone. I read this at night which made it a bit more intense and creepy. Good job by the writer who set the tone beautifully.
Written in journal entry form, this novel follows a workaholic who accidentally gets trapped in a building during a blizzard. With survival at risk, the MC reflects on his life and tries to entertain himself. This tale that ranges from hopeless to hopeful and back and forth again is well crafted. The author's ability to put us in the mind of the MC is masterful. Highly recommended.
Literally read it all in one sitting, not wanting to put it down. Tension rising with each new entry in this guy's journal. I could feel his anxiety, optimism, and wistfulness for all the small things in life that he took for granted. That last twist, and how quickly it all deteriorated was simply fantastic! I couldn't have expected to get so much out of such a short piece of writing. I was very impressed! Congratulations!
Snowbound is a very short but engaging read. A snowstorm traps a man inside his workplace and things happen afterward. It’s a dystopian event as the snow keeps falling, that benefits from not being explained as it keeps us guessing and we follow the individual through a diary he keeps. A few edits are needed but it does not detract from making this short story compelling.
This book came at an unusual time for me, watching news of Buffalo snowstorms while remembering my own experience in 9-foot drifts there. The main character is stuck in his office building by a huge storm, and tends to his own survival, at the same time going bonkers from isolation. I know the feeling.
A great look into the human psyche as the main character gets trapped alone with his thoughts due to heavy snowfall and logs it, diary style. Biga does a fantastic job of describing the slow decline of a person locked away as they lose hope of rescue bit by bit.
Wow! A Short, but Nerve-wracking Read - Excellent!
RW Biga proves to be a highly talented and imaginative writer in this short, but engaging and ultimately heartbreaking read. It reminded me of Matt Damon’s character’s experience in “The Martian”. Empaths beware: RW Biga’s writing will get to you!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys short stories, diary-style writing, and dystopian settings. The author's storytelling is engaging, and the diary format allows for a deep dive into James' psyche as he struggles to survive in a snowstorm that seems almost otherworldly.
This is second book I have read by this author and she has the skill to punch it hard (whee it hurts!). James is stuck in a blizzard and as the day goes by he is finding ways to survive. You are wi5 Jim. All the way as he writes his journal and you keep hoping… he makes it.
Short and to the point. Sounds like one of those What would you do If.....probably do just what he did, what else could you do. Pretty nice little short story of a !an trapped in a 4 story building with snow piled up to the 4th story and his need to survive.
I don’t like reading much but since this was a short book I thought sure I’ll give it a try. Glad I did. it’s a book of journal entries of a man trapped in an office building. I can picture all of his adventures because I spent many years in a cubicle office building.
The book is very well written and captures the mental state of the main character. It is the perfect winter read! I really liked the style of a diary entry, detailed to the minute. It really makes you think of how you would experience this if it happened to you.
The author has given this book a realistic perspective of what people can go through when they are stuck indoors due to the winter season especially with excess snow. It's written in a journal entry style with dates and times.
A short quick read in the style of diary entries of a man stuck in his office block during an unprecedented snow storm. A tale of suspense and survival as this man, searches for food, drink and warmth to keep him alive. A really great suspenseful short read.
A very intriguing read presenting the character James, who gets stuck in a blizzard. The book is written in the form of a journal and gives insights into the character's thoughts and activities. A perfect book for those looking for quick, gripping read.
I always like it when writers play with writing styles. It makes things interesting. This was entertaining, although not my flavor. I didn't dislike it though. As a work, it was neat. Good job.
A most interesting short story diary of a man trapped by a massive snowstorm. I liked how the character's predicament progressed but would have liked to see more of his life story be revealed. The ending left me hanging.
RW Biga never lets the reader down. A great short story that keeps us captivated. I love the journal idea which kept the action to the point. This is a quick read but also an enjoyable one. Kudos RW!
Excellent dark short story. Stuck and snowbound in the office for over 24 hours alone on a Sunday, He begins to journal the experience. Days pass, and desperation kicks in while 500 inches of snow falls outside. Fever, infection, insanity ensue......
I’ve never read a book like this. It’s journal entries from a guy stuck in a snow storm. After the first few pages I didn’t think I’d like it but I got caught up in his story. At times he made me laugh. Wish there was more to it. I hope James is ok.
This is a well written short story with suspense. The story is interesting it makes one think ‘What would you do?’ I found myself hoping for the best outcome but fearing it wouldn’t be. I recommend this book.
