Trapped far from home as the world falls apart, one father will save his family - no matter what it takes.
In the frozen wasteland north of Alaska, a series of mega-rigs operated by joint USA/Russian teams go up in flames, killing thousands of workers and destroying a trillion dollars' worth of equipment.
After barely surviving the initial firestorm, mechanic Zach Christensen is trapped in the arctic, five thousand miles from his wife and children back home in Connecticut, struggling just to find enough fresh air to breathe, let alone the strength to find his way back home.
While governments try to hide the scope of the disaster, the fissures caused by the rigs continue to spread billions of tons of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere, spreading fires and toxins that are consuming not just the arctic, but the entire planet....
Welcome to my little space out on the web. I'm Kenny Soward, and I'm an author, musician, and once IT guy. I write books in many sub-genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy, including post-apocalyptic, military science fiction, epic fantasy, and horror. I'm influenced by authors such as Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, Anne Rice, J.K. Rowling, Mark Lawrence, Dan Simmons, Robin Hobb, Robert McCammon, Larry Correia, and Mike Kraus.
I love all kinds of movies and shows from Battle Star Galactica (reboot) to the Walking Dead. There's nothing I won't try.
I grew up in Kentucky in a small suburb just south of Cincinnati, Ohio, listening to hard rock and playing outdoors. In those quiet 1970's streets, I jumped bikes, played Nerf football, and came away with many scars.
My grandfather and many of my uncles and cousins served in the United States Military, and my father was a Kentucky State Trooper. Their efforts taught me the meaning of sacrifice and gratitude. I've always had an avid curiosity about the world around me, and I hope my enthusiasm for life carries over into my stories, even the dark ones.
This is a first book in the series and the actual writing and grammar etc were generally good. The event itself is interesting, though it is not yet clear what really is happening, so can't judge the science as yet. I had a couple of issues. First, there are Army guys flying a Blackhawk toward the event, so why are there Marines in the back of the helicopter? I'm not from Alaska, but it is really feasible for someone to go for hours on a snowmobile to get to Fairbanks from the northern part of the state? I had issues with some of the main characters as well. Zach is not that easy to like, though he usually does the right thing while remaining laser-focused on getting home. Would I be fine with him in my survival group...absolutely, even if he is not terribly personable. Wendy was also a bit of a problem. She seems to have a decent sense of concern for the approaching weather and I don't blame her for wanting to try to reach her husband. However, as she, her children and a charitable driver named Eddie try desperately to get to Connecticut before a major storm system hits and are in an accident, she actually suggests that Eddie and the other driver exchange insurance cards. A big storm is bearing down on you, people are in chaos and you think this is a good use of time? She also had a good place to shelter in her house and though she still knew a storm was coming, decided to get a good night's sleep and do nothing to prep the shelter. Would I want to try to survive in a group with Wendy? Nope. I will continue the series, mostly out of curiosity about what has caused this.
Edge of Extinction Book 1 by Mike Kraus and Kenny Soward is Scorched...a rather strange title, considering the opening chapters are based on a Russian/US operated Arctic oil platform - that is, until scalding, poisonous steam clouds are released from the seabed, following massive explosions that destroy the rig in a massive fireball, taking many lives aboard it. Prepper Zach Christensen's wife Wendy, a school teacher worries about her husband, working near the disaster zone in Alaska. She and their kids Charlie and David discuss what action they should take to contact Zack. With zero communication and a rising tornado plus volcanic air pollution, their attempt to meet up with Zack falls apart. Can he survive and make it home against the odds? Get this amazing series opener, to find out the shocking reality of Zack's survival nightmare and the horrors he endures along the way!
It was difficult to put the book down When you're so tired from reading something else would jump off a page and you'd turn the page and continue reading. Great writing powerful and addictive story! Planning on continuing my reading a great story! Kindle customer. S.D.Huth Amazon and Goodreads!
It’s a great extinction event, starting in Alaska and causing death dealing weather phenomena. I’ve gone from knowing next to nothing about Alaska, or unusual weather, to learning a great deal about both. Following Zach makes me grateful for milder climes. A great first in series.
Another fantastic book by two outstanding writers. Poisonous deadly steam from the seabed. How will Zach’s family get in touch and how will he get home. Fast paced action and suspense to keep you reading. Can’t wait for the next book.
A thrilling new take on a Post-apocalyptic survival series. This involves the Artic, Alaska and 20 Mega oil Rigs, along with the weather Together causing a chain reaction of firestorms, twisters, blizzards, and ice storms
