Broccoli Bunch and her best buds embark on a quest to make more friends, have fun, and stand up against the forces of darkness.

The crew of the airship Beaver Cleaver are willing to follow Broccoli Bunch wherever she may lead them—a grand gesture of love and loyalty for someone who’s only been their captain for a week. They admire her ability to resolve conflicts and forge friendships under even the most dire and dangerous of circumstances, as well as her courage on the battlefield against those who threaten all that is good in the world.

On their latest adventure, Broccoli and her friends Amaryllis, Awen, and the sylph paladin Bastion must cleanse a dungeon of its Evil Roots. Weeding out the sinsiter plant requires our heroes to wander labyrinthine corridors, fight off vicious monsters, and keep the self-proclaimed hero cervid Emmanuel Aldelain von Chadsbourne, who insisted on joining them, from wreaking havoc with every reckless move he makes.

But magically cleaning up a dungeon is child’s play compared to what awaits Broccoli and her companions as they fight sky pirates over a penal colony island and rally opposing armies to battle a monstrous dragonkin amphiptere. It’s all in a day’s work!

This series is filled with so much coziness, and so much adventure! I loved the way that we saw Broccoli mature in the way she handles conflict in this one, as well as the way that the stakes are being raised for the characters. It did get a little info-dumpy at times, but there was also a ton of action and cuteness to make up for that. I'm so sad that the next volume isn't in ebook format already since I want to just keep reading!

This series is going quickly downhill for me to the point I might drop it, and the reason is obvious if you've read the book on Royal Road. In fact, it's almost insulting to the reader for the author to be advertising their 8+ writing projects with concurrent publications every chapter and expecting anything else. I've nothing against an author doing whatever they want, but the lack of focused interest shows clearly in the quality of the writing and I've no obligation to read it.

The book continues its 'Bunnessy', where each step of the way feels increasingly contrived to create a possible adventure for the bun, to the point that, if by the end of book#3 I was already wishing for its end, I was on my knees and begging by their arrival in Sylphfree in this volume.

The characters feel increasingly flanderized, especially the protagonist. Where at the start of the series she did feel like a quintissential cinnamon bun, being innocent, bubbly and slightly hare-brained, now she feels one-noted, annoying and sometimes just stupid. Amy is overly and unnecessarily hostile at every turn and Awen feels like she slipped into a hyperbolic time chamber when we weren't looking. The character growth she has seemingly experienced in their short timespan together is unnatural, yet not implausible. But she went from an interested occasional tinkerer to the foremost airship engineer and weapon designer in Dirt within a month.

Lastly, I'm disappointed by the increasing amount of 'combat'. It's a divergence from what I expect a series like this to focus on, and frankly, it's not very well-written. The lack of forethought for this aspect is evident in how badly balanced it is. One of the latter scenes in the book with the Amphiptere had me almost clawing my eyes out; forgetting the fact that she keeps saying dumb shit at a meeting between high-level army officers and nobody tells her to shut up, at the fight, she's somehow weaving in and out rescuing people at the epicentre of a battle between 3 armies and a huge beast as if everyone keeps stopping for her sake.

I've read 12 books by this author, and 5 in this series (this includes book 5 of this series). I think all but one of the books I read was in the litrpg category, and the one that might not of been, the science fiction one, might have been, don't recall now.

I've enjoyed the books I've read by this author, including the ones in this series, so why did it take me nearly two years to read this book here? I bought it in Feb 2022, and owned (I think, at least I had access to it), the version of this book that was free to read and existed on a website somewhere (I forget which one) longer than that. So . . . why? The easiest answer is either: I wasn't exactly over-joyed by how this book started way back when I picked it up, and/or it'd been a while and I didn't exactly remember everything from the prior books.

Right, so, when the prior book ended, Cinnamon bun (yeah, that's the main character's name), was flying in an airship with her friends towards a specific nation to try to help stop war from breaking out amongst, um, 7? nations. There was a peace summit they were flying towards.

This book picks up where that one ended - them flying towards that peace summit. And, as happens a lot, they kept darting off course to tackle side quests and the like. Like helping a living crystal travel to an island to live in exile; and diving into "dungeons".

Enjoyable series.

4.5* Wow Broccoli never goes in a straight line does she. It was a chaotic collection of adventures with a few insufferable characters that really get the entitlement knocked out of them. Broccoli just can't seem to just pass on she always seems to want to stop an help. This was a very fast paced addition to the series and on the bonus of that they have only just managed to get to where they were meant to be... only a few days late... kinda.
I completely lost track of time with this book and the only reason I didn't start the next despite my dislike of politics (Broccoli would have made it palatable) was the fact it was 5am and I really needed some sleep.

It's easy to see just how much Broccoli has grown through the admittedly short journey she's been on, as she has demonstrated her ability to step up as a leader even if it means tossing away the perpetual olive branch of friendship she offers everyone. Even more antics ensue in this volume, with Broccoli helping all the more for it. I wouldn't be surprised if she managed to unite the whole world under the banner of friendship at the rate she's going.

fun

A fun romp. The story is more filler than grand adventure like the last three, but then Broccoli is traveling on a time crunch. She has two mini-adventures in this book: 1) delivery of a mysterious crystal creature and 2) resolution of Mole man and Slyph intercity tension. She manages to get it done in Bun fashion and just in time. Please enjoy as the stage is now set for more grand adventures!

“I don’t know. You start calling people baddies, and the next thing you know, whatever they do, you see in a bad light. It’s a great way to listen less” (p. 176).

Although a lot happens, this is an incredibly cozy read. This book is the fastest paced in the series. A little less stats and a few less nonviolent solutions here, but, still charming.

Fun, I guess. It was a lot of random stuff. I had hoped they made it to the big conspiracy plot thing but it wasn’t the case. Kind of losing interest in the overall trek which is sad because I honestly love the characters. Will still check out the next one at some point.

Still basically no levels and no character development for the MC. Basically a filler book.
