This is one of the most boring books I've ever read and I do not recommend it to anyone at all. The only reason I've read this book is because I had an essay on it and honestly, I completely blew it. The whole story is about people, who weren't brave enough to stand up for themselves and when somebody finally did they exhiled him. It's complete rubbish as far as I'm concerned.

It is said, that certain books are for a certain point in life. And the saying certainly holds true for this book. The fact of the matter is that this work has a horrible reputation. Mostly because it's being forced down highschool students throats, usually with a heaping spoon of badly processed literal theory. The fact that it provides the majority of the favourite quotes of all defeatist political commentators doesn't do it a great service either.

But if you manage to get over the bias, and actually sit down and read it, when you actually want to read it. It's a pretty good short read. The characters are well written, the story is attractive (if you're politically inclined) and the language, somewhat unique, makes for an interesting read. If you don't like political history, the book might not be for you, but at 75 pages of script, it's not a unmanageable investment of time either way. Basically, try to get over your Cankar bias and give it a go, you might like it.

A perfect satirical drama portraying the Slovene society of the eartly 20th century. Ivan Cankar, the greatest Slovene writer, introduces the very core of even today much current Slovene person. He emphasizes the flaws of slovene society: comformism, ignorance, oportunism and a forever lasting stigma of the Slovene nation as an agricultural society: farmworkers (hlapci). In the story, he introduces teacher Jerman, a member of the liberar political party, who struggles to educate his coworkers and bring them closer to the liberal idea of the political and economic freedom and much as possible independence from Austria-Hungary. He manages to intertwine motives from his personal and public life, creating a hostile environment for such an educated man in a sea full of ingnorance. In the end, it's his own mother and the guilt he feels towards her death that mark the end of him. Hlapci is a book every Slovenian should read with understanding, because it holds the key to understanding every situation we are put in today. Yes people, the crisis, corruption, the ever lasting comformism and unability to fight the whip that politics swing towards us for the past 1000 years are all consequences of the brilliantly described core of our nation. Please don't say this book is boring, i know it's not meant for teenagers but try to read it as an adult and understand the meaning behind it.

Po srednji šoli sem prvič ponovno vzela v roke dramsko delo "Hlapci", mojega najljubšega slovenskega pisatelja Ivana Cankarja. Ni mi ljub le zaradi svojih del, ampak tudi zaradi svojih liberalnih načel in neomajnosti, kar je s Hlapci lepo ponazoril. Kakor ti veli in ukaže gospodar. In mi smo vnuki svojih dedov."

I read this over the summer. Not exactly light reading and understandable that a high school student would find it boring since they do not have the life experience to truly understand it. The book discusses situations that are still occuring today, 100 year after it was written. Although it If we take a look at the political climate around the world now, the world hasn't changed much.

Jerman ne more razumeti svoje družbe. Politična situacija je spremenila njegovo prepričanje. Ljudje niso bili prepričani v svoje pravice, bili so konformisti.

Honestly (and surprisingly), well said.

Mestoma mojstrsko pisanje, zmožno nastavljati ogledalo vsem hinavcem, konformistom ...
