Not just for startups

This book has a lot of useful information on the topic of business communication and can be useful to business folk at all levels of enterprise. I liked the takeaway section at the end of each chapter - they gave a neat summary of what was discussed.

The feel is quite academic as can be seen from the plethora of citations. As such, it is perhaps a little dry, but still eminently readable. The result is a book that you can rely on for solid information which should stand the test of time.

When it comes to self help and business management guides, so often I find myself reading 75% of the book then drifting off. It is not that the content bores me, more it becomes a bit repetitive and samey as the author draws toward their summary statements. With this guide though I was glued to every page, even taking interest in the extensive list of reference texts on the back pages!

Startup Communication Skills by Pete Moon is all about the importance of building strong communication skills as a bedrock to successful business. As the title suggests, Moon's intended audience are startup companies and their leaders, however I would strongly argue the guidance in this book is universally applicable to anyone wanting to improve their emotional intelligence or become a leader in business.

The book is comprised of ten chapters outlining communication strategies from handling difficult conversations within your team to public speaking and networking. Each chapter is broken down further into detailed descriptions, examples and a handy mini-reference selection (for those who want to hone their craft further). The short list of further reading recommendations a nice touch as the different formats cater to every type of hectic diary. Where a whole book may be inaccessible, a eight minute TED talk video might be.

Moon's tone of voice is incredibly engaging, peppered with his own experience as an introverted leader as and when it adds value. This is not a entrepreneur who talks down to his peers but at them as equals, and you get a really strong sense that his writing demur carries into his leadership. This is a man who has seen the best and worst in people on his road to establishing a startup and he is keen to support others in their journey. You can trust him.

I would thoroughly recommend Startup Communication Skills to anyone who wants to improve their communication skills. It is essential reading for any aspirational leader, which is probably why I will be lifting it from my bookshelf again and again.

No matter if you've been around the block a dozen times or this is your first Startup, Pete's covered just about everything you'll need to know to grow your leadership role and tackle the difficult conversations.

This book reads like a reference manual that you can either cruise through cover to cover, or keep on your desk and dog-ear the pages as you navigate hiring, firing, employee reviews, vendor relations and everything in between.
