An amazing resource for teachers who want to give greater support to English Language Learners in their classroom. Although I read this for an ESOL certification program, I think it would be great in the hands of any teacher or administrator who is dedicated to making improvements in instructional design and delivery. Something that I liked were the descriptions of three teachers instructing the same type of lesson and the discussion of their pedagogical strengths/weaknesses. I found this feature, which was repeated throughout the book, to be beneficial in terms of recognizing what works and doesn't work in the SIOP classroom.
This book is a great reference and practical guide to using the SIOP Model for new teachers who are working with English learners. It completely introduces the SIOP Model, provides clear explanations, real classroom examples, and tools for planning lessons with both content and language objectives. Although some sections may feel repetitive and a bit dated, it was introduced in my MA Teaching program, and I find it very informative and helpful for new teachers looking to improve academic instruction for multilingual learners.
While I feel some of the strategies mentioned in this book are antiquated, or just non applicable to my classroom in general, I think the core of the SIOP model is very beneficial and applicable across the board. I do wish that explanation were a little more straightforward, but that is just personal preference.
Read this for my Masters TESOL class. I enjoyed this book compared to many that I have had to read. It has many things I already do in my class, but it has made me more aware of things I need to work on for ML.
